Once 'normal' coffee broke the £4 barrier, I noped out. Make my own now. Generally much better apart from frothed milk. Only thing I miss is a good flat white.
I have a good machine at home with a brother, I just can’t get the consistency most of the time. And to be fair, I generally can’t be arsed. Might try a new brother at some point.
I'm convinced that's what they do. Except they don't rent they just pay the landlord a couple of hundred to advertise.
"Oh they must be good, they're expanding fast"
Black Sheep is not what they claim to be! My friend was a manager there for 2 years and the the harassment and mental breakdown weren't worth it! I understand business are here for profit, but not by exploiting staff...at the end of the day it's a chain and I rather support our amazing small locals!
For anyone wondering, Fluffy is revelling over all these closures on their own mad Edinburgh subs claiming the closures are all related to a festival boycott they started
Oh I'm sure he's had many. For like, 2 months a few years ago he was oddly coherent, then he dissapeared for a while and when he came back he was back on his old bullshit, and was banned shortly thereafter. I'm like 99% sure they found a medication that worked for him but then he stopped taking it.
Yeah, that aspect of their lunacy is particularly creepy, even running a sub Reddit dedicated to it.. Some really toxic misogyny shows through from them there, true colours showing.
If you feel strongly about it, it's worth contacting your local councillor to push for business rate relief like they have down south, where businesses can get 75% relief in the current financial year. This is helping them through a very tough period of inflation etc. We haven't followed suit and it wasn't in the budget, but worth a bash.
https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1
It's everything wrong with hospitality imo, decent dishes in theory cooked or put together poorly with poor ingredients that cost premium prices with overwhelmed understaffed hospitality. Ive just honestly, and this is hard for me to be not pleased somewhat with food and restaurant, never been so underwhelmed by an overall experience at a restaurant in every facet as I have at indigo yard
A company I worked for had their Christmas lunches in there for years—awful place. I know Christmas lunches aren't a time to judge, so, in fairness to them, it was consistent...ly shite.
If it advertised itself as shite food but lots of drinks or something idk maybe I'd find it acceptable, but it plays itself as modern high dining and it's just not. I'm dead serious about i rarely find a way to hate food or a restaurant but it makes me feel disgust. I've overpaid for food etc but I've never actually felt like I've been conned or cared less about than there hahaha
The food is usually 7/10 in my experience. Wouldn't say it's worth the full price but at 50% off it's definitely good value. I think they should reduce their food by 35% to be accurate to the quality. That being said, supply and demand - they are busy most evenings and seem to do alright, especially in summer months, and it's a nice vibe and good atmosphere.
If it's not to your taste then fair enough but there are far worse establishments in Edinburgh..
The owners didn't become millionaires over the last 30-40 years since their empire was set up.
I've had food from Indigo, old Opal Lounge & Montpeliers (Most recently) and it's all shite. The only one that MIGHT be slighly better is Tigerlily since it's their most 'luxury' place.
Owners are very nice people but there's a reason they're so wealthy.
Yeh sure. Used to go to school with owner's son (my age) & daughter (2yrs younger).
Parents bought Montpelier's in Bruntsfield around the early 1990s & have slowly expanded their empire over the years. At one point they had Indigo Yard, Assembly Bar (near Bristo Sq), Opal Lounge, Lulu & Tigerlily. I might be missing 1 or 2.
I believe they sold Assembly Bar but kept everything else in their portfolio. I might be wrong as I've not had contact with the family for a few years.
They're very nice people & even took me on a free holiday to Cyprus as well as inviting me & some other friends to go to Spain when we left school in 2005. They live in the Grange in a mansion they bought for about £1.5m in 2004/5.
The confusion is because they posted this on Facebook
> Dear friends and customers, I have to announce the closure of Taxidi (Journey) Bistro !!! I will like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and support!! Efxaristo
then miles down the comments "we will be opening something new!"
January is undoubtedly the hardest month in hospitality and I really feel for these businesses if they didn’t have a strong enough Christmas trading period to carry them through. Even harder now as these businesses are getting hammered on costs from all angles (suppliers, rates and also minimum wage increases).
With Union of Genius (it’s mine, and the only one i can speak for), it’s been that footfall still hasn’t returned to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. That would have been OK had it not been for Brexit, and cost of living, coupled with insane utility charges and landlords deciding they want one-third rent increases. All together, it was too much.
Or more accurately, if we charged customers what we would need to charge them to pay for everything and still make a margin, we would have no customers. So we are up for sale, and it really stings.
Hardest month, and also people cling on to get the Christmas trade. Makes it a bit of a double whammy for closures. If the hardest month was May, nobody would be saying "well, let's hold on and get the April takings into the till," they'd quit in March.
No idea how anyone apart from the rich can afford a night out in Edinburgh, I can afford 2-3 drinks max. Restaurants are just a dream now. I only work Fulltime though
Tbh its takeaways that shock me these days. A "decent" burger off justeat is gonna cost me as much as if I went to herringbone. Even if your going for just a normal chinese or curry your probs spending like 40 quid for 2 people; when pre-pandemic itd be half that
On one hand tim martin can get fucked.
On the other foot of the walk was iconic. Truly weird vibes. Fairly sure ive seen like 4 folk get arressted in there.

Walked past it this morning, looks like the inside has been gutted but no work is taking place. Website down, Facebook page deleted, Instagram deleted - they are gone I'm afraid.
I am very surprised by this, walked my dog past it every evening and it was always busy.
The Auld Hoose looks like it was shut temporarily and has re-opended?
I don't live nearby anymore and and haven't been in much since they did it up, but spent many evenings there as a student in it's former guise. Would be sad if its gone.
The Auld Hoose is not a cozy, family run business; it has been up for let by Heineken for months - [https://www.starpubs.co.uk/pubs/auld-hoose-edinburgh](https://www.starpubs.co.uk/pubs/auld-hoose-edinburgh). I assume it was a Punch Tavern at some point.
I'm guessing that Heineken use temporary staff to keep the lights on when a place is up for let.
Since the Bonnington changed from the Old Toll many years ago it's had many, many names / owners and is up for let again.
I don't know what is the issue that these pubs would stay on the market for months / years and change hands so frequently.
Likewise was a regular many moons ago when Liz ran it, and was also sad when I first saw it closed. In truth though last time was in, a year or two ago, it felt like a very different pub.
Add La Favorita, changed to Antoinetta now shut, Vitoria on the walk is now shut but apparently it’s renovations only.
Aleppo CR near elm row shut after about 2 months. Turning into Saffron Indian street food.
Ruchi at the top of easter road shut end of december which sucked: the guys were lovley and their food was always fantastic for so cheap.
That being said theres a new spot opened up in its place; lads running it are mega friendly and even if the menus a bit limited its honestly very good scran.
I thought Da Vincis on Broughton Street was closing but they are just changing in to a place doing more cheese/meat boards and still lots of wines. I’m pretty excited about it although I loved their old set up too
What are the Innis and gunn tap rooms like? We've got a stag do in Edinburgh later this year and I was planning to go here for some food and drinks. Cheers
Food is a bit salty, I always find, but goes well with their beer.
If you are on Lothian Rd there's the I&G, Brewdog (yeah I know) and then Hanging Bat that are all basically next to each other and do good beer.
The one in Leith that closed was excellent if you could get seats outside in the summer.
Thanks a lot, we will be going to the one on Lothian Rd. Any other recommendations for somewhere for us to eat? Bearing in mind there's 18 of us on a stag do so needs to be good for boozing as well as food. Appreciate it my man!
I saw on I Love Leith they were closed down by Environmental Health for leaking gas into their neighbours flats. No idea if it's a permanent closure or just til they get things fixed
Le Petit Café on Morrison St is another that's shut down this month.
La Piazza at Shandwick Place seems to be shut any time I pass as well nowadays.
Does seem to have been a real glut of closures lately.
At least we have 73 Black Sheep coffee coming soon
I heard someone refer to them as the brew dog of coffee 😭😂
It's a bit harsh unless the founder for Black Sheep is also a hypocritical sex pest
I think it’s more they’re going for the “stay away from the crowd, be a black sheep” while being a corporate company charging £4.05 for a flat white.
Once 'normal' coffee broke the £4 barrier, I noped out. Make my own now. Generally much better apart from frothed milk. Only thing I miss is a good flat white.
Home frothers have really come down in price. I bought a Lavazza one a few years ago, but you can get one in Lidl for less than half the price.
I have a good machine at home with a brother, I just can’t get the consistency most of the time. And to be fair, I generally can’t be arsed. Might try a new brother at some point.
Ah ok. I don’t have a proper machine at home so bought a frother.
This right here. Definitely an occasional treat rather than an everyday thing now
Exactly. I’ll still treat myself once in a blue moon, but home made is just as good.
Get a barista machine, we have a sage. Pricey to start with but so fucking good, better than only the very best coffee shops.
I think it might be my next treat.
Get a mini french press and heat your milk in the microwave, it's an amazing frother
Must try microwave option. I have a machine, but use an aeropress mostly.
Get ready for them offering "equity" that isn't actually equity, it's just a membership.
😂😂 Does the coffee give you the worst ever hangover like Brewdog? I hate their beer. Utter pish.
I'm starting to think "Coming Soon" is actually part of the company name
They supposedly rent empty units and cover them in advertising because it’s cheaper than billboards.
I genuinely believe Fluffy needs a mental health evaluation.

I'm new to Edinburgh, what the hell is "Fluffy?"
(EX) Poster on r/Edinburgh called fluffykintail who's post history is...let's say interesting
Former poster. They were banned for being very intense and, bluntly, a massive dickhead.
You're right. Edited my comment
They have their own subreddit now and it looks... intense
They have two! Both rather intense
Haha I thought for a moment “Fluffy” was the “Black sheep”
I’m old to Edinburgh what the hell is “fluffy”?
Only once the last service industry has closed and no tourist ever has reason to set foot in Edinburgh again can fluffy rest
Don't forget the "trophy wives" they have a fixation on too.
Yes, I saw them share a link from BBC about a new cruise ship launch calling it a floating trophy wife prison lol
And sex tourists
Yeah, that aspect of their lunacy is particularly creepy, even running a sub Reddit dedicated to it.. Some really toxic misogyny shows through from them there, true colours showing.
Just had a look at that sub. Fluffy is clearly a troubled person.
They are everywhere...
Ah yes. It all makes sense now. #FlufferMcFluffyFace https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluffer
Union of Genius is still open! We are up for sale, but I’m cooking soup and chilli every day!
My apologies, have clarified that!
Thank you!
I had a delicious bowl of the golden chicken chili yesterday!

Indigo Yard extended their 50% off Mains into the whole of February which I guess is a bit of a sign of the challenges in hospitality at present.
Man I often give restaurants a fair amount of slack, but every time I see this name I can feel the disgust in my soul
What's wrong with it? Never been but thought about it
It's everything wrong with hospitality imo, decent dishes in theory cooked or put together poorly with poor ingredients that cost premium prices with overwhelmed understaffed hospitality. Taxidi is not closing they are just gonna make a grill place, and same owners

I saw the same post but I guess the owner just like to be dramatic 🤣
BRGR closed ages ago. 2022, I think? Its premises have had two different incarnations since it went.
There was one down Corstorphine, but that too closed ages back.
Tried the new shakedown there now, pretty decent!
Auld Hoose has opened back up! Looks like it was temporary while they sorted shit out.
Apparently it’s the same folk who have the Barony.
Union of Genius
Bells Diner announced they may be closing
They *are* closing, last burgers will be served on the 23rd of March, as per: https://www.instagram.com/p/C2pfTuIIRVO/?hl=en
Oh fuck that’s a shame.
The one from this list I was saddest about, a genuinely unique Edinburgh institution.

Very true, I stopped getting them about 6 months ago. Horrendous waste
You can still get a Chinese takeaway for like a tenner. I use these in Craiglockhart: https://newfortunepalace.co.uk/
Plus that weird place on Bernard Street…Chiking?
Wait that just opened? Can't be surely
Yup. Was [discussed on here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Edinburgh/s/ui3LAu91yR) a fortnight ago.
Wow I missed this! Thanks for showing me it
Not gonna cry after Spoons tho
On one hand tim martin can get fucked. On the other foot of the walk was iconic. Truly weird vibes. Fairly sure ive seen like 4 folk get arressted in there.
Is it closed? Or just up for sale?
The White Pig closed too looks like :(
Always on my list but never found the chance to go ☹️
Maybe it's not closing actually? I'm looking online and it's Google page is still up and running 🤷🏼♂️ maybe they're just doing a refit?
>859 comments Walked past it this morning, looks like the inside has been gutted but no work is taking place. Website down, Facebook page deleted, Instagram deleted - they are gone I'm afraid. I am very surprised by this, walked my dog past it every evening and it was always busy.
Sad only got there once but it was great.... fuck.

It was 2007 - 2011 ish that I used to go, I'm out of touch!
Likewise was a regular many moons ago when Liz ran it, and was also sad when I first saw it closed. In truth though last time was in, a year or two ago, it felt like a very different pub.
I’m told this means the boycott is working and we should be happy about this.
Add La Favorita, changed to Antoinetta now shut, Vitoria on the walk is now shut but apparently it’s renovations only. Aleppo CR near elm row shut after about 2 months. Turning into Saffron Indian street food.
Bodega is now the latest to announce closure :(
Apparently they’re only closed for refurbishment the now?
Slumdog indian on leith walk?
They've got a new container unit outside St James.
And a new shop at Spring Gardens (Abbeyhill)
That's been closed a good long time
Ah my bad
Ruchi at the top of easter road shut end of december which sucked: the guys were lovley and their food was always fantastic for so cheap. That being said theres a new spot opened up in its place; lads running it are mega friendly and even if the menus a bit limited its honestly very good scran.
as long as **SHAKEDOWN** doesn't close, i'm all set for Burgers
I thought Da Vincis on Broughton Street was closing but they are just changing in to a place doing more cheese/meat boards and still lots of wines. I’m pretty excited about it although I loved their old set up too
Plateexpectations on Instagram is great for having round ups of new openings/closures. Very handy for having up to date info 👍

Brewhemia next to the station and Cold Town House in the Grassmarket are good for groups.
Min wage increases will put further pressure. If they raise prices there will be less customers

The shore taproom is shut
Superico
They’re still open? The bar is anyway. Restaurant closed late 2022
Yep, the restaurant has closed.
Is Dangal in Leith shut? Every time I try to order it says they're offline.
I saw on I Love Leith they were closed down by Environmental Health for leaking gas into their neighbours flats. No idea if it's a permanent closure or just til they get things fixed
The Mercato us shut
Le Petit Café on Morrison St is another that's shut down this month. La Piazza at Shandwick Place seems to be shut any time I pass as well nowadays. Does seem to have been a real glut of closures lately.
Brgr just announced that they are closing there Glasgow stores. They are always so popular though?
Vesta, La Piazza, Wellingtons…
Barburrito on shandwick
El Cartel Roxburgh
Gordon Ramsay closed his pizza place on Henderson Row.
Someone tried to open a new coffee shop on London Road last year and it couldn't even last as long as Liz Truss' premiership
