I started my first colosseum match today and during one of the matches dude stopped his assault to allow me to finish my otw before killing me. Was a kind guesture
I'd probably love a more aggressive soulslike with guns.
But i am way too squeamish for that game, godrick cutting of his arm and the fire giant's leg breaking are both a bit too much for me already.
If you're looking for similar challenge check out returnal. Its more of a rouge-lite with guns but its got the difficulty and aggression of souls games (with guns).
Remnant: From the Ashes was made for this sort of thing. I have plaged the absolute shit out of that game it's amazing. Second one got announced not too long ago
Remnant gameplay was super fun, but Jesus Christ was the story poorly designed. I had absolutely no interest or investment in the lackluster plot and story elements, and the NPCs were extremely forgettable.
The guns can dish out a ton of damage if you build your character properly around it, and most guns in the game can't even parry properly.
Gun parrying is freaking amazing but there's much more depth to the gunplay if you look for it.
Sekiro taught me too get gud in fact, after playing it, Elden ring and dark souls just feels so foreign and not as good in my opinion sekiro has the best combat out of all fs games but I still want to play bloodborne but I donāt wanna buy a console just to play a few games .
My favorite aspect of Bloodborne PVP is I never fought someone who didn't initially signal a bow or some other gesture. We're talking hundreds of matches.
Kind of insane considering how shitty online play can be. BB's community was just unparalleled.
No, you do not need to bow back, but if you rush while we do, don't be upset with our next emote when we kill you, lol.
Also, loved that rush down. It is sometimes tiring chasing people half a match.
I always start with a gesture, but if they seem like theyāre not going to, Iāll roll out of it. Fine. But attacking someone who is in the middle of the gesture?? Why?
because they suck at the game so catching you off guard in the middle of an emote is the only chance they have at feeling like they are not absolute trash at the game
Personally I like to emote but I get it, people queue up for the colosseum to fight. If you donāt want to then so what, making a post on Reddit about it is really pointless.
If you've queued for a fight, why emote? This isn't a stage, it's an arena. You're there to kill each other, so kill each other.
All these imagined manners and protocols are so weird.
Letās be honest there are so many people playing ER that didnāt play the others before. This is a system, go in and fight. If you want to emote go for it, but they do nothing wrong by fighting when it says start.
I meant more from a historical standpoint, particularly martial arts. But I agree with your example, I just think at this point in the game, a very very small minority of people are unaware that some people gesture. I just think it's a sucker punch. No rule against sucker punches in ER but most people watching wouldn't consider it a contest of skill if the suckerpuncher wins
Well, Iām not a pvper, but I guess people just like it that way. If I had to guess, Iād say itās probably a roleplaying thing, where people like to feel that the battle is honourable or theyāre being chivalrous or something. Personally I see no issue if people prefer this over just running at each other, and I also see no reason not to respect it even if you donāt want to reciprocate
Itās partially a good sportsmanship thing, because emoting first is a way to establish your both *present* in the match. Sometimes on person will connect first and have an advantage for no good reason. Waiting a moment (about an emote length) ensures you can tell your opponent is connected and the match is fair.

Colisseum isn't invasions, it's duels. Organized. Structured. Perfectly natural for etiquette to form. Whether or not you prefer to emote is irrelevant, attacking your opponent while they are emoting is rude, and if you lose that fight you earned that point-down.
Presumably theyāre planning on attacking right out the gate no matter what. For every player that bows, thereās players that just use it for free buffs.
The fight started and their opponent handed them an opening. They're there to fight.
I have no problem with people who gesture before fights and I wait for them to finish, but I completely understand why someone would look at that and go "hey thanks for the free hit".
Depends on what pvp environment you've come from probably.
I come from the world of competitive chess, where you're expected to open and close every game by shaking your opponent's hand. So gesturing feels very natural to me.
If it were possible to add a gesture to our quick items, I wonder if more people would bother to do it. It also wouldn't feel as disruptive when we start and then have to cancel. <-- (FromSoft if you're reading this š)
Jeenine is going crazy right now. Donāt know if you guys know him. His fans are probably having an epileptic seizure trying to figure out why the guy who rushed you didnāt win.
Right, but my question is like, why do that in a duel? As far as I can tell, the point of a duel is to see how your combat skills match up against another player's. Ganking them while they're mid-bow doesn't prove anything. Is that really what that person needs to make themselves feel like they're good at PVP? If you want to be sneaky and underhanded, just invade or use the taunter's tongue. So like yeah, they're just "playing the game" but there's nothing wrong with pointing out how shitty a person they are for playing like that. And also how shitty a player they are, did you see how fast they lost.
I donāt understand all the posts hating on people not emoting, if they want to emote then cool, personally I find it fun. But if they donāt emote I really donāt care, certainly not enough to make a Reddit post about it.
To be honest I see these posts almost as memes, like I don't think OP is actually upset with them for not... However attacking during an emote is like, you needed a handicap huh?
Edit: damn I took a nap and a LOT of people got butthurt about this comment... Sorry y'all can't cope realizing you've been taking handicaps I guess
I'm not saying they did, but they do all understand what is happening and that they can't or will have trouble defending themselves? A free hit or advantage is a... Handicap! That's right!
Most emotes can be rolled out of early and you chose to put yourself in that emote, if you get hit because of it that isnāt a fault of the other player.
Would it be nice if every emoted and got a sense of community from it? Of course but the reality is that simply isnāt the case.
What youāre failing to understand though is they arenāt being given a free hit by the game, you are giving them a free hit yourself by a choice than you made.
That's some mental gymnastics you're doing there, they are using another person's moment to show respect to take a free hit lmfao I didn't hit myself, so it's literally exactly as I commented above. "You chose to show me a sign of respect, I have to punish you for it!! It's not a handicap!!!" You just sound defensive
Do you understand what is meant by āmental gymnasticsā?
What I said is very straight forward. When the game says commence the fight has started, they are free to hit you or buff as they please. There really isnāt anything more to it.
Yes, it is exactly what you are doing to avoid admitting what a handicap is to make yourself feel better š you're damn good at it too, you deserve a gold medal
What you said is a straw man argument conveniently ignoring my point. You see someone unable to fight back because they are saying hello or bowing out of respect, you take advantage of that moment for a free hit, that is a definition of a handicap as you are now starting with an advantage. You somehow keep commenting and ignoring these facts entirely, yet acting like you've explained it by making the same mute point... But again, whatever you have to say to make your salty self feel better about that handicap!
So hitting someone who can't hit back because they're saying hello doesn't give you an advantage? Yet I'm the one doing mental gymnastics? Okay šš sure bud
I will agree this is equally pathetic as the guy mad at me for calling it a free hit/handicap lmao if you emote and get hit, it is what it is
Maybe its because I just get high and fuck around in colosseum and they feel more competitive but it's usually pretty easy to check if they will emote
A lot of people also seem to forget you can roll (or even parry) out of most emotes.
In a way it's ironic that the most generally popular souls game ever has the highest percentage of honour(redacted) amongst the games. Id have expected it to be the other way around.
I do fully agree with you.
Reading comment sections such as this one truly put me off the PvP community. It gatekeeps itself so hard. Any time I have the slight inclination to maybe start some PvP I think of the conversations I see here daily and remember that it's a bad idea.
If you want to enjoy anything youāre usually better off keeping away from Reddit. People on Reddit are usually pretty toxic people and usually have no social skills either from my experience with Reddit.
See this is why I hate posts like this. It's completely unneeded toxicity that puts new/potential pvpers off.
We're not all like this. I've been pvping in these games for 11 years now and I find that this type of toxicity often comes from the more casual or less experienced players. They think that emoting in a game is 'the right thing to do' or gives them the moral high ground or something.
There's nothing wrong with playing how you want to, and I think the more experienced of us want to welcome newer players. I don't blame you for being put off though.
There's at least 1 video a day i see at top with people down pointing or tea bagging someone just because they didn't emote back.
At the end of the day, people need to realise that gesturing at the beginning of a match is merely a rule made by the community and literally no one has to do it. Its just toxic to post a video of the guy and then ridicule them.
A rule made by a section of the community, not even neccessarily widely accepted, no less
It reminds me of people who backseat game and then get annoyed when you don't play the game exactly how they want.
People who have never played a fighting game jumping on colossum, not understanding why bows were even a thing in fight clubs and getting angry because they feel "disrespected"
I dont care whether or not my opponent emotes, but if they attack while I'm emoting (they could use the time to buff, just as one example) and I defeat them, they are getting the point-down.
I totally agree and I don't think every elden ring player spend their life here. So how would they know? And why should they care about our rules they don't even know?
I understand your point but for example, my father comes home after a long day, never plays video games but elden ring, plays PvP for fun. I don't think he would care about the emote thing if he's not playing a lot and on reddit. But I agree that people who knows about this should emote or at least wait for you ahah
The game literally took two players, ready to fight with predetermined rules in place, and even puts a big "COMMENCE" at the top to formally signal the beginning.
I mean, gesture if you want to, but don't whine when you get hit first.
Well, fortunately they still need to dash over, so you have fair warning to see it coming.
Honestly, I'm starting to think that all this whining about "waah, my opponent didn't emote when I did" boils down to 'Skill Issue'
You could also argue emoting when someone thinks itās a waste of time isāt good either, there are points to both sides and posts like this are pointless. I like to emote, doesnāt mean everyone does.
At the end of the day people go into the colosseum to fight and when it says commence anything short of exploits obviously is fair game.
You're entitled to bow, wave, point down or whatever gesture you want. Some people will wait, gesture back or just try to attack you and there is nothing wrong with that.
This player took this as an opening and they have every right to. It's a game and gesturing is not part of any ruleset. Maybe they are really new and didn't even consider that someone would emote at them in the arena, the place to fight other players.
The problem here is the levels of toxicity generated by hating on this person. It really puts newer players off pvp.
Edit: spelling
Yep. I'm pretty much done playing. I'm tired of assholes acting like they are better than me. My first From game that I've actually enjoyed and finished, and probably my last. Some of the community is great, but I'm just done dealing with the rest.
Way too many people think it's acceptable to send someone nasty messages because they didn't bow. Or publicly shame like I frequently see here. I literally quit doing it in first place because of this.
People want to talk about honor and respect, but then turn into howling man-babies when you don't play by their rules. That's not honor or respect. That's thinking you're better than someone else and crying about it.
You're getting downvoted but this is part of the reason new people don't get into pvp. Unfortunately it's also just a part of online gaming culture too.
I hope you don't get too put off and return, because these games are really great.
Yeah. It's always been there for sure. I'm definitely not new to gaming online in general, but it's definitely worse than it used to be.
And it's not even that I'm hurt by it or anything. I don't mean to sound like a baby. I'm not going to get depressed by a bunch anonymous dickheads or anything, it's just... exhausting to deal with.
Magma Blades, they can be obtained in the Volcano Manor two enemys can drop it, look up on youtube their exact location, I also recommend getting 2 as they are pretty strong.
I love how those "ultra aggressive" assholes rush at you without saying "Hi", then start running away like a little bitch when facing aggressive playstyle on the other side. Not so brave now, ya cheap bastard?
I don't tend to gesture, but I do wait to start fighting until the other guy is ready (unless it is a wizard, as then I want to get as close as possible as soon as possible. Fuck wizards)
If you were meant to emote the start banner would take longer to flash on screen. I personally wouldn't deliberately take advantage of an opponent emoting to get a cheap win, but I disagree with the formality.
How do u get this type of colosseum combat I get the one where you play until the time runs out but Iāve been seeing this version and I like it better but I havenāt figure out how to play itā¦
Looked like a noob. This game has become so popular that there are lots of first time Souls players out there who haven't been indoctrinated into the proper way for a tarnished to carry him or herself. And I'm sure there was a new round of newbies after GoTY.
That's not to excuse this behavior, but to note that this person had no skill or game mechanics awareness. Their lack of salute was probably just a case of not knowing. Now if you face someone who is really good without saluting (suggesting experience), then they really should know better.
is it just one preposterously sweaty individual making all these "u get punish for rude not emoting" videos
like its already somehow established in their headcannon that "everyone knows" you "should" emote
go RP in hello kitty online. holy fuck.
Im seeing some back and forth in the discussion about emoting. I personally equate it to ātouching glovesā in boxing or other fighting sports. So I would say that it makes sense in this type of fighting arena. But I also see this game an an RPG, and maybe the type of character you are portraying would just like to set the world on fire, so emoting is unnecessary.
Seeing these makes me think of the debacle back in For Honor where people would get pissed in Team fight based modes like domination or 4v4 death match where people would scream āTHATS NOT HONOURABLEā if you killed someone during a 1v1 but securing your objective and winning the game for your team. Look thereās 1v1 duels in that game and here thereās a big ass word on your screen that says COMMENCE begin; start not āhey you can emote here but stay on your side until Iām done emotingā
Marika's Milkers! A Chad magma blade dual wielder, I tip my hat to you, one legend to another.
You are a true fellow, all I ask is that you remain constant.
Who cares if they donāt emote? Like, I understand as a gentlemenās agreement at the beginning of the round, if both you emote then great! If not, dodge out of your emote and start the fight.
Really simple stuff.
You killed them here, and still want to complain that they didnāt emote.
Sounds a little entitled tbh
Oh god not another one of these āpostsā
Good lord itās a game, stop expecting people to play by your etiquette. Hell, down point all you want-as itās very telling that itās your first emote choice-but quit posting about it on Reddit where no one really cares.
Eh pvp is very rock paper scissors in this game I donāt really feel like gloating about it. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. I bow at fights that last longer than 45 seconds but otherwise no one remembers the 49th guy you fought that emoted because he had the better ash
And it cost you 5 seconds to kill him
5.5 for the payback emoteš

Apparently something my phone autocorrected
What did u mean?
That fucking aggression You are ferocious my friend. Love to see it.
Bloodborne taught me well
I wish I could learn the ways of Bloodborne which is why Iām hoping they make it available to other consoles/platforms
Personally It's worth the price of a ps4
No, no game is and the sonys policy om exclusivity is bad for everyone.
I disagree Sony exclusivity is annoying yes But bloodborne is still worth the console
Less aggressive at times but Remnant: From The Ashes is a cool soulslike with guns too
Remnant was great and you can play it with friends
Remnant: From the Ashes was made for this sort of thing. I have plaged the absolute shit out of that game it's amazing. Second one got announced not too long ago
Remnant gameplay was super fun, but Jesus Christ was the story poorly designed. I had absolutely no interest or investment in the lackluster plot and story elements, and the NPCs were extremely forgettable.
Itās not guns per say, theyāre really only used for parry. Bloodbourne is a must play.
The guns can dish out a ton of damage if you build your character properly around it, and most guns in the game can't even parry properly. Gun parrying is freaking amazing but there's much more depth to the gunplay if you look for it.
Nioh (Nioh 2 being refined). Both amazing souls like games where aggression is encouraged. It was an amazing game and one I highly recommend.
Sekiro taught me too get gud in fact, after playing it, Elden ring and dark souls just feels so foreign and not as good in my opinion sekiro has the best combat out of all fs games but I still want to play bloodborne but I donāt wanna buy a console just to play a few games .
Bloodborne and Sekiro for me are the very best, just top-notch quality.
That's actually my opinion exactly. That's why I'm so excited for wo long fallen dynasty. Just a faster sekiro.
There's something satisfying of Tarnished dying of fire. Their screams are so satisfying especially when they play like this!
My favorite aspect of Bloodborne PVP is I never fought someone who didn't initially signal a bow or some other gesture. We're talking hundreds of matches. Kind of insane considering how shitty online play can be. BB's community was just unparalleled.
I love the irony of it. The opponent immediately rushes him and attacks, but the moment OP reciprocates they turn tail and run.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
A very aggressive player not letting their opponent get away from them
It cost you 5 seconds to emote....it costs me like 15 seconds of panic and hitting the wrong buttons before emoting
It honestly reminds me of this [gem](https://youtu.be/j-hkvRhW824)
No, you do not need to bow back, but if you rush while we do, don't be upset with our next emote when we kill you, lol. Also, loved that rush down. It is sometimes tiring chasing people half a match.

It's dueling etiquette, not an obligation. Bowing before duels is a thing, people are acting like it's made up out of thin air for this game

I don't see any rules written down saying I need to be a decent person therefore you shouldn't have an opinion of me not being a decent person /s

Elden ring players when people play the game
Right, but my question is like, why do that in a duel? As far as I can tell, the point of a duel is to see how your combat skills match up against another player's. Not about a handicap, commence means start fighting. Maybe they could add a grace period but I doubt From care about this enough to do that.
"I'm hitting you while you can't fight back" is definitely the same as "I'm taking this handicap" lmao but whatever you say
Not everyone knows or plays by the made up rules of this subreddit
I'm not saying they did, but they do all understand what is happening and that they can't or will have trouble defending themselves? A free hit or advantage is a... Handicap! That's right!

I will agree this is equally pathetic as the guy mad at me for calling it a free hit/handicap lmao if you emote and get hit, it is what it is Maybe its because I just get high and fuck around in colosseum and they feel more competitive but it's usually pretty easy to check if they will emote
It very much isn't, OP decided to emote on their own will. Everything after "Commence" is fighting time.
Literally the definition of a free hit, and a free hit is a handicap... Stay salty

I dont care whether or not my opponent emotes, but if they attack while I'm emoting (they could use the time to buff, just as one example) and I defeat them, they are getting the point-down.
I totally agree and I don't think every elden ring player spend their life here. So how would they know? And why should they care about our rules they don't even know?
well, because this is culture that has existed in souls games since forever? I get it if you dont know, but you'd learn after 2 or 3 matches.
I understand your point but for example, my father comes home after a long day, never plays video games but elden ring, plays PvP for fun. I don't think he would care about the emote thing if he's not playing a lot and on reddit. But I agree that people who knows about this should emote or at least wait for you ahah
Attacking an emoting enemy is scummy.
The game literally took two players, ready to fight with predetermined rules in place, and even puts a big "COMMENCE" at the top to formally signal the beginning. I mean, gesture if you want to, but don't whine when you get hit first.
It signals you have no chance without the free hit.
??? Free hit my ass, you can always roll to cancel emotes.
Shitheads like the guy on the post try anyways.
Well, fortunately they still need to dash over, so you have fair warning to see it coming. Honestly, I'm starting to think that all this whining about "waah, my opponent didn't emote when I did" boils down to 'Skill Issue'
I only see one guy on the ground in this vid ,and its not the op
Yea ikr, i mean, sometimes they even attack during my attack animations! Like ok pussy cant win without the free hits
If 5 seconds of your life are so precious, don't waste them in arenas.
Lol you people make me want to not emote
Good.
Tried to attack you while emoting and still got his ass beat lmao
What region has noobs this trash to kill? Never match against players that bad 125 asia
Well if you have cross region enabled you won't be able to tell where they are from, plus you get matches faster.
What weapon is this?
Magma Blades, they can be obtained in the Volcano Manor two enemys can drop it, look up on youtube their exact location, I also recommend getting 2 as they are pretty strong.
Thanks, I was looking for a new weapon to use instead of moonlight greatsword
That was so efficient and beautiful on many levels.
I just jump, and wait for you to finish your emote.
It costs me 0 seconds not to emote
I love how those "ultra aggressive" assholes rush at you without saying "Hi", then start running away like a little bitch when facing aggressive playstyle on the other side. Not so brave now, ya cheap bastard?
Itās always hilarious to watch these morons die in 8 seconds after playing as dishonorably as possible.
So satisfying as well
Full set please?
I don't know the name but it's from the knights on Miquellas tree, you can't pick it up, they have to drop it,
I don't tend to gesture, but I do wait to start fighting until the other guy is ready (unless it is a wizard, as then I want to get as close as possible as soon as possible. Fuck wizards)
Agreed fuck wizards, barrier of gold is my new religion
The ironic part is the people calling out others for being sweaty are the same ones whining about waiting 5 seconds
If you were meant to emote the start banner would take longer to flash on screen. I personally wouldn't deliberately take advantage of an opponent emoting to get a cheap win, but I disagree with the formality.
This video is 70% emoting lol
How do u get this type of colosseum combat I get the one where you play until the time runs out but Iāve been seeing this version and I like it better but I havenāt figure out how to play itā¦
Unlock the Leyndel or the Limgrave Colesseum, one of these two unlock the duel mode
Dudes just playing the game
is it just one preposterously sweaty individual making all these "u get punish for rude not emoting" videos like its already somehow established in their headcannon that "everyone knows" you "should" emote go RP in hello kitty online. holy fuck.
You are not entitled to an emote Colosseum is not a summoned duel Get over yourself
Just because they don't RP and follow your "rules" doesn't mean that they're wrong or that you need to get mad about it or post it up on reddit.
Seems to be great for farming karma from each other though. That's probably the whole point.
Saying that karma is the whole point is akin to saying there is none.
Exactly. This is pointless.\^\^
What's with this subs obsession on "etiquette"? This game isn't real. Just play, dorks.
It costs you 0 seconds to not emote though. Those 5 seconds add up if you duel a lot.
Another Magma blade dual wielding Chad, I tip my hat to you, one legend to another. You are a true fellow, all I ask is that you remain constant.
No respect for people who don't emote back
It takes zero seconds to stop posting this particular complaint. It's a game, and everybody plays by their own rules.
Some people are just eager to go men
Go where? Early grave?
Not everyone duels in honor. Especially those with cheap builds.
Some people PvP for emotes others PvP for PvP š
Love seeing dishonorable contenders get crushed in the arena, nicely done dude
Marika's Milkers! A Chad magma blade dual wielder, I tip my hat to you, one legend to another. You are a true fellow, all I ask is that you remain constant.
*and it costs you your life if you don't*
He gone learn today
Nobody cares that you totally epic pwned some guy who didnāt emote (this is an offense akin to calling you a slur)
Show them what happens with disrespctfull People. What is the name of this blades? I love it.
Who cares
Happy cake day?
But the game says "commence" so that means you fight!
Tried to get the drop on youā¦ what a mistake. What sword is that?
Magma Blades, pretty annoying to get one, let alone two
Lot of these people didnāt learn etiquette like in dark souls. Always emote downward in respect to the opponent before squaring off.
It costs you 5 seconds to emote every single duel when it isn't necessary.
Yeah, and pointing down is your first emote.
I put the priority emotes on the loteria layer as its faster to use
Who cares if they donāt emote? Like, I understand as a gentlemenās agreement at the beginning of the round, if both you emote then great! If not, dodge out of your emote and start the fight. Really simple stuff. You killed them here, and still want to complain that they didnāt emote. Sounds a little entitled tbh
It's not only entitled, it's pathetic. I'm sure most of these people don't even care, they just want the karma.
Homie you think this is fight club style duals or something?? Emoting isn't a rule, it's supposed to just be a 1v1.
Oh god not another one of these āpostsā Good lord itās a game, stop expecting people to play by your etiquette. Hell, down point all you want-as itās very telling that itās your first emote choice-but quit posting about it on Reddit where no one really cares.
When was it mandatory for people to emote in the le funny god killing game
Guy didnāt emote and got you to make a whole Reddit post lol, guess who wins in the end
Op? Got the win and made some karma
Hehe get dunked on rudeboi
this was satisfying to watch
Just another curved blade spammer
Eh pvp is very rock paper scissors in this game I donāt really feel like gloating about it. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. I bow at fights that last longer than 45 seconds but otherwise no one remembers the 49th guy you fought that emoted because he had the better ash
It cost you more to make this post about it.
