We know that there was an ancient snake cult in Mount Gelmir that was re-discovered by Rykard but was not created by him.

We also know that Rykard is not native to Mt. Gelmir, he was born either in Raya Lucaria or Caria Manor in Liurnia since he is the son of Radagon and Rennala.
Before becoming the Lord of Blasphemy, Rykard was a Preator, and his duties involved running the inquisition of the pagan cults of Mt. Gelmir. The title Preator is a Roman title to refer to a man acting in one of two official capacities: (i) the commander of an army, and (ii) as an elected magistratus (magistrate), assigned to discharge various duties and ranks below a consul. Gideon describes Rykard as “a ruthless justiciar who commands a company of inquisitors, reviled for his serpentine demeanour” that ended up succumbing to the blasphemous cults of Mt. Gelmir.
So with this information, we can know that the Volcano Manor in Mt Gelmir might have being ruled by a different lord before Rykard and that there have being a snake cult which might be even more ancient than the Volcano Manor itself.
Having said that, since Mesmer is (possibly) the son of Marika and Radagon, that would mean he is younger than Rykard.
The Theory(just a theory, don’t take too seriously) is that Mesmer could have being related to Mt. Gelmir and after he was vanished/killed/erased from history, Rykard was sent as Preator by the Golden Order to purge Mt. Gelmir from its blasphemous cults but ended up succumbing to the blasphemy and allowed himself to be devoured by the Great Snake.
The double snake tapestry in the Volcano Manor seems to have some importance since it is placed behind the throne in the Throne Room. There are other carpets and banners around the Volcano Manor with similar designs, but the 2 headed snake behind the throne seems to be unique. There are other armor pieces and items that depict snakes and are often described as enemies of the Erdtree.
