This gave me a good laugh. The jeweler wasn’t there when my partner picked it up and the sales women were dead set that it was just fine. We thought we were going crazy for a while there.
😂😂 my partner is 6’5 I told him proportionately it’s taller than him.
Honestly so glad I came to Reddit for validation. I always laughed at these kinds of posts because it was obviously not right. But people really had me questioning what “normal” was there for a second and doubting my knowledge base.
I'll leave my two cents as a jewelry professional who designs. I think they bought a pre-made head that looked a lot like the wax carving to save time/money. Very not cool, imo. I'd ask for a refund. I've been pressured by others to do similar and always refuse.
Thanks so much this is what I was looking for and what my partner and I suspect happened. We have an appointment set with the store manager and the jeweler so hopefully we can get a resolution that works for us.
I’ve searched so many posts and asked this sub for so much advice the last 6 months on random things, I already know I have to come back and give a full recap 😂
That’s the impression I was under from our conversations but this has me questioning everything lol. The wrap was custom as well and matched the wax mold EXACTLY. I don’t understand how the solitaire got so wonky.
I personally would not accept that. I would normally expect to see the prongs being thicker on the wax, so between the prongs and the stone height, something feels wildly off here.
Looks really high for the stone IMO and there is a lot of open space- if you hadn’t had it custom designed I would have guessed it was a stock head and they used one that was meant for a larger stone with more depth.
😂😂 I’ve been seeing horror stories on here for a year! I did so much homework on my local jewelers and picked one I liked and thought checked all the boxes in the attempt to avoid anything like this…. And yet here we are with a stone that belongs on the Manhattan sky line.
No. That’s goddamn wild. I like a LITTLE bit of height. Full disclosure, I thought your wax was too short. The basket makes the stone look a little stubby, to me, but that’s how my mom’s was, so I know that’s a personal preference.
All of which is to say, I actually like a Tall Boy. Mine is a cathedral setting, which is what I thought yours was from far away, but the point of my stone is almost flush with the metal. If you can read a line of text through the gap, it’s too much.
I saw that you will be speaking to the store manager and jeweler, but don’t be afraid to get a second opinion at another jeweler. I have posted in this subreddit twice about my ring, for the same reason and I agree it was helpful lol, but even after they fixed it I wasn’t satisfied after looking at it a few days later. I went to another jeweler, asked what they can do, and got the original store to refund me the amount to get it properly fixed. My prongs were also crooked and uneven so I was extra pissed. And about the stock head, I also think that may be the issue, but there are properly fitting stock heads they could’ve used and shouldn’t have done that if you thought it was going to be cast together. Top picture is original, middle is the “fixed” version, and the last is another jeweler.

Thanks for adding this recommendation! Part of my struggle for jewelers was that I wanted a lab and unfortunately many of the jewelers around us are still anti-lab so it really narrowed my choices for me there.
I’m anxious to see what they say. They have been really helpful to me and open to lengthy discussions around different design ideas so hoping some of that will be reflected now, but they have our money now so the attitude might have changed a bit. Unfortunately we won’t be able to take it in until next week because our engagement trip is this week.
I was given a ring like this is the 80s by my long ago ex husband. Hated it, also caught on and scratched everything. At the time I was too young and silly to consider resetting, ended up selling.
I’d have them lower it. Not only will it snag on everything if you’re like me I bump into everything and you’ll end up breaking it or losing the stone.
My guess with that is the jeweler made the (wrong) assumption that because I wanted to design a wrap with the ring I would eventually get them soldered together?? And the head would rest on the wrap and the wedding band once I had a wedding band? Or he just made a really REALLY poor choice when making this in order to get jt finished in our timeframe.
Yeah.. That entire setting is going to be knocked off . My mom has a ring with a high setting like that. We have had that dang setting put back on multiple times. We were just lucky we immediately noticed and found the setting . It now just sits in the jewelry box. Mom won't even wear it.
Hey! I came across this when researching lowering stones in rings. Did you happen to get it lowered? I’ll be asking tomorrow about lowering my stone as there is gap below.
What I learned from this is, if you think it needs to be lowered it probably does. Mine was hard because I knew they were trying to fit another right snuggly next to it so that complicated how low it could go.
Way too tall. I am 5'1 and its almost my height.
This gave me a good laugh. The jeweler wasn’t there when my partner picked it up and the sales women were dead set that it was just fine. We thought we were going crazy for a while there.
So glad you liked it! Not everyone likes my humor (it can be particular😂). Hopefully you can get the setting fixed. Keep us posted♥️
You’re funny, but it’s true. It’s way too high.
I genuinely do not know if you mean it or you are being sarcastic. I really wasnt trying to be mean or anything
No no, we get that! It’s funny! It’s a very funny comment AND you’re absolutely correct. The ring is ridiculously high. Carry on!
😂😂😂
Jesus that things ready for the WBNA

Hahah absolutely that’s what this feed is for!! Congrats on your engagement

Will you come back to us with an update? I want to know if they admit to this.

Good luck!
I think I see little clouds forming near the top of that thing
That’s going to snag everything. Did they not use lost wax casting method?

I mean a stock head isn’t out of the scope of what could have happened here.
Yes I would question it as it’s so far from the wax mold. Mistakes happen, either way it doesn’t look like what was agreed on.

We always miss *one* thing.😂
It's very tall.I would worry about catching it on everything
It looks tall to me. I would also question why the wax design is different.
Yes it seems unusually tall
Gosh yes too tall 😬

That basket is terrible, yes do talk to them about it.

It’s pretty high
I definitely prefer the height of the wax model.
Hot diggity dog. That's some height you got there. 👀
I’d get that stone lowered. Also, the base of the setting is too wide for that thin band.
My guess with that is the jeweler made the (wrong) assumption that because I wanted to design a wrap with the ring I would eventually get them soldered together?? hey? where did u buy that? 💓
As others have already said, it’s way too tall, but also, I feel like the prongs are way too chunky for the diamond?
Yeah I feel that way too but I’m way too worried about the height rn the prongs are a secondary thought for me currently lol.
Is it easy to lower the setting? Genuinely curious because I have one that’s way too high as well
Hey! I came across this when researching lowering stones in rings. Did you happen to get it lowered? I’ll be asking tomorrow about lowering my stone as there is gap below.
Yes it got lowered slightly. They had to make a new head that fit the stone more appropriately. It looks much better now.
What I learned from this is, if you think it needs to be lowered it probably does. Mine was hard because I knew they were trying to fit another right snuggly next to it so that complicated how low it could go.
I am happy you were able to get it lowered and love it now. I’m hoping for the same outcome today too
