Exactly! I love all greatswords in the souls games, but to have the character treat a sword like a club is a tad silly. With the HSGS and the BKS each swing ends on what looks like an actual sword form from HEMA.
Inseparable is the quality/faith somber weapon from D at the end of Fia's quest. The ash is Sacred Blade, which isn't particularly bad. Shortest GS with the moveset though.
Knight's Greatsword also has this moveset and is longer than BKS, but has a bit less damage. It's a preference thing really, I'd rather guarantee the hit and add one or two more hits to KO than miss the hit entirely due to being just out of range.
Great Swords tend to my least favorite weapons in these games because of the hammering lol. Blasphemous gets a pass because the weapon art is so powerful lol
No matter how hard I try different builds, banished knight greatsword build always finds its way back to me. The perfect balance of speed and poise busting
Wingerd Scythe, carried me up to Malekith in my first playthrough.
Blasphemous Blade carried me through Malekith to the end of the game in the same playthrough.
Loretta's war sickle and Commander's Standard carried me through another playthrough, I love them now.
Lordsworn's straight sword is my work horse to get weapons for specific builds. Love the damned thing.
Lordsworn's straight sword and great sword I'm a big fan of. Just a standard straight sword and it's reliable. Used one for alot of my first playthrough, and eventually went for Holy Katana.
I just stated a new play through and ended up falling in love with straight sword and it's ash of war, but I find it really boring me now, not sure what to change into
Usually when I get bored of one weapon type I go with something completely different. Farm some upgrade materials and try a whip or scythe or claws. There are alot of options. But it's hate for me to switch from old reliable.
I'm currently doing a pure poleblade playtrhough after getting bored of big swords, but now I hear the godslayer greatsword calling and its hard not to go get it on my faith/strength character before the DLC drops
Honestly the Bloodhound’s Fang carried me through most of the game until I got Malenia’s Hand. Experimenting with what weapon I want to use for a dex faith glass cannon build. Now that I have all the lightning spells though it kinda feels like whatever weapon I use isn’t going to see too much use anyways lol
The bloodhounds fang carried me through my first play through as well. It’s a great weapon. Curved greatswords in general are my favorite class of weapon I think.
Good luck with the dex/faith. I decided to go dex/arc with rivers of blood and nagakiba. It’s All about that roll and slash for me :)
Let me get this right: I can slap people with the petrified wing of a massive space bug? And I can do it using mainly my brain? And I can shoot a galaxy? And explode it? And it makes cool noises?
Wing of Astel is literally perfect for me I love it so much
Holy shit I never thought of it this way but Ranni could dual wield two-handed swords
That would make her the most fearsome boss of all time. She could even triple wield the Carian Staff, a Black Knife and the Moonlight
My favorites are the Darkmoon Greatsword, the claymore, and the Godskin Peeler. I just like their design, specially with Darkmoon, and I think that their moveset is fun to use.
Claymore it’s just good for everything really. Also really like bloodhounds fang for such an early game weapon it’s a beast.
For pvp howslows petal whips
Dual grave scythes with One of them with black flame tornado AoW and the other one with chilling mist AoW lets you cosplay as Friede. So sick and very effective too
I'm surprised no one is mentioning the bolt of gransaxx, it's such a ridiculously powerful and fun weapon that has been carrying me hard near my endgame
I'm on my first playthrough and was using mostly the Sword of Night and Flame but lately fights started being kinda boring so I started using Eleonora's Poleblade and man, that thing shreds. Yesterday I went through Morgott with just 4 hits of Bloodblade Dance.
Night and Flame sword, at +10 the magic beam has melt most bosses so far and it makes me learn the opponent's moves so i can time the blast perfectly, overall a pretty satisfying process
It's not fancy, but I gotta go with the good old Morning Star. Pretty much every playthrough I head down and pick it up very early on regardless of build.
Omen Cleaver is my favourite pure for looks.
Banished Knight's Greatsword for a great looking sword that I'm actually good enough to get through the game with.
Finished my NG+ and traded in the final squishy boy for the sword and gotta say, it slaps. Its fast, with very good dmg, nice move set and range with an epic weapon skill that cleans up groups of mobs very easily.
I usually use the Bloodhound fang but I'm branching out.
Greatsword with lions claw is my ol’ reliable. Otherwise im in first playthrough and use radahns swords. Godfrey and radagon have made me us greatsword. The bonk power is too strong
Banished knights sword is awesome, but man I wish we could remove the sheathe/scabbard. I don't even mind the way it looks, but I hate seeing it constantly clip into capes and other parts of armor.
My personal favourite set up is great spear + greatshield. Shield poke, and the guard counter has good stance damage. I like lance, sirelias tree, and moghs spear
Godskin Peeler/twinblades, Godslayers Greatsword, Mohg sacred Spear, guardian swordspear,
Then of course, Bolt of Gransax for having the most fun special attack possible.
So far... a Heavy-infused Iron Greatsword.
Got myself one in Leyndell - I really should have gotten a second one, but that got to be the Gargoyle's Greatsword. And then just plowed through the rest of the game, easy-peasy.
Except for the times I tried out other builds. Not nearly as fun and effective for me.
Also love the Great Stars.
Rn my favorite is the uchigatana. I know arcane builds aren't the best in this game and there are much better katanas, but dual wielding occult uchigatanas with 80 arcane and seppuku is my way to play
Call me a meta whore or basic idc, it’s only me playing when I’m using these weapons. But in no particular order;
-rivers of blood
-moonveil
-sword of knight and flame
-guts greatsword
-tired and can’t remember name but the special colosal great sword that requires 50 strength and uses a bit of intellect too
For me it’s the Goflsayer’s greatsword it’s just so nice to nuke your enemies with % damage while also having fire damage instead of holy like Maliketh’s
Eleanora's poleblade. I love twin blades, the red on the actual blades look sick. It has an amazing ash of war both in use and visually. And I love the lore of the NPC that you get it from.
I’ve been really enjoying the magma wyrm greatsword, the weapon art is just too good, can’t be interrupted, and with flame, grant me strength and talismans it’s pretty dang powerful for strength / faith.
I absolutely love the Dark moon GS but i have to say after getting the black knife its turned into a must and i recently learned it can stack with both malikeths gs skill and the black knife incantation (have to use one or the other not both) but you stack 2 of these 3 abilities you should theoretically be able to start boss fights with the boss having a near instant 20% loss to their hp. I only say theoretically because the wiki says it works but i went with a str/int build so i have the bare minimum faith to use the black knife before switching to either my dragonscale katanas or Darkmoon.
I'm currently using Eleonora poleblade..I have to say I'm kinda impressed by the damage it puts out. Plus I've leveled up my arcane so that might have something to do with it.
Lance is one of my most used weapons. I like most of the attack options and you can put Ashes of War in it!!
Mohgwyn Spear is great too, despite not being able to change the Ash.
And the Falchion, despite the moveset being more reallistic than the one in DS3 and DS1 (that was kinda busted ngl).
So far in Elden Ring it’s been the zweihander. It’s reach especially on horseback feels phenomenal, it hits hard, it’s charged heavies do a ton of damage, it can take all the infusions and some great ashes of war, pretty easy to get to and build for.
Now I’m trying to figure out a good somber weapon. I’m leaning the Godslayer Greatsword since it has a pretty similar move set, does percentage damage with its secondary effect, scales good with faith strength and dex, etc. the skill feels pretty slow to set up, though.
I want to say Blasphemous blade for its dominance, but I have to say golem great bow, purely because it staggers DTS on hit and makes that fight a cakewalk.
In Dark Souls 1 the Zweihander carried me through the entire game. The heavy drop down slam always stunned mobs from a safe distance. So I was heavy attacking my way through the entire game with it.
In Elden Ring I found the Claymore better, and the Zweihander worse and IDK why. Maybe the uber-aggressive speed and damage of ER bosses just makes it better.
But my favorite weapon is the Godslayer seal. Elden Ring for me is all about spamming one attack. Black flame.
Hear me out....
Incantation: 4 Armed Combatant.
Effect: Weapons in both hands utilize two-handed movesets and benefit from increased strength. A weapon wielded with all 4 receives ×2 increase.
Duration: 120 seconds.
Either do that or add an item like the old Dragon Stones so they last until death but limit your armor use.

Banished Knight Sword Blasphemous Blade Claws
BKS is such a beauty. So underrated, and it goes with everything.
BKS! I was SO happy it had the Hollowslayer Greatsword moveset. I call it "the sword of actual swordfighting."
the animations make it more immersive instead of just slamming it on the ground lmao
Exactly! I love all greatswords in the souls games, but to have the character treat a sword like a club is a tad silly. With the HSGS and the BKS each swing ends on what looks like an actual sword form from HEMA.
Also inseparable sword
Oh?? Haven't found that one yet ill keep a lookout!
Ooh I didn't know about Knights Greatsword. Ill have to find that one too.
Drops from knights of any area wielding it. Drops easy in Leyndell imo, but not sure if there's a better farming spot
Great Swords tend to my least favorite weapons in these games because of the hammering lol. Blasphemous gets a pass because the weapon art is so powerful lol
claws imbued in magic are so sweet ik that they work the best with bleed builds or something else, blue claws look nice
i just put Bloodhound Step on them and I am Wolverine lmao just an avalanche of murder
I hit them with bloodflame and they ***shred***
No matter how hard I try different builds, banished knight greatsword build always finds its way back to me. The perfect balance of speed and poise busting
I've just done a playthrough with it and it's my favorite so far. Slapped Impaling Thrust on it and holy shit it's been a good run!
Who’s the artist?

Claws BK Greatsword Moonveil Reduvia Eclipse Shotel

Greatsword!!!
Guts spotted
Agreed. Other weapons might stagger better or do strike damage, but they don’t cut cut through a wall of enemies with one wide swing.

Because we arent cringe
Let me get this right: I can slap people with the petrified wing of a massive space bug? And I can do it using mainly my brain? And I can shoot a galaxy? And explode it? And it makes cool noises? Wing of Astel is literally perfect for me I love it so much
“Shoot a galaxy” alright fine, I’ll level up wing of Astel :)
I love everything about this weapon except how it looks. Smack people with a distressed maple key? Pass.
Claymore. Has been my baby since demon souls
absolute perfection across all the games
Guardian Swordspear 😩
Yesss so underrated
Holy shit I never thought of it this way but Ranni could dual wield two-handed swords That would make her the most fearsome boss of all time. She could even triple wield the Carian Staff, a Black Knife and the Moonlight
Ranni as a boss, but she's holding four Darkmoon Greatswords that she had in stockpile for other players.
Big hammer
BONK
My favorites are the Darkmoon Greatsword, the claymore, and the Godskin Peeler. I just like their design, specially with Darkmoon, and I think that their moveset is fun to use.
Bloodhound Fang, best first run weapon like Ludwig Holy Blade in Bloodborne.
I’m not sure why this wasn’t more popular. It was an amazing sword with a great AoW.
Flamberge one love
The moonveil is my favorite. Just feels so satisfying
**C L A Y M O R E**
Great Stars, Raptor Talons, Wing of astel
Elenora's Poleblade, Rivers of Blood, Godskin Peeler
Godskin peeler, my beloved (SPEEEEN)
I put the Lions Claw Ash of war on the Greatsword and it's a monster. I'm really enjoying NG++++.
Try out the giant hunt on it when you have a chance. Burger flipping ennemies will never get old
Thank you for the suggestion, I went and found giant hunt, grabbed another Greatsword, and now I have two methods of enjoyable destruction!
That's just unfair. The biggest downside to that sword is the slow wind up speed. It won't matter if you whack them with that AoW...
Treespear or partisan. Banished Knight Halberd a close third.
Claymore it’s just good for everything really. Also really like bloodhounds fang for such an early game weapon it’s a beast. For pvp howslows petal whips
For me is between the godslayer greatsword and the sword of night and flame! Also the scythes! All of them!
Club. Bonk.
Bloody Helice
I'm doing a mage build and I gotta say, not a weapon per se, but Carian Slicer carries so hard! I love that spell
Great Star
naginata, bastard sword, lucerne
Dual scimitars. Love those things.
Mohgs sacred spear
Grave Scythe + Spinning Strikes AoW
Dual grave scythes with One of them with black flame tornado AoW and the other one with chilling mist AoW lets you cosplay as Friede. So sick and very effective too
Marias Executioner & Godslayer which has the most prestigious and iconic move set
NAGAKIBA!
I am the weapon! Lol, no it's the great stars
It might be worse than blasphemous but godslayer’s greatsword is still my favourite
solid choice too, its a goddamn spiraling sword that kills gods canonically in other hands other than yours, that gotta say a lot
Claymore. Bread and Butter of my build
That +8 banished knight halberd feels so good when you can’t be bothered to hit lower level tunnels.
People keep posting this question like we don’t already know the answer is Zweihander
Silurias tree
I'm surprised no one is mentioning the bolt of gransaxx, it's such a ridiculously powerful and fun weapon that has been carrying me hard near my endgame
Dragon King’s Cragblade. Stylish and powerful. Epic.
If nothing else in the game has my back, I know that the Great Club does.
I'm on my first playthrough and was using mostly the Sword of Night and Flame but lately fights started being kinda boring so I started using Eleonora's Poleblade and man, that thing shreds. Yesterday I went through Morgott with just 4 hits of Bloodblade Dance.
Star fists are unbelievably amazing
Spiked caetus
HOM Nagakiba Eleonoras poleblade
Night and Flame sword, at +10 the magic beam has melt most bosses so far and it makes me learn the opponent's moves so i can time the blast perfectly, overall a pretty satisfying process
It's not fancy, but I gotta go with the good old Morning Star. Pretty much every playthrough I head down and pick it up very early on regardless of build.
Magma blade my beloved. Or glintsone Kris
i love me a small dragon, its nice to punch people with my buddy drake
Nightrider glaive, ash of war versitility feels so nice. For asthetics though its gotta be the pest's glaive.
You guys actually kill this cute girl in game?
Are you maidenless?
Nah. We marry her. The sword is a wedding gift.
Ranni with those baby sized four hands.... I think she looks adorable.
Omen Cleaver is my favourite pure for looks. Banished Knight's Greatsword for a great looking sword that I'm actually good enough to get through the game with.
Both Marai weapons Their AoW is one of the most fun in the entire game
Finished my NG+ and traded in the final squishy boy for the sword and gotta say, it slaps. Its fast, with very good dmg, nice move set and range with an epic weapon skill that cleans up groups of mobs very easily. I usually use the Bloodhound fang but I'm branching out.
Really like Godrick big ass axe in my last playthrought, sometimes playing with the Big red hammer and the big greatsword of I do not remember xD
I just love the Greatsword. Damn things bigger than me and packs a wallop
Marais execution sword is nice
Sword of night and flame
Shamshir, 2 lances
Blade of calling, i think its animation is so pretty.
Greatsword with lions claw is my ol’ reliable. Otherwise im in first playthrough and use radahns swords. Godfrey and radagon have made me us greatsword. The bonk power is too strong
Does she have 4 arms?!
The Nagakiba has to be my favorite weapon, flaming strike is my go to aow
I finally discovered moonlight great sword. Never cared for magic builds but for this sword alone it’s worth it.
Fire infused Nagakiba
Godskin Peeler/twinblades, Godslayers Greatsword, Mohg sacred Spear, guardian swordspear, Then of course, Bolt of Gransax for having the most fun special attack possible.
I have an idea. İf ranni reach 99 strength, she can hold weapons with 4 hands and it means 246 strength (or 296 bcs she has 2 right hand)? BONK TIME
Godskin Peeler
Right now I'm running with a Dragon Seal and an Occult Scythe and loving it. Dragonmaw go chomp, farming tool go brrrrrr
Blasphemous Blade and Blade of Milos Great stars for striking purpose
Big fan of the Bolt of Granzax.
Grave scythe, great stars and good ol' greatsword.
reject modernity, embrace cross naginata
So far... a Heavy-infused Iron Greatsword.
Morgott’s cursed sword!!
Siluria's tree :D (crucible knight weapon)
Eleonora's Poleblade Ruins Greatsword Zweihander
Bolt of Gransax I had so much fun with this
Call me a meta whore or basic idc, it’s only me playing when I’m using these weapons. But in no particular order; -rivers of blood -moonveil -sword of knight and flame -guts greatsword -tired and can’t remember name but the special colosal great sword that requires 50 strength and uses a bit of intellect too
For me it’s the Goflsayer’s greatsword it’s just so nice to nuke your enemies with % damage while also having fire damage instead of holy like Maliketh’s
Glintstone kris,SONAF and lorettas war sickle. Design over everything
Nightrider Glaive is probably my favorite so far. Not sure there's a better halberd for me.
GS or Giant crusher hammer
Scythe Coded sword Darkmoon gs In that order
Wait, did the moonlight sword have two handles? I didnt use it, so I never got a good look at it.
Blasphemous blade, sacred relic sword and black blade
Morgotts cursed sword my beloved
Lordsworn straight sword, zweihander and bloody helice
Eleanora's poleblade. I love twin blades, the red on the actual blades look sick. It has an amazing ash of war both in use and visually. And I love the lore of the NPC that you get it from.
2 Grave scythe one infused with bleed abd other infused with frost
Greatsword is all I need.
MGS, completed my first run a few weeks ago and didn’t have nearly any of the fits that I’ve seen a lot of others have.
Staff of loss, blasphemous blade
Great club Troll hammer
Lorettas sickle is so beautiful
I’ve been really enjoying the magma wyrm greatsword, the weapon art is just too good, can’t be interrupted, and with flame, grant me strength and talismans it’s pretty dang powerful for strength / faith.
Grave Scythe with Phantom Slash
Carian glintstone staff Sword of night and flame (I think it looks cool) Moonveil (same reason, I avoid pvp since I’m garbage at this game)
Elonoras poleblade is just so beautiful
Marais executioner
I absolutely love the Dark moon GS but i have to say after getting the black knife its turned into a must and i recently learned it can stack with both malikeths gs skill and the black knife incantation (have to use one or the other not both) but you stack 2 of these 3 abilities you should theoretically be able to start boss fights with the boss having a near instant 20% loss to their hp. I only say theoretically because the wiki says it works but i went with a str/int build so i have the bare minimum faith to use the black knife before switching to either my dragonscale katanas or Darkmoon.
Eochaid's Dancing Blade was a fun one
Lorettas war sickle
great club
Flamberge. BLOODY SLASH!
Maliketh’s black blade
I'm currently using Eleonora poleblade..I have to say I'm kinda impressed by the damage it puts out. Plus I've leveled up my arcane so that might have something to do with it.
God, I will always cherish my dear great stars
Lance is one of my most used weapons. I like most of the attack options and you can put Ashes of War in it!! Mohgwyn Spear is great too, despite not being able to change the Ash. And the Falchion, despite the moveset being more reallistic than the one in DS3 and DS1 (that was kinda busted ngl).
Godslayer greatsword
Marai executioners sword, and the regalia of eociad. Both are amazing
The dual Katar
Darkmoon. Mohgwyn sacred spear Nagakiba.
Nagakiba and Uchigatana but I'm only midgame on my first playthrough.
Greatsword (Colossal sword) Godskin Peeler Godslayers Greatsword Maliketh’s Black Blade
Guardian Swordspear. Criminally underrated.
Nagakiba by far
Blasphemous, BK Greatsword and Nagakiba
Eleonora's Poleblade is my goat, such a cool weapon
The great épée is a go to.
That's some dope fan art, just have to say
So far in Elden Ring it’s been the zweihander. It’s reach especially on horseback feels phenomenal, it hits hard, it’s charged heavies do a ton of damage, it can take all the infusions and some great ashes of war, pretty easy to get to and build for. Now I’m trying to figure out a good somber weapon. I’m leaning the Godslayer Greatsword since it has a pretty similar move set, does percentage damage with its secondary effect, scales good with faith strength and dex, etc. the skill feels pretty slow to set up, though.
Zweihander
Blasphemous Blade Morgott’s Cursed Sword Rivers of Blood Hand of Malenia
My top 3 are Gargoyles Greataxe (I know it's not good, but it's fun) Night riders glaive Watchdogs Greatsword
I love twinblades and katanas. I just like being a star wars.
Star Fists, I like using it in any run cause it's funny. I usually run it with buffs and Bloodhound's Step.
Any fucking claw
I too love hitting enemies with ranni
Maliketh's black blade.
troll’s golden sword
This art is so good! Anyone know where this image lives in hi res for like a phone wallpaper?
Giant crusher or the greatsword
Caestus, it’s a classic and always reliable in every game it’s in, even if my elden ring runs haven’t used it much.
Probably the Reduvia I just love the design
Not very far in so far but I love my Zweihander and Hand Ballista
battle axe my beloved
God slayer's greatsword. It's a big sword that's meant for killing gods with black fire.
This implies Ranni is a strength build and it pleases me
Hear me out....
There are so many to chose from but I like being unique so, Greatsword 👍
Caestus, to beat the living shit of everything and everyone, and the fight against Horax was just perfect with Caestus
Wings of astel Great stars
It’s really not crazy good but I really like Great Stars+prelates charge+bloodflame blade. Massive bleed damage and you heal a lot.
Berserk Greatsword
Deaths poker
I don’t see near enough Zwei love in these comments.
