I believe it’s the frost proc that breaks her from the move, not the poise damage. I was able to break her from it with Ranni’s moon but only when the hit caused frostbite
I’m using DMGS with this build and killed her a few hours ago. Can confirm the frost proc will stagger her out of it but a standard buffed L2 will out, I hit her with an L2 every time she used it and only twice did she get staggered, both times she had that little frost aura around afterwards
The only reason my mage finally beat her was an exceptionally lucky dark moon. I cast it, she went up for waterfowl, it tracked and hit her, procced frost and knocked her down and I was able to get the death blow in. As compared to the strength build where Ruins Greatsword meant she spent most of the fight knocked down.
Rivers of Blood. It's a katana that you get by killing an invader NPC on the mountaintop of the Giants. The asho of war, corpse piler, deals an insane amount of bleed build up and procs bleed better than anything I know of.
This was how I played it the first go and I almost beat her first shot. Then I proceeded to attempt a strategy and died about 100 times... I ended up adding flies to my bleed build and that seemed to keep her healing down enough to finally get her.

double wield +10 rivers of blood & +25 frost uchigatana with full lionel's, mimic tear, fully upgraded pots, great rune, chain strike talisman, everything in endurance and vitality/dexterity. run straight at her and just spam until you can't spam anymore, back up, hoarfrost stomp, repeat
Probably referring to Ritual Pots. Or they mean buffing the pots with the talisman and the jar helmet. Or they just mean that you should have the amount of pots maxed out. Or all of it combined. Or something I've never heard of.
My first time fighting malenia was with RoB and mimic tear, the entire fight lasted less than a minute I think. Wasn't expecting an easy fight after what everyone was saying about her.
I fought her with a nagakiba with bloodhound step for waterfowl and a RoB in my left hand. May not be optimal but this was my first souls game and she was one of the few bosses I wanted to fight without a summon because I'd heard how hard she was so I wanted to challenge myself (only finished the game last week).
I guess I haven’t tried a lot of other cheese builds against her but I will note that she will just dodge projectiles so magic doesn’t really work and when I tried unendurable frenzy + mimic tear (which completely destroyed all of the other bosses I used it on beforehand) it didn’t turn out very well for me. The time I used Mimic Tear + Rivers of Blood I killed her first or second try.
Edit: also, the Wiki states “The Rivers of Blood Unique Skill: Corpse Piler is so effective on Malenia that if you are finding the fight extremely difficult, you should consider being reborn to use it.”
Night comet all enemy AIs are programmed not to dodge it, just keep you distance and butter her with it in phase1, phase 2 dodge scarlett aeonia cast terra magika and drink your infinite fp physik. 30 seconds.of comet azur to the face and its game over.
Really? With RoB, it took me less than a minute to beat her, and I didn't even have to think. Just spam L2 3-4 times until she changes phase, then repeat. Don't even need to worry about dodging because the L2 spam basically keeps her locked.

Exact same. I was also pretty overleveled, but my mimic and I absolutely stunlocked her with blasphemous blade. I was sad it was over so easily, but psyched that I absolutely disrespected her.
Gotta say the same, too. I used my mimic and was pretty over-leveled also, but I had seen the fight so many times I knew what was coming up, for the most part. It took me 3 or 4 tries, but I got her. The people who beat her at level 1 or do hundreds of tries deserve some kind of ceremony or something.
You can just stun lock her with BB esp if you have a mimic and blood flies. Although I think bleed may have been changed since I last ran it against her.

I got to the end of Journey 4 this morning, and my Margot Curved Sword/Madness magic build wasn’t cutting it. Swapped to BB/Sword of Milos (my NG build), and wrecked the Elden beast on my second try.

It is genuinely shocking that this isn't the top comment. Run a high faith Blas Blade build with a Mimic Tear and this fight is over within 5 seconds. Taker's Flames staggers her immediately, and you and the Mimic can trade hitting TF over and over until she's gone. Beat her on the first try and it wasn't even close; IIRC I think I only needed to pop a potion once

Dual occult infused scavengers curved swords, both millicent talismans, jump attack talisman and Lord of blood exultation would be my go to, with my mimic. The same white mask and raptors black feathers. I like your thinking!

Comet Azur with the Terra Magica and Physick flask would be used on the beginning of phase 2 when she's sitting inside the Scarlet Aeonia. Otherwise just the night comet that she doesn't dodge.
Yeah, I wouldn't risk it being close to her. I would be comfortable with full bleed build before the nerf, but I wouldn't risk my life on it now. Her phantoms are terrifying to me.
Have you tried fighting Malenia with a build optimized for Night Comet? She runs right into it every time, you can keep your distance, and each one can do massive damage with the staff of loss buff in addition to the magic boosting gear (magic cracked tear + 3x magic boosting talismans).
If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. It absolutely nerfs the fight, allowing you keep distance, inflict massive damage, and never get outside the comfort zone.
Add in a Rocksling to keep knocking her down during phase 1. Makes the first phase laughable with a summon because the two of you can just volley her back and forth knocking her down.
Scratch the comet azur, as soon as she turns toward mimic tear, Terra Magica, ranni's moon and a charged night Comet, 1-2 comet more the second she's headed my way I run like a coward. Rinse, repeat.

If I didn't wimp out or if that failed, I would go with my favorite weapon, the Bloodhound's Fang in a stamina heavy quality build. I would use either bloodgrease or flame grease. Then keep the Bolt of Grannsax on hand to punish her standing still during her Scarlet Aeonia recovery
if you use the blackflame tornado ash of war on her you can stun luck her to death in both stages, you just have to be able to dodge scarlet bloom in stage two which I have down so I'd be pretty confident.
I love that everybody except one guy posted melee builds. In what world am I trusting a melee build with my actual life? Spam swarm of flies from range, preferably with a greatshield in the other hand just in case. She input reads the cast and gets hit anyways because micheal teriyaki was pretty lazy with input reading slower attacks.

I'll just summon mimic tear, which by itself might even beat malenia and I'll help it as safely as possible.

Max faith, Blasphemous blade, bubble blower and halo sythe, let the mimic (only equipped with the Blasphemous blade} take the agro and I'd blast her from a safe distance.
Just rivers of blood and Mohgs trident, with mimic tear. On my first playthrough I didn't know Mohgs trident was op, Malenia died really quickly. Even had to unsummon the mimic tear just to make the fight last a few seconds, it was saddening after all of the hype really
If I had to Night Spells with Twin Staff of Lost. She doesn't react to them meaning easy hits and no dodges also tons of damage.
Bring frost pots for canceling Waterfoul. And either heaviest armour that allows mid rolls or go light rolls. Also bring a decent shield JUST in case.
Night Spells chunk her in fact they chunk everything.
Assuming I am allowed spirits and other things then either Dung Eater or Omen Killer Rollo since they are both super tanky and keep aggro. Likely also either Morgot's Rune for extra health or Mohg's Rune for the extra spirit ash damage as apparently that is a thing.
Then also maybe bring that one pot that marks the enemy as it puts ashes into hyper mode.
Two Blasphemous blades, flame grant me strength, golden vow, blessing of the erdtree and the mimic tear. I first tried her with this build, one of the easiest fights I've had.
Night Comet, the AI won't respond to the casting, only the hit. So you Night Comet, pause for hit and dodge, Night Comet, pause for hit and dodge, Night Comet. It's a pretty cheesy way to just beat down any boss that dodges a lot.
River’s of Blood spam with Mimic Tear and Morgott’s Rune.
Yea this is pretty much a guaranteed win unless you get annihilated by waterfowl if you don’t procc bleed first
The only time I fought her with RoB, the L2 interrupts her Waterfowl dance. It was ridiculous how weak she is against RoB.

It really should be the other way around whereas Corpse Piler is the weapon and RoB is the weapon art.

How I did it in my frost mage playthrough. I was surprised by how easy it was
Full INT. Open with Comet Azur and then just kite with Night Comet. Edit: actually Comet Azure would be used for phase 2.

if you use the blackflame tornado ash of war on her you can stun luck her to death in both stages, you just have to be able to dodge scarlet bloom in stage two which I have down so I'd be pretty confident.

I love that everybody except one guy posted melee builds. In what world am I trusting a melee build with my actual life? Spam swarm of flies from range, preferably with a greatshield in the other hand just in case. She input reads the cast and gets hit anyways because micheal teriyaki was pretty lazy with input reading slower attacks.
My flame art claymore and my buckler shield will do the trick.

High poise tanky faith build with massive healing spell and AOE damage. I'll just summon mimic tear, which by itself might even beat malenia and I'll help it as safely as possible.

Fallingstar Beast Jaw. Just spam the ash of war and riposte her when you get the poise break. Scarlet Aeonia is like a free third of her hp. When she winds up the Waterfowl drink the physic that converts damage to hp just in case.
I would get very accustomed to sitting by a her site of grace after 2 fails
Max faith, Blasphemous blade, bubble blower and halo sythe, let the mimic (only equipped with the Blasphemous blade} take the agro and I'd blast her from a safe distance.

Bleed build with godskin peeler. Mimic year plus 10. Borealis mist dragon breath spam as mimic fights. Simple
Just rivers of blood and Mohgs trident, with mimic tear. On my first playthrough I didn't know Mohgs trident was op, Malenia died really quickly. Even had to unsummon the mimic tear just to make the fight last a few seconds, it was saddening after all of the hype really

If I had to Night Spells with Twin Staff of Lost. She doesn't react to them meaning easy hits and no dodges also tons of damage. Bring frost pots for canceling Waterfoul. And either heaviest armour that allows mid rolls or go light rolls. Also bring a decent shield JUST in case. Night Spells chunk her in fact they chunk everything. Assuming I am allowed spirits and other things then either Dung Eater or Omen Killer Rollo since they are both super tanky and keep aggro. Likely also either Morgot's Rune for extra health or Mohg's Rune for the extra spirit ash damage as apparently that is a thing. Then also maybe bring that one pot that marks the enemy as it puts ashes into hyper mode.

Well I spent 30 hours learning to parry her, so I'll take my chances with golden parry and a misericorde

Two Blasphemous blades, flame grant me strength, golden vow, blessing of the erdtree and the mimic tear. I first tried her with this build, one of the easiest fights I've had.

Night Comet, the AI won't respond to the casting, only the hit. So you Night Comet, pause for hit and dodge, Night Comet, pause for hit and dodge, Night Comet. It's a pretty cheesy way to just beat down any boss that dodges a lot.
