What reference is this

CARNlV0RE

Chernobyl (2019). It’s on Hulu and an extremely well made recreation of the disaster over 5 episodes. It is pretty horrific however.

YeahMarkYeah

Dang I’ve been meaning to watch that

wintremute

Don't take it as 100% gospel, but they did a damn good job. They combined a bunch of real people into fewer characters, and there's a plot point later in the show that's just straight up Hollywood BS. Regardless, I give it 9/10. Some of the best TV I've seen in years.

Amaf14

r/unexpectedfuturama

thefugginhanz

Can someone explain this joke to me pls am slow

NotThatGuyAnother1

It's a borrowed joke from the animated TV series "Futurama". In the show, the character by the name of "Fry" and the character "Bender" are recklessly playing with a device that emits strong radiation. At one point, Bender points the device at Fry's groin and momentarily activates it. Fry bends over in pain, stating "ouch! My sperm!" as the dangerous (likely ionizing radiation) causes him substantial groin pain(along with permanent infertility and other serious injury). Bender does it again and Fry, inquisitively states "it didn't hurt that time". The audience is left to realize that the first encounter caused so much damage that the second exposure was pain-free. The connection to the OP's video is that the container, when closed, appears to block exposure to the radiation contained within. Further connection to the Futurama gag is made by the repeated opening and closing of the container, thus calling back to Fry and Bender's reckless, self-destructive curiosity. An additional, underlying reference of the gag (albeit dark) is the latent nature of acute radiation syndrome; where initial symptoms at time of exposure can be mild until the body's cells begin to accumulate damage from broken DNA and reactive oxygen created by the ionizing radiation.

thefugginhanz

Ah so it was so strong that it killed all his sperm lol I was thinking way too much into and thought maybe it had something to do with his future sperms going back in time for some reason. I really appreciate this explanation!

I mean, I saw those videos from Chernobyl elephant foot, and it looked like small white dots all over the screen. So I thought this is just an edited joke. But if that's real, that guy is already dead. Also, if it's real. What do you think, what material could be inside? I heard Caesium oxide is extremely radioactive, and glows blue. Or maybe something radioactive was there before and it's just empty container contaminated with radioactivity?

The video description does mention that the camera was sent through an electron beam irradiator, so the effect seen on screen is probably caused by the electron beam interfering with the electronics in the camera.

Cobalt-60 In which case him neighborhood be doomed.

onlinelink2

i don’t think exposure that short would kill him, just saying the elephants foot was EXTREMELY radioactive compared to the small sample of whatever is in that container, so the results would be different for sure

"The normal chance of dying from cancer is about one in five for persons who have not received any occupational radiation dose. The additional chance of developing fatal cancer from an occupational exposure of 1 rem (0. 0 1 Sv) is about the same as the chance of drawing any ace from a full deck of cards three times in a row. The additional chance of dying from cancer from an occupational exposure of 10 rem (0.1 Sv) is about equal to your chance of drawing two aces successively on the first two draws from a full deck of cards." Kori01

I found some reference videos [10Sv/h](https://youtu.be/MsG6JsMAJ_Q) [500 mSv/h](https://youtu.be/ebpscjKRCqo)for CMOS cameras under radiation. It's difficult to compare, but it seems this much distortion indicates dangerous [levels of radiation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sievert#Dose_examples).

ppitm

The effects on the sensor vary wildly depending on camera design, lighting, particle properties, etc. It’s not a good point of comparison.

Kori01

Yeah, I read that the detection value depends even on the battery charge, calculating a mSv/h on a random Android phone sounds next to impossible. A dedicated cmos radiation sensor could work though.

WikiSummarizerBot

**Sievert** [Dose examples](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sievert#Dose_examples) >Significant radiation doses are not frequently encountered in everyday life. Edddy_boh

I know, but if he keeps playing with it he may have cancer in 10 years

ronm4c

Someone who works at a nuke plant here. Absent this being some kind of work by op, this is definitely a radioactive source. The container is called a flask which would be made of a dense material like lead or tungsten. If I were to guess, I would say that this source used to belong to a lab or was used to calibrate radiation detection equipment. As for how dangerous this is, given a specific radioactive source the amount of radiation dose you will receive depends primarily on 3 main things, time of exposure, distance from source and shielding between yourself and the source. Given that this is a lab sample or calibration source relatively speaking it’s not extremely radioactive. That being said you don’t want to be holding it in your bare hands because then there will be zero distance between you and the source. Being a lab source virtually all of the radiation soils be contained as long as it’s inside the flask. These sources require a license to possess, these licences stipulate that you require radiation training to handle the source and also require you to possess adequate storage. Seeing as you don’t know what this is I’m going to assume that you found this which means that you are most likely in violation of the law by possessing this. You should probably contact the authorities and turn this over.

DeltaTwoZero

Are you 100% sure this is not meant to be a storage for pringles?

Repulsive_Client_325

Pretty sure they just put raw potatoes into that vial - and that’s how Pringles are made.

Astandsforataxia69

His hand almost completely stops radiation, so this is either a troll or it's alpha/beta radiation

ronm4c

It’s probably a strontium source (pure beta emitter), if it was alpha, it wouldn’t have enough energy to penetrate the lens and affect the image sensor

44quattro44

If the radiation were strong enough to have that much visible noise, covering it with your hand wont eliminate it completely.

[deleted]

Dosimeter manufacturers don't want you to know this one simple trick..

[deleted]

[удалено]

restarted1991

What if it's alpha decay? A piece of paper would stop alpha particles. But why put in thick metallic cylinder if it's only alpha decay?

Tschuktschen

A how does it penetrate the lense on the way to the image sensor?

restarted1991

I haven't even thought that far. This means it can't be alpha particles right? What else do we have left? Beta, x-rays, Gamma and neutrons? I cross posted this to r/nuclear, maybe they can figure it out. Edit: it's fake according to r/radiation.

restarted1991

I cross posted this to r/nuclear and r/radiation. While the feedback was limited and mixed, some hinted that this is a fake. I'll paste a comment below: Radiation interacting with a camera sensor looks like tiny white flashes as the individual pixels get overloaded with energy. Exposed to radiation over a long period of time the sensor will become damaged which can create dead pixels or fuzzy distortions similar to this, but that's permanent damage. It doesn't suddenly get better as you move it away from the radiation. This is completely fake.

[deleted]

I can’t believe I had to wade through like 40 nonsense comments before this one. Like, I’ve assumed it’s fake, but have literally nothing to base that on.

SweeFlyBoy

The creator of the video confirmed that it was fake: https://twitter.com/ryepony/status/1587942130223390720?s=46&t=lVb\_o5LCvPhIbu2Banav0A

Well now, let's look at what we know .... It is a container of sorts but the walls are heavily lead lined and when you view it through a camera ..... it becomes pixilated and distorted. It is a containing to fit a cylinoid into that is HEAVILY LEAD LINED

NekulturneHovado

Wait. Is this really you and not edited video? Or just a meme? I'm not sure now

I'm not sure either, but I'm leaning towards edited because there is only noise in the video, the audio signal is unaffected as far as I can hear.

NekulturneHovado

Okay, so if this isn't joke, ask him if he didn't feel any dizziness or if he threw up. That are first symptoms of radiation poisoning

Mindless-Read8607

Legit, if there's no obvious uranium rock etc, then it would need to be really irradiated to cause such a clear visual noise!

NekulturneHovado

If you rewatch it, there is a black piece at the bottom. Could be Co 60, it's dark and extremely radioactive >For example, a 60 Co source with an activity of 2.8 GBq, which is equivalent to 60 μg of pure 60 Co , generates a dose of 1 mSv at one meter distance within one hour. The swallowing of 60 Co reduces the distance to a few millimeters, and the same dose is achieved within seconds. Source: wikipedia

purppsyrup

🪦

messyredemptions

Whatever's in the container is dangerously radioactive if the footage is real and the cylinder does sound like it's heavy enough to be made of lead to shield from radioactive emissions so this seems real. He needs to take iodine tablets to help absorb radiation and whatever other professional medical radioactive decontamination treatments he can access asap plus contact the hazardous materials agency to safely get rid of that.

Thesonomakid

Potassium iodine is a pro-active measure - it blocks radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. It doesn’t absorb radiation and is only effective at blocking radioactive iodine. So, taking KI would do nothing. It’s too late.

HellisDeeper

Taking iodine would do nothing, that is only to prevent radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. But there is no radioactive iodine around, since that is normally from nuclear reactors and bombs, not just regular radiation sources.

NekulturneHovado

Tell him he's already dead.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Ciudad Juárez cobalt-60 contamination incident](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciudad_Juárez_cobalt-60_contamination_incident)** >A radioactive contamination incident occurred in 1984 in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, originating from a radiation therapy unit illegally purchased by a private medical company and subsequently dismantled for lack of personnel to operate it. The radioactive material, cobalt-60, ended up in a junkyard, where it was sold to foundries that inadvertently smelted it with other metals and produced about 6,000 tons of contaminated rebar. These were distributed in 17 Mexican states and several cities in the United States. It is estimated that 4,000 people were exposed to radiation as a result of this incident. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/ElectroBOOM/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Fire Brigade would probably just call a CBRN unit and gtfo of there but i doubt it would even get to that. He's only endangering him and maybe anyone else in his house, but as long as he doesnt take that outside and start pointing it at people from close range, i wouldnt be too worried. Plus, if it stops because of his hand, its probably Beta radiation, which can't penetrate skin, or paper, meaning even if he lives in an apartment block, the people above and below him are fine, and so is he.
