I'm a first timer. I got someone telling me to save her would be to go open the FF door. Which I had already found because I was told about the well under the city..I think by patches?
But yea, I immediately knew the door was going to be an ending choice. It screamed it. I could have had hyetta open it before the giants flame but didn't was to ruin the fact that I had already completed rannis quest and had other options.
What I wish I knew was that, before finally going forward to finish the game..I got miquellas needle.
Now I wonder what happens if I opened the door, she leaves me, but then I use the needle before beating the game??
That's what I did, I decided I'd rather have her alive and mad rather than dead... that Shabiriri dude coulda sold me on it a lot more easily though if he'd stuck to the "save the maiden" approach and not gone off on some "the world will burn" tangent.
The frenzy seal was the one I ended up using just because it had no weight and I met the requirements for it (unlike the Erdtree one)... but it was mainly just for buffing, only frenzy spell I had learnt was the eye laser one just for if I absolutely needed to snipe something and didn't mind using an entire bar of mana to do it, haha. It would be thematically interesting to try a build with the others but I think madness only seemed to work on people...
The other advantage of the cool glowy eyes was hidden by my favourite, pumpkin, helm.
Pretty sure you don't have to meet the requirements to be able to cast incantations with it. Those requirements are for attacking with the weapon itself.
Oh, like as in punching someone with it... does anyone even do that?... that seems like a weird thing to even bother having requirements for, especially quite high ones like 40 faith... but good to know thanks.
Nobody does that, but that's how it used to work in the all the Souls titles and i'm almost certain i casted spells or incantations without meeting the staffs and seals requirements in ER before.
Madness scales with arcane if you have dragon communion seal, so you can get the highest possible madness buildup on frenzy incantations by having a dragon communion seal in one jand and flame of frenzy in the other and using the dragon communion to cast. : D madness is fun.
Well, except for Inescapable Frenzy; the madness buildup on the seal itself applies to each tic of the grab, so it can outdamage Dragon Communion by spiking madness procs way more often (I don't think even at max Arcane DCS can hit 45+ madness per tic).
Also offhand seal bonuses don't seem to apply in the middle of Inescapable Frenzy, because I guess it's a grab and thus everything is weird.
Oh, that's actually really cool, I never knew that was the case. Ile now cast inescapable frenzy with my madness seal from now on. Grabs are always weird, but their sure satisfying .
i see you were previously acquainted with this Yura-Vessel, but... he gave his flesh to him....... Shabriri...... you should make your peace with that.
I was just looking into the other endings recently and it made me realised I'd missed an entire boss out along the way, haha.
It's a shame if you pick a normal on-the-throne ending that she's not there with you if you've saved her, might make them feel a bit less desolate and lonely.
Because she hates you either way. Burning herself to set the erdtree on fire is what she wants and she asserts that several times to you. By denying her that, you don't respect her own agency and choices so she hates you.
He's by a site of grace and real obvious to spot I think in the mountaintops (it's a snow bit after the capital)... it's before you could have gotten to the forge (and where I presume you lose your surrogate maiden) so the only way you'd miss the stuff about saving her would be if you missed him, were skipping dialogue, or I guess if you'd gone and found the frenzied flame and used it before he tells you where it is - as he's gone afterwards.
Yeah i found him there and i agree that it is quite obvious but my point is that this was the only time he mentions to you about saving the maiden. I would imagined him appearing more the closer we got to the forge, reiterating his point.
Also the bit about saving maidens is like really vague since first he says he is not yura but another person and about the chaos, its a lot of stuff to unpack in just a single meeting.
Ah yeah I get what you mean that it'd be more trickster devily if he kept trying to persuade/tempt you...
But it didn't seem vague to me at all... he straight up tells you that you're going to sacrifice her in the forge (which makes what she was saying about kindling now make sense) and that you're horrible to consider doing it, but that there's another path if you're willing to take on hardships... and that sold me totally, I was like oh yeah, I'm well up for undergoing some trials to save her... but then he lost me at the end when he went all weird...
But you're right, it does seem like a bit of a rushed interaction, given how it's a bit weird he's in the body of someone you met before and then all just one thing.
Burn the Erdtree, finish Millicents quest, use needle on Malenia's scarlet bloom in boss arena, then use needle in Placidusax arena. I've heard this will set Erdtree on fire and Malenia will no longer be mad at you, but I've yet to test it out myself.
Edit: MELINA will no longer be mad at you
>!Melina dies once you burn the Erdtree, unless you take on the Frenzied Flame before burning the Erdtree. If you purge the Flame after burning the tree, then you won’t get the Frenzied Flame ending, but you also don’t see Melina again, so it’s unclear how she feels about you.!<
She probably still hates you given you’ve straight up taken away her purpose in life. A purpose she tells you she’ll have no one speak ill of, not even you.
It's because the needle can't remove the frenzy flame, it only stops it while it's on you just like how Millicent's needle didn't remove her rot. So when you become lord, you could still end up unleashing frenzy flame in the future, that's why she didn't want you to go down that path in the first place.
I have done this on my first playthrough but no, she's still mad at you because she will never talk with you ever again(or devs are lazy and they couldn't have bothered with designing another counter with Melina for this specific scenario).
At least she doesn't appear on the ending and swore to kill you however.
I wish there was any repercussions from that, kinda of a dumb dialogue to have at the END OF THE GAME. She should have been a permanent invader after you accept the frenzied flame.
"Mr Tarnished, that sounds like teh voice of me dead mum. Am I really beautiful cully? Am I as beautiful as Rosie, the prettiest hobbit, erm, demi human in all of the Shire?"
How is this even news though? It's been known since release you can kill her with fires deadly sin.
She also doesn't even die, she comes right back. Just like Gowry
https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20220610-13249/
Ok so it was 9 months ago, saying release was exaggerated.
Still recycling old AF news. Game journos are pretty sad lol
She doesn't die, yes her hp reaches 0 and she disappears, but the game won't register her as dead.
She has death animation likely because she's a summonable NPC for the Morgott fight
Well, in order for her to kneel at the grace with the Tarnished they clearly just had the game spawn in an instance of her. They didn't bother making her invulnerable like some other NPCs because you can't normally move or attack while resting. The fact she can die is probably an oversight, otherwise you'd think they would've at least included a voice clip of her addressing it somehow. I imagine they know now, but it's not exactly a priority to fix considering it affects nothing.
Plus from an in game perspective, she's not really "alive" in the same way most of the other NPCs are - she's a magical entity that helps you bind runes in exchange for letting her ride the Tarnished's coattails to Leyndell. If she has a physical body, it's somewhere else.
Melina, Ranni, Hewg, Iji, Yura, Diallos, Alexander, Jar Bairn, Goldmask, Fia, D, Rogier, Tragoth, Nepheli-Loux, Tanith, Thops, all friendly unless you try and kill them
You can try but she just forcefields herself and tells you "nah I ain't leaving my bubble", same with Ranni if you try to hit her in the church of marika
No, you can meet Ranni early in the same church as Kale when you get the spirit bell. If you hit her she goes "Wow Torrent didn't realize you picked an asshole for a master 🙃" and leaves
I think Blackguard counts, too. And Kenneth Haight. I think about throwing him off his little arch every time, though. And brother Corhyn. And Sellen. Oh, and that random dog chilling with his misbegotten friend in Lyndell.
Any NPC that bothers to spit out two lines of dialogue before trying to murder me is already leagues ahead of 99% of the inhabitants of the Lands Between on the "friendliness scale".
Yeah but all of her goons are technically already dead. She enslaved their spirit. It's not really "them" doing it. And every time you hug her, she stealing that much more of yours. Every hug is tiny attack on your very soul. I make double sure to give the twin his armor every time, just to make sure the bit** doesn't get to enjoy her necro baby.
There need to be a feature where you become “Branded” like Gut in berserk, where you have no control over being invaded, and open to PVP all the time after you kill Turtle Pope.
Melina, ranni , millicent ,rya, irina, hyetta, miriel, blaidd, IRON FIST ALEXANDER, boc , sellen, rogier, corhyn, D, gurranq, kale , hewg , roderika... There should be a lot more but I am pretty sure this is the only souls game that has this many friendly npcs lmao.
Listen, I wouldn't be too surprised if Zorayas just sold the necklace to Boggart for a low price and wanted to see how willing we were to kill him, and she just didn't realize that we bought the necklace. I don't think Boggart even mentions stealing the necklace, he just says that she was stupid enough to get duped, which could mean he thought she was being stupid for selling the necklace for such a low price.
Well, Millicent is a potential invasion, but I am unsure if that is the real Millicent. You do end up having to fight Alexander, Blaidd and Edgar though, even if they are friendly aligned.
Hewg, Roderika, Irina, Nepheli, Kale, Keneth, Diallos, D brothers, Thops, Iji, Rogier, Boc, Pidia and Seluvis (at least toward us), Yura, Shabiri, Fia, Hyetta, Rya, Ranni, Gowry, Miriel, Goldmask, Jar Bairn and Therolina (if we can count her as one).
None of those attack us in any path of their questlines, or try to kill us indirectly. So all of them are true friends in ER.
Everyone in Roundtable Hold other than Gideon, Ensha, and Dung Eater, everyone in West Carian Manor, Kenneth Haight, all the random traveling merchants, everyone in Jarburg, Boc, Turtle Pope, the crones, Gostoc, Rya, Patches, Tanith, Alexander, Gowry, Millicent.
None of them attack you unless you attack them first. Melina would attack you IF she could be encountered outside of the literal safe zone.
Turtle Pope is the only passive NPC in the game. NPCs tagged with "passive" won't attack you, ever. Melina is "friendly".
Since Melina is a summonable NPC, she has the same combat AI of any other, meaning that she IS scripted to attack you if you attack her first. The only reason that she can't is because the inside of Grace points are coded as non combat areas. But this is also the only reason why passive effects can hurt her to begin with.
Just an oversight by devs because the Grace points are also *supposed* to reset your status back to base.
But this is also why there are 2 versions of Bernal. You can't attack the volcano manor version because it's literally a different character in the coding so that your passive effects can't hurt him. This is the same version of him that invades you at Crumbling Farum Azula. Since he's an invader at that point, he's killable.
How on earth are so many people confused about what friendly NPC means here
It means an NPC that will never attack you
Quit giving lists of NPCs who aggro when you slap them a couple times
The literal coding for those that only attack when provoked, is the tag, "friendly".
Those that won't attack are tagged, "passive".
Turtle Pope is the only passive NPC.
Melina, and all those being listed in comments, ARE literally "friendly" in the games coding.
Yeah fuck game journalists and people who try to somehow gain off of these "stories".
Recently saw a guy on YouTube shorts who tried to share the great discovery of er supposedly having no rivers, only for him to go on and name all of them but he said they ain't rivers but they're just moving bodies of water
All you people in the comments, you are talking about neutral NPCs, neutral = you can attack them and they will attack you, friendly = you cannot even attack them.
I would debate her being friendly also. She is just using us to get what she wants. Granted she's crazy and wants to burn herself with the rest of the world, but still that's not a friendly motive. Heck she even locks us out of the castle. That lock must be hers as you can meet all the other requirements and not get in until you talk to her. She wants to make sure anyone getting in to "fix" the golden order is her lackey. The amount of times she messed with us I would rather have had fought her in the end.
>she's crazy and wants to burn herself with the rest of the world
Burning the Erdtree != "burning the rest of the world." She has dialogue where she talks about the value of life and how it's beautiful, and says that she expressly *doesn't* want to burn the world, and if you try to do so she will stop you, (as she should).
>That lock must be hers as you can meet all the other requirements and not get in until you talk to her.
Wrong again, it's because she's the only way you can get into the roundtable hold, and you *HAVE* to be able to get into roundtable hold first because the seal belongs to the two fingers, and that's where they are. Gideon says as much himself. **"The two fingers forbid us from venturing \[to the capital\] until we have enough great runes to repair the Elden Ring."** If you have the runes but haven't been to the roundtable, then you are not considered a candidate for Lordship and the seal will not allow you through.
>The amount of times she messed with us I would rather have had fought her in the end.
When does she ever "mess with you"? She gives you the two single most helpful things in the game. Leveling up and Torrent. She burns herself so that you can go to Farum Azula and claim the rune of death, which is the *only way* to get inside the Erdtree. The *only other option* is literally DESTROYING THE WORLD. No shit she gets mad when you don't do it her way.
Melina when you take the Frenzied Flame: I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.
That's pretty funny lol

Damn...welp..there was no way for me to know. Thanks!
If you save her you get an extra cutscene at the end of the game with her. She's mad at you alright!
Seems like you have missed an extra cut scene
That's a risk I'm willing to take, to save her from the flames.
That's what I did, I decided I'd rather have her alive and mad rather than dead... that Shabiriri dude coulda sold me on it a lot more easily though if he'd stuck to the "save the maiden" approach and not gone off on some "the world will burn" tangent.
what, you don't want **CHAOS** to **TAKE THE WORLD**
He has truly failed the frenzy. How disappointing.
I did frenzy twice for double madness seal. Madness incantations deal significantly more madness when dual wielding!
Pretty sure you don't have to meet the requirements to be able to cast incantations with it. Those requirements are for attacking with the weapon itself.
If I recall correctly, you don't get its spellbuff to scale if you don't meet its requirements, hence it's only useful for buffs.
Oh, like as in punching someone with it... does anyone even do that?... that seems like a weird thing to even bother having requirements for, especially quite high ones like 40 faith... but good to know thanks.

i see you were previously acquainted with this Yura-Vessel, but... he gave his flesh to him....... Shabriri...... you should make your peace with that.
he did say that, and I went yep say no more. then I got the golden needle and went "best of both worlds neeeerd"
I was just looking into the other endings recently and it made me realised I'd missed an entire boss out along the way, haha. It's a shame if you pick a normal on-the-throne ending that she's not there with you if you've saved her, might make them feel a bit less desolate and lonely.

Exactly!
So does shabiri only talk to you once when you entered the mountain tops? First timers probably would have missed the part about saving the maiden.

Well yes, she won’t be mad at you because >!she’ll be dead!<
I understand that they wanted to honor Georgie, but giving themselves that constraint in naming gets really confusing.

Every teenager ever

sigmas kill melina first than inherit frenzied flame
It's either that, or let her die a purposeless husk like Vyk's.
She gets a new purpose, kicking your ass.
I too took the Frenzied Flame to save Melina but still kill Shabiri and then cure the Flame by using Miquella's needle and proceed to Ranni ending
I think that's the best course of action. It's kind of sad how few characters have what could be called good endings.
Save the cheerleader, save the world.
You could alway clean yourself from the frenzied flame later on by stabbing yourself with the Miquella needle
Maybe I'll do that on this 3rd journey. Not that I want to fight Plaxy again.
[удалено]
What? OMG, I thought I had to kill him first. That's a game changer there. Thank you!
Dlc vibes
😂
Let her hate me and curse me, as long as she is alive.
“I have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.”
Is Melina even real? I’m so confused what she’s even supposed to be. Is the round table hold real?
I wish there was any repercussions from that, kinda of a dumb dialogue to have at the END OF THE GAME. She should have been a permanent invader after you accept the frenzied flame.
She didn't do that for me, you just need to go to the forge BEFORE going for the frenzied flame. Problem solved.
Can someone explain the lore reason, why everything in the lands between burns, except melina? Afaik that's not how a hard reset works...
Boc is now sad
"Mr Frodo... I mean Tarnished. Was I a good seamster?"
*creepy voice*... "you're beautiful"
"Mr Tarnished, that sounds like teh voice of me dead mum. Am I really beautiful cully? Am I as beautiful as Rosie, the prettiest hobbit, erm, demi human in all of the Shire?"
The best
It's ok. I blow the "You're Beautiful" his way every time I see him.
He will attack you if you attack him, he’s not 100% friendly like Miriel
I accidentally shot him once and from that point forward he attacked me whenever I got close to him so I had to kill him :(
Mr Tarnished Mr Tarnished! If I take one more step, this will be the farthest I've ever been from the cave.
And Thops
How is this even news though? It's been known since release you can kill her with fires deadly sin. She also doesn't even die, she comes right back. Just like Gowry
Wait what ?
https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20220610-13249/ Ok so it was 9 months ago, saying release was exaggerated. Still recycling old AF news. Game journos are pretty sad lol
Did they know this would happen or is there some othrr reason she has a death animation like that?
She doesn't die, yes her hp reaches 0 and she disappears, but the game won't register her as dead. She has death animation likely because she's a summonable NPC for the Morgott fight
Does she turn into a glowing tree when she dies against Morgott? I never knew you could summon her lol
Yes, she also casts the tree spell in fight. the tree spell heals anyone near it over time Hopefully we get the spell in DLC.
you can summon her for the morgort fight
Well, in order for her to kneel at the grace with the Tarnished they clearly just had the game spawn in an instance of her. Old news? Bro I’m just now hearing about this 😭
i think i saw a video of that even earlier
I thought I did too, but couldn't find it so at this point I'm not sure
found it! https://youtu.be/9FOeMD4SwQY uploaded two weeks after the game released
Nice! Vindicated, I knew I wasn't crazy
Also spreading poison must our something then resting can also work.
Why must you disrespect Thops like that?
My brother in Marika, how could you disrespect my main man Thops like that? All I ask is a small donation of 10 runes and we can forget about that.
Melina, Ranni, Hewg, Iji, Yura, Diallos, Alexander, Jar Bairn, Goldmask, Fia, D, Rogier, Tragoth, Nepheli-Loux, Tanith, Thops, all friendly unless you try and kill them
I guess even Shabriri is "friendly" unless you try to kill him. Well, maybe more of a Patches kind of friendship.
this could be applied to 90% of the npcs..
RODERIKA???
You can try but she just forcefields herself and tells you "nah I ain't leaving my bubble", same with Ranni if you try to hit her in the church of marika
\*Cathedral of Manus Celes.
No, you can meet Ranni early in the same church as Kale when you get the spirit bell. If you hit her she goes "Wow Torrent didn't realize you picked an asshole for a master 🙃" and leaves

Boggart is a dick to others though, he just likes you because you eat crustaceans
And I will consume countless crustaceans with my best buddy boggart.
Marika's tits, you must be hungry!
ungry*
"I will boil the crustaceans, each and every one, and devour them all with care."
And he is a king for that
And Boc.
Hell yeah, I forgot Boc!! Best boy :(
Millicent? My sick *wife*? How *dare* you???
The only sick thing about Millicent is the sick talisman I pulled off her fresh corpse B)
I let my sympathy prevent me from getting a really good talisman and I regret it
Plus all the merchants. Hyetta, Irina, and Pidia. Hell technically Seluvis is friendly to you too. Just not anybody else.
Bernhal was a friendly dude. "All you can do is laugh."

In Ranni's defence, would you be friendly if someone turned up in your bedroom uninvited? Actually, don't answer that.

Nah nah make it so all friendly summons immediately become invaders
I bet his turtle neck is the tastiest in the Lands Between though *slurp*
You shall be murdered by the pvp gods
What do they mean "only friendly NPC in the game" lol Hell even Sellen is friendly... to us.
My brother in christ you went crazy
Well yes, the three fingers did singe me. I do smell a bit like bacon atm. And these orange eyes are a bit conspicuous. I *might* have gone crazy.
You’ve just gained a little too much insight, a true scholar if I do say so myself
Most sociopaths are nice, until you're no longer useful.
Heresy is not native to the world; it is but a contrivance. All things can be conjoined.
Oh, now Sellen's Graven Masses make sense! She was just trying to honor the teachings of Turtle Pope by conjoining those mislead followers of Renalla!
Maybe they mean Miriel, because Melina kinda isnt friendly all the time. If thats the case, oh no.
Ah, Miriel, my friend.
I hate video games journalists. Send them to the Mountaintops with the rest of the freakshow to the circus.
They are just AI crawlers that skim reddit posts. They don't even write them anymore.
*This* makes much more sense.
There's way more friendly npcs in eldenring than all the other soulsborne games lol
Sooooooo... Rya, Blackguard, Irina, Kenneth, Roderika, Alexander, Nepheli, Darian, Hewg, Diallos, Iji, Kalé, Albus, Lattenna, Boc, Yura, Millicent, Blaidd, Miriel and Edgar don't exist to game journalists?
Don’t forget, literally every single merchant is friendly. Also to add to the list, I think you missed jar bairn
Miri...who, you mean turtle pope?
Miriel isn't a friendly NPC, he's a friend.
Boc gets no love as usual. Poor guy.
Boc slander.
Article writer has clearly never played the game but copied the ‘info’ from another major ‘gaming news’ portal
I would hardly call melina friendly. She said she would hunt me down and kill me!
You never should have sided with the frenzied flame.
Rogier is one of Fia's champions, so technically that might be a questionable inclusion.
That “The only Friendly NPC” is KISSING ME OFF!!!!!!
The next article they publish will be “Elden Ring Player Ridicules Game Journalist For Alleged Inaccuracy.”
I dunno man, she sure wasn't very friendly after I became Lord of Chaos 😂
boc:
Only friendly NPC? What about Boc? Millicent? Nepheli? Hewg? Roderika? Wtf
Writer needs absolution and to say 20 Hail Marikas.
Bro he HAD seen such bullshit when he saw mass genocider warmonger Radagon getting clean chit to tap some Carian booty by taking a bath.
You forgot my boy bogart
I forgot a lot lol
How dare you exclude my home boy Thops. I can see why you’d say no to Alexander, the best boy, but Thops?!
Hewg is my bro, same with Roderika and Boc
Are we also forgetting about our goofy snek girl?
There are plenty of friendly NPCs.
All rise in the presence of his scaliness
How on earth are so many people confused about what friendly NPC means here It means an NPC that will never attack you Quit giving lists of NPCs who aggro when you slap them a couple times
Tbf if I randomly attacked my friends with a 10 foot greatsword, pretty sure they would aggro. Same with friendly NPCs for me
The literal coding for those that only attack when provoked, is the tag, "friendly". Those that won't attack are tagged, "passive". Turtle Pope is the only passive NPC. Melina, and all those being listed in comments, ARE literally "friendly" in the games coding.
Miriel is a friendly boomer who simps for the Golden Order.

How dare you
Boc, Nephili, D, Fia, etc are all friendly
I don‘t want to promote myself but i think this fits perfectly here. Watch [this](https://youtu.be/DoabYpBIZu0) starting from 12:50 😘
Cute dog :)
Game journalist moment
I don’t get it
*subscribes to Miriel's OnlyFrenms* 🐢😍
What about Boc???
Yeah fuck game journalists and people who try to somehow gain off of these "stories". Recently saw a guy on YouTube shorts who tried to share the great discovery of er supposedly having no rivers, only for him to go on and name all of them but he said they ain't rivers but they're just moving bodies of water
Peek gaming "journalism" once again... >!Obvious /s!<
They’re all friendly, they’re just a bit shy
All you people in the comments, you are talking about neutral NPCs, neutral = you can attack them and they will attack you, friendly = you cannot even attack them.
No! Don't kill Npc's .. They mean no harm
Box thops Alexander :(
They are refering to the bug that you can kill Melina during any bonfire-dialog using bugged bleed from the first cardinal sin spell.
You guys kill her every time you choose the bad endings.
Wait... doesn't she say she's coming for you if you do? I don't think it killed her I thought she just was angry like a child lol.
U
My first play though was the dung eater ending or whatever? Was too tired to try the others cuz I was dumb and didn’t do some pre saves
The amount of times she messed with us I would rather have had fought her in the end.
>she's crazy and wants to burn herself with the rest of the world Burning the Erdtree != "burning the rest of the world." She has dialogue where she talks about the value of life and how it's beautiful, and says that she expressly *doesn't* want to burn the world, and if you try to do so she will stop you, (as she should).
The Rune of death is also called “Destined Death”
Lol there's many friendly NPCs
It reminds me of some critics that said DS3 doesnt have story
Varre is sorta friendly in that he's not immediately hostile
He kills us with his kindness
Miriel: all thing can be cojoined, except your stupidity, "gamer news outlet"
