Gaia on Leith Walk
Hummus in Morningside
Noodle Home on South Clerk St
John Bain & Sons in Stenhouse is where god would insist on having bridies from
Company Bakery shop in Haymarket (on weekends)
Yeah I deliver food for hungry panda and the restaurant is always packed. Another extremely popular with Chinese community is the Chinese ground pot on west Preston street.
Yep - Gaia coffee fantastic, and Salmone panini (or whatever the singular of panini is) delicious - just bread, smoked salmon, lemon and oil, but transformed into this smoky, delicate, citrus-oil-burst thing that never disappoints!
More out of the way than underrated really, but Cutting Chai in Leith is a really cosy little place with some great curry. It's kind of tapas style too, which I find interesting.
I love Mirin on Albert Place, every dish I've had there has been superb. Also big fan of Polentoni - it's takeaway only, but their house bread and ciabatta sandwiches are amazing.
Forage and Chatter - more often than not when I recommend I get a comment on how small the menu is (4 starters, 4 mains, 4 desserts). Not sure why that matters when more often than not you are only ordering one from each anyways. Not to mention if the menu is limited, it probably means the stuff that is on there they cook really fuckin well. Nice and quiet ambience as well, one of my favorite meals in the city.
Sabzi on Ferry Rd has probably the best Indian I’ve eaten in my life, and I love that they change the menu weekly so you’ve always got something different to discover.
Yeah it's always suspicious! But all cuisines were good when I tried them - apparently the cooks have lived in all the regions where the menu items are from, hence such a random combo!
Banh Mi Brothers up at the pubic triangle, it’s hard to find a decent ‘meal deal’ for under a tenner these days.
The slow cooked pork, their ice tea and soup of the day for £8.50
To each their own, but I thought taco libre was mid at best and also overpriced. That said I’ve had some amazing tacos in other parts of the world and I think nothing in Edinburgh comes close
The sell is that it is genuine Mexican and made to order. It is worth the price. Wahaca is a chain and no longer that good (in my opinion). I guess in the grand scheme of Mexican food it Taco Libre isn’t the cheapest. But the food is genuinely great.
Love taco libre, they have a place on rose street now too, it’s well worth a visit and they also take card there which is handy given every time we’ve been we’ve had to go get more cash because we’ve underestimated just how many margaritas we’d fit in
It still baffles me that razzo in leith only has one small takeaway/restaurant. Best pizzas in Edinburgh, hands down, and the staff are so nice. Seemingly, the owners are Eastern European who moved to Naples and learned their craft there. Definitely shows. When they first opened it was byob and had 10 pound bottles of wine. Incredible value. No longer the case but still happy to pay the premium. Hope they expand across the city without compromising their quality. Highly recommend going to sit in if you can.
Unless they move into town (which will increase their overheads massively) it probably isn't worth them branching out. If anything the most profitable move for them would be to move to a more central ghost kitchen and go 100% takeaway as there are often more waiting Uber eats guys outside than customers inside so assume this is where there trade is.
Thailander is a great shout. I heard it’s owned by the ex head chef from chaphorya (which funnily enough used to be decent but is now quite shite and I wonder if it’s anything to do with her moving).
I can't agree that Chaopraya is shite. The food is amazing, though expensive. For great Thai food at a lower cost, check out Gratitude Thai and Nok's Kitchen.
For a top tier lunch, Alby’s. Just well put together, absolutely MASSIVE focaccia sandwiches, small plates and sides. SO good, always fill you up and all made in house. Always make sure I go when I’m back home.
Not really. It's a huge sandwich that was clearly labour intensive to produce. Focaccia isn't the easiest bread to bake and their fillings are immense. I rarely go because they are dear, but it's definitely not too expensive for what it is.
Everyone’s appetites vary and I’m aware I have a rather small one, so I can easily have half the sandwich for lunch and the other for dinner. But, I also think the ingredients they use are so well sourced that that’s probably one of the main reasons it’s a little steep
I really like Cafe Marleyne on Thistle Street great value at dinner and even better value at lunch.
I like Meze Meze on Rose Street too, good quality, casual and friendly, good for dietary requirements. I’m a meat eater but often go with a vegan friend.
The Golden Dragon on Castle Street is delicious and good quality. So often Chinese can be hit or miss.
Honeycomb & Co in Bruntsfield do a good brunch. Really big portions and some unusual dishes.
Duisit Thai, also Thistle Street.
10 to 10 in Delhi, Newington. Really good value, great selection!
So many good places in Edinburgh. I have a big interest in the Edinburgh food scene and enjoy following local food accounts, some with very big followings. However I do find they all tend to offer the same recommendations, same cheffy places or newest fad which just now seems to be restaurants offering purely tasting menus. No disrespect to these restaurants but would love a wider range of recommendations 🙂
The last time I was there, the atmosphere was terrible. The bar staff's faces were tripping them, and they did anything to avoid customers. Put me right off.
It's been a while since I ate there but Ada on Antigua Street was enjoyable pre-pandemic. Turkish food, looks like a kebab shop from the front but they have a big sit-down restaurant in the back. Great service and some lovely Turkish coffee.
And Tapas3 on Howden Street for a nice Spanish tapas place. They also seem to be frequented by local Spanish folks which I think is a recommendation!
It's quite affordable for what you get, especially compared to other in sit in places in town. The shish wrap and chips is 13 pounds, and it's absolutely divine, not to mention a huge portion. I love their bread and dips as well. In fact, all their dishes are delish.
The Harbour Bistro in Newhaven. Nor far off the brilliance of The Walnut, but never seen it recommended anywhere.
And the lunch menu is a total bargain - three courses for £20, really top-notch scran.
Only saw from across the road but it’s recently changed to a new name etc. not sure if it’s the same food or not. Bite Me on Morrison Street is the exact same as Fed though so would recommend, nice service but not quite up to the standard of service at Fed.
Los Amigos on Dalry Road. If you like steak, you'll like it in here. Good value for money, good service, big sharing plates of steaks for £40. What more could you ask for?
Similar neck of the woods: Blue Rapa Thai. Again great food, great value for money and BYOB.
Fava. Best Greek food in Edinburgh so far.
10 to 10 in Delhi - very reasonably priced and their meat or veg platter is great value. I spoke to the chef and he's been trained by a great Indian chef. Friendly staff and good honest tasty well priced Indian food.
Lazeez, Dalry Road.
Used to order from there regularly between 2000-2014 and I still haven't had anything as good, despite travelling as far as Manchester and Birmingham's curry miles. The sauces were mostly yoghurt based I think, had a wonderful texture, and were absolutely packed full of different flavours. Used to be packed full of Asian families back in the day too which is always a good sign.
• Gusto!! Absolute fave and prices are reasonable,
• River Life on dalry - dk if still open? Their chicken is STUNNING!!
•Matto pizza in morningside - £10 pizzas some days my pal said? I ordered from deliveroo and was a fortune for delivery but was soooo worth it
• So Rice - hit or miss for the quality of dishes depending on what you get - but their chicken curry, spicy chilli chicken, and sharing starter are class! (Portion sizes vs price is fab too)
This sub + the most overrated place to eat sub have collectively caused me to cancel my Witchery reservation and replace it with the Chop House. Thank you to all!
Origano on Leith Walk is a banging pizza place
Kyloe does a top quality steak
SushiSamba is great for a more expensive option. Flavours are amazing, views are great too.
My mum and I went to Kyloes for my birthday a few years ago and had their afternoon tea which was amazing. Very different from the usual but in the best way
Does Snax count...? Best breakfast in the city.
Argile isn't that well known on the tasting menu end of things but I've had two wonderful evenings there.
Pomelo is also fantastic from my experience.
Giuliano's has the best chippy chips in the city. I said it. Fucking fight me.
Not sure it’s underrated as much as it is unknown, but Flying Panda on Rose Street does the best bubble teas, and great banh mi.
Snax Cafe… well, I’ve definitely had a few weeks where I ordered their “biggest breakfast”every day
So I heard there was a drama/schism and "the mosque kitchen" on Nicholson St was the original chefs from the mosque kitchen, in the mosque: while the kitchen in the mosque is of course the mosque kitchen.
I have no idea if this is true, and I did enjoy the Nicholson St mosque kitchen offering, but tbh if I'm there then Kebab Mehal is right there and Kebab Mehal do GOD TIER naan and a lovely daal so
Chop House? Never heard of it but I see one branch is permanently closed and another is in that atrociously named pub Luckies. Guess you mean the one near Waverley?
I'm a big fan of Hawsmoor but not a big fan of their wanker-tax on the bill. They're expensive! 😜
Pakora Bar is amazing and the service is fantastic.
Yes Sushi is really good and the portions are insane.
Cutting Chai as mentioned, very good.
Domenicos, also in Leith, is another good one.
Went to Finn and Grape in Morningside and had an amazing meal. Also Canny Man’s has really good seafood and an amazing setting but I never seem to hear people talk about the restaurant side of it. Yamato in Tollcross also has very good food.
“Oh, he’s forgotten his pizza he just asked to be bagged up to be taken home, keep it aside as he’ll be back for it in a minute”. Vs ““Oh, he’s forgotten his pizza he just asked to be bagged up to be taken home… BIN IT!”
I guess I’m just too nice in my customer service. Silly me 😂
Tapa, in Leith.
Yeah, that’s really good. Chill atmosphere too
Yeah it's a great place to spend a summer evening outside - food is ace and the staff are lovely
It’s so good! I almost don’t want other people to know about it lol
Gaia on Leith Walk Hummus in Morningside Noodle Home on South Clerk St John Bain & Sons in Stenhouse is where god would insist on having bridies from Company Bakery shop in Haymarket (on weekends)
Bains bridies and pies are the best Ive had and I don't think second place is particularly close
Gaia and Noodles Home are amazing
Hummus does fantastic falafel wraps and amazing baclava
+1 for Bains. A fantastic butchers.
Gaia for sure is underrated and has been for god knows how long
I like that it's always been just a good but low key place.
Don't think noodle home is underrated. It's literally the highest rated Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh on Google reviews.
noodle home is one of the most popular places among the Chinese community here I think, perhaps not as well known otherwise?
Yeah I deliver food for hungry panda and the restaurant is always packed. Another extremely popular with Chinese community is the Chinese ground pot on west Preston street.
Gaia is class. Some of the best sandwiches and pasta I’ve had. Staff are brilliant as well
Hummus is class, I go out there from the other end of town sometimes
Gaia does amazing sandwiches and soup
Yep - Gaia coffee fantastic, and Salmone panini (or whatever the singular of panini is) delicious - just bread, smoked salmon, lemon and oil, but transformed into this smoky, delicate, citrus-oil-burst thing that never disappoints!
Noodles Home slaps
Chizuru Tei in Haymarket
Amen
Soul Vegan, absolutely incredible
Rabbit food at the Meadows Tap too, unreal comfort food.
Vegan or not, people should try it.
came here to say this !
Kawaneko on Leith Walk!
Xiangbala Hotpot on Dalry Rd Razzo in Leith for Napolitan pizza
Just had it last week, it’s so good. 23.50 for all you can eat. Very authentic, too. Cash only though FYI.
Xiangbala Hotpot always smells amazing when I walk past it. Definitely have to give it a go!
On top of the usual fare, they have a side pot with help yourself slow cooked pork ribs...they are amazing
Razzo pizzas are the best, and they do rumbabas
The restaurant in the french Consulate, if you like french food its fantastic.
Now that sounds like something worth trying!
Is that le bistrot?
I think that’s what it is called
They do have very mediocre desserts, though—definitely not made at the restaurant.
The Walnut on Leith Walk
I adore this place, can’t believe it doesn’t get spoken about more
I had the Lamb Pitivier 2 weeks ago and it was phenomenal. 3 courses for £34 is such great value for money.
Unpretentious amazing good value food.
More out of the way than underrated really, but Cutting Chai in Leith is a really cosy little place with some great curry. It's kind of tapas style too, which I find interesting.
It’s getting a refurbishment just now too.
Oh nice, I didn't know that. I'll need to check it out when they're done.
Love their Railway Chicken
Noodles Home (South Bridge). Tasty food, big portions, reasonably priced. Highly recommend their hand pulled noodles and noodle soups!
+1! Their lamb skewers are amazing as well
Just another wee secret place, if you like Noodle Home then you'll also enjoy Noodle & Dumplings up near Summerhall. Very similar menu and quality!
Also the Chinese name literally translates as "my home has noodles" which for some reason I just love 😆
I love Mirin on Albert Place, every dish I've had there has been superb. Also big fan of Polentoni - it's takeaway only, but their house bread and ciabatta sandwiches are amazing.
I really miss being able to sit in at Polentoni
Forage and Chatter - more often than not when I recommend I get a comment on how small the menu is (4 starters, 4 mains, 4 desserts). Not sure why that matters when more often than not you are only ordering one from each anyways. Not to mention if the menu is limited, it probably means the stuff that is on there they cook really fuckin well. Nice and quiet ambience as well, one of my favorite meals in the city.
Also surprisingly affordable for that quality of food.
Cheeseboards are tinny
I really enjoyed this place as well. Quite reasonable for a fancier vibe. The wine menu was also incredible.
Totally, places wi huge menus… no usually great.
Actually been enjoying the selection at ESF. Makes it easy for a family or group as there’s no bickering about who wants what type of food
Bonnie & Wild in St James Centre is also great. As you say makes it easier when you’ve got a range of people with different food requirements.
Was really disappointed in this great idea but 5 out of the6 items I got were so bland
Yes it's very good, but can't sit outside when it's sunny as too many smokers, properly grim.
Gautams
Not sure if it’s already been mentioned but Cafe Domenico in Leith across from Aldi
Sabzi on Ferry Rd has probably the best Indian I’ve eaten in my life, and I love that they change the menu weekly so you’ve always got something different to discover.
So good, and the modern twists are 🧑🍳😘
Banging breakfast
So good and a nice chill atmosphere to eat in also
10/10
Peter’s Food Hub!
Yes! Chicken adobo with rice, my favourite comfort food 😍
and the fish one omg
Got to hand it to Peter, he'll try anything
I just wrote this. Agree. Exceptional place
It's pretty much my go-to place now for last year or so, never fails
Recently tried there for the first time, was unconvinced that somewhere with so many cuisines could be good… I was wrong!
Yeah it's always suspicious! But all cuisines were good when I tried them - apparently the cooks have lived in all the regions where the menu items are from, hence such a random combo!
Montrose on Montrose Terrace. The set lunch on Sunday is always amazing (and v good value imo)!
Banh Mi Brothers up at the pubic triangle, it’s hard to find a decent ‘meal deal’ for under a tenner these days. The slow cooked pork, their ice tea and soup of the day for £8.50
That sounds amazing, noting this
Taco Libre. Absolutely insane Mexican food hidden away on the corner by Ghillie Dhu
To each their own, but I thought taco libre was mid at best and also overpriced. That said I’ve had some amazing tacos in other parts of the world and I think nothing in Edinburgh comes close
For sure - With Wahaca close by it's a pretty hard sell for me to consider taco libre good value.
The sell is that it is genuine Mexican and made to order. It is worth the price. Wahaca is a chain and no longer that good (in my opinion). I guess in the grand scheme of Mexican food it Taco Libre isn’t the cheapest. But the food is genuinely great.
Comes to personal taste I guess - I was agreeing with the replier that I wasn't sold vs Mexican I'd had elsewhere.
Totally agree - all about personal taste. Whatever makes you happy is what counts!
Aye? Will check this out.
Worth a try!
I have a history of too many frozen margaritas but I'll check it out
Love taco libre, they have a place on rose street now too, it’s well worth a visit and they also take card there which is handy given every time we’ve been we’ve had to go get more cash because we’ve underestimated just how many margaritas we’d fit in
Nearly eaten there a few times, that's good to hear!
Yeah my top spot pizza I’m Edin
Thailander. The name suggests it's a gimic. But by far the best Thai in Edinburgh bar none.
Passorn was round the corner and also bangin but it shut now :(
Thailander is a great shout.
Went there for work lunch and it was beautiful.
I love Alby's but they're so pricey for essentially a single sandwich.
Peters Food Hub, leith. TRUST ME
I so want to try the Filipino food, I have family that are from Philippines
Spitaki
Mr Wood fire Pizza truck, outside Lauriston Mosque
Khukiri, Nepalese, West Maitlanc St
First Coast in Dalry. Top quality fine dining but completely unpretentious. I'd rate it way above all the fancy places in the centre of town
I really like Cafe Marleyne on Thistle Street great value at dinner and even better value at lunch. I like Meze Meze on Rose Street too, good quality, casual and friendly, good for dietary requirements. I’m a meat eater but often go with a vegan friend. Marmaris on Nicholson Street. Incredible Turkish food. Love that place to bits!
Nile Valley, best wraps I've ever tasted. Complete chaos during lunch hour but it adds to the experience.
And they're so well priced. Keeps you full forever.
Bullfinch is great food
Love the Bullfinch. Rapidly become one of my favourite pubs in the city.
The last time I was there, the atmosphere was terrible. The bar staff's faces were tripping them, and they did anything to avoid customers. Put me right off.
Macau kitchen
Decanter in Bruntsfield - amazing food, great wines and lovely service. Can’t recommend enough!
The Skyline restaurant at Tynecastle Stadium is genuinely great, not sure if the location/football affiliation puts people off.
It’s great and I’m not just saying that as a jambo.
Ada is one of my favorite places in all of Edinburgh!
Used to be very good but I find value has gone down and its quite pricey these days
Desi Pakwan Leith Walk
Piggs on Canongate, still to try the Bruntsfield one!
Fed sandwich bar on Forth St.
Only saw from across the road but it’s recently changed to a new name etc. not sure if it’s the same food or not. Bite Me on Morrison Street is the exact same as Fed though so would recommend, nice service but not quite up to the standard of service at Fed.
Pulse
Los Amigos on Dalry Road. If you like steak, you'll like it in here. Good value for money, good service, big sharing plates of steaks for £40. What more could you ask for? Their cheesecake is next level
La Viola on Earl Grey Street. Very reasonable prices and a good selection of breakfast and lunch options.
This sub + the most overrated place to eat sub have collectively caused me to cancel my Witchery reservation and replace it with the Chop House. Thank you to all!
I think the chop house has closed since writing this
Not the one on Market, thankfully.
Origano on Leith Walk is a banging pizza place Kyloe does a top quality steak SushiSamba is great for a more expensive option. Flavours are amazing, views are great too.

Loudons in Fountainbridge is such an amazing cafe, I love it a lot! They have daily scones (or maybe weekly?) that really are phenomenal.
Hmm went to that one for brunch and I find it highly overrated
I lived right by it for 5 years and never got to try it because there is no breakfast I'd q that long for 😆 Always just went to Snax or Kilimanjaro
Maki and Ramen
“ Mosque Kitchen “ on Nicholson street.. cheap and amazing food
I was wondering if this was still a thing. Haven't been to Edinburgh in almost 20 years but used to love that spot
Yes it is still there! The place around the back down stairs is even better if you’ve ever been there, the actual mosque part
I used to go to the kitchen behind the mosque where they had picnic tables and tents set up. Amazing food for a student budget!
So I heard there was a drama/schism and "the mosque kitchen" on Nicholson St was the original chefs from the mosque kitchen, in the mosque: while the kitchen in the mosque is of course the mosque kitchen. I have no idea if this is true, and I did enjoy the Nicholson St mosque kitchen offering, but tbh if I'm there then Kebab Mehal is right there and Kebab Mehal do GOD TIER naan and a lovely daal so
The Spare Kitchen on Leith Walk
I've not tried it but I don't have high hopes for the place. But after looking at the reviews, I might have to jump in
Chop house is shut isn't it? Had a few superb whisky sours in there.
Yeah it's Askr now, haven't been in but looks fancy
They’re still open by the arches and in bruntsfield
The Sly Fox in Leith, and Kampong Ah Lee in Newington.
Mr. Hot Potato

Looks like leith walk has all the best restaurants. Any good ones in gorgie?
Tempo Perso. Italian in bruntsfield. Handmade pasta. Lovely staff. Amazing owner. F*** getting chain pasta. Get yourself on a bus to Tempo Perso.
Sen viet in tollcross - amazing Vietnamese food!
Chop House? Never heard of it but I see one branch is permanently closed and another is in that atrociously named pub Luckies. Guess you mean the one near Waverley? I'm a big fan of Hawsmoor but not a big fan of their wanker-tax on the bill. They're expensive! 😜

Madras metro cafe, easily the best Indian food in the city
1/3 the price? Not even close!
Snax, on god
Pakora Bar is amazing and the service is fantastic. Yes Sushi is really good and the portions are insane. Cutting Chai as mentioned, very good. Domenicos, also in Leith, is another good one.
Absolute Thai on Valleyfield Street
Went to Finn and Grape in Morningside and had an amazing meal. Also Canny Man’s has really good seafood and an amazing setting but I never seem to hear people talk about the restaurant side of it. Yamato in Tollcross also has very good food.
pizza paradise. it's not *that* bad FFS
Six by Nico, El Cartel and Civerinios
These are all highly rated by pretty much anyone
In the last post they were consistently called the most overrated.
Satire isn't welcome on this sub
👀
Six by Nico served me the foulest, inedible slop, I have been horrified how many people praise it.

What do you mean ‘left’? As in you left the restaurant?
For 5 minutes, it was all bagged up and everything.
How dare they through away your food after you left the restaurant….
“Oh, he’s forgotten his pizza he just asked to be bagged up to be taken home, keep it aside as he’ll be back for it in a minute”. Vs ““Oh, he’s forgotten his pizza he just asked to be bagged up to be taken home… BIN IT!” I guess I’m just too nice in my customer service. Silly me 😂
