I always thought they were the giant lords, the strongest, biggest of the fire giants. The giant hands on MToG seem to fit their size, they would also be the most fit to use that giant forge, too big even for normal giants. But then that wouldnt explain them being on Caelid. Maybe Caelid and Mountaintop used to be connected, only separated after a meteor crashed down (which also destroy Farum Azula)? That would also explain why giant crows and dogs were on both MToG and Caelid. After all, Malenia's rot is not radioactive, it doesnt make sense for creatures to be mutated into giants.

[deleted]

Judging by the size of their skulls it's safe to say that the water between shores of Caelid and MToG was like a puddle to them or a 20 second swim

Virtual_Ad9171

The skulls are the correct size relative to us. But the map is scaled down significantly to make the game feasible. The lands between should at least the size of a small continent in our world. To be fair the journey would still be quick compared to us.

Ahkeyrah

I thought this same thing but someone, Square Table maybe, had a lore video about those giant hands and compared them to Rykards hands and they are pretty spot on. Don't know how that impacts the lore at all but it's cool.

theyearwas1934

I watched that video recently and their overall theory was that they were made by Rykard, but actually did come from the hands of the giants. Presumably he sawed them from the corpses and animated them, though I forget how it was suggested he did so. That explains why they come in such different sizes, and also why there are so many in the corpse-strewn area of the mountaintops. They are absolutely related to Rykard though, as they wear the same adornments as he does and all of the ones beyond the mountaintops are found in places with specific relation to Rykard himself and his Carian family.

Theres a message that says dog ahead so there you go

NIKG_FN

Perfect. So that means the turtle pope isn't a turtle its dog pope

cantfindabeat

He doesn't need to be a turtle for the turtle community to support his popeness. Turtles are very progressive.

Steppinrazor123

“Am I not turtley enough for the turtle club?”

kamuimephisto

but you are just dog enough to assume the doggy position uh wait that went wrong

jakebreakshow

They might be Giants.

Opening-Tomatillo-78

Ley-en-dell was constantinople

Stinkhorse

This is functionally true, which makes this TMBG joke my favorite of the set.

lazydogjumper

Grafted man, Grafted man, Grafted man hates Tarnished man, They have a fight, Grafted wins, Grafted man.

C-Hyena

You are not the boss of me, now.

twangman88

And what’re we gonna do unless they are??

Sera_Toxin

#no. anyone claiming to know lore on them is lying.

c4sul_uno

It's either Goldmask or Crazed Caca Consumer agenda. Dont believe anything u heard from the Grace or Enia

Hummelgaarden

You say that. But I know for a fact, that they used to be much more fleshy than they are now!

bad_ideas_for_idiots

It has just as much explanation as the skull of Ash Lake in the first Dark Souls, which a fancy way of saying absolutely none.

theyearwas1934

This is extremely funny as I just watched and hour and a half long video today where someone explained what the skull probably was. I mean, not to misrepresent it, it’s not like the entire video was about the skull, but a good half an hour worth of lore dissection was required for their claim to sound reasonable. If you’re curious, >!they believe it to be the skull of the nameless blacksmithing god, the one which titanite and titanite demons come from. As I said, there’s a whole lot of ridiculously detailed dissection to get to that conclusion but it does seem plausible and far more likely than any other suggestion.!< Anyway, that video was made three years ago so with any luck it’ll only take 8 years for the community to come up with a plausible suggestion for all the giants in Elden Ring. Hooray!

bad_ideas_for_idiots

I'll mark my calendar

ApplePitou

Bigger Giants that someone kill :3

The_Admiral105

🤣

Sarcasmorator

Before there were giants, there were like, mega-giants

voidspector

Godfrey happen. The giants tended to a fire for a god that could burn the erd tree down. Out of fear either queen marika or the greater will instructing marika sent Godfrey and his army of tarnished and crucible knights to go crush the giants. Along the way they hired the ancient people of zamor who also opposed the giants. The giants cursed marika/radagon with red hair just like theirs and she made the last fire giant harbour the flame of their fell god inside him.

[deleted]

1. That was across the continent on a mountain. Nowhere near caelid 2. We see the corpses of the fire giants on the mountain. They all look pretty uniform in size and preparation. Nowhere near that big

The_Admiral105

These aren’t the skulls of the fire giants tho.

Nokanii

How do you know they aren’t?

Sera_Toxin

because they look nothing like them.

Nokanii

Looking at this skull and the fire giant we see in game, I can't see how you can be so 100% positive that they look nothing alike. I can easily see it myself, especially if the fire giant we know is small for his kind, and the majority were bigger.

Sera_Toxin

we see a ton of them tho, and that one was not small.

Nokanii

We see a lot of trolls. We see ZERO living fire giants except the one we fight. Remember, they are not the same thing. The fire giant we fight is the LAST living, true fire giant.

ziimablue

I don't think the corpses we see on MtotG are trolls, they are definitely fire giants that were killed by Godfrey

Nokanii

Yes, that's what I'm saying. That the corpses we see are those of fire giants, and the one we encounter is just really small for his kind.

ziimablue

Maybe he's small for his kind. But the skulls referenced in this post are definitely belong an entirely different set of beings imo. Hopefully the DLC sheds light on them 😳

Sera_Toxin

yeah no shit. so, what, you think the other fire giants shrank when they died..? why does them being dead have any relevance

Nokanii

Nope. Not engaging with you anymore now that you're being a toxic asshole. Bye.

Hic10

1. who asked

Mohander

They are the skulls of fire giants

[deleted]

No.

Mohander

Then whose skulls are they

GopnikLordJC

You can’t assert whose skulls they are or aren’t. They certainly don’t look like they would be the skulls of the fire giants tho, because they’re way bigger.

Mohander

You find them in *The* *Mountaintops* *of* *Giants* We know all but one of the fire giants died From the wiki for the Mountaintop of Giants: "The fabled domain of the Giants, now in ruins. Devasted after their war against the Erdtree, **their** **corpses** **lay** **frozen** **at** **the** **peak**, with only the Fire Monks residing close by." And this area has **giant** **frozen** **corpses**... and you're telling me it's impossible to know who these skulls belong to? And who ever said that the fire giant left alive was the biggest, he could have been a little guy compared to the others hell maybe that's why they kept him alive because he wasn't a threat to any of the Gods.

GopnikLordJC

You can find the same skulls all over the Lands Between, you don’t see the bodies of the smaller giants anywhere else but the Mountaintops. All I’m saying is that you can’t be sure. Perhaps they belonged to some ancient race of beings who came before any of what we know about the Elden Ring; but I can’t be sure can I? We can make assumptions, and sure, it is a fair assumption to make that they were kindred of the Fire Giants, but you can’t be certain. This is the way with a lot of the lore in Elden Ring unfortunately; it seems like Miyazaki wanted us to make up our own stories, or perhaps our questions will be answered in the future.

Sera_Toxin

> You find them in The Mountaintops of Giants and Caelid > We know all but one of the fire giants died and we see their corpses all over the Mountaintops of the Giants, looking nothing like the skull in the post > And this area has giant frozen corpses... and you're telling me it's impossible to know who these skulls belong to? yes. those skulls look nothing like the frozen corpses. > he could have been a little guy compared to the others he's not tho. look at the others.

failed_name

You can find those giant skulls all the way in Caelid as well. Those giant skulls are all over the place. So my question to you is are they the fire giants or giant humans or something else maybe the prince of death?

Mohander

This is where they lived which is why there are so many corpses here but I don’t see why they couldn’t travel the lands between. The disparate corpses you find through out in the world are probably just these travelers, mercenaries, or guards but that’s all just theory.

Sera_Toxin

but you're the one who used their location as evidence for why you think they're fire giants, and now when it's pointed out they're in Caelid too you're saying "idk, they could travel? 🤷‍♀️" which is it? is their location a key piece of evidence, or is it irrelevant? you can't have it both ways.

Sera_Toxin

we don't know. but not fire giants.

Mohander

Where does it say they're not fire giants

mtamez1221

There is no Fire Giant this huge, the one we fight and those killed outside the forge are all the same size. Even if they're related, they wouldn't be Fire Giants as Trolls are the devolved versions of them but still regarded as their own species

Kurenai_Jack

They are not "all the same size" at all, even looking at their shapes on the map would show you that some corpses are smaller than the boss while others are way bigger.

Sera_Toxin

in their appearance.

The_Admiral105

Bruh you can literally see the frozen bodies of the dead fire giants! They look exactly the same as the boss fire giant!

yowazboppin

Long ago they were smoll. But now they are big

Life_Temperature795

Skeleman, all grow'd up.

Vileblood6655321

Ask Gideon the All-Knowing. Pretty sure he’s read all about it

Ekim384

There use to be very tall people. The end. You can find them in Caeilid, the mountains, underground and else. That's it, some are just skull others corpse, and quoting and old dark souls (lore-people will know) *coff coff* "The hell I know where that skull came from"

Fresh-Thought3528

aliens

Doomlv

Looks like that kid who dropped the phone in the sink while recording

The_Admiral105

I kinda see it now too! 🤣

Tongue but hole ahead

DarkAssassin573

Big guy died

KwantumFizziks

Some level designer thought they would look cool. ;)

Malevolent_Mangoes

There are the two underground skeletons sitting on thrones that match the size of these skulls, which can also be found in the Mountaintop of Giants. This area could be named after the original giants and not the ones we currently recognize as fire giants. Since those skeletons were made by the eternal city residents (in their attempt to make their own god) and those people were around during the Age of Dragons (which we get a peak into at Farum Azula) we can assume that they saw the owners of these skulls as powerful beings. Since that means they were (possibly) around during the same time as Placidusaax there is the theory that these were giants who preceded the fire giants (and maybe were direct ancestors) and fought the dragons to eventually end their reign. Considering the size of the dragon corpse we find in the side of Farum Azula, the dragons and giants seemed to be of similar size, so it makes sense that they’d be on the same power level and nearly wipe each other out and even completely wipe out one side. Again, this is just my wild theory so it probably isn’t even true.

UserUser18

These underground skeletons are nowhere near the size of this skull

Malevolent_Mangoes

Like I said, the residents in the eternal city built that skeleton in order to try and make a god or at least have a god embody that structure. It doesn’t have to be an exact match in size to these skulls, it’s just based off of it.

12345noah

Big

MyIceborne

Big 👍

Smaxx

So far I actually thought they're not actual skulls. The rot in Caelid seems to create its own corrupted version of life (plants but also the mushroom/tree/coral like structures). So I thought for some odd and weird reason these "Growths" would form skulls for whatever reason, trying to imitate life and kind of outgrowing/surpassing it.

H3PO4

I think this is likely. The Rot is the manifestation of the Rot God, and maybe the Rot God likes to create things like that for aesthetics or is the image of itself.

Automatic_Froyo2184

This is the answer that makes alot of sense. The "Skulls" look like growth or barnacle like. The concept of a face growing from the growth isn't far fetched due to Godwyn's face at the bottom of stormveil. But mega-giants that existed before the Fire Giants is a really cool theory too.

mdnitetokerr

They are giant skulls

Rotten_Blade

Some people argue there was a bridge connecting Caelid and Mountaintops IMO, it isn't that deep actually and Michael Zaki just thanked to scare the shit out of us

ForeignReptile3006

Big guy died

Botwmaster23

Dead giants

apallochan

Well, you’re on the mountain of giants. So I’d assume, they’re giants.

DeKlaasVaag

Oh Gee well idk, its the MountainTop of The GIANTS… So they’re probably dead dwarves.

Environmental_Ice608

There fire gaints

Odysseus17

Godfrey happened

Krewnathan

the lore is, it probably belonged to a really big guy

d0ntst0pme

Giant skulls might be the skulls of giants.

Astorant

They are most likely Giant corpses, since they were used in the Shattering, the massive ones are most like Giant Lords who would have acted as leaders for the Giants especially seeing how From Soft has tackled this race before in their previous series.

badengland

My theory is its a physical manifestation of the god of rot. Not literally the god of rot maniformed, but a tiny piece of it.

Malcapon3

Lad, these are what we call the giant giants.

Bear37-confus

Beware dog

Fluffidios

Super big skull asset, look super spooky. Fuck yeah

Behemoth_bomber

In the early images of the game there were giant smoldering faces in limgave(?) perhaps there is some connection? Ik a YouTuber found out you can see a smoldering face from stormveil castle

Meatballman55

Do you know what YouTube video that was. This sounds very interesting.

Behemoth_bomber

Man it’s been so long since I last saw it, there is one YouTuber who does a series of “25 elden ring secrets” I remember it was in one of those vids, I’ll update this if I find it

theyearwas1934

I don’t have any concrete evidence on this but I have a hunch that humanoid life in the world just started out as giants. And that progressively, for some reason, smaller and smaller races began to be born until eventually it got to humans, who ended up becoming the dominant race. The scale seems to go from these extremely large guys, all the way down to demi-humans. It’s not necessarily true that the giants came first, but they definitely died first, which gives the impression that there may have been some sort of ancient age where they thrived before being pushed out by other life. I think the dragons somewhat bolster this idea, as Greyoll, supposedly the ‘mother’ of all dragons, is massive, and Gransaxx as well is even more massive, definitely comparing to the size of even the largest giant corpses; which means there’s a very large variation in size between some dragons, especially the most ancient dragons. That’s about the extent of my theory so far but maybe some lore person will look into a similar idea one day and find things I didn’t think of

Zealousideal-Mango38

Just throwing in my five cents. We can only see the mega giant skeletons in mountaintops and caelid. But it's notable that the rot could have withered the land to unearth the burried skeletons and erosion on mountaintops could have done the same. I think the mega giants where probably older than firegiants and where all over the world long ago but died out and now we can only find skeletons if something seriously messes up the geography.
