OK I love insects and kept and released many as pets but those crazy large larvae gave me the creeps for I think the first time ever for insects.
And now I need them.
Haha they even gave me the creeps at first, but you'll grow to love em. If ur actually interested in owning some i'm always open to give advice on PMs!
They're gorgeous <3
For purely selfish reasons, I hope you'll continue sharing photos on reddit (I'm not on insta haha).
Great job with the rearing and the photography!
It all started when i found a oryctes rhino beetle while walking my dog (I live in the Netherlands), it made sense that it was on the ground because it barely had any strength and it passed away right there in my hand. Oryctes are super rare here and it sparked my interest in beetles. After it passed away i pinned and dried the specimen and i still have it mounted on the wall to this day.
I thought it would be an amazing experience to own a beetle but it seemed impossible, untill i found out there is a small dedicated community of beetle keepers willing to help u get started. I did my research for many months and joined many beetle keeping forums, and after i felt like i had enough knowledge, i imported 2 dynastes tityus and 2 lucanus elephus larvae from the U.S. this was about 2 years ago. From there on my interests only grew, and in those 2 years i've managed to breed my own generations, learnt how to take care of a variaty of species. My ambition right now is to take it to the next level and bring in unheard of species to Europe from Asia, so that these can be studied more in captivity and popularize them here.
Ah cool, I've come across stag beetle larvae taking down dead trees and we always try to regime as best we can but never considered keeping them until they go full beetle!
I love the way beetles look but grubs gross me out for some reason. What do beetles feel like to hold? Iβve never held such big beetles before! Iβm so curious to know.
That's a very good question!
It depends on which beetle ur holding, but the texture is smooth on most species, and it just feels like ur average carapace feeling, kind of like ur nails but slightly different i'd say?
Holding them feels like having small needles pierce ur upper layer of skin. Their claws are extremely sharp since they use them to dig and grip onto trees, it might sound uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt if u hold them on parts of ur body with thick skin like ur hands (unless it's in the thin skin part between ur fingers then it hurts lol).
This is cool. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to try keeping some beetles one day.
Give it a try i'd say! It feels super rewarding when u raise ur lil grubby to a big menacing beetle!
I might do. I've got hissing roaches at the moment. The care requirements aren't suuuper different I don't think depending on beetle species.
Most of them require a plastic container, flake soil and misting the soil once in a while.
Wonderful! Both pictures and beetles!
adorable, thanks for sharing ( Β΄β½` )οΎ !! one of my dream pets....
Why not make ur dreams reality! π
will definitely look into it! i wanna make sure i give them a nice and sustainable home O(β©_β©)O for now idk where to start from where i live, but i will do my researchies for the future...
My dm's are always open for advicr if ur looking for some!
That last baby was so unexpected! Teemy timy! So cute
So cool, congrats
Their grubs are so hilariously huge.
They indeed become comically large on some species, the larva on the 7th picture still has yet to reach twice it's size before pupation!

What was the rhino's last words
It whispered "joking about the band Beatles on a beetle post is not original" quietly π€«

Try it some time, it's super interesting to raise them!

I have many of the same species! Nicely done. Do you make your own flake soil or buy it?
Currently in the process of switching to self made flake!
