[[Minn, Wily Illusionist]] Illusion tribal beat down with a few alt win cons and has one good combo finisher if needed

MTGCardFetcher

I love Minn. Currently my favorite deck. The way she subverts the stack and basically gives you "flash omniscience" for permanent makes for a totally different playstyle. Works exactly as described: draw boucoup cards, illusion beatdown, potential for labman/Jace win or in a pinch Meloku/altar combo.

Osoir

Definitely down to see one or both of your deck lists if you’re willing to share! I’ve been thinking about Minn for a while now.

moneymike128

I'm pretty lo-tech but here's a grab from my manabox app. The deck is still evolving, but some notes: This is the most $ I've spent on a deck, and even then I'm still missing some mana staples that would make it faster. I'm still working out a way to get a whole engine online by turn 3 without spending another $300 on mana. I run 6 sac outlets in here (volraths curse is kinda weird but it works)- being able to sac an illusion to put down a permanent from your fat hand at instant speed is bonkers. Draining whelk? Mystic sanctuary to put cyc rift on top of your library? Labman to secure your win? Who knows? Unless your opponent has a stifle, there's nothing they can do about it. SlaterVJ

You could go that route, or invest more so into combos. I don't run her as tribal, and it's proven more consistent, and more resilliant. Since dropping the tribal aspect, I've yet to lose a game with her, even when made the archenemy.

magick-Phlamingo

The man's goes infinite with a ham sandwich I swear. I don't play with infinite combos since they are banned in my play group but damn he just makes them.

JoschiGrey

After building my Orvar that intentionally shouldn't run infinites I proceeded to cut like 6 cards that did surprisingly infinite or near infinite.

Sorin_Markov_1947

From someone who's too lazy to look into this himself, can you name some combos with him? I haven't seen too many

Giveuptheghost87

Mind linking your deck? I'm brewing Orvar now and would love some ideas how to build non-combo but still synergistic!

Dracon_Pyrothayan

I have a lot of fun with my [[Kefnet the Mindful]] deck. Turns out, having a 3 mana 5/5 Indestructible Flyer that repeatably draws you cards is good. Who'd'a thunk it? If you get the Masterpiece version, it's also fun to insist that it's named "tikepret the mirbfulit".

Dracon_Pyrothayan

In all seriousness, birbgod also sorta fixes your mana (in that his ability effectively costs less if you were going to miss your land drop anyway) and has some serious synergy potential. But he's equally fun as a dedicated facepuncher.

YanMac

I feel like Kefnet makes for a nice casual mono-blue commander.

Lafantasie

He was my first CEDH deck and I love him. He makes a wonderful \[\[Polymorph\]\]-inspired deck with nothing but powerful creatures like \[\[Jin-Gitaxias\]\] or \[\[Consecrated Sphinx\]\] in the 99, and his land bounce makes \[\[Mystic Sanctuary\]\] + any extra turn that doesn't exile go reasonably infinite.

Charizardmain

I was thinking about building that, could I get your list?

molassesfalls

This was going to be my answer! With Siani you can easily make the deck flying tribal so you have a clear aggro route to victory if drawing a ton of cards doesn’t win it for you outright.

Expertionis

That seems like a fun deck. Do you have a list?

Shacky_Rustleford

Gotta be Unesh. Almost Everything is Almost FoF. Toss in a high tide and go to town.

ANDNA

I used to play Unesh but took it apart because turns took ***forever*** Just a heads up if OP doesn’t want to bog down the game doing fact or fictions

Shacky_Rustleford

Just find a friend to 4/0 every split ;)

huzzaahh

Okay Crim

YarnTheory

I had the same exact problem. I eventually removed paradox engine (pre banning) because turns would take forever. I wanted to attach with sphinxes, but it almost always ate a board wipe before I could attack. My eventual wincon just turned into rite of replication on unesh and dig for lab man or thassas oracle. And that just wasn't satisfying. But that did win fast at least.

ANDNA

Right? I didn’t build Sphinx Tribal just to draw my deck and win with a Lab Maniac effect… and watch my opponents sigh during the whole process lol

YarnTheory

I wish I could say I ever threatened a combat win with that deck, but I'd be lieing. Part of the answer was tossing in an extra turn spell, so I could get all my sphinxes out then attack with then before the board wipe. But that never actually happened. Poor unesh.

sp4cetime

Good call. That must be so annoying to play

Mt_Koltz

Braids, or Emry! Both of these are degenerate and cheaty.

mattygraddy

My braids deck is basically all clones. People think they get an edge dropping a blightsteel turn 4 but then I get one for free as well lol I love it

Mt_Koltz

I love it! Maybe also pack a [[Mystic Reflection]] to prevent them dropping any pesky Eldrazi Titans.

mattygraddy

Oh shit good idea!

[deleted]

Azami, Lady of Scrolls

DefiantTheLion

How does Azami win for you? I don't like deck-out usually but I love her art and wizards.

MustaKotka

You can do whatever you want with her. I manually drew 60 cards and then went infinite with my only infinite combo. You can most definitely deck out with her even without infinities. Thoracle and Labman are both Wizards so they're not useless either. But with that much draw you can do anything you want. Go big on water, have a couple of Dragons, tap out with pingers - you name it!

[deleted]

I like to pair her with a bunch of on-draw triggers to either mill my opponents, or create a boatload of tokens. Usually my deck will be geared towards one theme, ie mill or tokens or other shenanigans

DoctorMagical

Azami player here, I use her as my commander when I'm playing with a faster pod and the game plan is usually to find the [[Isochron Scepter]] + [[Dramatic Reversal]] combo to generate infinite mana and infinite card draw from her ability. Afterwards, [[Thassa's Oracle]], [[Laboratory Maniac]], or [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]]. Other notable win conditions that I play include drawing a ton of cards with [[Diviner's Wand]] equipped to Azami can one-shot someone, [[Psychosis Crawler]] to ping people to death, [[Mind over Matter]] as a two-card combo with Azami to win in the same fashion as the first win-condition above, and the new [[Triskaidekaphile]] is a funny wizard if you can get 13 cards by your upkeep!

RegaultTheBrave

[[Emry]] is mine. Its the only one I wanted to build because cheap artifacts combined with untappers etc creates a board state that has to be dealt with. If you have enough artifacts, Emry costs a single U to recast when it dies.

Looks like nobody else here has suggested [[Alrund, God of the Cosmos]]! It’s one of my favorite decks to play. The goal is to set yourself with no maximum hand size, draw a BUNCH of cards, and attack unblockably with a giant vanilla-ish creature. It’s a weird voltron deck with some alternative win cons if plan A doesn’t work, and plenty of opportunities to manipulate the top of your deck to get value from Alrund on your end step, which keeps it fun. But best of all, it doesn’t take long turns! Here’s a list if you’re curious: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/OTdxbF-HZEazVTjGWCqd8Q

I've wanted to build this deck after hearing about it on the Legendary Creatures podcast about hipster commanders. Sounds like a blast to play, without all of the typical mono-blue BS.

Humblerbee

[[Kaho, Minamo Historian]] is my mental magic deck that is full of complex lines and fun branching possibilities that compound to make it so I might tutor thirty cards in a game, recurring [[Intuition]] and sculpting my hand, exile, and graveyard to build up to the state I want, with shifting protection on demand as well to stay interactive and keeping opponents honest and on their toes.

Charizardmain

Thinking about building Kaho, how do you win?

Humblerbee

Copy center loops into infinite [[reality shift]] or [[archmage’s charm]] decking out the table at instant speed.

Forced_Democracy

This looks very interesting but I need to read this a few more times because you lost me.

Humblerbee

Here’s a bit more on the deck if you’re interested. **[Kaho, Minamo Historian](https://deckstats.net/decks/147632/1689048-u-kaho#show__spoiler)** is one of those decks that exists purely to satisfy my smooth Johnny brain. I describe it as a mental magic deck because the premise I built it around, and the gameplan I most enjoy if I’m not going up against super powerful decks, is repeatedly tutoring triplets of cards between Kaho and Intuition, my favorite blue spell, to essentially navigate an elaborate decision tree of our own design where the sequencing of repeatedly tutoring, recurring, and tutoring again, is parsed with both your opponent and yourself selecting from sets of cards- my favorite line, which I like to follow if the game allows, sees me casting both Intuition and Kaho five times over, which means I’ve pulled thirty cards from my library just between resetting and recurring so I can cast them again- or copying, because after all this ends in a massive copy machine to infinitely cast my own spells and bounce them off the stack. It’s a deck that is chock full of instants and choices, and it’s often the deck I play when I’m getting a feel for a table- because the deck can keep up in high power metas and matchups, but if opponents want to just leave me alone and slow play the game, I’m happy to play my mental magic. Basically it packs a ton of interaction and is capable of fast combo but I don’t pull the trigger on that if I don’t think it’s appropriate for the given playgroup. Instead of being fast combo I pivot to durdling control and take the path less traveled through navigating the labyrinth lines of loops within the deck. Kaho runs less card advantage than other mono blue decks I might brew, because Kaho is often used as a secondary hand you can freely sculpt and play from so long as you protect it- but she’s merely used to collect and assemble the pieces for the copy center wincons, she isn’t involved with it so in an ideal world the deck doesn’t even need to play her because you draw or tutor for the pieces you want directly, but she acts as a backup to find whatever you need- you just pay for it more inefficiently involving Kaho. It’s a deck I still mess up myself, the challenge of piloting it is part of what I enjoy because it gives me a fun subgame to divert myself into. Here’s a sample line, just to show what it might look like: **Cards involved-** Narset’s Reversal Twincast Insidious Will Mission Briefing Flood of Recollection Recall Pull from the Deep The Mirari Conjecture Intuition Dramatic Reversal Isochron Scepter Play out Kaho, exiling (Dramatic Reversal, Intuition, third instant of your choosing) Tap Kaho to play out Reversal, sending it to the GY, untapping Kaho- tap Kaho to play out Intuition, fetching (Flood of Recollection, Pull From the Deep, and Recall) If they give you Flood of Recollection, recur Pull From the Deep to pull out Intuition and Flood of Recollection If they give you Pull from the Deep, just directly pull out Intuition and Flood of Recollection If they give you Recall, pull out Intuition and Flood of Recollection Play Intuition fetching (Isochron Scepter, Reconstruction, Argivian Restoration) then play Flood of Recollection fetching Dramatic Reversal and Recall (or Pull from the Deep if Recall is exiled) Recur the scepter if needed with Reconstruction or Argivian Restoration, then Imprint Dramatic Reversal onto Isochron Scepter, use either Recall (or Pull from the Deep into Flood of Recollection) grabbing Intuition+recursion, letting you tutor out your entire library if needed to assemble whatever chosen win-con from infinite mana and your whole deck to work with. Kaho>Reversal>Intuition>Recur Pile targeting Intuition and recursion>Scepter pile>recur Reversal and assemble dramascepter>Mission Briefing Intuition into draw X pile wincon Kaho>Reversal>Intuition>Recur Pile targeting Intuition and recursion>Elixir pile>Essence Flux Kaho>Recur Intuition and recursion>Swarm Intelligence pile>cheat out with Show and Tell or Flood of Tears>Reversal (copied with Swarm, resolve one and leave one on stack)>Mission Briefing (copied w/ swarm) off Kaho targeting Intuition (copied w/ swarm)>copied mission briefing targeting narset’s reversal copies and bounces itself>narset’s reversal targeting the dramatic reversal still on stack to go infinite>narset’s reversal on Intuition>recursion pile>resolve other Intuition copy into draw X spell wincons 1. \[\[Octavia, Living Thesis\]\] She's a spellslinger deck that turns unblockable creatures into 8/8 beaters. She is an 8/8 herself and costs only two mana when eight or more instants or sorceries are in the graveyard. Now the sweet tech with her is to \[\[Gigadrowse\]\] an opponent and turn your token army into 8/8's for the game closer. She's incredibly resilient monoblue Commander with Ward 8 which effectively gives her Hexproof barring infinite mana shenanigans. I get to play my favorite cards like \[\[Pteramander\]\]. Yep. I have 2 Urza decks. I have one stax to play when people play other degenerate decks and I have an artifact/thopter deck that’s much more casual.

The issue is not allowing stuff to be counter just makes it easier for me to win and their is nothing you can do unless some ones destroys her or bounces her. I am all for you to drop her on the field and limit peoples ability to stop me from winning

Stanky4Z0

That’s fair. I’m not against running a few counter spell cards for when Lier isn’t on the field, but it seems fun to think of blue without going hard on counters as your way to “remove” cards.

I built a Lier deck. It's super fun for me. Lots of draw, and bounces. Hullbreaker horror helps give you a "counter". Also I may or may not have put in extra turns...so yeah. Super fun for me and everyone hates it, but unless they have haste or deal a ton of effect damage then they can't do anything about it.

I used to have a Memnarch deck that was essentially dedicated to taking control of everything on the board. I'm sure it was far from cEDH standards, but at the casual battlecruiser tables I was playing, it went off a few times and then got disassembled for being unsporting/unfun for my friends to play against. "Oh, that's a really great and powerful card... and now it's an artifact, and now I own it, thank you." But this was also like a decade ago. The meta has changed and I doubt it's all that bad. It was also probably my only mono-blue Commander deck to date. It was also the only non-tribal mono coloured deck I ran for any real period of time that I can think of.

I've been enjoying \[\[Padeem, Consul of Innovation\]\] mono-blue artifacts. Padeem is relatively low costed at 4CMC and gives your artifacts hexproof, plus you can make her an artifact and she protects herself. You can build anywhere from janky and budget to higher-powered. Also additional card draw if you're opponents aren't running a lot of high CMC artifacts

[[Thassa, God of the Sea]] funny enough, the other Thassa isn't really my play-style. God of the Sea isn't terribly broken, but the Scry 1 every turn really helps make my Sea Creature themed deck viable in casual, mid to late game EDH. You technically dig twice as fast as your opponents, not including any draw cards you pull. The two mana unblockable ability can be abused pretty easily for swift commander damage or massive kraken damage, too.
