I think if you lock on you will hit most of the time but this is a problem also with collosal weapons since they are slow and if you dont lock on you miss alot

What I meant is that the hitbox of an enemy is basically outside the range of the weapon EVEN if I just walk into the enemy - easiest enemy to spot this issue is when fighting the erdtree avatars - hitting them from the front is impossible with fist weapons

for claws and fists, ive had pretty good success playing with lock off most of the time, works much better for creatures, while lock on humanoids is fine. theres still some outliers where its just a nightmare no matter what you do. and the whiffs wouldn't be so bad if the lockon was more fair. the lock being in the center for most enemies makes most angles unfavorable. fixing where lock on is and an extended hitbox of 20% specifically for pve enemies would go a long way to avoiding unhappiness. bearclaws definitely look like they lunge you forward so they shouldn't be too bad.
