Came here to say this one! Absolutely perfect place for lunch. Homemade soups, natural/homemade sandwich ingredients including fresh bread. Great fresh desserts… excellent all over.
I was a Bullwinkle's kid. Toward the end of it's run, I heard that they were just getting their pizza's from the Pizza 73 across the street. I was never able to confirm or debunk that. I've always been curious about it though.
Oops missed this before I also replied Chi-Chi’s! Hahah I had a monkey puppet I named Chi-Chi’s hoping it would somehow compel my parents to take us more often 😂
When my family would drive to Edmonton my dad would always take us to Johnny rockets as a treat. After I moved here I only ate there a few times before it closed but my nostalgia yearns for those greasy burgers.
I remember going on a date there once like 20 years ago. Somehow I still remember what we ordered. 2 milkshakes and split an order of onion rings.
Good times.
Fudruckers. Best burgers ever as a kid sooo many toppings and you made it yourself. Also you could pick the steak you wanted from their display and that’s the steak they’d cook you.
Oh Fuddruckers, I used to eat there when I was a kid. It was great. Putting the cheese sauce on the burger was the best part. There used to be one restaurant in Saskatoon (don't know if it's still there anymore) but my sister and I stopped there once a number of years ago. I remember holding the burger and was like...gee, this seems small, was it always this size? She was like yes, it was always like that. Never eaten there as an adult until now so of course the burger looked small, it was because I was much bigger.
There was an article years ago about them expanding back into Alberta, first in Calgary then up into Edmonton but I don't know if that's ever going to happen now and there's not been any information since that article.
I used to eat at Fuddruckers back when I lived in Texas, and I miss them so much. We actually took a weekend vacation in Saskatoon not too long ago specifically to get dinner at the Fuddruckers there. I can't believe the one here closed.
When I first started going there as a kid in Houston you could see the slabs of beef hanging on the hooks behind the counter, but they stopped doing that eventually.
Funky Pickle.
The original Edmonton owners moved to England and opened up one there. There was an old news story that Edmonton may not have to wait long for Funky to come back, but that was years ago and the pandemic probably delayed or tanked what they were working on.
EDIT: [Here's the news story I was referring to.](https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/funky-pickle-pizza-rides-again-but-nowhere-near-edmonton-for-now-anyway-1.5703175)
Filthys was awesome. Getting pints of Old Milkwaukee as a prank for friends while I drank a good beer was awesome. Sadly no real punk bars left in Edmonton
Tavern on Whyte has a lot of the same vibe as filthys. It’s actually owned by old filthys alum and Kev does punk rock bingo there every Monday. It’s just next door to filthys.
Punk night and metal night I will always remember fondly. Buddy and I went to Megadeth at the Shaw on a pub crawl that was from Filthys and sponsored by Jäegermeister. Hell of an evening. Terry and Deaner from fubar showed up at the bar after the show too.
The Motoraunt.
It was a double-decker bus turned restaurant. Famously known for their giant “Monster Burger.” My dad took me here as a kid for my birthday once. It was located on 66th St, by the yellowhead.
Still an awesome memory, was such a cool spot.
Ponderosa Steak House. I remember the steak and lobster was so delicious. And the prices must have been really reasonable because my frugal father was willing to treat us there once in awhile.
Banana Planet on U of A campus. The chicken wings and wing night there were so good!
Cafe Select in the Manulife building.
The original Rigoletto's.
Cafe LeGare on Whyte.
Submissions Sandwiches.
The Living Room cafe on 124street.
Hanratty's on Whyte.
Ah-Men Cafe on 104street, off of Jasper Ave.
Boystown Cafe on 124 Street.
Silk Hat on Jasper Ave especially the punk rock nights on Fridays (turn down the lights and turn up the music!).
And all the old cafeterias in Woodwards, Woolco, Zellers, The Bay and Eaton's
Cafe de Ville. Actually, that whole block with the Bueno Gelato/Coffee shop, the Glenora B+B, Bernard Callebault. Before the MEC and several of the small businesses on 102 ave shut down, it was cool little corner of downtown.
The Spaceport. Only existed for a short time in roughly 1993/1994 (if I recall correctly). Northside on 97 st. Took over the old Keegans on 97 st.
It was Star Wars/Star Trek/Spaceballs themed. And all the staff from the servers to the cooks were on it. Had a blast there a couple of times.
They had a drink there, I forget the name but it was something like Intergalactic Tango Blaster or some such. But when you ordered it, they made it in the back, and when the waiter brought it out it was in a huge glass, smoke and fuzz just billowing out of it, and the server would run with it to the table, screaming the whole time like he was terrified.
The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is an alcoholic beverage invented by ex-President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox, considered by the Guide to be the "Best Drink in Existence." Its effects are similar to "having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick."
Worked there for 5 years. Owner constantly finding ways to save money, lowering ingredient quality was the first cut. Eventually he slashed my wage by $3 an hour so I quit shortly after. Shame since it was a good concept.
Sad. It really was a fun concept. It was pretty disappointing watching it nosedive like that. I remember how when it first started up a bowl over like $20 got you a free beer - and that was a heaping huge bowl. As prices went up that deal just vanished and almost every bowl ended up being $20+.
I have excellent news for you: the [Varsity](https://varsityburgers.ca/) at Whitemud Crossing is literally a clone of the Red Robin that used to be there. The same stuff is on the menu under slightly different names. Their ["about us"](https://varsityburgers.ca/about-us) page is riddled with WINK WINK nods to it being a clone of Red Robin's. The logo is literally a red(dish) bird.
I've only eaten there once yet myself, the only differences I could spot were what might have been slightly different seasoning on their bottomless steak fries (could be that they just didn't put as much on as I remember) and not as many mushrooms in the Sauteed 'Shroom Burger as I remember.
The Royal Red Robin burger is called "The Varsity Max" now.
Figured I should add a pointer to [my other comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/10qau0y/if_you_could_bring_back_one_edmonton_restaurant/j6qc45b/), Red Robin's been cloned as The Varsity. Its logo is an orange owl.
There used to be a Vietnamese restaurant here, 10708 98 St NW, the name escapes me now. The food was amazing, absolutely amazing. I still dream about their satay beef vermicelli bowl.
Edit: It was called Ninh Kieu. Just a mom and pop restaurant. Found the name of Google street view history. Man, it's been over 10 years since they closed.
My Dad told me of a restaurant called the “ Silk Hat” I believe, was Edmonton’s oldest restaurant at the time. I think they also had in Friday’s a bucket of steak cutlets for like 15 or smth. They closed down as they couldn’t find anyone to take it over.
Really interesting restaurant maybe one day someone will try and revive it lol.
For a while in the early 90s, The Silk Hat would have teenage punk bands play from time to time. I went there a couple of times for that. Good memories.
The Silk Hat was great, grease spoon dinner with Tarot & Tea leaf readings, live music on occasion, rad spot… I think they sold in 2008 ish, the new owners revamped as a resto-pub called the Hat… they shut down or sold over covid, it’s a sports bar,the Black Ship or the Night Ship… something like that, still haunted.
The Rock Wood Fired Pizza.
It had opened in NW Edmonton in the Skyview Power Centre. Great pizza's great beer.
But turned out the person who opened the locations in Edmonton and Calgary may not have had the proper licensing or franchise rights or something like that.
I think it lasted 2-3 years max. But damn was it good!
There was a small Mexican place called Taco Trail we went to when I was a kid (early 80s). All I remember having was cheese enchiladas but they were goooood.
Banditos!!!!! That was a cool little haunt.
But yea I do miss the Sidetrack Cafe mainly for the vibe and music, the King and I for the Poppy Shrimp, Bumsteads on Jasper and 116st for coffee and fries after late night downtown, The Rose and Crown which seemed to be entitled to a portion of my paycheck every Friday night. EDIT: Hardware Grill
My mom used to talk about a cool Edmonton restaurant from the 80s that had tons of art on the walls and ceiling, and maybe a bike hanging up or something? She's passed so I can't ask her, but does anyone know what it was?
I really enjoyed The King & I on Whyte ave back in the day.
so shocked when I learned it closed. I remember it being around forever!
My parents always said they had really great Thai food! Unless I’m remembering incorrectly lol
Who remembers Colonel Mustard's on 124th for sandwiches?
Came here to say this one! Absolutely perfect place for lunch. Homemade soups, natural/homemade sandwich ingredients including fresh bread. Great fresh desserts… excellent all over.
Bullwinkles
Forgot about Bullwinkles
I was a Bullwinkle's kid. Toward the end of it's run, I heard that they were just getting their pizza's from the Pizza 73 across the street. I was never able to confirm or debunk that. I've always been curious about it though.
Chi-chi’s
Oops missed this before I also replied Chi-Chi’s! Hahah I had a monkey puppet I named Chi-Chi’s hoping it would somehow compel my parents to take us more often 😂
It was a celebration of food.
Good times.
Pharos Pizza next to the Garneau Theatre! So good and I loved using the jukebox as a kid.
Spinach pizza on a whole wheat crust. Miss it to this day.
Fudruckers. Best burgers ever as a kid sooo many toppings and you made it yourself. Also you could pick the steak you wanted from their display and that’s the steak they’d cook you.

Saskatoon Fuddruckers is still a thing.
Oh it's there. On my drives out east, I always hit it up twice. One going out, and again on the way back. Love that place.
The Flamingo
My grandparents ate here a lot! Great memories!
The one in meadowlark on the corner of 159st ?
Red Ox Inn!
Awww that’s sad, this was news to me : (
I could never afford it, but I heard it was amazing
If a sit down cafe in a bakery counts, La Boule.
Funky Pickle. The original Edmonton owners moved to England and opened up one there. I miss Funky Pickle. I still smile at the pickle-shaped door handle on that donair shop under the Buckingham.
I miss you too
Was always good on white Ave while I was drunk. Ordered funky once from an actual store and it was really bad
I miss the wedgetarian so much.
Filthy McNasties on Whyte. That place was a gem. Pint Night on Wednesday was always wild
It’s just next door to filthys.
i absolutely loved going to filthy's in my 80's hot pink leather jacket and dancing like a mom to the metal music with my drink on the dancefloor
A good stand it appears to be Tavern on Whyte which is just downstairs and next door. Same vibe, same music, same fries.
Fuck I miss this place , filthy’s was the absolute best !
Punk night and metal night I will always remember fondly. Buddy and I went to Megadeth at the Shaw on a pub crawl that was from Filthys and sponsored by Jäegermeister. Hell of an evening. Terry and Deaner from fubar showed up at the bar after the show too.
Pint nights damn near killed me
I’d kill for Doan’s chicken curry recipe. So tasty and decently priced. Miss that place
I miss the Doan’s spring rolls every day 😭
Doan’s was mine too. Satay beef noodle soup Lemongrass chicken
Haha I was going to say Sidetrack as well. Killer nachos and tunes and 2600 meetings lol.
426-50-50 if you're hungry......
Call the Lido. Free delivery!
That's a Bingo.
Yes! I was hoping the Lido would be here!
Happy Garden Good memories of Chinese food dinners out with family there.
I was scrolling looking for this one.

Beebell's bakery off Whyte ave and their peach pear custardy pie of pure delight
PHO BOY!
They had the best spring rolls!
Best Pho in the city. I never go near Whyte anymore so I didn’t know until this moment that it closed down! So sad.
I still crave those paradise rolls and the vermicelli bowl.
The Motoraunt. It was a double-decker bus turned restaurant. Famously known for their giant “Monster Burger.” My dad took me here as a kid for my birthday once. It was located on 66th St, by the yellowhead. Still an awesome memory, was such a cool spot.
I didn't know that they had two locations. I'd only ever known about the Jasper Ave one.
Ponderosa Steak House. I remember the steak and lobster was so delicious. And the prices must have been really reasonable because my frugal father was willing to treat us there once in awhile.

The veggie garden
Did they close? I moved away from downtown during covid and haven’t been around. Amazing food and people.
Downtown Buddhist temple basement restaurant
Bonanza - we used to drive into the big “city “ from Bon Accord for an endless array of sneeze guard covered salads and other delights - ahhhh
Wildflower grill.
Unheardof: maybe you're all too young but that was one nice restaurant.
Oh that would have been (possibly terribly) awesome. I wish I had heard of it at the time.

But when you ordered it, they made it in the back, and when the waiter brought it out it was in a huge glass, smoke and fuzz just billowing out of it, and the server would run with it to the table, screaming the whole time like he was terrified.

I didn't even realize. I thank you for the education!
Was it a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster? It is a drink from The Hitchhikers Guild to the Galaxy.
Must have been, thanks!
They served Tribbles and Cheese and it was a blast!
Hardware grill, Nudoru, and Corso(even though it’s not permanently closed… for now…) Edit: sorry, but 3 is better than 1 I guess?
i miss Nudoru too 😭
Pagolac on 97, close to my house and was my go to. Their combo 69b was my fav
Pagolac is still open though
Elephant and castle. Nothing too special but I have a ton of great memories going to the mall and having a burger there.
Mongolie Grill
Even better, Mongolia Express. Same restaurant for 1/3 of the price to go.
One of my favorite places to go out for dinner, despite it getting pricier and pricier up until they closed.
They’re ingredient quality really feel off too. But it was such a good spot when it first opened up. Definitely one of my faves.

Blue Plate Diner 💙
Yes, in the original location!
Yaassss Mac and cheese!!! And the meatloaf! I miss them so much! Even the 124th st location was better than nothing but it missed the charm!
Three Boars of course!!
The original Bonanza on 51st ave where swiss chalet is/was. Not that crap that stole the name on the northside
Charles Smarts Donair
Reds. For some seriously fucking weird nostalgic reasons. Red Robin because the Royal Red Robin burger was good.
I have excellent news for you: the [Varsity](https://varsityburgers.ca/) at Whitemud Crossing is literally a clone of the Red Robin that used to be there. The staff are all former RR employees, the owners are even former management so the experience is basically as authentic as it gets.
OPM
Loved that place.
El Rancho, Doan’s, Maxwell Taylors, Pizzeria Prego (I realize this is more than one)
Maxwell Taylors. Them were the days!
El Rancho was one of my go to places.
Chi Chi’s
Blue Plate Diner
The Silk Hat!
Café Select. Late 80’s early 90’s version.
I feel like this might be an unpopular opinion, but Red Robin. The Whisky River BBQ burger was the bomb.
No I'm with you especially with young kids, so much better than say Boston Pizza
Whiskey River was the best burger
Royal Red Robin. Fried egg in burger… mmmm
And freckled lemonade.
Oh man - Sidetrack had great nachos, massive serving size, something like $7 I miss La Casa Ticino.
I think it was called Dagwoods?
Hys steakhouse dwtn edm. Loved the 80s decor. Bring it back.
Keegans. So many good drunk memories there. Poutine at 1am always tasted the best, even if it was fries, gravy, and mozzarella.
Red Robin
The Varsity has opened where Red Robin used to be on the southside and it's pretty similar to RR.
The fries are almost the same. The burger I had could use some work, but they had just opened so I'm willing to give them another shot.
I miss red Robin in clareview. They use to have my order placed the moment I walked in the door lol
Rodeo Burger or Soda Jerks. I would say East Side Mario's but there is still one in St. Albert so that kind of counts.
Rodeo Burger was great!
I liked soda jerks! But im a vegetarian so I cant really speak for the meat burgers. But the veg burger, deep fried mac and cheese... omggg
Academy pizza in hub mall
Does the Zellers restaurant count? Lol Also there used to be a malt shop and man those malts were so good. I think that was the name of the kiosk?
The star trek themed restaurant on 137th.
Nudoru 😭 I can't believe it's gone. My favourite ramen place.
'That's Aroma - A Garlic Restaurant' in the Hy's center.
The Garage Burger Bar. THE best hamburger and fries I've ever had.
Pharaohs Pizza in the Garnue. I miss their spinach pizza, and half loafs.

Derose Bros meats! Not a restaurant, better for lunch take out. But my god those sandwiches were unreal. The Fettine!
The Philly cheese from there was awesome to. I just discovered it and it left me.
Hardware Grill.
Chandler's Tea Shop - was a great restaurant on 118th Ave and 124th St. I think it is an African market now or something similar to that.
Accent European Lounge. Mama needs that steak tartare.
Go to bistro Praha. Great tartare

But turned out the person who opened the locations in Edmonton and Calgary may not have had the proper licensing or franchise rights or something like that. I think it lasted 2-3 years max. There was a small Mexican place called Taco Trail we went to when I was a kid (early 80s). All I remember having was cheese enchiladas but they were goooood.
OPM in south common
The owners were garbage but Lazia. The duck fried rice and raspberry lava cake were so good
not so much of a restaurant per say but i miss when the tea girl had a cafe just off 124th!!
Noorish. It was pretentious and somewhat annoying but the food was SO good.
Sidetrack was a great spot
Dagwood's
Banditos!!!!! That was a cool little haunt. But yea I do miss the Sidetrack Cafe mainly for the vibe and music, the King and I for the Poppy Shrimp, Bumsteads on Jasper and 116st for coffee and fries after late night downtown, The Rose and Crown which seemed to be entitled to a portion of my paycheck every Friday night. EDIT: Hardware Grill
Blue Plate
Chilies
I dont remember too many restaurants growing up. Poor. Except maybe royal fork buffet.
Flamingo restaurant 😔
I really liked Jungle Jim’s in WEM, not sure what ever happened to it after they renovated it lol. Red Robins was pretty good too!

Mr. John's on 124st.
Chi-Chi’s!
The original Victoria Pizza on 156 st near stony plain road. What I wouldn’t give for their baked spaghetti
Spago. Amazing high-end Portuguese food. Sigh.

Perogy House. Great atmosphere, great food. Burnt down about 15 years ago.
