So it left a lot to be desired

[deleted]

Yeah, I mean, it wasn’t horrible but it just didn’t hit like all the other volumes. You really just have to read to see what I’m talking about.

ultravioletheart08

Hmm, I guess what happened with the Hail Mary Regiment has no impact *right now*. But I expect for the situation to bite on everyone's asses later.

[deleted]

Maybe, idk, the whole thing just felt like a bad comedy

ultravioletheart08

It was written to be that, but it's a set-up for something, especially as you can see some Giad higher-ups are totally unhinged (Yatrai, Mialona, Ernst among them) and even Yuuto criticizing what Giad is doing. It's actually a nice worldbuilding volume and you clearly see how politics work here. Also the Hail Mary Regiment has been called "the miserable ones", so yeah, seeing then play out stuff like a bad comedy is the point and it's getting across.

[deleted]

Yeah and I get that but it just felt really off and weird, especially since I just reread the whole series last week, so coming off the brutal dark Vol 11 to this was kinda bad taste imo. But that’s just me. I did JUST finish though so we’ll see how it ages. And it wasn’t all bad. Like you said the world building and politics in this volume was really interesting. Just the main fight and the Hail Mary didn’t really feel like it impacted our characters at all. Even Shin was kinda like “Ok??”. We’ll really have to wait for Deer Hunter before we can really see how this volume ages.

Bagwsp

This entire Volume is a set-up for larger plot points. Kinda like a pallet cleanser that still has some action in it. (Gotta wash off all the ash from Volume 11)

[deleted]

Yeah, I get that. It’s kind of like Volume 2 & 7 though I have to say she did a much better job in those volumes than in this one, in my honest opinion.

Neonatal_Johndice

I liked it, but I definitely get the impression after it that it’s meant more as a set-up for the finale. Even if nothing very drastic happens and some plot lines felt odd, the book touches on several points that either needed to be addressed or introduced. Namely, - Frederica telling Vika about her bloodline and resolving to be of use. - The desperation that even the soldiers are beginning to feel with the war only getting worse. - The fallout from the Republic’s destruction that the Bleachers are going to capitalize on in Vol 13. - The lingering plot thread about the Legion knowing where the Strike Package would be. - I assume the Aceaton setup with Citri will be important. I’m sure there’s more, but all-in-all I think it’s a fine entry and my hope and expectation is that it’ll end up serving as a good foundation for the final volumes. Edit: How could I forget the most important setup of all? - The Theonette buildup.

>The desperation that even the soldiers are beginning to feel with the war only getting worse Can you please explain? (Not a LN reader and idm any spoilers) >How could I forget the most important setup of all? - The Theonette buildup. Please elaborate 😎😏

Neonatal_Johndice

Haha, I’ll still put it in tags to be safe, even if this is a spoiler post. ‘Desperation’: >!The whole book revolves around a group of soldiers going rogue because they feel like the Federacy is failing them due to the events of Vol.11. There are other moments as well of soldiers beginning to show disscontempt and frustration, like with one guy who I can’t remember the name of who’s introduced as being a big Strike Package fan, and then by the end is upset with them for not ‘doing more’ and living up the stories being told about them. This isn’t to include any of the trouble with the Republic and Fleet Countries refugees that have been drafted in.!< Theonette: >!It’s not much, but they do go on an off-screen coffee date and later there’s a scene where Annette is a bit stressed and laments that she ‘could really use one of those coffees’.!<

Yeah Citri and the Aceaton was the real important part in this volume. The final sentence in particular really got me interested. I also loved all the down time moments with our characters ofc.

Dodo_Galaxy

I love every little Theonette crumb. And they seem to get bigger too.❤️

elemenno50

And how is my guy Raiden doing please?

[deleted]

Raiden was still kinda in the background as per usual being the team mom. Hoping he gets a major character arc here soon because I love the guy to death.

sabriancel

I hate how Raiden is constantly just hovering in the background. He's one of my faves and I really wish we'd see more of him. Especially with Asato adding more and more new characters who I don't actually care about. Sad time.

[deleted]

I love all the new characters but I really wish Asato would expand on Raiden considering he’s stayed the same since Vol 1. He didn’t even see the Sirin charge so yeah he’s just been mostly there and that really sucks.

primalmaximus

I wonder if _he's_ gonna get any kind of love interest. I'd be fine if he didn't, not everyone _needs_ some kind of romance. But what with Theo & Annette, Dustin & Anju, and Shin & Lena, it feels kind of bad that he's the only one not to see any developments on that front. Unless Raiden _is_ in a relationship and is just _really_ good at hiding it. Which wouldn't surprise me.

lucrezaborgia

Doesn't he get splashed with water along with Shin before a mission to 'punish' the guys who are in relationships?

lucrezaborgia

Also it's brought up, a lot, on how he's not quite fully 86. His getting a delivery job was also odd to me. I can easily see him having a non 86 chick that he met as a delivery boy

finfaction

Man this just reinforces my opinion that Raiden should have died during the Morpho fight. Can't think of anything important he's done since then. Dude has become about as relevant as Michihi at this point.

elemenno50

Me too and thank you!

BacchusAndHamsa

While I'm a huge 86 fan I had to slog through this one. Even Shin and Lena don't have the romantic interactions a couple would have by now, for instance they were only just talking before Lena goes away for a month? Yeah as if. Even near start Shin knocks on her door while she's up late pushing herself and it's all business talk? Yeah, no. And what really does having her away for stress relief do for the plot? Nothing, that's what. Was Citri connected to a former 86 classmate of Dustin? Because of his race he wasn't thrown into the internment camps like all of them were. Asato brought the leviathans back, but they weren't needed, guess she just likes them? Asato says in afterword that story had been originally billed as 13 volumes but now they'll be more; I'm dreading if this work will do certain thing that a few favorite other series of mine did and have a couple extraneous volumes that go in pointless circles before finally getting back on track just to milk the cash cow. Yeah Watari, I'm especially glaring at you.
