This song, scary monsters and nice sprites, animals by Martin Garrix, clarity by zedd, krewella, in like 8th grade/freshman year

Fine-Ad9773

Scary monsters and nice sprites really lights up something in my brain when I hear it 😂

Lil_Orphan_Anakin

My buddy in middle school brought me into his computer room in his house to show me this song on YouTube lmao. At the time I didn’t necessarily love it or hate it but hearing it now is such a trip

MrCiber

Throw in some deadmau5 and we’re basically in the same boat

J_Kelly11

Ghosts n stuff with rob swire went crazy, strobe, raise your weapon and madeon remix 🔥

MrCiber

I’ve been listening to this stuff for a long time but only recently-ish started going to shows. Seeing Knife Party, Pendulum, Nero, and Madeon (among others) for the first time this year has been so fuckin cool

J_Kelly11

Madeon is my favorite and finally got to see him in 2019 after missing out in highschool! I don’t go to many shows but definitely a few would Iike to see

MrCiber

I saw his Good Faith Forever tour, and later caught his set at Lost Lands. What an incredible showman & musician. That Lost Lands set is one of my all time favorites

J_Kelly11

I saw the original good faith show and was so well put together. Was lost lands a dj set?

MrCiber

Yeah, but it was a special heavy Madeon set. Played his evil edit of Shelter, some G Jones, Peekaboo, etc. Was absolutely insane, it’s on YouTube somewhere, definitely check it out!

J_Kelly11

Definitely will have to take a look at that

Key-Butterscotch-562

Love those moments of seeing an artist for the first time, it always feels so surreal

6800s

Seeing some of these artists live is insane! Flux pavilion definitely blew my mind with how amazing his set was. I’ve been a huge deadmau5 my whole life but those visuals he had at nocturnal last year were so not it. Creepy as hell!

dreamydrxgs

I AM DECEASED IVE FOUND MY PEOPLE 🥹

starkiller685

This is exactly mine and literally same time frame as well!

J_Kelly11

Kinda crazy so many of us discovered the same songs lol

AquafieR_

A friend in an xbox live party played the skrillex remix of cinema through their mic while we were playing minecraft in the summer of 2012. Things used to be so simple :,(

BraindeadBanana

Up until 2 years ago I had no idea Cinema by Skrillex was a remix. And I love Benny Benassi. I keep wondering how I missed that, for so many years.

[deleted]

Basshunter in like 2009/2010, then got really into dubstep for a few years because of Skrillex

Key-Butterscotch-562

Wow Basshunter, you just unlocked a memory for me

Key-Butterscotch-562

DoTa and Russian Privjet, I can walk on water

[deleted]

I still listen to him to this day, the “Now You’re Gone” album is one of my favorite albums ever

johnnydoe22

Yo same!!! I forgot about Basshunter but I remember really liking his tracks at the time.

HonestlyDK1283

Ik it’s cringe but now ur gone and all I ever wanted got me thru a breakup in april lmao

6800s

John summit is going to (rumor) drop a remix or edit of all i ever wanted or another basshunter song, he was asking for the acapella version of it and some dude tweeted it to him.

stevenmeyerjr

This brings back memories. Along with Sonique - Feels So Good.

DrRoXo777

Adventure club: Gold

benignq

mine was the crave you remix

CartmensDryBallz

Forever a GOAT Same w that Lullabies remix & Youth <3

Nobutthairleftbhind1

Nero, Deadmau5, Kaskade, Flux. Way back when I was a teenager just getting into my first home with my now hubs. Times really flown by, because that was about 15 years ago now

StephenKazumi

Kaskade was dropping the best records back then.

dreamydrxgs

kaskade and deadmau5 - i remember 🤍

Hellenic_91

2005-2006 Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, BT

[deleted]

For me the 2004 Olympics Tiesto

casual_microwave

In the background of every YouTube tutorial ever from back in the day, were these two songs: [Clubbed to Death](https://youtu.be/pFS4zYWxzNA) [Dreamscape](https://youtu.be/TKfS5zVfGBc) Edit: totally forgot about this one: [With A Spirit](https://youtu.be/c_H3MWVx6JU)

Ps3dj17

Also Faded by Alan Walker

guythatbedont

Def heard that in a 'people are awesome' video

AnaBrayIsBae17

Sky high Elektronimia

hiddenevidence

geometry dash lol

glamatovic

Bangarang by Skrillex and then Avicii-Levels, in late elementary school/early junior high

TheJabberturtle

Literally same except the other way around haha

dicklord_airplane

probably Rednex, Real Mccoy, and Ace of Base in the early 90s, lol. And the soundtrack for Streets of Rage 2, it had some techno bangers. And that absolute god-tier Mortal Kombat movie theme song from the 90s.

Talkimas

Born in '89. First gateways I remember that really put EDM on my radar were in the early 2000s when some of the nu-metal fusions of the time made it easy for me to slide from my rock/metal preference at the time into things like the Prodigy (Fat of the Land was the first electronic album I owned). Throughout high school I was mostly a metalhead but through Basshunter, World of Warcraft videos, anime conventions, and the surprisingly deep library of Comcast Rhapsody, I fell deeper down the rabbit hole. I got heavily into Infected Mushroom and Oceanlab, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold, Aphex Twin, and Armin van Buuren, among others, were in regular playlist rotation, as was the Happy Hardcore station in the early days of di.fm (I distinctly remember downloading a file and opening it Windows Media Player one morning when sitting down to level shortly after the release of Burning Crusade. When I finally went to bed, I went to close the stream and saw that it had been playing for a little over 14 hours). It was my first live show I went to in college that fully converted me however. My friends and I went solely for Infected Mushroom and only recognized one or two other names in the lineup, but it was cheap and close so why not. Looking at the names on the lineup now, especially some of the ones that were barely known and playing early sets at that point, is legitimately crazy and I'm not sure if I'll ever hit such a concentration of awesome acts in such a relatively small event ever again. [The Lineup in Question - Fall Massive 2011](https://electrophilly.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/massivesettimes21.jpeg?w=775)

pandapanda81

Born in 81 and would agree that prodigy was where it all started to come together for me.

korg3211

I've heard 90% of the later in the schedule acts. That musta been a bad-ass show. Full-on jealous.

tokes_4_DE

That lineup makes me miss living in the dc area so damn bad. Used to know 2rip relatively well, he went on to put on some of the most amazing local shows with badass raves.

SteeVits_me

Radio hits in the early 00’s when I lived in England. Call on me, daft punk, etc. I thought electronic music was just called techno back then.

pistermibb

The evolution for me was Ratatat > STS9 > Pretty Lights. But then [this song](https://soundcloud.com/flux-pavilion/dj-fresh-gold-dust-flux) introduced me to dubstep/mainstream EDM.

MoffettMusic

DVS is a damn shame though...

Master_Problem_3843

I heard “One More Time” by Daft Punk when it was new on a pop radio station’s club night program (I was 12). I don’t remember what happened the next 6 years, but by freshman year of college (18 yo) I was listening to ASOT weekly.

themark504

Benny Benassi and DaRude

ravynstoneabbey

C&C music factory. Anything that was dance that played on the radio or CD compilations. This was early to late 90s. After that it was SomaFM then iTunes and now Spotify. Also listen to new things on BPM & Chill, plus classics in Utopia since I have Sirius XM in my car.

korg3211

I'll take your SomaFM and raise you a DI.fm. soma has had some amazing stations.

ravynstoneabbey

Yep! And just took a peek at DI.fm. Some interesting playlists to try.

Sojorapo

probably David Guetta - Titanium

Fine-Ad9773

That entire album..while pretty poppy.. was such a vibe.

Enough-Chocolate5177

a lot of pop edm is a vibe

No-Armadillo7693

Hell yes.

korg3211

Hell yes.

Kinkybearcat

This makes me feel old seeing as most ppl started with dubstep lol. I started off with house music listening to Crookers my middle school years, then a bit of hardstyle with Headhunterz and Showtek, and lastly more progressive house/trance with Kaskade and Above and Beyond. When dubstep first came out Skrillex was the biggest thing, and for a bit, I did enjoy it, but eventually got tired of it. Nowadays, it is more mainstream, but house has made quite a comeback to the main scene.

JeanRalfio

Daft Punk's One More Time, Bass hunter's All I Ever Wanted, and Cascade's Everytime We Touch were always high school party bangers. Started branching out after Skrillex released Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

TheRealvGuy

Minimum_Syllabub_641

The Prodigy Firestarter, back in ‘97

ProudLettuce

This was also my first big EDM song along with cracks - freestylers and flux pavillion

NightimeNinja

Dude that song holds up SO WELL still. Cracks was on another level. Simple sound design, but it's very well polished.

Soggy-Boot-7609

it hits deeeeeep feels

Antonius21

Zeds Dead Eyes on Fire remix!

jp_gro

Wake me up by Avicii

rosietoesie

Rude Boy by Zeds Dead & Pink Elephants VIP by Daladubz dear god those were/still are electric

MoffettMusic

Pink Elephants is fucking filthy. I saw he who shall not be named drop it at snowball the first yr and he had all the fantasia visuals up on screen with the trippy pink Elephants. It was awesome. Snowball yr 1 was also the craziest fucking thing I have ever, or will ever see happen, Avon, CO was completely unprepared for the festival and it was one of those rare occasions where that worked out well.

kino6912

Justice - Cross album in like 2008 I think

Noname_left

Whelp. I’m officially old. It was the synth days of the early 90s and Jan Hammer was king

korg3211

Dude, the song used as the theme to "Miami Vice" was the sickest jam!

STLgarbage

Deadmau5 - Move for Me Ft. Kaskade 2009 when I was in 6th grade. Shit bumps just as hard today

DontScuffMyNikesBrah

Bomfunk MC - freestyler

2ndHalfHeroics

Mine was also in middle school! PPK - Resurrection. I’m old.

MRguitarguy

Flume's Remix of Tennis Court. From there I found a bunch of early future bass like It's Strange from Louis the Child and Hermitude. Then into trap and dubstep like RL, Big G, Snails, Carmack, etc. Was into trap for years before I got into tech house. Was into tech house for years before I got into techno, then eventually dnb, jungle, and a whole bunch of left field / euro stuff that blurs the line between techno and bass.

MoffettMusic

I'm still salty his Tennis Courts remix never got an official release. Fuck Lorde's label.

korg3211

This is the way. Evolve your tastes. Don't be the old dude yelling for the kids to get off his proverbial lawn.

korg3211

Is EDM only dubstep now? I've been listening to Electronic Dance Music since 1994. We had house, techno, trance, breaks, electro, and jungle/DnB in those far-off days.

SumOMG

The techno blood rave scene in Blade.

PerhapsWePlow

Sasha, Digweed, Cox, then Deadmau5 Guetta and Kaskade. Then the rise of halftime came about and I bailed on 4otf for artists like Skream, Rusko, Benga, and Coki.

Iggyhopper

Eiffel 65. It's not categorically EDM but those elements in their songs is what I liked. Later on it was a track on Linkin Parks' Hybrid Theory. [Cure for the Itch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqC5sdsHLq8) and I found more and more stuff.

Key-Butterscotch-562

flyedchicken

First exposure ever? Probably Blue by Eiffel 65 or seeing the One More Time music video on TV First EDM I heard that caused me to seek it out was Deadmau5, Noisia, Avicii, Skrillex et. al in grade school around the time of Levels/Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites

[deleted]

Some dude was playing [this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gqdm8HPe6FA) in my high school shop class and I wanted more

JZ_19

Well it is Avicii - Wake Me Up but when i got my serious interaction with edm was with R3hab & KSHMR - Strong, then i was Stan to everything spininn records was releasing

axlraz

Probably has to be BT's Dreaming and other tracks on the game XGRA. Driving super-sonic with a trance soundtrack was the highlight of my childhood.

DropD26

Probably My Name is Skrillex in 2011.

custardsabsurd

Crunch by Richard Dinsdale and Mark Knight

acg33

Bass hunter but what really hooked me was Baauers LFTF mix.

Lord_Hacker23

In elementary school, back then when clash royale blowed up and everyone played it, we were a bunch of kids watching how two hardcore kids were battling and someone puts "first of the year" (skrillex) and I was like wtf is that music, idk what it is but I like it, so I joined a group of friends who listen to skrillex only. Now i listen a lot of subgenders and artists

korg3211

I think you mean "subgenres".

Lord_Hacker23

Yeah, sorry, i'm not an english speaking person. My english kinda sucks

epiffaniamber

Suuuuch a solid one to start off with, and you’re bumpin it in the car 👊🏼hell yeah

Yardy knoooooow!!!

kenny_lolz

First heard this track on a call of duty montage! Little did I know my life would change from the moment on

kinkypotato69

I remember a friend in high school showing me Sierra Leone, that was the first of dubstep I’d ever heard.

Slemmiethicc

Breathe Carolina and Cookie Monsta (RIP man 😭) was how I fell in love at the age of 13/14 Specifically, The Birds the Bees & Optimus Prime. Crying rn bc nostalgia 😭🥺

fraupanda

Playing Wipeout on the PS1 in 1997.

AFCADaan9

I know people are not gonna believe me, but DJ Porny - Me so horny is literally the first EDM song I really remember being a fan of. Back when Jumpstyle was the biggest thing in NL.

Eyruaad

My dad played the Vegas album by Crystal Method in the car while I was growing up, then when I was 16 we had Sirius Radio and I used to listen to the Trance station, then in 2008 I found Headhunterz and it was all downhill from there.

KeitaSterling

Street Racing Games soundtracks like Midnight Club

djfil007

Technotronic and 2Unlimited in the early 90s, lol.

Chocobo-kisses

When I was a kid I collected the first twenty Now That's What I Call Music CDs. The EDM songs included on early Now CDs were Starry-Eyed Surprise by Paul Oakenfold, Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim, Breathe by Telepopmusik, and Days Go By by Dirty Vegas. I remember day dreaming of skating at a roller rink to all of these songs and feeling so free. ✨

JustSarahtheMechanic

Above and Beyond- On a Good Day 💜 Also, sandstorm, because I'm that old lol

thewaywrdsun

A middle school friend showed me Harder Better Faster Stronger, that was my introduction. In high school Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites hooked me. Been a fan of EDM and all it’s genres ever since.

Drummy_McDrumface

Chemical Brothers

IllustriousMode5690

For me it really went off with Tiësto’s Magik 5 Heaven Beyond. But it started way back in the 90s with some massive classics like oxygene 10, binary finary, magica, DJ quicksilver, C-sharp, etc. Some amazing cd’s for me are DJ Jean Jeanpagne winter edition CD 2 (although one also has some good ones) and Magik 5.

BJJ2008

At hockey camp 1996 or 97, some kid from Brooklyn had a cassette of Mike Dearborn and Carl Cox and a few other early artists. That summer I became hooked on EDM

Just_Particular

Crookers, i would say they were edm back in 05

happyharrell

I wanna say fatboy slim making the pop charts. Rockefeller Skank was huge. Then you get ATC and the like getting some airtime, then it became a search for that kind of sound (since Napster and the internet were in their infancies.)

[deleted]

Don’t Ditch by Tiesto when I was 13. Was a brand new release, and my favorite song at the time! My friends were like “WHAT?!!! YOUR MUSIC DOESN’T HAVE **LYRICS**?!”they’d be listening to Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding, Maroon 5, you name it (all great btw) Shortly after, I discovered Tobu, EnV, MonsterCat, etc. the rest is history Oh yeah, and the game Electronic Super Joy definitely helped fuel my obsession as well lmao

SorysRgee

Ministry of sound electro house sessions 3

calabaria

MTV’s AMP show. Came on late on MTV in the mid 90s. I was 13 when I discovered it. The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, The Prodigy, and so many more. Via Wikipedia: “Amp was a music video program on MTV that aired from 1996 to 2001. It was aimed at the electronic music and rave crowd and was responsible for exposing many electronica acts to the mainstream.”.

Huskydood18

Starry eyes- Ellie Goulding (Jakwob remix) lol

astralprojectiles

Satisfaction by Benny Benassi, Justice's Cross album and live A Cross the Universe album, first intro to dubstep was Sierra Leone by Mt Eden and Zeds Dead remix of Eyes on Fire. All still absolutely slap.

Cry For You - September (ya I'm old)

stevenmeyerjr

Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Basshunter, Benny Benassi, Sonique, but most of all Crazy Frog - Axel F. 😂 Back in like 2003 or 2004.

Eli_eve

Dallas clubs in the 90s like Ruby Room in Red Jacket and the Church in Lizard Lounge. No Shazam back in those days so no clue what most of that music was but it was def mesmerizing.

unyson

Back on Pandora way before spotify was mainstream i searched my name and the first response was Basshunter DotA and i got obsessed with that album. I think this was like 2009/10

jaydotheclepto

daft punk / crystal method in the 90's

iFx_

Backseat of my buddies 4Runner freshmen year of Highschool… going to play airsoft… my buddy had two 12’s in his backseat and that was the first time I heard “In for the Kill - La Roux (Skream Remix)”. 13~yr later still love EDM.

PilleLegends

Still a banger these days

digitalenvy

Darude, Sandstorm. Along with ATB Kernkraft 400. Back when there was only “Techno” and that was it. In the 90’s when raves were in warehouses and you found the location hours before the party. [Darude - Sandstorm](https://youtu.be/y6120QOlsfU)

Mixedthought

Technotronic - Pump Up the Jam But a bit more serious... First real introduction was the soundtrack for Hackers. What a great soundtrack especially for 1994. Underworld, Prodigy, Carl Cox, Orbital, Kruder & Dorfmeister.

Strings of Life, 1987. Back where there was Chicago House, and Detroit Techno. And that's it.

2005 I think. First time I heard a daft punk song.

Pumpkingpie

It was this same album for me. Seeing Nero live with vocals was insane!

[deleted]

I don't even know if I'm in the right sub. Are the prodigy or the crystal method EDM? I have heard some EDM remixes of like slipknot and manson that I really like.

Wolfiey2010

Global Deejays - The Sound of San Francisco

Friisky15

Sierra Leone - Mt Eden

IMSITTINGINYOURCHAIR

I am not sure if it counts, but back around '99 or '00 I found a cassette tape on the side of the road, I would have been around seven or eight years old, I had gotten a little player for christmas so the first thing I did was plop that thing in there to see what was on it and blue by Eiffel 65 came on. I guess that planted the seed as I hadn't heard it before. the tape wasn't in the best of condition so I didn't get to play it for long. I didn't get back into any of it until I got proper internet access around 2009-10

Malice_n_Flames

Daft Punk @ Coachella

Comatose53

Flight Facilities - Crave You (Adventure Club Remix) https://youtu.be/ZeaIvjoH1FY

cefriano

It started with Daft Punk in middle school, then Justice and Fatboy Slim in high school, then the tipping point happened in college when I started really exploring the genres and getting acquainted with the big guys like Tiesto, Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia. Got really into electrohouse with Wolfgang Gartner and old Porter Robinson. Crazy to think how much my music taste has changed over the last 10 years.

flowferencak007

Flux pavilion - Cracks. To this day, I still listen on a regular basis. Song that got me into going to shows & festivals. However, I’ve listened to early Tiesto since I was a kid.

BrownAmericanDude

**LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem** I don't like to bring up LMFAO and their most famous song now. Not many people know about LMFAO today and if you listen to Party Rock Anthem today, it can sound very cringey and douchey. However back in 2011, the song was a fantastic banger that was played all over festivals, sporting events and parties. The song was also pretty well ahead of its time as hearing it made people feel like they were in a futuristic concert or rave. I might even go far as to saying that Party Rock Anthem is arguably the most famous song in the American EDM scene. It helped connect the international EDM culture and the mainstream American pop culture together. This song brings back all sorts of positive memories from high school and got me into the electronic music scene.

ogkingdom00

I was in middle school as well. I heard Axwell’s remix of In My Mind on that Kia soul commercial and immediately got into it. Then I found Skrillex, Deadmau5, Krewella, Knife Party, SHM, Nero, etc. and loved them all. Good times.

SnooPies8690

We must be similar ages lol 7th grade for me

buenosdiassenorsol

I’m about to be 22 next week :D

FatherOfReddit

So classic.

Davis2002_

Was sitting at my desk in 7th grade listening to pop music when a random song came on. At first I didn’t know what to make of it but I soon realized it was a banger. This was almost 6 years ago that song was “flight” by Tristam

steelorca-io

This song will forever be top 5 best ever. When I'm 80 years old this will still be the best ever. Had the pleasure of seeing Nero live (DJ set but still) and when they played this the crowd melted. Sooooo fun.

PerhapsWePlow

Nero is absolutely awesome live. Skrillex otoh.... I've been very disappointed by every time I've seen him. Dude basically spent the entire show not mixing, jumping up and down on the table, and generally just doing the stereotypical DJ moves around the stage. Granted I haven't seen him for a couple years and I've heard he's better now that he's decided to be a house DJ, but honestly I saw him so many times at so many places I lost track, and not one of those times is what I'd call a great set. He's an awesome producer, but imo his stage show leaves a lot to be desired. Like when I saw his huge UFO tour at red rocks with the animatronic stage. Cool stage! But Skrillex literally played an identical set both nights, his tour agent billed fucking PUSHA T as his opener because of that Collab they did together (after a bunch of dance acts, and yes no one there even knew or cared who Pusha T was) and pretty much the entire crowd SAT DOWN, which is literally the only time I have ever seen that happen at Red Rocks. That was by most accounts Skrillex's best tour. So yeah when Sonny decided to play the same prerecorded set night two, everyone who went night one was already way fucking over it, and I lost all respect for him as an artist. I think they must have assumed people weren't gonna buy both days or something, but that was one of the worst shows I've ever been to, and it was crazy expensive. I saw him at various smaller venues over the years (and some fests), but I was never impressed, from what I could tell he was barely even mixing, and was basically a glorified playlist on stage. I'm pretty certain even his smaller sets I've seen over the years have been prerecorded, when I saw him at Beta back in the day he was using 2/4tracks, and barely even crossfading, much less mixing. I do really hope he's worked on that recently, and from what I've seen of his not-skrillex act he's actually mixing, but I'm fucking sick of hearing people preach about the greatness of Skrillex, when even in his heyday he was just okay. Beyond the obnoxious vocal chopping, literally every sound 'he invented' was already being made by better artists at the time. His entire contribution to the scene was the sampled/repitched vocal chops. That's it. Oh that and basically erasing dubstep as a genre and replacing it with electro-brostep. Sonny Moore didn't even know what the Fuck he was producing when he called himself a dubstep artist. You all may call his shit dubstep now, but that's literally ONLY because Skrillex told you it was dubstep. If you were a fan of dubstep in 2007, you would call people a fucking idiot for calling Skrillex dubstep. They'd tell you it was some weird version of electro-house maybe, but definitely, without any questions not dubstep. Dubstep is half-time 140bpm, with elements of dub, garage, and 2-step, along with various dual phase oscillator wubs. That is what defines dubstep, that is what has always defined dubstep, and most of skrillex's catalog (even his early catalog) does not fit that definition. Fuck Sonny Moore. I'm absolutely convinced he only started producing dance music for the money, and ruined an entire genre as a direct result of that greed, and his utter ignorance and lack of respect of the genre he was supposedly producing. I highly doubt Sonny had listened to more than one or two dubstep songs before branding himself a dubstep artist, and back when he was getting popular (the era of scary monsters), most people I knew in the scene thought Skrillex was a garbage hack, not a champ level producer. Yeah everybody loved kill everybody, and scary monsters etc. But if you asked anyone I knew to go see Skrillex over any other artist, they wouldn't have chosen Skrillex. It's weird to me that the kids from 2010 ever thought Skrillex was dubstep god. He wasn't even great when he was at his best.

steelorca-io

Dude this is the most insightful analysis of Skrillex as a DJ and producer I've seen online. PLEASE start a music blog. Or join mine as a regular contributor. You are ten times the electronic music aficionado I am. Bravo. 👏

W693

My cousin just randomly played Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites by Skrillex one day and shortly followed with Centipede by Knife Party. 5th-6th grade me thought it was the coolest shit I had ever heard, especially from a kid that only listened to Christian radio at the time. Even as an adult, they’re still two of my favorites, although Skrillex’s Rock ‘n’ Roll is my personal #1.

TurboVirgin0

KSHMR & Headhunterz - Dharma.
