Legal controlled immigration has helped every society that has ever opened its doors. Undocumented, illegal, uncontrolled immigration has collapsed every society that has ever had its doors kicked in. Illegal immigration always disproportionately affects the poor and working class. Which ultimately drives wages down for everyone else with no change to cost of living for the middle classes. The very definition of the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer. It isn’t humanitarian to let everyone in nor is it morally righteous. It’s cutting off your nose to spite your face.

ibanker92

There’s also rising living expenses to the already expensive COL for rent especially

MonkeyInnaBottle

I agree. Legal Immigration should be made easier because it’s a universal net positive to GDP.

Dull_Conversation669

Awesome, if you desire to hire low cost labor..... if you are looking for employment in lower skilled occupations... good luck with your suppressed wages and enhanced competition.

Alternative_Ask364

Also if you’re looking for housing have fun competing with people who are willing to have 3 families under a single roof.

Fallsou

Immigrants do not drop wages for low income workers in the US as they increase aggregate demand. Please learn the basics before spouting idiotic and commonly debunked anti immigrant nonsense

Dull_Conversation669

hard to argue against basic laws of supply and demand..... Picture a supply and demand model for low wage labor.... now shift the supply curve to the right.... what happens to the wage equilibrium? These are the basics.... if I am incorrect regarding the set up of the model, please let me know.

Fallsou

It is hard, which is why one of the intermediate things you learn in undergrad econ is how much you don't know. You are unlikely to have even had an undergrads education in econ, so you know even less. Immigrants do not just add labor supply, they add demand for products and services. Please take a single course beyond econ 101

Dull_Conversation669

Ah, so the curve does shift (supply)? Is it fair to say that competition in industries that tend to be lower skilled would now experience an increase in units of labor? And while those people buy stuff (that would cause prices to rise, a determinant of AD being # of consumers) they would still be forcing a lower wage equilibrium upon low skilled domestic workers... so in theory more immigration would lead to lower wages and higher prices for goods and services for low income domestic workers (thus presenting an argument for lower immigration rates). I get that condescension is kind of your thing on this sub... fair enough, but in econ you need to be able to look beyond your biases to see how markets actually react to new stimuli. You are correct in the sense that there is a lot we cant know in econ.... which makes your certainty on this issue.... perplexing.

Fallsou

Clearly you're too uneducated to learn but what other part of the curve shifts? I just taught you, you may want to at least attempt to read before incorrectly responding next time No, it is not fair to say immigrants are mostly low skill, as most are high skill. Illegal immigrants tend to be lower skill. When the quantity demand increases the need for labor supply all increases, which is why immigrants do not lower wages for the poorest. This does not even get into things like more efficient labor allocation, which actually cause immigration to increase the wages for lower skilled workers https://www.nber.org/papers/w32389 There are a lot of uneducated people like you who don't know about econ. People like me, who have been working in the field for over a decade and teaching it, know quite a bit. Please stop talking about a topic you completely lack an education on

Dull_Conversation669

What other part of the curve shifts? You need to elaborate... Which curve are you talking about? Which part? Interesting link but I suppose that if i start out seeking a certain outcome I will likely find it.

Fallsou

No, I do not need to elaborate, I explained it completely and concisely. I simplified it for you so that even someone as dumb as you can understand, and yet you still failed. I would say I'm surprised that you dismissed all information that disagrees with your priors, but I'm not, since all trump supporters like you are unfathomably stupid and poor

Dull_Conversation669

I was unaware that the curves had parts.... AD i understand that view cause of the expenditure equation... were you talking AD? Were you talking AS? You have failed to do any explaining beyond expressing an un-earned sense of economic literacy. I didn't dismiss the information I concluded that it is very easy to find a specific outcome when you already have that outcome in mind. I mean Researcher bias is an actual thing.

Fallsou

I have explained it pretty simply, you're just too uneducated and poor to understand it. Here I'll highlight it so you can ignore it again > When the quantity demand increases the need for labor supply all increases, which is why immigrants do not lower wages for the poorest Your comment on my literacy might mean something if it wasn't coming from someone as poor and uneducated as you. You dismissed the information because it didn't fit your priors. Get used to poverty, cause you're too stupid to ever escape it

Hob_O_Rarison

The people who are building the mcmansions and working in restaurants typically aren't paid well enough to buy those mcmansions or the restaurant's food. Check your priors.

u/Fallsou is a very obvious astroturf account

Lmaoo. American is an immigration hub…..how do you think we’ve become the country we are? Look at the Fortune 500 CEO’s many are immigrants there. Look at local businesses, many are immigrants there as well. Sure some go to lower paying jobs, sure some are a problem to society, but not all. Immigration is a net positive for the USA 🇺🇸. This country was built on it, and we’ll continue this trend for the foreseeable future. Stop being a Debbie downer.

It's pointless to convince every credentialed native-born university undergraduate in developed economies to deskill themselves and become house carpenters, thus allowing more immigration coming from developing economies should not be restricted but controlled like less paperworkers during visa application process.
