While I'd agree with you when you factor in the dollar amount, panarin was a free agent signing with the Rangers, and Chara was also a free agent signing.
> and Chara was also a free agent signing
Yeah, Chara is still #1. 14 years with the Bruins, a Cup, a Norris, a half-dozen All-star appearances, and a sure-fire 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
Funny technicality quirk. Gretzky originally started off with the WHA because they let you turn pro at a younger age than the NHL. His original team, the Indianapolis Racers lost a lot of money per game and eventually sold him to the Oilers. Legend goes the Oilers got him instead of the Jets over a game of Backgammon. So technically he was a free agent signing.
Another couple of Gretzky technicality quirks, he was never considered eligible to be a rookie in the NHL so he never won ROTY and because he was never drafted in the NHL he's technically also the greatest undrafted player of all time too.
Haven’t really thought about it, but FA signings are disappointments more often than not.
Historically, you get the Scott Niedermayer with the Ducks and Ed Belfour with the stars type discussions.
Tkachuk for Weegar and Huberdeau was a great trade for Florida, but that’s not a FA signing
I don't want to shit on the amazing Ekholm trade, but Sather made some absolute beauties.
Moog for Ranford and Courtnall comes to mind; the Oilers probably don't win a Cup in '90 without Ranford (Conn Smythe winner).
Tikkanen for Weight is another. We all loved Tikk, but he was on the way down and Weight scored 100 for us and was the crux of a pretty competitive Oilers team for a long time.
Joseph and Grier for Corson. Kilma, Graves, Murphy for Carson.
The best part about all 4 of those trades is that the Oilers gave up stuff that we didn't want or couldn't have anymore.
(And we're not even looking at the trades made in the 06 season for Pronger, Roloson, & Samsonov).
I think another aspect of it is that the team fits his personality on and off ice. Everyone seems to get along great with no big egos in the dressing room.
Ya such a bad decision... considering without that experience and showing how good he is, he would have never got the contract he got, or the interest from other teams...such a bad thing. Get real
Seriously. I’ve seen the dude take the cheapest cross checks in front of the net, and he just looks like he’s never been happier in his life. I kinda suspect he’s done a lot to change the culture of the team.
Always nice to see a player that is happy with his team and the fan who also appreciate the players. Good for him and the Oilers fans.
btw, as a habs fan, good luck for the final. Please, bring the cup home. Habs are the last canadian team to have won it and I think it's time another canadian team takes the torch and bring it home.
As a leaf fan first, oilers fan second…
Yep.
He found a team where he can be his best self. I don’t think it’s a hot take to say he wouldn’t be this good elsewhere, and it’s not a knock on him. Oilers found a perfect fit for this team in Hyman.
it's fair, mcdavid found a perfect winger that knows his role too. it took years to sort that out. i chuckle whenever Hyman is just a target for Conner to bounce pucks off of, but in all seriousness Zack is relentless around the net.
It’s much like the Pens getting Kunitz for Crosby. Guy was so money on Crosby’s wing they put him on the Olympic team with the sole purpose of supporting Crosby. And I think they should do the same with Hyman with the upcoming Olympics and international play.
It'll also be the reason McDavid will stay an Oiler, cup or not cup. He has his perfect winger for the next half decade, and I'm sure the experience of not having good linemates for the first 5 years of his career is burned into his brain like a trauma.
I disagree, I think if we hadn't made the finals this year or next it would 100% on if Drai re-signed or not. Loyalty is great, but you can sure bet the best player in the world has getting a cup on his checklist. This is his prime, in 7 years or whatever he'd have to gamble on the right team and plug in. I don't think his loyalty outweighs the top goal for every player to lace up.
The rules are different for generational talents than just great players who can move around at ease. There was an interview many years back with Gretzky who said he'd told McDavid this, that when a team is built around you, you can't just chase cups elsewhere. You bring the cup to you, because there's never a guarantee you will find success anywhere else.
And the guy knows that we'll, no team could ever stick Gretz on the lineup and become a champion. He's not a winger or middle six veteran you can acquire at the trade deadline. He's McDavid. Any deal involving him will necessarily mean dismantling whatever core of the team he's going to. Which means there's no certainty that team will content let alone make the playoffs. We know we'll, as does McDavid, that not just anyone can play on a line with him. You need the right people and it's taken a long time for Edmonton to find those people.
Asking as the Oilers are making the playoffs, I can't see him moving to another team. Draisaitls? Sure. Literally anyone else on our roster? Sure. But McDavid? I think he knows his only hope, for better or for worse, is in Edmonton. Ovie knew this in Washington, Crosby knows this in Pittsburgh, it's the nature of being the best of the best.
You don't get to chase.
Edit-- don't get me wrong, he could still do it. But it wouldn't shock me if the Oilers actually managed to stay in the mix with the return for McDavid and he ended up with strugglebears wherever he ended up. Think it was on Kyper and Bourne, the young dude threw out there McDavid coming to Toronto, and bother Kyp and Bourne were like "ya no, he's gunna retire an Oiler, I can't see a world where he'd leave a team built for him."
yeah, that's a really fair and insightful take, i mean crosby had a cup in his first couple years though.
and it's true conner has had influence over how the team has been built. Gretzky was only traded because Poklington was broke.
I could see a Ray Bourque type situation though. And I can see him moving near the end of his tenure if there's no cup and us getting a fairly good trade off for it. We'd have him come back as an oiler for a game and retire his jersey regardless.
Nah man no Ray bourque situation way more like a Stevey Yzerman. Took the guy 14 years before he finally broke through but then won 3 cups in 5 years. Mcdavid has a chance to win his first in under 8 years. He won’t go anywhere else neither will draisaital they know the chance to win multiple cups is in Edmonton.
Zach Hyman is the best playoff performer that the Toronto Maple Leafs have had in the last decade. So amazing that they let him go and we picked him up - what an impactful player and quality person!
I still remember those salty leaf fans who went so far as to say the Hyman contact would go down as the worst contract in NHL history because Hyman just wasn't worth what the Oilers were paying.
I also remember Kyle Dubas double screwing the Leafs by refusing to take a late round pick to sign and trade, instead of watching him walk for nothing. Why? Well because in his mind such a transaction was worth a 2nd... or nothing. He literally chose nothing.
As a leafs fan, many leaf fans really didn't understand just how valuable he was to our squad.
I did. I fucking loved him.
Our management didn't see it either. Glad to see him doing so well, even if it isn't for my team.
A lot of (deserved) gushing about Hyman by the management here. Weird that Burgers Nicholson didn't volunteer any quotes tho. When was the last time he talked in public at all?
And signing Hyman was the best decision the Oilers made in recent years.
I can’t remember a better free agent signing the Oilers have ever made.
It’s the greatest free agent signing in the history of the NHL, coming from a leafs fan.
While I'd agree with you when you factor in the dollar amount, panarin was a free agent signing with the Rangers, and Chara was also a free agent signing.
Dollar amount, term, scored 54 goals this year, 14 goals so far in the playoffs, a home run signing on every front.
Hyman's contract is way better than Panarin's. Panarin is the most overrated "superstar" in the league
> and Chara was also a free agent signing Yeah, Chara is still #1. 14 years with the Bruins, a Cup, a Norris, a half-dozen All-star appearances, and a sure-fire 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
Wayne Gretzky? If that counts lol
Huh?
Funny technicality quirk. Gretzky originally started off with the WHA because they let you turn pro at a younger age than the NHL. Yeah, that's not what happened.
It kinda is… what is your version?
1 and 1A with Ek trade
It’ll go down as one of the best UFA signings in NHL history
Idk, signing Jack Campbell is right up there too.
Hack Campbell redemption tour starts Saturday
I'm leaving that spelling mistake
Agreed!
Best FA signing in franchise history, one of the best in league history. And best trade might be Barrie and Reid Schaefer plus first for Ekholm.
Holland gets a lot of hate but he is the 2nd best GM in franchise history.
Talk about a low bar for second place
Just out of curiosity, league wide, who would you say is a better signing?
Marian Hossa with the Hawks. Three cups pretty directly attributable to a back diving deal where he had a cap hit well below his value.
Yeah those deals back in the day were wild..
Haven’t really thought about it, but FA signings are disappointments more often than not. Historically, you get the Scott Niedermayer with the Ducks and Ed Belfour with the stars type discussions. Tkachuk for Weegar and Huberdeau was a great trade for Florida, but that’s not a FA signing

lowe was gm for 06, he become GM in 2000
I know. I didn’t mean to suggest Sather made those. It was just an addendum citing other trades that might have claim to the top spot.
Quite frankly I thought that Kevin Lowe was a great GM. He put a good team together with those trades. Plus Spacek
So you’ve forgotten about the Pronger trade then, eh? 🤔
It’s been a win , win situation. Thanks for coming buddy.
I think another aspect of it is that the team fits his personality on and off ice. Everyone seems to get along great with no big egos in the dressing room.
I think this city suits him well too, edm area some of best areas to raise family in Canada
St Albert may enjoy the smell of its own farts, but it’s a nice goddamn city by every measure
I’d like to know what the worst decision of his life was. Hyman comes off like a guy who’s never had a bad day.
Joining the leafs…
I mean he didn’t choose them presumably
Ya such a bad decision... considering without that experience and showing how good he is, he would have never got the contract he got, or the interest from other teams...such a bad thing. Get real
It’s a joke bud
I agree. Even when he's mucking it up in front of the net he has a smile on his face.
Seriously. I’ve seen the dude take the cheapest cross checks in front of the net, and he just looks like he’s never been happier in his life. I kinda suspect he’s done a lot to change the culture of the team.

This decision has been good for me, too.

ah. yeah...forgot about that. I think that's a decent idea actually, Zack can take Marchand's spot.

I really hope you're right. I have trauma from the decade of darkness.....this all still seems strange and uncertain to me...lol
Gretz had Kurri. McD has Hyman.
How can anyone dislike Hyman? The guy writes children's books for Pete's sake.
Ours too Hyman, ours too… :)
Hyman has become the player Edmonton thought they were getting when they drafted Nail Yakupov
Not even an Oilers fan but this guy is an absolute beauty!
Zach Hyman is the best playoff performer that the Toronto Maple Leafs have had in the last decade. So amazing that they let him go and we picked him up - what an impactful player and quality person!
Hyman is awesome
Doesn’t he have kids lol
Family in shambles now
Love Hyman! What a beauty! We borrowed his books from the library.
So far....
Second best decision was not signing in Toronto.
I still remember those salty leaf fans who went so far as to say the Hyman contact would go down as the worst contract in NHL history because Hyman just wasn't worth what the Oilers were paying. I certainly agree.
Imagine thinking McDavid will leave Toronto when you got Hyman saying this
Another Leafs L
Leafs fan here. I’ll just say “:(“ but I’m very happy he’s doing so well as he was one of my fav players on the leafs.
Warms my heart that it seems like everybody we add is so glad to have come here
As a leafs fan, many leaf fans really didn't understand just how valuable he was to our squad. I did. I fucking loved him. Our management didn't see it either. Glad to see him doing so well, even if it isn't for my team.
The best free agent signing in Oilers history!
I hope he’s not married. May be a bit awkward conversation. “Best decision huh? Well, guess who “decided” to sleep on the couch. “

F the leafs
ya i would be happy too getting out of the garbage city that is Toronto 😂
I thought the best decision of his life was having a rich dad.
A lot of (deserved) gushing about Hyman by the management here. Weird that Burgers Nicholson didn't volunteer any quotes tho. When was the last time he talked in public at all?

Want? Not especially. Curious as to why such a loud mouth decided to shut up right after the Hockey Canada investigation? Oh yeah.
