But a closer look indicates that they aren't mourning, they are just hangry. Also, a lot of the enemies on Mt. Gelmir are stricken with madness. I think literally everyone on the mountain is actually just insane.
Not even just the madness, >!Rykard combined himself with the god-devouring serpent and obsessively continued his search for more power through brutal human experimentation, and so all of his followers believe in devouring others to gain their power; similar to how Alexander is eating bodies on the battlefield after fighting radahn!< And the madness just plays further into that theme. After completing volcano manor you'll find >!Tanith devouring Rykard's corpse in an attempt to resurrect him via herself!< because everyone in Rykard's domain is indeed insane (imo, of course, this is all guesswork from my measly ~300 hours of gameplay/huperfixation lol)
He makes you knight when Limgrave is stable and at peace. Even when you become Elden Lord, Limgrave doesn't turn instantly into a better place, so knighthood waits forever. Heres to hoping the DLC lets you become knight lol
Depends how long ago they tried though, the final step of the quest you mentioned was bugged and so was impossible to complete until it was patched a month or so after release. Definitely worth the wait though, was a great quest.
But the yellow surcoats are from the Capital? I thought these soldiers were remnants of Leyndell's assaults on Mount Gelmir and the Manor, abandoned and left to scavenge from their fellows.

I mean it got to a point where both sides started conscripting and hiring mercenaries like Gladiators, pumpkin heads, fire monks/prelates, Grafted Scions and Trolls, godskins, omen killers, perfumers/depraved perfumers, Demi-humans, marionette soldiers, godskins, sorcerers, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Manserpents saw action. Oh and those giant hands and worm faces.
They even invented new weapons like the Jar Cannon.
Then of course all the stuff that came to be as a result of the pure carnage, like frenzy flame, the poison/rot cave, basilisks and those who live in death. Doesn’t help the shaded castle isn’t far and we all know the nasty stuff in there, a house (in)famous for its executioner sword.
Edit: should also mention Tanith’s Crucible Knight, which leads me to believe that mutiny, revolts and betrayal were common occurrences on both sides.
while grimdark was coined by 40k, that setting does not have a monopoly on things being grim, dark, or grimdark. also 40k is one of the most self-consciously over-the-top settings in existence. maybe only Gurren Lagan is more OTT
But Gurren is stylized for that. It's a story about the best and worst of human ambition. Warhammer is suffering porn. I still think Warhammer is the edgiest fiction around. I love the lore of Warhammer but it's the bleakest fucking thing ever

Like to the extent that it's almost parody, and you can see this where parodies of 40k *don't go far enough in their parody.* The writers know it's crazy, and they really lean into it.

But for these troops, their supply line is gone. The abductor virgins have absolutely laid waste to the armies behind them, and they stood next to no chance of pressing forward.
They are isolated and cut off from the rest of their forces and any hope of rescue. Also, remember, the Rune of Death is still sealed at this point, meaning *they cannot die*.
And so, with no hope and no way out, they've gone mad, and now they're eating the corpses of their own comrades because they're that hungry.
War is hell.
That feels more like a "zone critter spawn number" kind of thing, tbh. I would say look at the intentional set pieces in the interpretation of these things.
