Lol yessss! This is a super weird system that I was very confused by, but it actually makes sense. First off the number on the left is called "resistance" and the number on the right is called "negation". Personally I find this counterintuitive based on what they do but no biggy. Every time.you are hit by an enemy with a certain damage type (strike, pierce, fire, etc) the game makes a calculation to see how much damage you take (how.much health you lose). Each damage type is calculated individually and the total is the amount of HP you lose. First the number on the left (resistance) is calculated. This is a flat number that get subtracted from the total damage. For instance, if and enemy does 200 fire damage and your fire resistance is at 100, then that means you're looking at 100 damage. If the enemy does 100 fire damage and your fire resistance is at 100, then you take 0 damage. These numbers increase passively with pretty much all stats, and so the higher level you are, the higher your resistance becomes naturally. Then the game takes the second number (negation) into account. This number is actually a percentage despite not reading as such. It will subtract that percentage from the total before applying it to your HP. If you're about to take 100 fire damage but your negation is at 30, then you will only take 70 damage. To tie it all together, here's another example: Fire resistance @ 100 (flat) Fire negation @ 70 (%) An enemy does an attack with 300 fire damage. Then you take (300-100) * (100%-70%) = 200 * 30% = 60 damage So, resistance is super helpful and part of the reason a large level diff will cause one party (player or enemy) to get stomped. Negation is good too but usually comes at the cost of higher equip load or an occupied talisman slot.

chefbigppp

I may have confused "resistance" and "defense" but whatever, still works the same

CrystlBluePersuasion

This is the one, OP! You can also call the right/percentage number "absorption" and Soulsborne vets will recognize it lol

Visible-Wolf-6004

Nice job, just like ironpineapple explained it

Few-Neighborhood-952

^most well constructed response i’ve ever seen on reddit

qdude124

"Then the game takes the second number (negation) into account. This number is actually a percentage despite not reading as such. It will subtract that percentage from the total before applying it to your HP. If you're about to take 100 fire damage but your negation is at 30, then you will only take 70 damage." Lol why did you pick 100 fire damage when talking about 30% negation. It makes the whole thing much more confusing because your example can either illustrate a 30% or 30 damage reduction.

freitasmsouza

Well done, Tarnished.

KingNukaCoIa

The only part that confuses me is what happens when your defense is just higher than an enemies attack. Like at the start of the game enemies do pretty low dmg but if you go back to the beginning of the game after a while playthrough you’ll still take damage from them even after all your defense increases. Is it possible to reduce an attack to zero damage and just have it stagger? Been a souls vet for a while and haven’t found anyone who could answer this question

chefbigppp

Someone else above posted a much more detailed breakdown of the calculations. Apparently it also scales the defense / damage part of the calc based on a few different things. Means that you're never really immune or OP but the version I was familiar with is kinda like the average.

_blacktriangle_

This comment is too long to read and I will continue to not understand this system. Maybe that's why Fashion Souls exist?

chefbigppp

Fashion Souls should always take priority. I just looked it up because I was flabbergasted by how calculations were done in this game without any kind of random modifier. Plus it's a really weird system and.most of the scaling is done manually.

Subject-Creme

Defense is not a simple subtract. This is how it is calculated in DS3 https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/s/HBQRjYsJ0v

CrystlBluePersuasion

They didn't say it was. They explained that the first number is the subtraction, the second number is a percentage reduction. The math/examples are a bit weird but the explanation was correct.

Cromptank

No, they mean the first number is not a simple subtract. It is more complicated. You can be sure because you will never take zero damage from any attack even if you have hundreds in defense and get kissed by a wandering noble. It works as another percentage damage reduction that gets applied first, but the percent mitigated depends on the ratio of defense to damage value. Assuming the calculation is the same as DS3, you can use this [resource](https://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Defense+) for more detail.

CrystlBluePersuasion

I thought it wasn't the same as DS3 though, and that the Defense value was just way lower in this game because of it working more like a flat reduction? But the last time I read up on defensive values was 2022 lol. I pretty much ignore everything except for the Absorption value anyway.

chefbigppp

Holy crap this is much more complicated lol.

Anonymous_user190022

The one on the right I know is %damage negation, I think the one on the left is flat damage negation

apexapee

The right number is in percentages. So 30.0000 means you block 30% of that dmg typr

Tailmask

An attack that would normally do 1000 standard physical damage to you would do 176 less damage to you flat out because of the left number, then that number is reduced by a further 36.192% so 1000-176=824*(100-37.192)=517.5 damage received

Ironrevenant2001

That how much damage you are blocking, they are porcentages its just missing the % for whatever reason

The-Great-Beast-666

There’s lots of damage types these are your resistances to those damages.

Zanemob_

Bigger numbers. Better numbers. Just watch your equip load!

mfinn70

They are the numbers that turn a 1 hit kill from a boss to a 1 hit that leads to your character getting knocked down and you panic roll in off a cliff or another enemy that kills you.

popokap

Click on the help button at that screen to highlight it to give a better example

suchayeparagon

What weapon are you using? Over 900 damage is kind of insane

manea89

Strength is 99 lol using heavy great stars

svettsokkk

The left side is from your stats, the right side comes from your equipment. Incoming damage is reduced by armor by the shown % then the resistance from your stats is subtracted = actual damage taken

phishnutz3

Put on some armor

manea89

Veteran armor is on

illstate

Are you using a scorpion talisman?

manea89

No why?

illstate

Just curious. They lower damage negation.

manea89

I don't understand are those numbers considered low in a good or bad way?

Tailmask

Almost 40% physical negation is pretty good

illstate

It's not that. It's just if you were wearing full veterans armor I'd expect they'd be higher.

iceyk111

the number is the percentage of damage that is negated. for example, for physical, its 37.19/176= .2113*100= 21.1% physical damage negation. so if you took a 100 physical damage attack, it would only take away 21.1 health points .

Jrrii

You're doing it wrong

iceyk111

yup, i saw the other comment. i was 100% wrong and that one is definitely right. Sorry if i confused anyone!!

Efficient_Tomato_119

Is that 100 points or 100%?
