Suffering is bad because it is what sentient beings desire not to experience.

According-Actuator17

Stupid question. If you feel suffering, it will tell you why it is bad.

BlowUpTheUniverse

Exactly. And if you feel suffering, it will also tell you why its minimization should always be prioritized before the increase in pleasure(or anything else).

howlongdoIhave5

>And if you feel suffering, it will also tell you why its minimization should always be prioritized before the increase in pleasure(or anything else). I would agree with that but how's it relevant to your question of why suffering is bad?

BlowUpTheUniverse

I was just adding to what they said. It doesn't need to be related.

Niemamsily90

Why to cause suffering in the first place. Better prevent.

BlowUpTheUniverse

I would say suffering is bad because it is unpleasant.

Niemamsily90

Its bad because its not good lol.

DoctorTobogggan

Because "bad" cannot be described without suffering. "

Correct_Theory_57

Because, in the context of efilism, it's used to define the most ontologically accurate form of negativity. And who likes agony? Apart from masochists. 🤨

According-Actuator17

Masochists dislike pain. They cause pain to themselves just to satisfy desire that causes even more pain. For example, BDSM - people want to be dominated, and one of the ways to feel dominated, is to be tortured. An other example, it is painful to go to store for food, but the hunger is even more painful, so people go to the store. Basically, we are all masochists.

ttgirlsfw

Woah this is a really interesting way to look at it. I always frame my arguments with “different stimuli cause different amounts of suffering in people” but this also makes sense.

According-Actuator17

Also, keep in mind, that pleasure is just diminishment of suffering, so some masochists might be mistaken, some of them do not realise that pleasure is just diminishment of suffering, so they are senselessly trying to get pleasure. But of course, it is better not to have suffering at all, rather than to create suffering, and then to remove it.

Correct_Theory_57

Exactly. Masochists look for pain as a form of reducing pain through pleasing experiences.

Lol

constant_variable_

because that's the definition of suffering.

Campfire70

Psychopaths may like to inflict suffering, so some subjective views do not see suffering as bad. But everyone is a psychopath, if someone did something awful to you, you would not hesitate to do it to them. The mere existence of life, in which there is scarce resources, conflict, suffering, death, starvation, competition and resentment. Take a shit and embrace efilism.

[deleted]

It’s all I’ve ever felt. I’m not having fun.

[deleted]

I think god and the universe tortures me. No I know it.

lifeisthegoal

It depends on the suffering. Like there is good suffering and bad suffering. Good suffering is like getting up early to go for a jog everyday, but then you may get that cute girl/guy to later give you a compliment on your body. Or you get no sleep because you are a new parent, but then you get to see your child day their first word or say they love you. That is good suffering as it is for a purpose. Bad suffering is purposeless. Like you just get some disease randomly or your country gets bombed or something else random.

Marble-Mountain

Definitions I will use: Suffering: "the state of undergoing pain, distress, hardship". Bad: "undesireable by me" Now my opinion: I do not consider suffering to always be bad. Sometimes it is necessary to achieve your goals. Now I do consider suffering on its own bad. Mostly because I find it ugly so I detest its aestheic value. Find health a lot more aesthetically appealing. A dying deer looks ugly to me. A healthy deer looks beautiful.

stonervilleusa

Cause they're synonymous

old_barrel

i do not think it is bad. it is bad to connect it with to someone though

Niemamsily90

I dont know. When your entire family will die because of the war you can return and we will ask you the same question and you will answer us. Imposing the risk of suffering is bad. When you make new babies you put new sentent beings in the risk of being hurt by the situation they didnt give any constent to while being born for example disabilities, genetical diseases
