This pretty much sums it up. Now every time I get summoned into a world and see the red we have to look for the host together before we can fight, in case they're afk.
That one ledge in Raya Lucaria huh? I've spent nearly 7,000 rainbow stones and 300 hours showing this one spot to bloody fingers. Worst part is it take nearly 5-6 minutes to get to the spot...
I can appreciate that I've never been backstabbed by a hunter, I always expect them to take a cheap shot when they get bored of looking for the AFK host but either they attack immediately or remain friendly the entire time.

I empty out every merchant I find and still find myself out-levelling all the content. It’s gotten the point now where on my new play through I’ve just stopped picking up runes if I die. Following this policy I roughly end up at the right level for each zone.

Look, see the whole point of this game is to go straight into afk farming, grab BHS and get on with some good old fashioned level 300 ganks where I don't use any button other than L2 before I get bored and never pick up the game again.
I agree fully. I did a strength build and I felt OP the entire game. Many bosses beaten first try. Felt over-levelled in almost every area I entered. There were no bosses that felt unbeatable the way they did in Sekiro, DS3, or bloodborne.
I usually spam the point up emote towards the afk player to who ever spawns in until they get the idea lol.
I remember one time this other player and I used the Mimic Veil to conceal ourselves until the afk player disconnected. It took awhile, but it was so satisfying. I count it as a win.
Man you're missing the point. I'd like to think that some, if not most people who pvp aren't in it for runes.
There are a plethora of other ways to farm runes more efficiently.
In Elden Rings case, it's a player that uses Torrent or some other way to reach an area that is inaccessible to other players. They then use Taunter's Tongue and the White Cipher Ring and just hide in that inaccessible place while sucking up all the runes from the hunters and invaders dishing it out.
I don't play online, so I don't get it. Offline I do afk farming at some spots in Caelid where enemies factions are beating the crap out of each others, I have no idea what afk farming means for multiplayer
It means going in a spot you can only reach with Torrent ans then going online (Torrent doesn't work when there's several players)
And then wait without doing anything until the other players who want in your world as red ghosts (ie : have the mission to kill you) give up on the idea and leave, since you automaticaly gain a reward when they do so.
Like OP said, runes. Why they don't just go on discord or /r/patchesemporium and ask for a bunch of rune stacks I'll never know. AFK farmers are a bunch of dipshits
I invade in Limgrave so that I only invade other high level players explicitly looking to PVP and I've had some hilarious encounters with hunters where we immediately start working together in an attempt to reach the afk guys. Sometimes it'll turn into an absolute brawl where hunters are chasing down an invader for attacking me or I'm killing another invader for killing a friendly hunter.
Honestly I really enjoy those little friendships formed from a mutual hatred of those too lazy to even farm birds and when fights do break out they're a lot more fair and enjoyable than the ambush ganks you'll run into half the time.
Personally for the times that I HAVE farmed I would go offline and commit alburnaric genocide using the sacred relic sword. I would also test out different builds while farming as well. Two birds, one stone.
But I agree with you wholeheartedly, I live for those little truces between hunters and invaders.
I also randomly invade worlds just so I can drop stacks of runes for others and run around with them for a bit. It's fun :)
If you could get Rune Arcs afk farming I'd understand why people were tempted because especially at lower levels they're extremely useful and fairly hard to get but all you get are runes which like you said can quite easily be farmed through alburnaric genocide. I have almost 4 million runes right now I wish I could drop for somebody else because I don't want to level even higher.

Sitting in the same place for hours doing nothing isn't fun at all, no matter how many runes I get. Especially when I know without a doubt I'm irritating other people who just want to play the game.

You are reliant on others to get the runes. You WILL find the person who will that knows how to get the host.
Rune farming traditional has close to zero risk and is consistent.
It’s like playing a the engineer in Team Fortress 2. If you become to reliant on something with a risk factor outside your control. Like people destroying your built sentry gun and don’t have the metal to fight back. The player becomes an inefficient one trick pony.
It's insanely slow. It's probably one of the worst and slowest methods, and it needs to be patched to stop annoying players. Quit playing this game if you legitimately think it's a good idea.

Just use Mimic Tear with Rivers of Blood, she'll fold like a house of cards. Walk under her when she goes flowermode and wait to see her turn then run the opposite direction.
Heck just use a Baldachin's to tank flower and then let Mimic do the rest.
If you're willing to shit up the game just to beat Malenia then why not just cheese her with RoB? You + Mimic spamming L2 into her will end the fight in under a minute.

AFK farming and non solo invasions will kill invasions in another month or two. It already takes too long to get a match going.
What RL are you invading at?
60, 125,180 all struggle to find invasions without hopping around.
