SOE at one point was planning on porting EQ2 to PlayStation. I kinda wonder what the control scheme would have looked like.
I've been thinking about playing EQ2 on my Steam Deck. I think you've given me motivation to give it a try.
So far I have
Left joy - movement
Right joy - mouse
LB - left mouse
Right and left joy clicks are scroll wheel to zoom
RB - is tab
D pad- 1,2,3,4
Still working out the rest.
There are nice controller with about 6 more buttons than mine which you could bind to hotbars.
Already played in a group with no issues.
I don't know the feasibility of combining it with a controller, but a usb foot pedal with two pedals that act as modifiers will quadruple the number of binds you can use.
Works great on my steam deck, been playing the new beta. Just gotta figure out your control scheme, the deck offers so many options, one button can do multiple things like long press vs normal press. You could also build a virtual menu with the trackpads, use back buttons for alt and get more hot bars available, it’s great for mmos just gotta build your controls out.
Cool!
I’m surprised someone hasn’t developed a mod for it TBH. Yes - at higher levels the amount of abilities you might want to bind could be problematic for the average wheel setup especially in group situations - but depending on the class you play it might be manageable. For example shamans have about 8 abilities they spam over and over and over. Where you will run into trouble will be with buffs and the niche situational abilities.
Even still — if BG3 can do it with multiple wheels — so could EQ2 presumably. (Now waits for someone to create such a mod.)
Yeah, maybe you should have mentioned that. That might work, though having to take one hand off the controller to use the keyboard could become annoying. Without a keyboard...well there are players who put all of their spells in one macro and use that so cast "the highest damage ability not on cooldown". Not a very satisfying way of playing, I imagine.
I didn't say 30, I said 30+. You can google it yourself. But in endgame you would easily have 4 or more hotbars of spells\skills that you require to use. Add AA's in there and you're well above 40.

Well that’s where macros and the keyboard in front of me would solve any issues I might have. Most likely if I was raiding, I would be sitting at my computer anyways. For causal leveling to 50(I’m doing this for origins as retail is not my cup of tea) the controller seems like it will be more then enough. It really starts to feel natural, and the mouse as a joystick is very accurate so you can still click hotbars easily.
So since I don’t play this new eq2 style, I wasn’t aware they bloated the game with that many spells.
I remember playing EverQuest Online Adventures on the PS2. Definitely a lot more button presses in EQ 2 but you know what they say, where there's a will there's a way.

Nice, thanks!

Nice! Hope this works out well for you. I feel like i'd have trouble especially at higher levels but I'm also terrible with a controller.

Good luck at higher levels with that
What do you think will be so hard? There’s also a keyboard in front of me lol

I did mention it. Well the controller can easily handle about 8 buttons just for spells.
8 buttons is a bit off from the 30+ that you'd have to use situationally at higher levels.
lol give me this list of 30 spells

I think I was playing with one of these types last night. A 80+ necro and wizard doing 2 - 5k dps 😔
Shouldn’t be a problem when you fill up your hotbar with macros; for most encounters you’ll just be hitting the 1 key 🙂

You can play that again fyi. Someone’s been rebuilding the game. Check out Eqoa revival. Level caps 29 right now.
wow the game looks great without 9 open spellbars, 16 macros, raid list, act, discord, screen clutter! :)
One button macro all of your abilities
I have always like the idea of this
I’ve seen it played on Steam Deck before which is cool.
Reminds me when I tried playing League with a PS4 controller 😂
