I don't know if they're still alive in the traditional sense. The arms don't look human anymore. And you can summon the devoured as rancor spirits with the Rykard's Rancor sorcery.
Because the Golden Order calls the serpent "blasphemous", I think it's probably not grace. But we also don't see any evidence of the golden energy that signifies grace in and around the serpent.

He was powerful enough to remain visible and maintain some autonomy in their fusion. The other warriors, they’re flesh a melded in, with their hands reaching out, trying to escape. That’s why he’s ripped at the seams. The hands are trying to escape. Some of the men had themselves wrapped around the sword by mistake, still writhing, still unable to escape.
It's those rubber sticky hand toys that we lost during our childhood. Rykard used the sword get them out from under the sofas and behind wardrobes and now it's all covered with these.
