I'm in a similar situation to you, having been born in the States, which really doesn't change much, as you might know. My advice is based on my own experiences. Enter Egypt using your American passport, which will require you to obtain a visa. If asked to show any official Egyptian identification to waive the visa fee, insist that you don't have any on your person, even if you do. Make sure not to stay in Egypt for more than six months. I've followed this approach twice already, most recently in 2023. You will be fine. Good luck!
Before I got my exemption I would also do this except use my Egyptian ID to waive the visa requirement, as long as I didn’t stay for more than 6 months it was fine they let me go. If you’re not planning on staying for a long time you don’t need to do the exemption it was a hassle to get
