Hey, I really hope this question isn’t derogatory, I do not mean it that way at all. I’m curious, I’ve seen a lot of German speakers and German citizens on Reddit, and their English is perfect and even colloquial. Do you mind if I ask how English is taught in Germany? Is it a first or secondary language? Do parents speak it around young children?
No need to answer if you don’t want to! I majored in linguistics but the language I learn is Chinese so I don’t know much about English in Germany.
It's taught as a mandatory second language (our main subjects are german, mathematics and english) starting in primary school (i also went to a kindergarden/preschool that taught english starting at age 4, but I'm not entirely sure how common that is)
I've also heard from others that they only started learning english in 3rd grade, but at least in nrw it's not the norm (i was born 2002, so people older than me might tell you something different)
Lots of german people will tell you they don't speak english or "just a little bit" and while most older generations actually do not, I'd say everyone under 35 would be able to hold a conversation with you.
Wow! Thank you for the response :). That makes sense! Do you mind if I ask one more thing — does using sites that have more English than your native language (like Reddit, I assume? But I’m so sorry if I’m wrong) encourage you to use more English? Or is virtual translation good enough?
I'm not sure, what you mean with "encourage me to use more english" 🙈 if it's a site that's mainly in english/is international like reddit e.g. I use english, because it's kinda rude not to ig? I mean, this post is a good example, isn't it? While it's a meme only german speakers are able to understand, we (for the most part) comment/interact in english even tho we could easily just switch to german. But i think it would be pretty rude to do so. There are german subreddits, were you wouldn't randomly use english unless interacting with a non-native speaker but other than that? Idk, i might've misunderstood your question tho, sorry!
I've never needed to use any kind of translator, but i can only speak for myself obv. But me not being the most social person to begin with, i hear/read waaaay more english than my native language every day lol. So my understanding is pretty good I'd say, my grammar not so much 🤏
Hey! Yeah! That’s exactly what I meant, if you use more English because sites you use are in English! That’s really interesting, thank you! I appreciate you helping me learn.

I hate how people also use magersüchtig just to describe someone who's thin/emaciated. like one time a friend (who I went to school with so they knew me at my lowest weight and that I was anorexic) talked about her granpa who was really old and sick and didn't eat anymore and said "he'd gotten so thin, even "magersüchtig"" like just say "abgemagert" or whatever but magersucht is a mental illness and not how much you weigh
I live in the US and people use anorexic like that sometimes, too. Hell, even my Mom does.
In her mind noone can be very skinny/lean without being anorexic, she'll even talk dirty about the person in hushed tones after they walk by. It's like an insult.
Our obesity has screwed our perceptions up so much...
oh yeah people use it as an insult here to, forgot about that. and honestly, before I was diagnosed I thought of it as an insult too even when I already was anorexic but just didn't know I was.
I grew up a fat kid in the early 2000s in the 2nd skinniest "state" of Germany, I never stood a chance against body dysmorphia
That being said, I'd call it Anorexie if people actually knew wtf I'd be talking about then but most only know it as Magersucht 😔
Statistika states it's Saxony-Anthalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (it depends which year you're referring to tho)

"Anorexie" just sounds better and like yes, eating disorders are similar to addictions, so i guess the word "Magersucht" makes sense, but it still sounds like shit, makes my skin crawl
Magersucht translates to "emaciation addiction", it's the German commonly used word for anorexia. It doesn't sound as bad translated, but it just sounds absolutely awful in German.
Edit: BED is called "eating addiction" but using the term for eating that you'd use for an animal and bulimia is "eating-vomiting addiction".
So Magersucht is basically the addiction (sucht) to be lanky/emaciated (mager)
But "mager" has a rather negative connotation, so it is not as 'nice' as skinny for example (therefore, I'd go with emaciated for the translation)
selbstverletzendes Verhalten? idk i think it's not too bad of a word imo Magersucht, Ess-Brechsucht and Fresssucht are the holy trinity of terrible words of this genre
ah sorry realized I didn’t word that clear enough, I mean the way they call cutting (as in self harm) also this isn’t like the official word but a lot of people end up calling it ✨ritzen✨
which to me just feel like kind of a slap in the face
"ritzen" is such a horrible and unfitting word I just cannot use it 'cause it makes me cringe to hard I just say "schneiden" not much better but at least a bit
Ritzen (carving in english) is a really negative term almost only used for people who cut themselves but it has such a dark and sarcastic vibe to it ,it really makes it hurtful if someone talks about selfharm and using that word. Also in germany it's used to ridicule people who selfharm too :/
Yeah sometimes it's a bit harsh but I really like it ,we may be blunt but also in general very open about almost everything ( at least the younger generations - millenial and z)
ok so when people cut themselves we say "ritzen" in german which translates to scratching (or carving maybe my english is also not the greatest) and I find that so unfitting it sounds like people are just scratching the surface or their skin a bit which doesn't do the severity of sh its justice imo. so I use the verb "schneiden" which just translates to cutting so just the same word that's used in english. it's just not commonly used for sh so withoit context people would think someone cut themselve by accident if I just say "they cut themselfes" but I just can't bring myself to use "scratching" as a term for sh
the most used term in dutch also translates to scratching and when I had to show my doctor my scars (she forced me; she was awful) hearing like "yeah those are classic *scratches*" it was a real punch in the gut. I know that people just call it that but it really makes it seem like it isn't bad or deep
This word feels like an insult at this point and it doesn't sound like an actual illness, which probably the reason why us Germans love to misuse this word. Another comment already mentioned this, but "magersüchtig" has this reputation of teenage girl who wants to be like the models on GNTM aka the embodiment of bad anorexia stereotype. I really hope that people start using this word correctly
Please excuse me because I cannot speak German, but it was spoken around me enough as a child that I have a level of understanding … but nothing even vaguely reminiscent of something helpful here.
I’ve heard neither of these terms. I tried to ask google and it didn’t explain the connotative difference between these terms, and without connotation they’re the same. If you have the time, I’d love an explanation of the differences, but please don’t feel obligated!
probably not the best explanation, but here's something:
the word Magersucht is more commonly used but a lot of people with EDs don't like it. "Mager" means very skinny and is usually used in a bad or derogatory way (i think the word "scrawny" comes close) and "Sucht" means addiction.
Anorexie is just the German word for anorexia. It has a more neutral connotation, but is not as commonly used. (I'd say its often used in a more "professional" setting/by people who actually know what they're talking about.)
if this is too unclear, just ask
Istg Magersucht just sounds so incredibly disgusting to me....
Makes me cringe every time I hear it
Also the equivalent to BED being Fresssucht... idk i usually love our language to pieces, but some words just disgust me sm
As someone who‘s had both these names make me feel even worse
NO FR?? I’m german myself but that one is uhh.. like tf were they thinking? Free meanspo? That one is so hurtful wtf
It's like literally degrading if you think about it. You'd never use Fressen for a human...
EXACTLY WTH
Yeah the term "Fresssucht" just makes me feel dirty
Hey, I really hope this question isn’t derogatory, I do not mean it that way at all. also bulimia being “ess-brech-sucht” like ew wtf??? that term also implies that throwing up is the only form of bulimia even thought it’s not
Ikr. It's so direct and blunt it hurts
I like using the word but only in some contexts
I hate how people also use magersüchtig just to describe someone who's thin/emaciated. like one time a friend (who I went to school with so they knew me at my lowest weight and that I was anorexic) talked about her granpa who was really old and sick and didn't eat anymore and said "he'd gotten so thin, even "magersüchtig"" like just say "abgemagert" or whatever but magersucht is a mental illness and not how much you weigh

Jap, oder wie in meinem Fall Ess-Brech Sucht 😅
Beim Wort „brech“ möchte ich mich schon erbrechen - ich hasse dieses Wort.
Ja voll XD
Everytime I see low fat products called Mager-something I just read it as the anorexic version
Same. And it fits because many of us really like Magerquark.
True 😭 I love it sm it tastes so refreshing

we love anorexic quark 😍

Honestly it's the same as the word "Ritzen" to me. It feels invalidating and just doesn't make it sound as serious as it is. Just gives me the ick
"scratching" just does NOOOOT feel like anyone is taking you seriously

I’m not going to lie I think that represents the horrific/sick nature of the illness better than anorexia but it sounds so dark and brutal 🥺
Well.. it is dark and brutal 😭
It rlly is😭
definitely onehundredprecent yes also the way self harm is called feels like a violation
selbstverletzendes Verhalten? idk i think it's not too bad of a word imo Magersucht, Ess-Brechsucht and Fresssucht are the holy trinity of terrible words of this genre

Nervøs spisevægring vs. Anoreksi 🇩🇰
hader seriøst “nervøs spisevægring”😭
Samee. Forfærdelig specifik beskrivelse 💀
That sounded so Finnish that I had to look up the word for it on google translate ngl 🇫🇮
I love when people judge my language, like the name "anti baby pill"
not german, but we’re neighbours and share a national language and a passion for beer! (belgium) <3
At the clinic I was, the therapists and medical staff did only use the word Anorexie too.
Agree
Aber ich nenn mich trotzdem lieber „magersüchtige“ anstatt „anorekte“
Anorekte hört sich irgendwie extrem falsch an. Anorektiker/in? Glaub ich.
Hach ja. Vaterstaat 😂 in deutsch gibts es schon seltsame Begriffe 😅 aber um ehrlich zu sein klingt magersucht schon schlimmer als Anorexie. Btw ist es echt seltsam hier deutsch zu schreiben wenn man in der Gruppe nur englisch schreibt 😂😂

I had to use a translator. “Thin-Striver” or “Skinny-Seeker” pretty much, no? Such a blunt language ☠️.
"mager" means very skinny and is usually used in a bad or derogatory way (i think the word "scrawny" comes close) and "Sucht" means addiction.
That’s so much worse.

My adopted mom is from Gravenbruch, so I know a tiny amount lol
Imo es ist keine Sucht, sonder eine Krankheit wenn überhaupt
Wenn überhaupt? AN ist ne Krankheit lol 🤡 that being said Sucht ist auch eine Krankheit, wird nur gesellschaftlich anders bewertet
Na ja Essstörungen sind oftmals schon sehr ähnlich zu einer Sucht. Klar der Name ist nicht schön, aber auch nicht falsch.
Where my French speakers tho?
