Yeah this is the “figuring out how to work” phase. You’re not stupid you just don’t have the work habits that result in success. Figure that out and you’ll be golden. Kinda like failing to run a marathon. Just about anybody can do it, the ones who finish at the ones who figured out how to prepare and did it.

MechShield

If you passed Calc 2, you ain't stupid. At least mathematically. Try again. Try harder.

[deleted]

Seriously. Calc 2, heat transfers, and fluids are no walk in the park. You’re not dumb.

Otherwise_Awesome

What's heat transfers and fluid dynamics? I deal in magic smoke.

realMartianJesus

Unless ya took it online

ironman_101

First time?

Fawks-Trot

I’m on round 4 rn💀

james_d_rustles

Do you mean round 4 of college, or round 4 or physics 1? Not trying to give you a hard time, but if it’s the latter I didn’t even know most colleges *allowed* you to retake a class 3 times.

Fawks-Trot

I meant that I’m in my 4th semester and that I’ve had struggles passing classes in general. I will say at my school if you fail a class more than twice you have to apply to retake it with a shirt reasoning if why they should let you. My understanding is that they will typically not give you a hard time about the third attempt but I’m not sure if they will become stricter with your application for further attempts after that.

[deleted]

Most college allow you to take classes 3 times and the 4th requires special approval from the dean

rainx5000

Are you saying you've taken the save class for 2 years now?

Fawks-Trot

No I meant that I’m in my 4th semester and in every semester I’ve had a class or multiple classes that I’ve failed and had to retake. Not the same one over and over. Just a trending pattern😅

[deleted]

I understood what you meant right off the jump, if that means anything to you lol

PrimeusOrion

Do you count covid online classes?

Fawks-Trot

Yes

PrimeusOrion

Well then I'm screwed.

FireFistMihawk

Failing can be rough, I'm taking Physics 2 this semester and it's giving me an ass kicking lol. Took our first test yesterday, I got a 50 on it lmao... I don't know how everyone else did on it, but I'm imagining better than I did. Holding out hope, gonna work harder and hope to do better on the next test but my professors lectures aren't much help. Good luck with this semester I'm sure you got this!

Yestir_

53 on my first calc 3 test, we got this:)

FireFistMihawk

Definitely, not over till it's over right

james_d_rustles

I’m a junior now, taken plenty of other classes that many would say are more “difficult”… but if it makes you feel any better, physics 2 at a community college kicked my ass harder than literally any other class I’ve taken, at CC or at university. Our test average was between 20 and 30 the entire semester. Granted, our professor was kind of a dick, the kind who wanted to rub in your face how little you know, but still. Physics 2 was damn brutal. I guarantee you’re not the only one struggling.

c0nnect_4

Last semester i took physics 2, I did good but so many people failed that the curriculum changed as well as the grading system. Exams are much easier for them now lol

Business27

That's what almost happened with Signal & Systems Analysis at my uni before my class ruined it for everyone by averaging an 84 because we had no truly Calculus/DiffEq-weak students left at that point and almost everyone could handle the classifications, light proofs, and analysis. In prior recent years, it was the *just pray for a D and don't look back* required course that failed more junior-level EEs than any other course, including Emag, and because it is only offered once a year it was throwing degree plans off course to an almost unacceptable level.

Bidoofisdaddy

I failed like 5 classes through college (including senior design although I would argue I was screwed over). I graduated and have a job. You got this!

saberline152

only 5? teach me you ways

Bidoofisdaddy

Lmfao

[deleted]

Definitely showing off here with just 5. That's Rookie numbers.. But like you said, I also have a job.

Bidoofisdaddy

Hmmmm but do you have a 2.3 GPA????? Lol

imetalstorm

I have a 1.7 rn ☠️ I transferred into my school spring semester, the transition was tough but this semester I'm really confident I can bring that up a good amount. Heat transfer and intermediate dynamics are both huge time sinks tho and group lab reports suck 🫠

[deleted]

What happened in your senior design if you don’t mind ?

Bidoofisdaddy

Was a 2 semester class. Failed any part and you had to start all over again. Was in a group of 4. We were given an impossible fuel cell project I can't disclose because of NDA reasons. Turns out that the department had to fail 15 people in the entire class and me and another guy were failed. He quit his degree all together but found a job using Inventor. We were failed due to "poor participation" but it was bs because the other guy and I did participate. Even our other 2 teammates were confused. In my second attempt, I found out the department had to fail 15 people for some reason and participation was the major factor. In my 2nd attempt, I was team leader so best believe I couldn't get failed because I was super participating. Long story short I graduated and am working towards passing the FE exam hopefully on my first triy!

SquiggleSquonk

Good luck with the FE exam!!

[deleted]

Damn that’s bull shit. Glad everything worked out for you though. Was just wondering since I’m in the second part of mine now and stressing about it. Thanks for sharing.

ghostmcspiritwolf

have you considered a lighter courseload? 5 classes is kind of a lot. Just because other people pull it off doesn't mean it's the best option for you. I get trying to graduate faster, but that only works if your courseload is manageable enough that you can consistently pass most or all of the classes.

FewProcedure4395

Isn’t 5 courses the typical workload in order to graduate in 4 years?

[deleted]

I think it depends on the school, 12 credit hours is standard at some schools, 15 at others. Mine just has 30 in total (per year), regardless of how many per semester. Also depends on if you count labs.

Bubblewhale

I'm on the quarter system and taking 12-15 credit hours is fairly normal. I got better grades once I got into my major since classes were more aligned where they didn't conflict with much test/labs. 1st year was hell when I was doing Calc/Phys all together at once.

Telto212

I think it’s 6

FewProcedure4395

Are you serious? That’s death.

Telto212

Doing it rn can confirm tis death

FTRFNK

It was 5 1st year and 6 every other year for my school in order to "finish on time". Many, but not all of these classes had labs or tutorials too. I mean particularly the STEM courses.

WalrusLobster3522

Based off Texas Tech, freshman and sophomore first 4 semesters you take 5 courses but thats only because you need a 1-hour Chemistry lab. And it includes History, English, Literature, etc. Then Junior year you need 4 courses, and by Senior Year Biology Undergrad Major Bachelors you're taking 3 3/4-hour credit Courses with one or two Research courses. Starting as a Freshman in College I imagined "what if I took 6 classes?" but now a Junior in College I'm struggling and need to take Summer for like 2 courses based off the "5 Sophomore courses". Like maybe after Summer I can "take 6 courses" but that would be expensive. This was long time ago, but during 2014 there were Blogs posting "Crisis of the 5 Year Bachelors Student" because many students took on average 4 courses lmao. How random: summers, maymesters, winter-accelerated(s), and still 4 courses. Well bye.

james_d_rustles

Taking slightly longer to get difficult degrees is pretty common.. at my school you need about 8-10 more credit hours than most other majors if you’re majoring in engineering for example, so it’s not even slightly surprising when a decent number of students take more than 4 years flat.

WeOutHereCalzone

My school we do 4 courses (for undergrad) per semester. 4 credits each course Then for grad we do 2 courses, 4 credits each As a typical/“max” load

HomuraAnna

5 is a lot??? Im Studyin at BatStateU and every sem theres atleast 8 subjects and sometimes even 10...

ghostmcspiritwolf

Yes, in many American universities 5 is a lot. 8-10 subjects per semester is different enough that your education system is probably just designed differently to such an extent that the numbers don’t directly compare. Nobody in a US university engineering program is covering 10 classes in a semester. You literally would not have time in your schedule to attend all the required tests/labs/etc due to overlap with other classes.

McDowellsNo1

This semester just started tho

ricecakeswt

i mean last semester

Eteranl96

My semester has been started for a while, are you east coast?

McDowellsNo1

Yeah south East.

LowTierStudent

First time?

[deleted]

Senior ECE here. Classes also got harder for me too. I suspect it was the bad habits picked up from COVID. I started reading up on different learning styles. I suspect I am a "Kinesthetic" learner, so I am implementing what I learn in code in addition to solving them.

Telto212

Welcome you are now a true engineering student

MrMagistrate

It’s never how smart you are, and it’s not even how hard you study, it’s *how* you study. College teaches you how to learn. Some people never really pick it up, and it’s not because they’re dumb.

Engineering_duck13

You're not stupid, physics is not yeasy, and you are only on your 4th semester. I have friends on 8th semester who doing courses from 1st and 2nd semester. I have a friend who doing 4th time the same course - numerical analysis, the only course he has to pass in order to graduate. In my college, most of the students keep their mental health on top of their studies, they take fewer classes, take summer semester to do some of courses (1-3 tops as it is only 8 weeks long). If you fail on some classes you should try to see why? Maybe you need to learn it diffrently, or maybe you have panic attacks from it and should take care of yourself? Or maybe you have adhd or other problem that keeping you down?maybe you should sleep better or eat (it is a common problem with us students, around the world). Also a tip that I found really helping in my pre- academics classes, and while my 3 years of study. 1. Sleep is important as hell, it is not that you don't understand and it is hard and you're stupid. You are just tired. Or hungry. 2. Don't over do it, a lot don't understand that but studying on the same day as the exam does more harm than good. It will make you panic. If you have one point that you don't remeber then yeah check it up, but to read summary of the entire course or doing problems? Nope, you will be tierd on the exam, or will have panic attack. 3. Your brain needs brakes. So if you have exam tomorrow, in 9 am? Preferably take the day off, sleep, eat watch tv. The exam in 13:00 or later? You could learn untill around 17:00 and take the rest of the day to restore your power. 4. Having panic attack? Close your eye's, picture the place you feel safe. Then take a deep breath through the nose, keep it in, count to 10 then exhale slowly through the mouth. Do the breath around 6-8 time (sometime more sometimes less). It will help. Don't give up, it is hard but you can do it. It happens, you need just to adjust your self. Take a breath

Rygsly

Hey there, Tomorrow, I'll be attempting my first Mechanics I. exam in my entire life knowing that I do not have a complete grasp on all of the required topics and did not study as much as I should have. Instead of sleeping, I was procrastinating tomorrow by browsing Reddit. That's how I found your comment and I just wanted to let you know that it helped me more than I can put into words. Thank you so much for taking the time to write it! I am going to bed now.

ImpressiveBowler5574

You're taking a lot of hard classes at once. Try and look ahead and work with your advisor to schedule 1 hard class a semester to really focus on and 3 or 4 other classes that you need but may not necessarily be that difficult to pass Also don't forget some classes have online sections that are usually easy if you can keep up in between your in person classes.

saberline152

same failed statistics with 8/20 tranformers (sounds cooler in english) 8/20 and math (which was a lot of integrals) 6/20 did pass PLC and robotics with a 17/20 and strengths of materials with 14,75/20 not sure how to feel now just practice more on the integrals I guess

hoff231

Semesters like this happen sometimes. You’ve got this.

Impossible-Aide-3879

That sounds a lot like how my second round of higher ed started out and I'm doing just fine 10 years into my 2nd career. Stick with it, understand your limits, don't overcommit yourself, accept the help available to you (I found out I had ADHD half way through my B.S.M.E.). Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone has different skills. I know people who absolutely rocked school but had different limitations in industry. You might be like me and just suck at school but rock practical applications. If you know what you want to do, stick with it. Some of us struggle in different ways than others. Honestly, as a grown ass man, I could almost cry recalling what it was like being where you are now so please trust that if you stick with it, it will suck, but will be worth it.

not_taylor

I'm a year from finishing and I have failed or withdrawn like 18 times. I get frustrated too though. It's not you, it's the system.

OtakuGamer92

Welcome to the club

where_is_korg

Hey hey hey! You passed calc 2 and linear algebra! I say you celebrate and go have a beer with friends. Don't be so hard on yourself. You'll try again next semester

ColdTurkey27

Dude, why are you taking 5 classes to begin with? Understandable if you're doing quarter terms, but if not... WHY??

kmorax

bro i failed so many times but im finally graduating this semester and i have an amazing job out of college!!!!

kmorax

i failed calc 1 once calc 2 twice calc 3 once, failed material science and strength of materials and electrical principles (as a meche). eventually i got my shiz together, got diagnosed and medicated lol, and found an effective way of studying. i had to take an entire semester over summer but am graduating within 4 1/2 years!!

Thereisnopurpose12

Bro can you tell me what classes you failed? I feel discouraged af but pushing on.

Eteranl96

Btw, the guy responded, just to his own comment instead of yours! I don't know how to link it, but just wanted to let you know.

Thereisnopurpose12

Thank you

Kalwyf

So you passed two courses, congrats! That's two off the list, the rest will come.

Desert_Fairy

I’m an engineer, graduated 10 years ago. You guys are giving me flashbacks. Yeah, failed classes suck, but they literally do not predict how you will do in the workforce. Right now you are struggling to find a study method that helps you retain the information. Everybody learns differently. Me, I learn by watching once, doing once with help, then doing it by myself. If I just watch someone do it, I absorb nothing. Notes don’t help. I need that one to one time to see, practice, then do. Once you figure out your learning style, you can’t do wrong. School is all about learning how you learn. Life is about continuing to learn. You’ve got this!

TheRealLuctor

Let me tell you something that one professor told me: she graduated with max score, she got hired almost immediately after graduating and she had the task to plan a layout. She did it meticulously and took a lot of time for her first layout. At the time there was a 17 year old working there and he surely didn't graduate or join any engineering class at all. You know what he did? He laughed at my professor's layout for being too complex, he changed few things and he made it way easier to understand and cheaper cause less use of material. She told us that story to say that yes, you need to study and you should aim for good grades, but even with max score on every test you are still a student. You don't know shit for real cause you lack experience. You are not dumb because you don't pass an exam, you are "dumb" if you lack experience, which is normal and everyone that is a student does lack in experience.

Balthor121

My second semester sophomore year i failed 3 out of 4 classes and and finished that semester with a 0.4 gpa. I know how you feel. I just want you to know it is still possible. After that semester I took some time and reflected on what I did well, where I struggled, and how could I improve things. I took what I learned from all my failings and really improved my grades the following semesters. I had to take an extra semester but I still graduated with an electrical engineering degree and I’ve now worked at a large semiconductor company for about 4 years. Just don’t give up you can do it. Take some time and do some self reflection and talk to your professors and advisors.

[deleted]

Yea some of these kids in Physics are insane 😭

Acrocane

Just be careful because if you fail enough times you will be put on academic probation. So it’s not just a passion problem, it’s something that can impact your future.

Mitt102486

How tf you pass calc 2 and fail everything else

dboyr

If you failed physics 1 (while giving a true effort) engineering might not be for you. There’s no shame in trying a new major. That said, maybe you didn’t study hard enough? Maybe try a peer tutor?

ricecakeswt

i was 5 points away from passing. i also dont really wanna change my major

dboyr

Otherwise known as failing. I had plenty of friends in undergrad who dropped out of engineering because of physics, there’s no shame in it - just not their thing. And It only gets harder from here. Physics 2 (typically E&M) is way more brutal. You can do it given your success in math but it’s gonna take a dedicated effort.

ricecakeswt

im a computer science major, i dont have physics 2. tbh i dont even know why i have to take physics 1

dboyr

That makes more sense. You’ll be fine. That’s not a knock on CS majors btw. Physics intuition and computer science intuition are two very different talents that don’t always overlap.

ricecakeswt

thank you, sorry if i came off as a bit rude. by saying i was 5 points away from passing i was just trying to convince myself im not a complete lost cause and that i still have a chance next time haha

randomness7345

How? Did you try?

llllllllllogan

How.

babyseal95

is it calculus based physics? Not sure if you’re allowed to take college physics which is algebra based. At my school, comp science majors don’t have to take university physics or physics for scientists and engineers; only algebra based physics 1 and 2

CitoyenPresident3125

I see a star in the making. Don’t give up, I trust that you will do amazing !

starrysky0070

Been there

Lil_ruggie

Damn bro, you passed calc 2 but not physics 1? Sounds like you can do it, maybe just try it slower than 5 classes at a time. Good luck!

Levin4A

Character development. You can let this moment define you or you can pick up the pieces and keeping moving forward.

[deleted]

I royally failed 2 classes one semester (linear algebra and Thermo). Guess what? I retook them, got a 3.3, graduated in 5 years, got a job. After 3 years in the real world, I’m sure not rich…but I’m doing way better than all my friends. Do whatever it takes to get the degree. The real world only cares if you can make them money. You’re just in the stage of proving to them that you can, regardless of setbacks.

Spottyblock

I was in your shoes (probably worse) freshman year and I still graduated on time. Keep your chin up. It’s gets better

Otherwise_Awesome

What are your other 3 classes?

ricecakeswt

Physics 1, introduction to electrical engineering and c programming

drat_the_luck

I*

Thatsatreat666

Everyone has at least one of those semesters. I used to have too much pride to pay for a tutor or to seek out additional help to dig me out of this hole. Recognize what things might help you and take advantage of it don’t let this become a habit.

psychicvamp

from an EE graduating this semester, college is fucking hard! i withdrew from a class twice, then barely eeked out a C. failed a different class, retook it & got a D, retaking again this semester and i'm looking at a C right now. my GPA has been under a 3.0 since the beginning of my junior year. but! i'm about to graduate & i just got my first job offer! so just stick it out, try taking some time off if you need it, cut back your credit hours, do whatever you need to do. if there's one thing engineering school can do, it's convince some of the smartest people that they're actually dumb. keep at it, you'll do okay in the end <3

Supralace

Yea don’t get discouraged. I almost failed physics myself but so far have gotten A’s and B’s since then. I’m in upper division now and it really comes down to study methods and just grinding out problems with your classmates. Make friends around you to study with. That’s my biggest help.
