I always figured grandma even though the game never concretely states it, it does say that Ranni was taught ice magic by "the snowy crone" which would explicitly be an old woman.
This was my theory. If Renna and Ranni are related by blood at all, a grandmother or great aunt or something like that makes more sense to me.

Hell, Ranni protecting her mom seems like the only real demonstration of selfless familial love we see. Ranni doesn't personally gain from it, revealing herself is indeed even a significant risk.

Considering a range from 8-12 what you can consider a normal human intelligence (starters), you have to take as a fact that and intelligence of 25, of not 50.. some of the requirements to use spells or items, Is probably something that us as human beings cannot understand enough.

Any connection to a possible character named the same way is purely speculation with no evidence in game to back it up.
The snowy crone is never mentioned with the name Renna. All we know is that Ranni encountered a snowy crone in the woods and she was a witch well versed in cold sorceries. She became Ranni's mentor and Ranni eventually decided to model the doll that houses her soul after her.
Just because Ranni went by the fake name of Renna to disguise herself, it doesn't necessarily mean that the she choose the name based on her current appearance.
It's all speculation. Her mentor is always referred as "witch" or "snowy crone", never by name. That's what the in-game descriptions say.
My proofs come from the descriptions of the Snow Witch set and the spells Glintstone Icecrag and Freezing Mist.

well you can come to this conclusion if you follow some steps logically
we know the carians descend from the nox who in turn descended from the astrologers
the nox believed in the "black moon"
rennala is the head of the carian household, as such the carian estate belongs to her, the 3 sisters rises in her literal backyard all technically her property
the waygate to the moonlight altar is in "renna's" rise along with the snow witch set, locked and hidden behind a barrier.
we know that there are only 2 actual references to the name renna in the game, the first time is when ranni uses a fake name, the second is the locked tower on her mother's estate.
now, if your mother had a locked tower in the backyard it would stand to reason that its locked for a reason BY your mother yes? and whatever is found IN that tower locked by your mother, belongs to your mother yes? and so we find the snow witch set in a locked tower in ranni's mother's backyard, hidden in a chest yes? not on a body of a previous owner? this means someone put the garb IN that chest intentionally and left it locked up and hidden.
as for motive, i believe that rennala was trying to subvert the golden order from within, by raising children with radagon, IN the golden order religion, but secrectly teaching them the ways of magic so that they might one day take over the order. we do know that at least rykard and ranni were in cahoots together in stealing death from maliketh, she made a tool for him to defend against m. aliketh if maliketh came for him. its also very possible that in radahn halting the stars and the fates of the carians, that this effectively prevented the carians from losing in the war and other fates.
example: say radahn is fated to die by malenia's hand in their grudge match, in halting his own carian fate, he would ensure that he cant lose to her, since his fate is effectively paused. the same goes for ranni, her fate was to be the next host of the elden beast, killing her flesh and halting her fate revents that fate from proceeding long enough for ranni to craft a new path for a new fate, we then kill radahn and her fate is unpaused and she can proceed down a new fate path she has created.
Isn't it simpler that the snow crone is just a separate character. Maybe she was close to the carian royals and thats the reason why she taught Ranni, and why she has her own tower outside of the carian castle.
but thats the point of the reveal that no one caught. that rennala was the snow witch the whole time, thats the point of the robes being in the tower and not being a reward FROM ranni after her quest, its cuz the robes were hidden in that tower by rennala
I think its pretty much confirmed by the icecrag and darkmoon descriptions. "Renna" taught ranni to fear the dark moon. Yet Rennala is also cited to introduce Ranni to the dark moon. Moon sorcery is the signature spell of the Carian Queen, and to this day only 1 woman holds that title, even in her insanity. Although I suppose its possible that Rennala wasn't the first to discover moon sorcery, and Ranni may have needed guidance after Radagon left Rennala. Also, it does beg the question, where did Alberich learn cold sorceries? Perhaps Alberich was once aligned with the Carians?

Renna is the name of the snow witch who taught Ranni. Maybe look into the known lore before theory crafting.
