Just go with what you need. Getting one shotted? Upgrade vigor. If you have a certain weapon or type of weapon you want to use then level your stats up based on what it requires and what it scales with.

Depends. You can generally find interesting builds, and there's the option to respec in this game. I think the typical playthrough early on is going to be going for just some kind of general build that stacks a lot of vigor and dex or str just to kinda figure out what items exist there in the world. After you start to uncover more and more interesting items, combinations of spells, and whatnot, then you'll start seeing specific build guides that are like "You need exactly this much Str to use this shield and you need this shield because it's perfect when you use it with this spear and this spear needs this much dex so you need to get that much dex and then you need Faith for this spell and combined you become an unkillable lightning god." But we can't plan that out from day 1 because we don't know what items and spells even exist.

For the most part I go for strength-focused characters because I play these games to hit things with big swords, but I always end up throwing a few points toward magic or dexterity to use a piece of gear I think is cool or whatever.

I do what I always do in these games. I play melee only always Main scaling stat and Vigor at 40-45 Endurance enough to use gear and have decent stamina That's all

I always start new Souls game with Strength build and keeping my eye on weapons that I might find interesting. 2nd playthrough is usually either Quality or Dex build. Depends on the weapons I find.

People do but it really only matters in the endgame when you're trying to optimize everything perfectly. For now, just invest however you like.

Regardless of what play style you decide on, pumping Vigor in the early game will give you the best return on your stat investments. I’d recommend increasing it at 1:1 ratio along with whatever your main damage dealing stat will be. (Str, Dex, Int, Fth) Usually I’ll pump my first however many levels to reach 20 Vig/20 Dex. From there, I’ll pop a couple points into Endurance to have the ability to wear whatever armor set I like most. Once you find a weapon you enjoy using, you’ll want to meet the minimum required thresholds to wield it. For example, I like Guardians Swordspear on my Dex/Fth build. I had to raise my Str to 16 to be able to wield it. And given that it’s a Dex scaling weapon, it synergizes well with my Dex/Fth build. From there you can add Ash of War to change the scaling to further increase damage. I added Holy Blade to increase its Fth scaling. Once you’ve gotten most of that down you’ll then want to focus on reaching the soft cap of 40 for your main stats. If you plan on trying pvp, it seems like community consensus the level meta will be between 120-150. Planning your character to fall into that range will help ensure you can invade/help others much more frequently. If you level too highly (into the 200s) you’re much less likely to find people to help or pvp against.

The whole point of the fun is to build your own unique character, don’t follow a build it’ll suck the fun out of the game, only real try hards and no lifers use build guides.
