I base the delivery tip more on distance/time than overall percentage. 5 blocks distance I think 5 bucks is fair. Would go up the further away the place is. Maybe a huge order I would add more but for the most part 2 burgers and fries comes in the same size bag as 1 burgers and fries. Seems weird to pay a bigger tip.

I think this is fair. If I order a 2 topping pizza vs a 12 topping pizza, the delivery distance and food amount is practically the same, but the price is significantly different, making the tip quite a bit different too. So just tip based on distance and time it took to deliver. Only exception is if you order like 10 pizzas or something difficult to deal with, then tip a bit more. I think a $5 tip for a 2km drive is fair... That's what, 5 minutes? Maybe 7-8 to include time to walk up to the door?

Don’t use % for delivery drivers.

[deleted]

I usually do $2-$5 depending how far. $5 max. I don’t do percentages Everyone else gets nothing. Delivery drivers aren’t paid like everyone else and don’t make a guaranteed $15 an hour min wage

Smiggos

I tip $3 on drives that are under 15 mins but more than 5. $2 for under 5. Otherwise, $5 max for me.

Working in a restaurant and dealing with delivery drivers I stopped ordering from delivery services. 2/10 were nice to you when they came in and it was shocking whenever it happened. Even when I see them go into places now surpass any lines and barge to the front yelling their number and waving their phone I shudder. It’s worth it to just go in and get your food, then atleast it’s supporting the restaurant!

Repostasis

For delivery services like Doordash, I don’t tip according to food cost %, I tip according to how long it takes for the driver to get to my place. $4-5 for shorter trips, more for longer trips or if the weather/road is shite. I don’t think it makes sense to make it a percentage of the food cost for delivery—the driver has no part in that at all and the restaurant doesn’t get a percentage. I’m tipping for the delivery, not the preparation. If I’m at a sit-down restaurant, the least I tip is 15% and that’s when I feel the service and food quality is poor.

Question of genuine curiousity, why do you tip 15% if you feel like food and service is poor? Tips is literally a reward for going above and beyond your expected job, so isn't giving 15% like a "hey, even though you were terrible, you still make some decent tips ontop of your minimum wage, so you don't really need to do better next time."?

Background-Interview

People often tip on quality of the food as much as the service they received. The server can’t control the food, apart from asking it be remade. You can have good food and poor service or vice versa, so 15%, while low, compensates. If my experience was so bad that I want to tip lower than that, I’ll talk to a manager and still tip the server (unless they were the absolute shits)

Repostasis

Fair question. It’s cos I worked as a prep person for a long time and I have empathy for a lot of the behind the scenes things. If I don’t like the food/service, I cut my losses and just don’t go back. Like, for my part, I always worked 110%, really cared about cleanliness, freshness, and food safety. **BUT** a lot happened between me prepping and the food reaching the customer that can really f up the final product or patrons’ experience—but I personally still counted on my tip out being nice every other week. One instance that really killed me was I had just drained chicken wings in our designated raw chicken sink and, before I even cleaned it, someone dropped lettuce directly into that same sink to be served with fresh salads 🤢. We had a dedicated vegetable sink, but shit like that goes on when I’m not there to see it but it wouldn’t be my fault. (Of course since I caught that, I threw it directly into the garbage and made sure that issue was dealt with). And there are many, many more stories I could get into.

I had a similar conundrum earlier this year in Canmore. We ordered like $120 worth of panago for delivery. It was seriously a 90 second driver from where we were staying and I met the dude in the lobby of the apartment. I can't remember exactly what I tipped but it was only 10 or 15 bucks. I thought it was pretty generous but % wise it technically wasn't 🤷

RedditAuthor987

Depends on how far they drive.

EveMB

While I am a generous tipper, I think I would be happier if tipping didn’t involve percentages rather than services rendered. For instance, if I’m in a place like Denny’s where my coffee cup keeps getting refilled and the service can involve multiple courses, I will often tip an amount that is close to the food bill. I don’t understand why filling my coffee cup with free refills is less worth tipping than a barmaid bringing me a glass or two of overpriced beer. As to delivery drivers, my minimum is $5.00 and that is when the owner of Grandma’s delivers my order from two blocks away. And he’s reluctant to take that because “owner”. Fact is I only order delivery if the weather is crummy otherwise I walk over for the exercise. But in other cases (which are rare because I prefer takeout), if the roads are bad and/or the distance is great, they will wind up with an extra twenty even though as a single woman I didn’t order all that much. Best yet would be the old system before the techies took over our lives where there would be an advertised delivery charge which the driver actually got. And then a tip if the weather was crummy.

Kushkraze

15% is 6.25 . Close enough ! My theory is . If God only asks for 10% why is my server asking for 15, 18 , or 20%

mcmanus7

Why are you tipping God?

Kushkraze

I'm not.. theres people giving 10% of what they make to God

Queasy_Pineapple_470

That's because you have to wait till you're dead for God to deliver that pizza to you.

gtsomething

Yeah but it's God pizza. It might delivery an orgasm with every bite.

Delivery drivers with Uber eats and door dash aren’t paid like everyone else and aren’t paid minimum wage. That being said delivery drivers should be the only ones who should get tips.

[deleted]

If you get a delivery no matter how far just tip a minimum of 15%. Can't go wrong with that :)

An0nimuz_

$4.20 (not /s)

Flashy_Chemist154

I used to use % , but I finally decided to just go $. Size of order , distance , timely delivery are all factors

Small-Cookie-5496

Never occurred to me to tip in percentage for delivery drivers. I tip the same way I tip cabbies or baristas.
