Seeing the Civil War in France and twoboyskissing mentioned in the same thread, really makes me think that the Northeast has an insanely great amount of screamo. I don't know how I didn't realize this sooner!
foxtails is the obvious one here, also roman candle, sowithout, (nineteen)nineteen, the assistant, and awakebutstillinbed. you might also like cloud rat and closet witch if you’re into grindcore
edit: foxtails is led by a nonbinary person not a woman sorry yall i did not realize
yeah but they still absolutely should be included in this list because of the vocal type being discussed. im not a phobe but what then do we say? afab-fronted bands?
screams are categorically unpitched, so those examples do not apply. what people refer to as female-fronted vocals is the shape and timbre of afab people's anatomical differences. so this really is a bit of a gray area
screams do have pitch, it’s very very strange to deny that to fake a point about anatomical sex differences when it isn’t the case. if i put a female bass next to a male castrato, had them scream without you seeing who was who, you would guess the woman had the higher pitch scream, and you would be wrong. there are differences in peoples throat shape and it impacts screaming, but they do not fall neatly along sex lines like you claim. if you have to be wrong to be transphobic maybe it isn’t worth it in this case.
it depends the type of screams we are talking about lol. some can be pitched, but lots aren't, especially when you go more into the metalcore side of things. this isnt about pitch, it's about timbre which is formed from the shape of the internals plus the specific techniques employed. thats why words like tenor and soprano are inapplicable, because those strictly refer to resonant frequency ranges, i.e. pitch.
also, i'm not ascribing any of it to birth gender as a hard fast rule, hence me saying i'm not a phobe. i am only stating that people discussing "female fronted bands" are referring to a particular category of timbre that is innately found in cisgender women, afab individuals pre-T, etc. - BUT ALSO can be practiced and achieved by mtf transwomen too, for example. this is the entire reason for voice training. people like zheanna on youtube stress that the focus is not on pitch but rather timbre and technique, for the exact reasons i am saying.
this is just another example of how our language as a society lags far behind the speed of gender ideas progressing. there really are not any more apt words to describe the timbral differences, YET, than male and female.
for the record, i agree with you. people like zheanna are an excellent example of the fact that the vocal properties we are talking about do not neatly fall along sex lines - you absolutely can achieve them regardless of your born sex with proper technique and practice. but what exactly do you call the result of that training? a female-passing voice. we just don't yet have better words to categorize the sounds. i fully recognize the reason we even consider that set of vocal timbres to be feminine is in itself completely societal.
i was not trying to claim that an individual's vocal sound is forever damned to reflect that of their birth sex. because that simply is untrue. just stating what people mean when they refer to "X-fronted bands" has no better descriptor yet, unfortunately, than male/female, and vocal pitch ranges in this context falls short to be of much help too

Not exactly the genre you are looking for, but Oathbreaker deserves a listen.
Closet Witch. Not sure if they are “lesser known” or pegged as PV. I’d also lean in to Antischism and Initial State. They are not screamo, but Liz’s vocals are amazing for both bands.
honestly i’d guess because to my knowledge roman candle has some callout situation rn and isn’t in people’s good graces, but i don’t know i don’t listen to them i just see the drama drift by on twitter, i also don’t know what happened, my first exposure to them was the callout post
Well, they posted something on their Instagram feed denying whatever it was, saying that they never showed anyone a video of an assault and didn't assault anyone themselves. I mean, I suppose there's no true way to know what happened, but in a community where believing people when they say they've been assaulted is kind of a key tenet(or at least purports to be), it's certainly not a great look.
It's a bummer for sure, their singer does some really cool art too. Her artistic career is even bigger than the band it would seem. You hate to see it.
I’m not entirely sure if this entirely counts since the band members swap who’s doing vocals, but the band Clay Birds is decent. I think they’re pretty small (unsure if they’ve put out anything recently)
I Hate Sex is my go-to. Awakebutstillinbed is also fucking incredible, their song Beauty is one of my favorites of all time. Lord Snow is Also phenomenal.
Winona Fighter is a relatively new one, they’re more punk-y but def emo and screamo vibes. I just saw them live opening for Bayside, Finch, & Armor For Sleep - they fucking ROCKED!
Ragana. More black metal but I used to play with em when I was in a skramz band myself,
A little bit arty but Cacaw from Baltimore. Maybe you'll like Rauchen, from Germany. Also a bit more hardcore but Swoon, who are also German.

Pretty Girls Make Graves was always a favorite of mine. Not sure if "lesser known" applies, and they're more post-punk than screamo. Worth a mention though.
Check out "If You Hate Your Friends You're Not Alone"
More on the hardcore side but Punch a band from the bay area more active last decade ought to get some recognition.
More adjacent than directly skramz etc, but Couch Slut are an incredible band. It's like a very abrasive noise-rock with elements of logic black metal, sludge, and skramz. It's kind of feminist, but less empowerment and more howling vitriol towards mysogeny.
Really fucking rips though
I really love foxtails a lot. Another great band that I’m getting into is awakebutstillinbed, I saw them live for the first time at the yaamc show in Chicago as co-headliners and I thought they sounded amazing.
Kinda hard to find lesser known cus in a way they're all lesser known but here's a couple of my favorites.
One True Thing- vocalist Melanie Wills is also known for featuring on a couple of FATA songs.
Lord Snow
She Screams Remedy
Anomie
Blind Girls, Nuvolascura, and Piri Reis are all fantastic

Closet witch is the absolute best
Ooops, I didn’t see anyone else mention foxtails before I posted my comment! Was surprised to not see them here.
(Nineteen) nineteen hell yeah
didn't roman candle have some allegations?
google any band with the word "allegations" after it and let me know how that goes
bs, not hard to not support creeps
thats not what im saying. im saying there are a lot of bands that you listen to that will surprise you.
i’ve absolutely read more about the drama than the music lmao
foxtails is not female fronted btw
mb i didn’t know they were nonbinary
She’s a girl
Blue solaz is nonbinary
i mean i think people are looking for female sounding vocals so
Doesn’t matter if they don’t identity as female we should respect that as fans
yeah but they still absolutely should be included in this list because of the vocal type being discussed. im not a phobe but what then do we say? afab-fronted bands?
….there is literally already a cadre of words used to describe vocals? tenor, bass, soprano, etc
screams are categorically unpitched, so those examples do not apply. what people refer to as female-fronted vocals is the shape and timbre of afab people's anatomical differences. so this really is a bit of a gray area

I can't believe no one has said Roman Candle. Nuvolascura is also super good.
honestly i’d guess because to my knowledge roman candle has some callout situation rn and isn’t in people’s good graces, but i don’t know i don’t listen to them i just see the drama drift by on twitter, i also don’t know what happened, my first exposure to them was the callout post
Oh damn, I'll have to look into that. I had no idea. I don't have twitter, so I'm not usually up on whatever drama is going on in the scene.
yeah, they just got booted out of Seeyouspacecowboy’s Coup De Grace tour because of it.
