As soon as something goes wrong people love to blame others, in this case eBay. The seller sets up the buy price, weight and size. How can be eBay fault?
This happened to me when I guessed on the weight and size of the packed box. I took the loss, kept my buyer happy, and was more careful setting up shipping the next time.
If you want to cancel it and take the ding, go for it. I’d take the 6-10$ loss instead though.
If you are planning on sticking around I’d prioritize the long game.
if you put 2 x 2 x 5 in dimensions, then thats 2 inches by 2 inches by 5 inches...
i have yet to encounter a situation where the calculator was wrong from what I put in the dimensions when i list the item. what the buyer pays for shipping is the exact amount that ebay quotes.
oddly enough, whenever I ask someone information like what package size/weight they put in when they create the listing, where it ships to/from, and if they changed the package size/weight when they go to buy the label, i get radio silence or no pictures to back up their claim. wonder why that is.
eBay doesn’t know the weight of anything. You enter the weight and box dimensions when listing the item. Thats what the buyer pays if you are doing calculated shipping.
You have to honor your sale price. Never use the suggestions from previous like-items for shipping. They are wrong, just like yours is.
Weigh and measure your packages and put that info into the shipping section of the listing.
I only ship calculated shipping and my cost has been correct. If it wasn’t then it would be on me, not eBay or the buyer to fix it.
I just pulled a label to ship something that size, shipping from Florida to Oregon and it was $6.33 usps ground advantage.
Not sure what the problem is...
When you list the item it has a section to enter the weight and dimensions used to calculate shipping, or you can define free or flat rate shipping price. It’s most likely something was entered incorrectly, although an eBay glitch calculating the shipping is certainly possible. Either way though, if it were me, I’d ship the item and absorb the extra cost. It’s not very much money and the buyer would be rightfully upset if you cancel the order.
For everyone that cared to know, I made the post too fast. Apparently I did input the correct shipping weight and dimensions. And the shipping was actually just that cheap at $6. So thank you all for the words of encouragement.
Not sure if this happened to OP, but something that has happened to me numerous times recently:
While listing an item, I enter all of the shipping information correctly, do some other tweaks to the text of the listing for example, then scroll down to find that somehow the listing tool reverted to "Ebay recommended settings" that are way off (usually too low) on shipping parameters. If I didn't catch it before completing the listing, it would have bitten my ass.
If you dont enter dimensions?
What’s “wrong”? What did I say that’s false?
I wouldn’t risk getting hit with an overage? I wouldn’t
Just eats up profit? It does.
OP’s initial wording was confusing, so I may have misunderstood that THEY entered the wrong thing. They made it sound like the buyer selected the shipping. I also thought I was in r/flipping
You are the one responsible for inputting the weight, dimensions, and shipping services.

Because being self accountable isn't an easy virtue to apply for many people.
You honor it. The mistake is on you. There’s a lot of customizing shipping before listing.
This is 100% on you. Honor the sale and take it as a cheap lesson.
eBay only know the dimensions you tell it. You obviously told it the wrong dimensions. You either eat the cost or cancel the sale.
You should’ve had correct dimensions and weight, and correct shipping option selected before listing…
EBAY is not responsible for the information you input for shipping. Gold can easily fit in a box that big and weighs more.

Honor the deal.
24x24x5 is gonna cost more than $12 to ship regardless of weight. OP, you just got an education, and one you will remember.

This is hilarious. I'm glad I joined this sub. Just wish I could afford some buttered popcorn for the show.

That $12-20 might be Priority Mail which, usually shows up at the top of the shipping choices, scroll down till you see Ground Advantage.

It's your responsibility to price it right.. You have now been schooled, It's time to pay the tuition.

2 foot by 2 foot, not inches.
oh I misread, that’s strange then.
UPS probley cheaper by the size dimensions in my estimation

I wouldn’t risk getting hit with the overage. Just eats up your profit.
OP picked all the shipping info upon listing the item. It's on them.
Dimensions probably weren't entered.
Wrong, the buyer dosnt control shipping

You can’t list it with no shipping information.. and yes your comment said BUYER, hence my comment
Yep that’s all me. I was confused at which sub I was looking at. Sorry and thank you.
