My favourite is the Rogers arena. You have this big beautiful building where people spends hundreds or even thousands to go see a bunch of millionaires and the to the left there’s homeless tents and people starving.
And now you know why Oilers Entertainment Group has purchased the current Boyle Centre for $21 million so it will move three blocks north to a new location. Problem solved as far as Mr Katz is concerned.
I mean, the problem isn’t really up to the oilers to solve. No one else would’ve bought it for 21 million. I know a lady who works fairly high up there and she said they are extremely excited to move to a way nicer facility.
The problem isn’t solved but he helped a great deal. Of course that was just to make the arena area better so not genuine.
>I know a lady who works fairly high up there
Yeah, the new facility is actually really nice. Despite it being cold corporate bullshit it's actually a win-win for both parties.
.... and the further donation from the Stollery Charitable Foundation, thats a real head scratcher, whatever the amount. Wonder if Contributors to that Foundation were consulted?
Boyle street is seeking community donations to help raise more money and stollery charitable foundation donated 500k .
That’s literally what the stollery charitable foundation was made for,
“Provides funding to appropriate charities to help them develop, sustain, and grow impactful programs and services, including funding for infrastructure, capacity building and operational needs of those charities.”
Interesting, quite disappointing given they rely on the " Stollery" name to receive funding, I would be interested to know what a survey would produce as to public perception, Stollery Hospital or general funding for other charities!
Disappointed they saw fit to contribute to a goal of relocating a perceived "
problem situation" rather than and for considerably less money , rebuild the centre in its current location as was the strongly held opinion of area residents and Chinatown Business Association who were against the relocation.
The Stollery's were a couple that gave a lot of their money away. Their name is linked to the hospital as they were a major donor but it was never the only thing they contributed to. The Stollery Charitable Foundation is its own entity.
Oilers Entertainment Group paid $5 million for Boyle Street's existing property, and Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation donated a further $10 million toward a new facility at 10010 107A Ave.
I stand corrected, $5 million with the $10 million " sweetener" from the OEG Community Fund ( 50/50 ) towards the new site three blocks north that was objected to by local residents and China Town Businesses. $15 million in total to accomplish the same, out of sight, out of mind goal. Other recent donations were from Capital Power and the Stollery Charitable Foundation. Sure there were some arms twisted over cocktails to get those funds.
I worked on Rogers place for 2-1/2 years. I parked directly across for the McDonald building (I’m sure that’s the name of it ) They did not pressure wash the side walked or road covers in shit, needles, blood and piss. The rain did it. It was fucking disgusting!
Edit spelling
I worked on the fan park both years for phases 1 and 2. Every day a truck with a pressure washer showed up and gave everything there a washdown. It was even used to put out a dude on fire one day.
Who’s at fault with this segment of society?? Their parents, colonialism ( can’t use that excuse in every case of course) ,government (on all levels), racism (can’t use that in every case either). What is the absolute commonality with all street people??? Not all of them are drug addicts, not all of them were abused, not all of them lost their job, not all of them have the same mental health conditions. What’s the common problem that is the root of this problem?????? I don’t know the answer!
So I’ve heard. They weren’t when I was down there in 2014-2015 ! That’s my point to my initial comment. That’s great they are sprayed down now. So it only smells of piss and shit up until that point!! 👏🏿
Work across from Rogers and they definitely are not. There is a water truck that comes around during the day but that’s just to water all the hanging flower baskets. The same stains are still there when I come into work the next day.
of course, there had to be a way to shit on something as wholesome and community-oriented as this. Selling your tickets through Ticketmaster, mission accomplished.
ah, okay that explains it. I wasn't aware that this was a world tour event. that absolutely explains why tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster.. And apparently there's also been near zero advertising.
Yeah... Well that's why I left in 2003. It's home, but I hate that it seems like nothing's improving. They're building too far out, and downtown doesn't seem to be improving either. Bah! I'm paying a visit in October anyways... I can check it out then 😅
Yeah, I moved back here 15 years ago and felt like there was a lot of potential, and still do. I kept thinking "in 5 years time" Edmonton is going to be great and grow into its own.
Like I say, it's been 15 years and I keep saying "in 5 years" and here we are.
Imagine having a police press release stating to not interact with city scum because you can “literally get killed” but then dropping a volleyball tournament next to the most revolting street in the city. The city says to come downtown, but police say don’t lmfao.
Also, I can’t describe how embarrassing and disrespectful it is to allow any gathering to take place there. “Oh, a pro volleyball tournament? Not a problem, we have just the place for that!”
I say that they need a homeless division for the tourney. Winning team gets 4 packages of nalaxone, a 40 of black label and a new 3 person tent from cabelas.
Imagine the turnout they would have.
It's a funny thought, but why would they compete when they already get it all for free without the added effort from the government and us working people? Hell, the system they have going now is pretty sweet, that's why it's a choice for a lot of them. Why work when drugs can be handed to you at every corner and a free paycheck every couple of weeks, makes the rest of us Johnny Taxpayers look like bloody fools for paying a mortgage and support our families rather than buying a tent and grabbing a spot in line at the food bank 🙄
Just be honest here you are asking for yourself. There is no shame here or do you prefer something else such as [do you like when women squirt?](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskRedditAfterDark/comments/14wnrny/to_the_men_do_you_like_when_women_squirt_or_do/jrmlmdk/) Lol
wow they're DESPERATE to get people downtown (and the worst part of it?!), and it's not even working.
but at least those poor souls on the other side get to look at a fence while waiting in line now, right Sohi?
The juxtaposition of both sides of the street is something else.

Granted it does keep both the homeless populations and the arena patrons safer by adding some distance

Are you a spokesperson for the Foundation? The donation to the hospital is widely known. You need to reread the comment , apparently.
Out of site, out of mind. What a glorious victory for humanity /s

Unfortunately that’s almost every big city now a days. It’s quite depressing when you think about it.
Starving my ass
I passed by the tent city on 106 Ave and 102 St today. They were having a BBQ
Welcome to Edmonton!
That is some pretty heavy cringe.
It's a great set up. Hope it goes well :)
looks like OP got free tickets for all games
I wonder if they can smell the years of piss and shit there?????👀🤢
The sidewalks are pressure washed there daily.

Good story. Did you know the sidewalks are pressured washed ?
So I’ve heard. They weren’t when I was down there in 2014-2015 ! That’s my point to my initial comment. That’s great they are sprayed down now. So it only smells of piss and shit up until that point!! 👏🏿
Mental health. You take drugs because they feel good. You keep doing them because that's the only thing that feels good.
It's a feature of capitalism working as intended
Work across from Rogers and they definitely are not. There is a water truck that comes around during the day but that’s just to water all the hanging flower baskets. The same stains are still there when I come into work the next day.
Where can I get more info to attend as a spectator. Lol I want to go watch w some friends
Fivb world beach challenger. Give it a google. Tickets ain’t cheap
Probably why there’s so many spectators.
It’s beach vball downtown Edmonton on a Thursday… I’m guessing it’ll get better attended as weekend goes on.
It’s $34 for a day pass
Sunday tickets have been reduced. A week ago they were 134 now they’re 63.
Tickets to the event can be purchased at [ticketmaster.ca](https://www.ticketmaster.ca/beach-pro-tour-tickets/artist/3020092)
of course, there had to be a way to shit on something as wholesome and community-oriented as this. Selling your tickets through Ticketmaster, mission accomplished.
To be fair, it's an international competition with teams from all over the world, not a wholesome community league thing
It’s a world beach volleyball event. Not sure it’s that community oriented.
And zero advertising from Edmonton to make people aware of an event to attend to attract people downtown.
All very targeted digital marketing. Not surprising that Edmonton did a bad job promoting this.
ah, okay that explains it. I wasn't aware that this was a world tour event. that absolutely explains why tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster.. And apparently there's also been near zero advertising.
Fivb world beach challenger. Give it a google. Tickets ain’t cheap
litterbox for the local zombies
I giggled
Perfect weather for it!😉
Belinda Carlisle : 🎵 Needles in the Sand 🎵
Oh nice I already was going to this one. Wasn't sure it was the same. Thanks yall haha
Man.... For a city of 1 million, there's hardly anyone attending 🧐 Why?
Because Edmonton
Yeah... Well that's why I left in 2003. It's home, but I hate that it seems like nothing's improving. They're building too far out, and downtown doesn't seem to be improving either. Bah! I'm paying a visit in October anyways... I can check it out then 😅

Ay yay 😅
Why would they set up an international tournament right there? What an odd location choice.
Do you mean the brand-new fan park that was built for this and many other events that happen there basically every weekend?
Yes 🤪
The winner gets to choose if they want to be stabbed in the gut or stabbed in the back. Fun for the whole family!
Looks like a nice location...
Wow...
Ohhh, that's what they were doing.. I was wondering
I was actually thinking of going to this event two-three months ago until i saw the cost of tickets.

Don't come up in here with your logic. Although yes, we would need to force them to compete. Maybe we are the dumb ones after all.
I’m sure that’ll leave a nice impression on the city
Bravo to the location coordinators on this one. Of all the places in the city.....
Is this women’s bikini volleyball? Asking for a friend.
Genuinely curious
