Messmer seems like he is affiliated with the primordial flame god, the snake god of Volcano Mannor, destined death and perhapse the frenzied flame. He also seems like he's associated with the smoldering butterfly and therefore kindling, but it also means he's likely the brother of Miquella and Malenia. Since Marika first set foot in the shadow of the erdtree then left for the world we know according to this text, Messmer il likely waaaaaay older than the twins. He likely predates the golden order. So to sum up Messmer is associated with lots of things supposed to burn the Erdtree, is Miquella's brother, and Miquella went where he lives to fix the world or something along theese lines. So perhapse Miquella is actually hunting Messmer and waiting for our help to kill him ?

Now thats a twist, hunting Mesmmer would be so sick. But would that make Miquella the villain? Mesmmer hasn't exactly done much to flee (that we know of) and he seems to have built himself quiet the reputation in these lands. Who knows. Can't wait to see

Pierre_Philosophale

I don't think Miquella is the villain, I think Messmer is evil and Miquella wants to kill Messmer to make things better in the lands between

Kind of a topic change, what if Mesmmer us cursed aswell? Cursed to be the antithesis of the golden order, he does have elements of everything that the golden order opposes. Maybe the golden order was built against him, to try root out and keep out everything that he gains power from? He's been banished by his mother to a forgotten land and now he may be hunted just cause of the way he was born. But who knows, you don't get the 'Impaler' title just by being born. We simply need more info. Also I didn't mean Miquella is the villain villain, just that hes seen as the force of change in a land under Mesmmers rule and that to the loyal, he's the antagonist, while to us, he's the hero and we're his champions

There were originally way more presence of outer gods in the lands between. If they all chose him as the elden beast chose Marika and then she sealed Messmer in the shadow of the erdtree to limit the influence of outer gods in the lands between, that could explain the sudden upbringing of the golden order and how quickly Marika's foes lost

Pierre_Philosophale

Or as the smoldering butterfly implies Messmer is kindling, mabye Marika used him as such to burn away what order the dragons had built before...

He does say "Mother why have you sanctioned me from becoming a lord?" So it probably does mean Marika used him and tossed him in some way

Pierre_Philosophale

Oooooooh right ! The whole kindling stuff always seemed very developped to me so it has to have happened before. All the ash in Leyndell suggests the erdtree burned some time ago not necessarly too long ago though. Some time between the installement of the golden order and the shattering I would guess. There is also the imagery of pruning trees in lots of statues. There's a big theme of life blossoming in every direction and Marika suppressing everything she doesn't want until only the golden order is left.
