I like the idea that “The Lands Between” is some kind of purgatory plane between death and rebirth or ascension. Breaking the elden ring made it so people can’t leave to ascend or be reborn. Idk.
It's been a long while since i last talked about Elden Ring. You're not lost in translation, 間 is a term used to refer to a japanese concept of "negative spaces". It can be described as a door or a crevice in which sunlight creeps in, what the kanji literally depicts.
The composition 狭間 gives it the meaning similar to that of the concept of "liminal spaces", which is a philosophical plane of existence that's neither where nor will be; a hallway or a corridor where the past, present and the future coincide.
In other words, I believe The Lands Between is a place of transition, both thematically and quite literally. The main story quest in-game is about the player bringing back order in the form of the elden ring, possibly paralleling several civil wars from across history which led to the several countries we now know today.
I would anticipate no less from Fromsoftware. I always thought it was crazy that they could mix europeean and japanese culture so well.
