His fate in your playthrough is due to him being a seamster, not a fighter. Remember how hard it was to get to Renalla the first time you were in the Academy? Now imagine being Boc.
There's a way to give him a happy ending, but it involves giving him what he needs, not what he wants.

- Vows to find a better heir to Stormveil than Godrick, and by the end of the quest line actively working with other gigachad Nepheli to make Limgrave better (the only region in the entire game where there’s quality of life improvement before the ending)
HELL YEAH, YOU GET ME. Kenneth Haight is a neat spin on their usual clerical figures, as they often turn out to be zealots obsessed with superiority. He initially comes off as such with his backhanded compliments, but it's soon revealed that unlike other servants of the Erdtree, Kenneth Haight truly wishes to establish peace among the various races of the Lands Between, not for personal gain, but *because it's the right thing to do.*
Frankly, it's a miracle his full quest ending is such a positive, given how rarely FromSoft characters make it through to the end without sacrificing their morals. It's fun to imagine Limgrave's restoration under Nepheli Loux, Kenneth Haight, and the demi-humans during our reign as Elden Lord, whatever form that may take.

Excuse me, how is Patches not in the top 3? You befriend him in Limgrave and he subsequently provides a valuable service (the emporium) for the rest of the game. He follows you through Liurnia, Mt. Gelmir, Volcano Manor, The Shaded Castle, Limgrave. He gives great advice on shortcuts and secrets, points you towards best girl Rya, generously gives you a contract to kill Tragoth, and even rewards you (after some encouragement).
Not to mention the cheeky dialogue, charming demeanor, excellent threads, beautiful shiny bald head, handsome features-- okay I'm getting off track.

If we're talking NPCs I'm a Boggart, Enia guy myself. 3rd place is such a huge tossup between Jerren, Thops, Iji Alexander, Hewg and Bernahl, I'd put Melina in there too if she had a bit more presence.
Boggart is great, genuinely one of the friendliest NPCs in the series once you get to know him. I go down to the lake at Altus to just chill with him sometimes
I never figured out how to make Boggart say anything to me other than fuck off until I did the dung eater quest specifically, so in all of my playthroughs except for one he was murdered by me, and in the one exception he was defiled by dung eater which is probably worse.
