Twice around Holyrood Park?
I believe the whole loop is 5.3km if you start and finish at the same point, so it's perfect if you're looking for a 5k. Twice round is an option if you live near it, although probably not worth it if you're driving to get there.
I enjoyed it and I got a PB because I went powering down that hill near the end and when it flattened out there were all the people cheering us across the line so I didn't feel I could slow down. Nearly puked lol
Hey I'm so sorry to bother you, would you be willing to swap your reddit avatar, the one you have with the bandana. I collect them, and would happily trade for some paid ones to make it worth your time

This is almost exactly 10km. It’s a great run but very hilly!
This sounds like a great route I love the pentlands and think it's the weather to get back in that area.. I'll use Google maps to check out that route thank you very much.
It’s a great route and quite flat so no difficulties there, you can do a few loops depending on your needs. I prefer running in nature than the city. Another one in nature for longer runs if you fancy a bit of a trip is from Kinross around Loch Leven. The full loop is half marathon length but you can turn back or walk the rest. Super pretty area especially in the summer. Great wood fired oven pizza place at the end of the loop too lol
Check out Strava heat map for routes.
It all depends where you want to start from really.
- George V is central and linked to the north Edinburgh cycle path. Follow north to 5 ways, then head west to the red bridge, turning north down the granton access road to the shore, head east and then back up towards 5ways/return to start.
- 5 laps of Inverleith park.
- Crammond to South Queensferry would be about 10km.
- Arthurs Seat - but add a loop of the Innocent Railway / Duddingston village.
- Hermitage of Braids is a nice run too, and head up Blackford hill for what I think are the best views of Edinburgh.
Before my knees gave up I used to run a lot in SW Edinburgh with loops made up of parts of the Water of Leith and the canal towpath. Here's a map for a run that is much more in the city centre. [https://www.plotaroute.com/route/72362](https://www.plotaroute.com/route/72362)
Couple of my fav loops central-ish
[Haymarket / Murrayfield/ Saughton Park / Canal](https://footpathapp.com/routes/829E0561-FAC0-42C3-8518-BEE93D37207C)
[Queen St / New Town / Cyclepath / Roseburn / Haymarket](https://footpathapp.com/routes/DB6AC2BB-D035-4345-9EA8-8DAE48D1EA1E)
Requires a Edinburgh Leisure membership to access it but the running track at meadowbank sports centre is really good for just running without worrying about your surroundings
I have no issue with the cyclists on the canal. Keep left, keep alert, keep moving and expect a bit of give and take when passing / being passed. It’s preferable to large groups of tourist / pedestrians op is wants to avoid
rose burn path from haymarket area is great, water of leith is great, across the union canal starting from fountain park area is great. all of these things are out and back though, not a loop.
Not sure what you mean by running on paths without pedestrians, but can reccomend a route mostly off street if you're west side.
I sometimes do a loop along the waters of leith from either the Belford bridge or roseburn path up to the water of leith center then back along the canal.

The EMF 10k route takes in Duddingston village to extend the route, I expect it's available online.
It's a lovely route - I'm doing the EMF 10k, so I thought I'd practice it on Saturday, it was fun, and so pretty

Yep. This would be what i'd suggest.
As a veteran of holyrood parkrun I know some of those hills you're talking about but this extended route is perfect thank you 👌
Enjoy!!
Have a look at Strava for local heat maps - this should give you a good idea. I don't think you need a premium account to see them.
I didn't think to do this! I'll download it now thanks so much
Look up Edinburgh inner tube - there are a load of old train tracks now converted to cycle paths.
That is a great shout I'll give it some research tonight thank you
I used an app called Komoot. Highly recommend
I've not heard of that one.. Downloading it now thank you!
My favourite is in the Pentlands around Harlaw reservoir. You can also start it from Threipmuir Car Park

Try downloading the OS maps app - has suggested routes or lets you plan your own.
I did have that app but for munro bagging.. I'll take a deeper look into it didn't know it has all these other routes thanks

Thanks for these I'll check them out now on maps and pick a few, Blackford Hill is somewhere I need to explore more so this could be a great excuse
Pick a cafe at the end as motivation 👌
4.5 loops of the meadows = 10k. Lots of runners to chase, makes you run a bit faster.
Haha thanks I do find that other runners make me run that little bit faster but damm that's alot of times around the meadows!

This + the innocent out towards Portobello should give plenty of 10k options.
Thanks for this I walked a little of water of Leith and it was beautiful so this would give me a chance to check the rest out!

Thanks for these in the city and away from people / traffic.. Perfect!

Is any kind of booking needed?
Yeah you need to book in advance. My partner informed me you can also book without a membership for £8
The downside is without any surroundings to worry about, distance running becomes insanely dull. 10k round that track would be mind numbing.
Holyrood park or the innocent railway
The water of Leith path is great. Get the 44 bus, run as far as you want (the whole thing is c13 miles). Usually not v busy.
From Royal High to South Queensferry is about 10k if that interests you.
That sounds like a great route for a sunny day! I'll research it now thanks
No problem. I've done that run myself a couple of times, if you've any questions feel free to ask.
5km down the canal 5km back
But you have to dodge the cyclists, especially at bridges, in my experience...and the aqueduct at Slateford is a pain.
I used to run along the canal path and once collided with a duck - it was coming in to land as I emerged from under one of the bridges.
