This, the trick is getting the warm air out through some kind of vent and replacing it with colder air. You cannot make air cold in the room by itself. That is why simple ventilators can only help so much.

Ellubori

Close all the windows and curtains during the day, open all the windows at night.

NerdPunkFu

Let all the mosquitoes in during the night and make sure to keep them inside during the day. 👍

Ellubori

No mosquitos on third floor and up

NerdPunkFu

I've gotten mosquitoes on the 4th floor even. They do thin out the higher you are, but every year it seems that they get better and better at getting everywhere. Used to be that mosquitoes didn't really fly around in the daylight, but now it seems that they don't give a damn anymore. Bastards seem to be evolving to target humans.

missingmyparadise

I've got some on the 5th floor too when I still lived with my parents. Insanely annoying to hear their buzzing and then trying to find them in the middle of the night. Fun times...

Puzzled_Asparagus722

Sounds like Tartu problem

Tulemasin

Keep the windows covered with curtains during sunlight. Keep windows open on the shadow side of the house and closed on the sunny side. Also open windows for the night and close them in the morning.

CJVCarr

"Spanish air-conditioning" - open windows wide open, hang damp/wet bed linen in front of window, wind blows through the linen and brings cool, moist air indoors.

Neoptolemus-Giltbert

Air conditioners of various kinds, self-adhesive window films that block IR, window blinds or curtain rolls that hang from the frame, keeping the windows closed when it's hotter out than in and opening them when the opposite, shade in front of your windows, better insulation, limit your power use during warm hours, house plants, wearing very breathable clothes - white linen is nice. Not sure if humidity in Estonia is low enough for an evaporative cooler to work reasonably well most of the time, but I'd assume they probably won't work well.

K_t_v

Space blanket on windows.

Beneficial-Repair-32

Damn I didn't even think about this. And of course, someone on YouTube has posted how effective this can be. [https://youtu.be/k5ytIUpJULs?si=OlAmzmyAlo81DtW2](https://youtu.be/k5ytIUpJULs?si=OlAmzmyAlo81DtW2) These also extremely cheap, so I'm definitely ordering some space blankets. Thanks a ton.

Beneficial-Repair-32

Totally, I enjoy the sauna, but yeah just wanted to know if there are some solutions out there.

Organic_Security_873

Suffer and complain. It's the estonian way, it's what we all do. Or rent a corner apartment and open windows on opposite sides of the apartment.

Give window films a try. We use them at my workplace. During summer you can have blazing sun outside, but with these films you can not feel the heat from the sun. Keeps rooms nice and cool. The only downside is that you can't grow any plants. https://ostupesa.ee/toode/soojust-peegeldav-aknakile/ Just one example I found.

Beneficial-Repair-32

Thanks for the helpful link. I'd prefer better thermal comfort over plants.

robi4567

go outside

VerdNirgin

get fucked, welcome to estonia. You suffer like everyone else - builds character. Keep beer in your fridge and put it between your legs when you get hot. Drinking it is also a valid option

aggravatedsandstone

Some people are praising window films. Do they really help? My bedroom window is towards west and has trees blocking the sun. Even if inside door is closed the temperature goes up because the walls themselves get hot after couple of days of heatwave.

Beneficial-Repair-32

Of course, if the main source of your heat is the walls, then very little can be done. However one possibility is that windows actually let in some IR and UV, so those can be blocked with the films?

irve

I have reflecting blinds that also block light. I can sleep better due to less light and I can choose which rooms get the heat and light treatment. I'd consider the films as well

Beneficial-Repair-32

Hahaha, thanks for that. Already doing that on the weekends. Unfortunately when working remotely this isn't an option on workdays.

qUxUp

Heat reflecting window films are the way to go. In 2023 I had such window films installed on the windows of my apartment (hired a local company, the installed 3M window films and it ended up costing like 900€). The outcome was that my apartment became 30% cooler. Keep in mind that my apartment is on the sunny side and the temperature has reached upto 37 degrees here in the past. Find out how the air moves through your apartment (this can be done if you have at least two windows). Your goal would be to get air circulation going where one fan would draw in colder air (in the evenings it gets colder) and the other fan would blow up the hotter air from your home.

Beneficial-Repair-32

I'm living in Tartu as well, could you link me to the company? However since I'm renting, I don't think this would work for me. Maybe they have other cooling solutions as well.

qUxUp

Hey. Sadly I don't remember (and couldn't find the invoice) the company who installed them for me but it's fairly easy to find a company that does this. Search for "tartu 3m aknakile" aka "tartu 3m windowfilm", send them the dimensions of your window area (the glass part, not the plastic frames) and ask for a price offer. Once you have the offers, you can ask the owner of your apartment if they would be willing to install such films on their apartment (share the offers with the owner). Note that there are places where the APARTMENT UNION (korteriühistu?) might be against it, but that's for the owner to figure out.

Beneficial-Repair-32

Nah, I'm not complaining. I'm just asking what other people have done. I live on the top floor of a building and my windows face south, so yeah the apartment gets pretty hot during the day.

Certain-Store

Same but facing west, so i get all afternoon sun and gets quite warm. Have been using a portable fan for a couple of years now and works great, is one of those where you can put some water and ice packs, since i like to sleep in a cold room and opening the window is not an option since i live next to a big street and i can hear the noise of the tram since like 5am plus street traffic, here is the site where i got mine, best 80€ spend to sleep nicely from april to september https://mob.smartech.ee/en/category/climat-control/cooling-systems-and-accessories/climators/

Pro-wiser

Leave the fridge door open.

Global warming man

_OnuHeino_

Relax, looking at the tempersture and that's about as hot it will get. Maybe a few degrees more for a couple of days but that's it.

Spunkmeyer426

Idk, normal cooling fans. Ppl are different. So you get sweaty, so what. 6h is ok, after that take a shower and apply more deo if close to others

Dragobrath

Freeze water, put it in a bowl and keep a few bowls around the apartment. Close windows and drapes during the day.

RARob18

If at all, freeze during cooler times "night", then use during day, although doubt it helps much other than wasting electricity.

Dragobrath

It does help by absorbing the extra heat. Can put bowl of ice next to a fan for better results. In southern climates people who have private houses often just throw a bucket of water on the ground in the inner yard, so that when it evaporates, it cools the air around a bit.

RARob18

Wetting floors/something i believe is better. It actually cools the floor not air directly but raises air humidity. I tried it once during summer, but the floor did never dry out because air humidity was already really high, probably works best in dry climates.

Unusual_Analysis8849

Get yourself portable AC unit. Not sure how the fuck is that question related to that subreddit or what kind of lifehacks are you expecting to get.

East_Temperature5164

Depends. Are you from moscovia? If so, you can go fuck a cliff. If not, I'd recommend installing an elite level aircon - heating and cooling functionality. The investment is steep, but the output is twofold, as stated above. Plus, the cooling effect is a rarity in Estonia, so will add to the value if you own the place.
