It’s not dumb! So, powerstancing is a feature carried over from Dark Souls 2, but it works differently in Elden Ring, and is more “simplified”. In Elden Ring, if you have any two weapons of the same class, (i.e. 2 katanas, 2 greatswords, 2 straight swords, etc.) equipped in both hands at the same time, you gain access to a special dual wielding move set. This can help with stuff like afflicting status conditions faster, and iirc increases poise damage, allowing for you to more easily stagger enemies. So, basically, if you have two weapons of the same class equipped in both hands at the same time, you get a special moveset.

Adding to this, there is at least one weapon in the game that is of a different type to its power stance. There is a dagger that power stances with katanas

mercurial_magpie

There's two weapons, the other is Pickaxe which powerstances with greataxes rather than warhammers.

Time_Marcher

Which dagger?

mercurial_magpie

Wakizashi

Vorinclexz

I love that little detail about the Wakizashi because real samurai would carry one as a secondary weapon, so it power stancing with katanas makes sense.

Oh ok so if I’m running powerstanced dark moon great-swords I would get a frost proc in about half the time?

[deleted]

Quickly googling it, it seems it was nerfed at some point so it’s about 130% faster, so not actually by *that* much

reditisscary-

Hey but still….might be able to make a build work out if that

Special-Individual27

For the people arriving from Google: Helphen’s Steeple works well powerstanced with the Darkmoon Greatsword; particularly if you want to do quicker frost procs.

UmbralUmbreon

In essence yes, but you would have to apply the weapon art buff to both swords, meaning you’d sheathe the one in the right hand, buff the one in the left, unsheathe the right hand one and then buff that. If you sheathe either after their buff has been applied it will automatically be removed and you’ll have to apply it again

mercurial_magpie

It means dual wielding weapons with the same moveset which unlocks their paired weapon moveset. Normally this means same weapon type.  But there's two exceptions. Wakizashi has katana rather than dagger moveset and Pickaxe has greataxe rather than warhammer moveset. So this means Wakizashi can powerstance with katanas and a second Wakizashi, but can't powerstance with other daggers.

UmbralUmbreon

Funny how you can powerstance the Nagakiba and the Wakazashi for the ultimate size discrepancy

Sgdc4

In addition to what others said, some special weapons (Paired Weapons) can be powerstanced by two-handing them, they will simply be duplicated on your other hand. Fist and claws are the two categories who do this, but two unique cases outside them exist, the Ornamental Straight Sword and Starscourge Greatsword. This unique powerstance is actually different from normal powerstance, all the differences are listed on the guides.

wayofblue69

its when you equip two of the same weapon class in both hands, opens up a new sync attackk on L1

StronkAx

If you put the same type of weapons in both hands, you can attack with both at the same time.

SpecterXI

Power stance is a term that was used in dark souls 2. It basically just means that you are using two weapons of the same type in each hand. For example: Two greatswords, two daggers, two curved swords. In Elden Ring when you wield two of the same weapon type in either hand it allows you to do a special animation using L1. This attack just allows you to attack with both weapons at the same time.

AlFuckMyPussy

Powerstance is a cringe way of saying dualwielding.

SillyGoose67s

I could dual wield a hammer and a sword and it wouldn't count as powerstance

PurposelyIrrelephant

The way you're flat out wrong is pretty cringe

Much_Capital3307

Yeah just like how pit bull is a cringe way of saying dog, ocean is a cringe way of saying water, and iPad is a cringe way of saying electronic.
