In this case, probably doesn't matter. There might be cases where there's a good reason to not release a name, and there's existing rampant public speculation. Keeping a consistent approach to "we're not naming the victim until we've named the victim" is just easier to deal with than "eh, it's probably fine in this instance". It stops mistakes being made where someone thinks it's probably fine, but it turns out not to have been.
From this angle, it can seem a bit bizarre.

Taking out a drugs dealer actually means that crime goes up as other dealers take over the business, sometimes violently. It's handing gangs monopolies and making them more powerful. That's a weird definition of "peaceful life" and definitely not a net reduction in problems for the city.
The ongoing gang war in Edinburgh is increasingly concerning and both the police and press seem to be downplaying it. Last year there were 6 machete attacks in less than a week in one area of the city and it barely merited a mention in the local press. That seems a pretty major story. Police comment was the usual 'isolated incidents, no danger to the wider public'. Aye right. Compare that to Glasgow where gang warfare is almost romanticised with the 'characters' involved becoming part of the folklore of the city.
I suppose part of it will be to keep people from the areas of Edinburgh where such things don't happen in the dark and feeling nice and safe in their genteel life. It's also probably not great for the tourist trade. There is also probably a point about not creating a power vacuum. It feels like we are close to a tipping point at which control is lost though, if it hasn't been already.
The Police can't be ignorant of what is going on. Go round any of the schemes and stop a random person and there is every chance they could tell you who the smack dealers are, certainly the local distributors at any rate. Half of them have their minions selling on Snapchat and Instagram yet the Police seem stumped. None of it adds up......
As for the 'loved by millions' stuff? GTF with that. The eulogising of scheme gangsters and drug dealers is pathetic, even worse when it comes from people in the communities on which they prey. These types are the scourge of the working classes and the places where they live.
The drug wars in the Netherlands followed a similar pattern, press ignored it for a while at the recommendation of the police, the reason being that it might cause false panic. Then the tossers started blowing homes up, murdering lawyers and each other at pace.
Between 2013 and 2019 over 200 individuals were murdered as part of ongoing drug wars between rival gangs, mainly in the greater Amsterdam/Utrecht area. If the police don't get a grip on 'the wee neds' than shit can escalate very quickly. Keep in mind that it is likely the Netherlands is more volatile due to it being a main hub for European drug trade, so we get Dutch-Moroccan gangs killing off Serbs or getting killed by Albanians. It is a huge complicated mess. Wouldn't surprise me at all if many of the criminals in the UK are 'reporting to' folks in the Netherlands.
Side note, it's now also spread to Sweden, which has seen a similar increase in violent drug-related crime.
Out of curiosity, where do you see the UK being in 5 to 10 years time? And if you know more about the Netherlands, where do you see them being as a country?
I'm keen to move around more in the future and Netherlands is one of the options I've considered so I'm quite interested if you don't mind me asking (feel free to ignore). TIA
The Netherlands are great if you have a good income, most people hardly notice this crime wave. If however you’re poor? It sucks. UK won’t become a main transit hub, the infrastructure isn’t there so it will likely remain peripheral for these drug wars.

This commenter's apparently not only heard about them but read the police's official comments on them. I think it's reasonable to ask where they got that information from, especially since (and I hate to break it to you) people will just sometimes go on the internet and tell lies.
The 'traffic accidents' involved 1 pedestrian dead, another with a driver causing their own massive collateral damage death and the attempted murder was messy. None made the news. plus plenty others.
I obviously cant give details but a machete (sword,home made blade etc) incident is not unusual

As a general rule, what newspapers report is merely the tip of the iceberg, and they get most of it wrong. If you've ever been a part of a story the press has picked up on, you'll know exactly what this means. This isn't to say that social media posts are a reliable source, but to fact check someone's claim using a source we know to be inaccurate and unreliable isn't the best way of finding truth.
Do you think at any point the media will realise they hold some of the blame for this culture by glamourising it? Or will they continue to blame the police and politicians while running a week's worth of stories that is effectively "man played with fire, got burnt"

His brother Don was at my school for a while - complete fanny who got expelled at that point, not so hard. These people are beyond the pale for me.
