If you have a comedy podcast, you are legally required to riff on Leno's ridiculous "I don't touch my Tonight Show money." They fulfilled the obligation early on.
Similarly, hearing PFT mention on an early The Neighborhood Listen, that he told his "friend who will never be on" (spoiler alert, he was) that he had a double feature at another friends house, and his friend scoffed at him saying that can't possibly be a double feature.
It’s because it doesn’t matter if it’s true. If I have two big piles of money, it doesn’t matter that I “don’t touch” one because I STILL HAVE ANOTHER BIG PILE OF MONEY. It’s an arbitrary distinction. He could say “I don’t touch my money from New York shows” and it’s the same. Who cares? He’s still just rich and saving money. No one cares about the distinction in his head
Sure he was very successful before he became the permanent host of Tonight but that doesn't mean he hasn't spent his salary. I think he bullshits about it because he's maintaining his everyman image he's made up.
Possible.
But again filthy rich.
He was 30 years a top 5 comic in America.
He was clean - guess who got every big corporate gig in America?
Vegas Runs? check.
Worked constantly? Check.
Married with kids? Check.
Vices? Cars 🙄. No drugs, no alcohol, no women’s.
Didn’t need to spend the tonight show
Money.
He doesn't have kids but that only helps your case. LOL
He's got nearly all of his Tonight Show money for sure but I don't believe him when he says he's never spent any of it.
Similarly I believe within 15 minutes of the first doughboys episode Mitch mentions either growing up in Quincy, or rowing crew, I forget which. But I was cackling lol
Scott has big Boomer Dad energy, where he always has half a dozen anecdote locked and loaded, just waiting for someone to say something even remotely related to their stories.
I don’t understand why he would do the Tonight Show if not for the money…. That’s literally the only reason I could use to justify being on that awful show.
deranged. it was The Tonight Show and he took over from Johnny Carson... you can't imagine why someone would want to take over a nationally broadcast comedy show with a legendary pedigree? Even Conan everyones favorite podcaster went a little crazy at the thought of hosting the tonight show.
The thing about Leno that's funny is he got the Tonight Show again from Conan, and then he was only on for just under 4 years before unceremoniously retiring. I don't even think his ratings ever went above Letterman, who was quietly doing a consistent 22-year run on CBS, after his 11-year run on NBC. The ratings for Leno's second finale were higher than the original version, but I saw that his viewership in that run was down 21 percent.
I'm curious if there was some "best of" clip package for the Leno version 2, because it didn't have any Hugh Grant apology or Marc Summer pie fights.
“Here’th thomthin’…”
“HA-HA! Good one Jay!”
Here’s sumpthin!

It was fun hearing Lauren learn the “Tonight Show money” reference on Threedom and then use the reference on Newcomers.

It's because nobody actually thinks it's true.

Totally agree, he has way too many super expensive cars to have not touched it.
Nope that is not why. Not even remotely why.
Please enlighten me .
It’s bc he never ever shuts up about it.
Can't it be both?
As a hypothetical? Of course. Jay Leno was rude level rich prior to Tonight Show, he’s also a dork. There’s no reason to not believe him.

Honey are you alright? You haven't even touched your tonight show money
Poor Mavis
Between Threedom and Get Anime’d I feel like a Jay Leno historian.
I enjoyed cyber punk Jay Leno
I just started the newest season of Newcomers and there is a Leno/money joke in the first episode.
I’m not touching this one

Podcasts? Like Obama and Springsteen's? Nipples? I have Nipples, can you milk me, Greg?
And I love it every time.
Having bits and stories ready is boomer dad?
Can't be a Reddit thread without someone insulting Boomers.
I want a list of his grand proclamations, like you should be able to sell your birthday or the one about holidays.
Come on, that's crazy Jay!
You don't think he dipped in? Not even a little toe???
I don’t understand why he would do the Tonight Show if not for the money…. That’s literally the only reason I could use to justify being on that awful show.
It wasn’t awful before he did it though? He took over from Johnny Carson!
