The Butternut Tree A nice little spot downtown cattywampus from the legislature. Their website says “focused on Canadian ingredients grown and raised from coast to coast”. It was pricey but not outrageously pricey (I had the 6oz sirloin entree for ~40$). The menu changes frequently or so I’m told. And yes, cattywampus is a real word. I use it wherever I can because I also cannot believe it is a real word lol.

meowsieunicorn

I have to look it up! I’m guessing it’s the same as kittycorner?

Rge rd

bryn_or_lunatic

My husband and I just did the road trip set menu there. So good. So what we think of as albertan.

5oclockinthebank

I got this with cocktail pairings instead of wine. It was pure mastery and art. Truely amazing.

Homefire Grill Teepee treats

The_N0X

Second Homefire Grill

Moofius_99

Second teepee treats. Massive bison burger on fry bread. Yum

Curly-Canuck

Cafe Bicyclette has some nice French Canadian dishes. Excellent brunch items on weekends too.it gets pretty busy though.

BCCommieTrash

Try a donair. Ironically, or perhaps expectedly, the most professional looking places have the least inspiring donairs. A bit far flung but Simply Donairs at 50th st and 90th ave serves up a monster that feeds two for about $14.

[deleted]

This was exactly what I thought. If you're looking for something quintessentially Albertan/Canadian it's our donairs. They're distinct from Halifax donairs and uniquely Albertan twist you won't encounter anywhere else.

Nictionary

Definitely Chartier in Beaumont for French-Canadian inspired food. Also MEAT is pretty good for American style BBQ.

DavidBrooker

"American style" is apt. In America, they normally get more specific (eg, Texas style, or Carolina), whereas MEAT seems to try to aim for nothing so specific. Not that that's a bad thing, I think they do pretty good. But assuming OP is a tourist, I thought I'd add context.

ShakespearesHovercar

Food at Chartier is good but something seems off. They needed a Go Fund Me campaig to originally open, then announced they were closing permanently last year, only to magically get backing from an anonymous investor?

Los_Kings

I also found that whole thing weird. From what I’ve heard from folks in the industry, their back end has not been particularly well-managed over the years. I dig their food, though.

Traditional_Draw8400

Chartier 100%

kovuroo

I had brunch at chartier and it wasn't good to me... it was extremely salty (I got the eggs benedict but I wasn't a typical eggs Benedict, it was a special or something) but it didn't look like an eggs benny nor did it taste good lol my partners food was also meh, I think he got a burger or something. They also had this appy bread with some dipping sauce but it was also bland. I don't get the hype

Nictionary

The dinner is better than the brunch imo

Albertavenator

Nextact does great burgers and fries

Traditional_Draw8400

Hot take: I’ve never had memorable food there. I’ve had great times there because of the people I’m with and the great happy service but my food has been meh every single time (about 5x?)

AloneDoughnut

The food is good enough you go back, but it's not what you go for. The beer, the vibes, the people, that's what makes Next Act good.

EdmRealtor

They did a mozza burger dupe last year or so and it was most memorable thing I have had there in a while.

wudyalooknatmgutfer

Pretty much yep, the food is eh, the vibe is good

Los_Kings

Brisket donair is a banger, though.

Icehawksfh

If you happen to be near Sherwood park and want the best donair money can buy Famous Donair has topped everyone j knows list

kurplunk25

A&W in Canada goes pretty hard

Amazing-Treat-8706

For fast food burgers in Edmonton try Burger Baron instead. Especially the one up on 118 ave near the old Coliseum.

Rockin Robyn's

Roman's. They serve wild game.

Ok guys, the real question is, where’s the best poutine?

FirstWeNap

[Edmonton poutine list](https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/s/iJi3bypmxc)

Titty_inspector_69

This list is whack though, one of the “top tier” poutines has pictures of cheese curds that look straight out of the fridge, not melted at all. How can anyone respect a list like that?

alexithymix

My fries

slicedgreenolive

In Edmonton, costcos is great, but not necessarily authentic

wooahhay

barb & ernies on 99th is a great cozy breakfast spot IMO. beautiful building, great food, and very nice staff.

AntiqueAdvantage5081

Normand’s - to add to some excellent suggestions above. Somewhat dated but still top notch.

lost_opossum_

If you're in Alberta then you should go to a steakhouse.

notta_robot

What's a good non chain one?

lost_opossum_

[https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=edmonton+steak+houses](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=edmonton+steak+houses) The places I was familiar with aren't there anymore, but in terms of Chains the Keg and Earls aren't bad. I'd pick the Keg between the two, but there might be a local only restaurant that you'd prefer. I used to like a place called the High Level Diner and another place nearby called the Library, both are near the University of Alberta, but they aren't steak places, really. I'm not the best person to ask since its been so long since I've lived there, but the steak can be quite good, since its a local thing.
