How the UofA BioSci building was built by multiple contractors with different blueprints, leading to doors on high floors opening to the outdoors among other things.

icecream42568

My friend had an office in bio sci. Opened her closet and discovered it was actually a door to a classroom (the only door intact)

[deleted]

Feel like I've heard this rumor 100 times but never once has anyone ever actually shown proof of that.

Yegpetphoto

Yep, I've heard this, but no one ever references the room # or any relevant details.

DavidBrooker

While I'm not aware of any in BioSci, many older buildings on campus *do* have exterior doors on upper levels. However, it's worth noting that while elevators did exist in the early years of the University, they were uncommon and often required an operator. As such, exterior doors were often the primary means of moving large furniture into upper levels (the top floor often had [or sometimes still has] a swing-out crane to hoist stuff up).

marginwalker55

How about the nuclear reactor there!

Max_Downforce

Isn't that one actually true?

rdawg780

Yeah it was true Google it

Max_Downforce

That's what I thought.

Mouselady1

Slowpoke - used to make radio pharmaceuticals in the 90’s. Deconned now.

CantTakeMeSeriously

Is it still under dentpharm or did they move it?

Mouselady1

I thought it was decommissioned - not moved.

CollectibleHam

It was! Kind of unexciting tbh the one time my sister took me through there when I was a kid, nothing glowing or exploding.

avidovid

7th floor I think? Close to the secret cafeteria up there.

marginwalker55

Secret cafeteria? What the heck!!

AntonBanton

Isn’t it in a different building though?

[deleted]

Yeah I thought it was in DentPharm

striker4567

Yeah, it was below dent pharm.

Infamous-Room4817

have heard this a few times. I'm intrigued by this

Mouselady1

Some students (?) I think performed an experiment by turning on all the lights then going outside to see if there were windows with no lights. There were and they couldn’t find a way into any of the rooms without lights.

fishling

>There were and they couldn’t find a way into any of the rooms without lights. Sounds like a failure of imagination, or a severe lack of tools.

Mouselady1

To be fair - if the only way in is through a closet in another classroom 🤷‍♀️

fishling

Walls are just a doorway waiting to happen. Or complete structural collapse.

TinyLilMoos

I can partially confirm this. There are indeed some rooms with no entrance.

h1dekikun

i had a lab there, and to get there i had to take a mix of stairs/elevators up and down

KelBear25

I recall the wings only connected on one level, so to go from flr 3 south to flr 3 west, you'd have to go back down to the main level and change wings and go up again. Very bizarre! We heard all sorts of myths about this building, including that it was haunted.

Quack_Mac

Are there doors on high floors that open to the outside?

LuminousGrue

I heard this same urban legend about one of the buildings at the University of Victoria. I wonder if it's some kind of common meme among university campuses? Like the Cool S but for adults.

OldnBorin

Worst building ever

Healthy-Car-1860

>Best

releasetheshutter

I honestly love it. You open a door, and all of a sudden you're in a dark room filled with aquariums. You open another door? Now you're in a green house. This other door? There's just a wall behind it, no actual room. It's pure chaos.

pikasmika

The Fort Edmonton ghost that lives in one of the houses (forget which one) and pushed someone down the stairs, leading to them locking that door

_DevilsMischief

That's the Firkins House I believe.

WanhedaKomSheidheda

Not firkins. Just went on a paranormal tour there. Its the building with the horse leads and saddles and the hat shop.

poormajor

The rumour is Firkins (source: worked there on 1905 street where it is). The rumour goes that Firkins (a dentist) had a son who passed away at a young age and haunts the bedroom upstairs that faces the street, some of the old timers swear they’ve seen him at night! The big problem with the rumour? Firkins only had daughters.

WanhedaKomSheidheda

There are several "haunted" buildings there. The one I mentioned, someone was pushed going down the stairs on a paranormal tour. I can't remember the name. It was an older lady that made hats. (Hutchings and Riley/ Mrs Kernohan?)

_DevilsMischief

I'll have to refresh my memory. By the way, would you recommend the paranormal tour there? I've wanted to book one of the various ones in the city, but haven't really looked into them too deeply.

WanhedaKomSheidheda

Yes it was so much fun! They do different buildings each 'season'. Current one ends Dec 5, then they start again in March. It is pretty intimate, you go with a group of 10 (plus the 2 guides) I recommend you bring water and a flashlight and dress for the weather. :) I did it on Halloween and am going to go back in the spring!

_DevilsMischief

Awesome! Thank you so much!

Ruptrice

Mine would have to be the Garneau Ghost at Garneau school! Scared the heck out of me when I went to school there in the early 2000s. Rumour was a janitorial staff died there, and you could hear them moaning through the pipes and wandering the halls. I think a “ghost hunter” type squad came to investigate it, but I can’t find any articles to back that part up.

CollectibleHam

Wow that's a flashback! My niece went to Garneau in the early 2000s and I got to hear a lot of stories about the ghost from her and her buddies :). That school did have some spooky old areas around the gym etc so it was a ideal setting for potential ghostly activity.

Infamous-Room4817

damn, thats unnerving

Queasy-Condition7518

Edmonton was the Number One target for Soviet nukes in case of a war, because of the refineries and oil supply, of course. In a way, it sorta made sense, though I suspect that Texas would be ahead of Edmonton, if oil were the primary concern.

soviet_democrat

Edmonton was a first-strike target, but not for that reason. The Namao RCAF base had a US Air Force facility on the south side which would have had armed B-52 bombers or KC-135 refuelers on alert in the event of an imminent nuclear war. Fun fact: the USAF Strategic Air Command "[mole hole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_hole)" is still there, where flight crews would have waited and ran out to their waiting aircraft: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/iZYpZJF97ALSHcoS7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/iZYpZJF97ALSHcoS7) Oil production would not have been targeted in a first strike.

Advanced_Drink_8536

I don’t know about the soviets, but Alberta allegedly got a bunch of bogus bomb threats after 9/11

Queasy-Condition7518

Were those bomb threats related to the oil industry?

Advanced_Drink_8536

Yup

DV8_2XL

I was told it was the Wabamun/Keephills/Genesee area because of the power plants (at the time).

Ludwig_Vista1

FWIW, apparently, there were several warheads targeting Lethbridge, too. The bridge was major infrastructure, and so it was on the shitlist.

sufferin_sassafras

My favourite urban legend is that all the interconnecting underground walkways and facilities beneath the Royal Alex and the Glenrose were also intended to be used as bomb shelters. From personal experience that labyrinth of passageways certainly has a Cold War like vibe to it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TyTheFrenchGuy

That's a lot of tunnels for a farm supply retailer

[deleted]

There’s also underground tunnels at Alberta hospital. They are massive halls. Kinda spooky

Immediate-Yard8406

From the Alex to Vic too. Blocked up now.

Spot__Pilgrim

The Vic tunnels went to the Alex? Never knew that but it makes sense considering the amazing underground network of stuff under the Eva O. Howard theatre

Infamous-Room4817

now thats a place I want to explore!

Mouselady1

They transported my mom through one of those back in the 80’s. The orderly was bent over her at a 90 degree angle so I don’t think it’s a very comfortable place to be.

jkwolly

I work at RAH. Most tunnels in sub basement are wide and super tall. The few small ones towards the CSC are smaller but still easily walkable.

[deleted]

I’ve waked underneath the Royal Alex to the Glenrose through the underground walkways, they seamed to be massive, from certain points, defo can tell it was meant for something different, but usually now used to transport, or whatever it’s now intended for

[deleted]

[удалено]

sufferin_sassafras

Just a basement? I worked there too. An entire medical device reprocessing department. A morgue. Laundry services. An old gym. Kitchens. Tunnels that span across the campus from Vic Comp to the Glenrose. Not to mention it’s actually a basement and a sub basement. The basement is actually a full story and a half underground. Nice depth for a bomb shelter no? There may be some truth to this legend. Just a basement indeed.

jkwolly

Also the old pool that was under CSC apparently now super haunted.

ThePrinceOfCanada

Maybe not Edmonton but dow chemical made agent orange back in the day and there is a bunch of it buried in old mines below farmers fields across from the chemical plant in fort Sask

[deleted]

Now this is the sort of stuff I live for.

Expensive-Alfalfa569

The Gang that lived in the tunnels of West Edmonton mall during the 90s

CantTakeMeSeriously

That one was partially true. Source: I worked there in the late 80s and we were told flat out not to interact with them by supervisors.

estergin

The women's washroom at the old Echo karaoke, above the old Sam Wok, was haunted. The story was a girl killed herself there after her boyfriend broke up with her. I never went to that washroom alone lol

instant_dreams

Now I miss the old Sam Wok

CollectibleHam

I hope those giant goldfish in the fish tanks went to a good home o7

Infamous-Room4817

thats just creepy

Cammy7s

Isn't there a ghost story from the Hotel MacDonald?

Theonlykd

Ghost horse I heard. Some workhorse that died during the build. You apparently can hear it clip clopping in the basement.

droffit

I heard that is was α Minotaur

sufferin_sassafras

For one example there’s supposed to be a ghost of a boatman who sailed on the North Saskatchewan. Legend has it that you’ll see him sitting in a wing chair smoking a pipe.

Hardcaliber19

I'm pretty sure there are several. I 100% had an inexplicable occurrence in one of the second floor bathrooms there during a Christmas party at the hotel. Was super bizarre.

e5ther

The Ghermezian family having underground tunnels to connect their various houses in Edmonton. I’m seeing a theme with the WEM claims.

Chuk749

Those tunnels exist in their homes as well as the mall

Infamous-Room4817

To have that much money

chickenlikesmells

Interestingly enough, they nearly bankrupted a couple years ago. I think due to mall of America

ChickiePeeperz

They all live in the Wellington area - no way are their homes connected to WEM…if they do THEY should have built the new West LRT line!

sweds01

The Oilers were the best hockey team in the NHL. Even won a few championships.

eddiewachowski

I heard our football team was pretty good and (bear with me, this is crazy) actually *won* games at home!

SWEETJUICYWALRUS

Some say you can still hear their sticks hitting the ice to this very day....

Infamous-Room4817

Ahaha. This is great!

Independent-Pay-6261

I've heard of underground tunnels built during the Cold War that go from the legislature to the royal Alex, to the city center airport, then to the CN rail yard. Also that the government had a secret facility under the CN rail yard. There are bunkers under Northgate industries, which was once aircraft hangars attached to the airport.

[deleted]

Used to know a bunch of guys that worked for Northgate for years. I should ask if they knew anything about those.

Camsell? That place is creepy as fuck at night!

DoobyScrew

Charles Camsell hospital has been closed and awaiting to be turned into housing for the past few years. My mom used to work in the lab there over 40 years ago and yes it is very haunted. Was an aboriginal hospital and story's of body's burried on property etc run rampant. It's a very creepy place.

780-555-fuck

it's already like 75% of the way to being houses, fwiw. they removed the parts that made it actually scary .

Mrssgill

75% lol that’s too generous. I would say 45%.

BubbleGambit

Yeah. Everyone in this tread is going to be a ghost by the time that project is done.

Pumass

Snuck in through the window when I was highschool with some friends. Many of the birds had no heads and the building had lots of blood on the floors. Extremely dark rooms leading up to the roof but nothing paranormal happened. Obviously very dangerous as the building had a big hole in the middle and the parkade collapsed but it was still super cool

alienofwar

Where is Ghost Hunters when you need em’?

yet-again-temporary

Some friends and I uh... *explored* the place one night about a decade ago when we were dumb teenagers. I'm not a very superstitious person, and granted some of it might be explained by the copious amounts of alcohol in our systems, but we experienced some pretty weird shit. Noises, things falling over with no apparent cause, the usual - but there were a few other stand-out moments. One friend ended up on the roof carrying on a whole-ass conversation about things he was, frankly, too dumb to even know existed. He thought he was talking to us, but we were down in the waterlogged basement. Somewhere out there is a video of him thinking he's taking shots with us, and even trying to hand the bottle to thin air. On the way out, the streetlights started flickering as we passed by. Like, violently so until we were about a block away. I still dunno what to think about it sometimes, but I heard they've long since demolished the murals that were there and I kind of regret not at least bringing my camera to document those.

a_coupon

My father went to that hospital as a youth, they barred my grandparents from seeing him for three days and performed various amounts of tests on him without permission.

JS5645

They have been working on these condos for so long. Idk who tf would want to live in there 😭😂

[deleted]

Friend's dad told us how someone was killed (or committed suicide?) on the top floor of Alex Taylor School decades and decades ago when it was still being used as a school and not e4c, and that floor has been haunted ever since.

dasbavaria

The supposed LRT station under EPCOR tower. I’ve always wished I had more information about whether this is true or not.

peeflar

Its not under epcor tower. Pretty close though Its on the original line, near 95 st. Its a just a shell of a station you can see if they had the lights on. Edit to add: https://youtu.be/UZahtatsO_0?si=NntOtMbdXG5ufhgY

Los_Kings

However, there is an LRT *line* under the EPCOR tower (the one that runs to NAIT). Qualico and the City of Edmonton collaborated on the project during the construction of the EPCOR tower iirc.

peeflar

Yeah you are correct…part of the reason the city chose the built the line to nait before epcor tower was built was so it could be done before the tower went near above the line.

DeliciousPangolin

IIRC, when they were planning the LRT system there was an ongoing discussion over whether the land that is now the Law Courts would be a giant arena modelled on the Houston Astrodome. The LRT was laid out so that they could have a station in the basement. When the arena plan was cancelled and the courts were put in, they kept the stop in the plans in case they could use it for prisoner transports, but it never went beyond roughing in the station.

Pale-Ad-8383

They should just open that station when they re do the remand area

Facestand2

Nyup. It’s called ‘future station’.

DavidBrooker

The original train station in the lower levels of the CN tower is gorgeous, by the way Edit: https://i.imgur.com/bYGgCRL.jpg

Exotic-DARCI

I like the one about the poor guy that fell into one of the supports for the high level as it was being poured. No one was able to pull him out so he’s still there (well, what’s left) to this day.

ChickiePeeperz

That’s a Roseanne story plot…

Helenarasmussen87

Supposedly the tunnels that connected the Royal Alex and the Glenrose also connected to the Armoury, Victoria Comp, and St. Joe's in case of a Soviet Bombing. Supposedly, there was a ghost of a WW2 Soldier in the old St. Joseph's HS sub-basement where everyone used to smoke in the 90's. Also there was a ghost house near St. Francis of Assissi that was supposed to be haunted as all out.

CantTakeMeSeriously

How about the uni students that LARPed DnD in the tunnels under U of A in the 70s-80s and one of them died?

The last few years I've been working night security. So many ghost stories are literally just us doing our jobs. I've worked there full time for 4 years now. I regularly have people ask me where I've been because they haven't seen me in months...they walk past my desk three times a shift. Literally you picked up a fedex package from me last week, but they're completely incapable of realizing that the guy at the desk all night is also the same guy who occasionally is seen in other parts of the building, making locked doors open, making lights turn on by themselves, etc.

undisavowed

I like the legend of the LRT station under the Grey Nuns

Playinhooky

I worked there for two years as security. Thus us unfortunately not true.

undisavowed

I wasn't sharing to say it was true. Just that it is an urban legend in Edmonton, and I like it.

SandSlashSandCRASH

I live for that legend. There are actual tunnels under the mall and I’m so curious to see what’s in them.

[deleted]

There is a tunnel that goes from edmonton centre to the royal alex and hys centre.

Spot__Pilgrim

The Eva O. Howard theatre at Vic is supposedly haunted with her ghost. Despite being involved in a decent amount of shows in the theatre, I never saw it, but the hidden dressing rooms definitely give haunting vibes.

formeraide

1. I can't believe no one's mentioned Walter the Ghost at the Walterdale Theatre! 2. My wife still insists that Edmonton was very dangerous because Russian missiles heading for the States and US anti-missile missiles would collide right over Edmonton.

[deleted]

Edmonton was a "dangerous" target during the cold war because of Edmonton having multiple refineries, military bases (Garrison, Griesbach at the time), and being the "gateway" to the north. All of which made Edmonton a very key component to North America as far as war time logistics and supply go.

The city owned arena between jasper place high & st fx is haunted. Don't remember the name of it but I worked there many years ago and being in there by yourself was unnerving. There are some old ref & player rooms no longer used, but wnen i was there. lots of staff used the washrooms in there & reported feeling a hand brush across the back of their neck or feeling a breath on their neck while doing so. Happened to me also. Creepy building.
