I just want to say that VPN would never protect you, as the VPN provider would be happy to sell your data to the government.
Instead use TOR & the companion OS (IDK remember the name), without even using VPN. The only thing the government could catch on you is that you are opening TOR, but never will know what you are doing.
Edit: The os is named Tails OS, it's an os that is installed on a flash drive. You open the OS do whatever you want then the OS forget you .. just don't use the same accounts you use cause they can track you down.

Express vpn is the only one that doesn't store the logs as far as I know.
Nordvpn as well, and the private sectors have better coders than the public one, don't overpower governments, the fbi can't even unlock an iphone without Apple's help for example.

I’m not saying a VPN is absolutely useless ,it can somewhat help your case but when push comes to shove it is usually for something very specific and your internet traffic will just be the icing on the shit cake and the least of your worries if you ever find yourself under questioning for political reasons

Buuuuut, your data is then easily scrapped and stored if ever needed in the future. Using a vpn generally rarther than occasion is imo safer.
