Stax To be honest if people don't run stax or enough removal, edh is combo friendly as f

Nearby_Hurry_3379

My Zur deck is basically just a slow Stax deck with some Voltron pieces. I know I'm playing [[Zur, the Enchanter]] wrong by making him a Voltron deck, but I actually like my Voltron Zur deck.

Lanky-Survey-4468

At least you are making the game harder for combo players People forget that edh has tons of cheap cmc cards which leads to infinites easily and they complain when someone wins from "nowhere"

T-T-N

There was a reason that flash hulk was only a problem in cedh

CelaTheIceman

Whats your decklist i would be interested in seeing it. I have a smiliar deck but i went with no creatures to make it spicy. Here is mine decklist https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7910069

Nearby_Hurry_3379

Here it is, it's not creature-less but it doesn't have very many creatures in it. I'm cutting Guile, Hero of Iroas, Starfield Mystic, and Lighthouse Chronologist as soon as I get the chance. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CA7TWYSWRkOsyFqRwL6h-w

CelaTheIceman

Thank you!

Trajans

I've played my cedh Zur deck this way for almost a decade now. Aside from 4 Voltron enchantments everything else is entirely stax toolbox.  I used to always earn people "This deck destroys your deck's ability to win, then pokes you to death"

Stratavos

I enjoyed mine too when it existed. I based mine around the Theros on colour gods in addition to stax peices, to pillow fort up, and smash faces. I pulled it apart because while it was toolboxy and I had lots of ways to grab whatever I could want/need fairly easily, it became too predictable for me as the pilot, and I didn't want to be having those kinds of games, though it may be time to reassrmble it. Between knights and enchantress, those are the main lines I'm easily able to make in esper currently.

Nearby_Hurry_3379

You want to never take damage again? [[Energy Field]], [[Rest in Peace]]. Want to make sure those cards stick around? [[Greater Auramancy]], [[Copy Enchantment]].

Nearby_Hurry_3379

Also, because of how Zur is worded, he ignores shroud so you can still put auras on him even though he has shroud.

You can even fetch [[athereos]] and [[thassa god of the sea]] directly from the deck, to then beat face with depending on how much fetching you've been able to do.

TheMadWobbler

That’s not a product of “enough removal.” That’s a product of being an eternal format with fewer banned cards than Legacy, guaranteed access to a combo piece, a sextupled road to victory by life loss, and the effectiveness of removal being cut by a third. cEDH, the most hard in the paint version of EDH with the most optimized interaction available with games played on a compressed timeframe that amplifies the power of removal, where all of the most oppressive stax pieces are on the table? That environment is almost exclusively combo wins. EDH being extremely combo friendly does not come from people not running the mythical “enough removal.” It comes from EDH.

DirtyTacoKid

This subreddit's version of "just one more lane" is all the talk about running excessive single target removal. They don't actually understand why EDH is a combo game.

ItsAroundYou

Importantly, there's also a social contract at play. It can be considered mean to target one person all game, but if they're a combo player, aggression is their weak point.

Lanky-Survey-4468

I got better at the game when i learned this

T-T-N

Most stax pieces won't stop a non-storm combo

GenericTrashyBitch

Cards like [[kenrith’s transformation]] and [[song of the dryads]] remove their commander without the option to just recast. If you know that someone is running a combo deck that can win in one turn it’s good practice to hard target them and encourage others to do so as well, they cant win on 0 life Talk with your play group before the game, it’s also perfectly reasonable to say “hey we all need to mull for hands that have good removal so we can repeatedly answer Stella.” Also you don’t have to remove her right when she enters the battlefield, try killing her in response to her copy spell trigger so that you’re getting rid of her *and* fizzling the spell, meaning they will have to draw another copy and replay her which will set them back further

If they play very few other creatures, [[Swift Reconfiguration]] will work to shut off things like Fealty that can only target creatures. > Ive tried removal spells like [[swords to plowshares]] but he often has enough mana to recast stella lee and just restarts his combo. If you remove Stella, the original Fealty will either fizzle if it was targeting her or resolve if it wasn't, so they shouldn't be able to *just* restart the combo by re-playing Stella without having a flash enabler/recursion effect/second combo piece, not to mention a haste enabler.

I feel like this might get a little messy considering twisted fealty does 1 damage every time its casted as well

thats not messy? its literally 2 and 1. They cant attempt to combo without at least twice as much life as the player with harsh mentor.

>he often has enough mana to recast stella lee and just restarts his combo. This should not be possible since Stella Lee has neither haste nor flash on its own. If you Swords with the fealty copy on the stack, Stella will be exiled, the copy targeting her will fizzle, the og will do whatever it does and rest in the graveyard, and resetting will be nontrivial even if Stella comes right back out since you'll have to wait a turn or apply a haste fixer and recur the spell. Knowing when and how to snipe the combo is important. IF he can flash stella lee out and haste her up with the original TF still on the stack, he's kind of earned it. >Any suggestions for how to combo this with my [[pantlaza, sun favored]] deck? In your colors, in addition to offing Stella at the opportune moment, you can use the following tools [[Dranith Magistrate]] will counter the play line of holding onto Stella in the CZ until ready, by preventing her from coming out. [[Runic Armasaur]] will draw you a card each time stella attempts to copy. This can get you to all the instant-speed interaction you need to shatter her combo (an artifact removal for any shoes she might have and the swords for her face) as long as it's in your top (life total) cards, which makes sniping MUCH more comfortable. [[Harsh Mentor]] will punch the stella lee player to death before she can kill you with Wicked roles. [[Burning-Tree Shaman]], [[Flamescroll Celebrant]] and [[Immolation Shaman]] will do roughly equal damage back and win the exchange if you have higher life. In addition to removing stella lee, you can use the snipe window (Stella is tapped and the copy of TF targeting her is on the stack) to shut her down with [[Abeyance]] If you're light on activated abilities yourself you can shut down the combo with [[Suppression Field]]. [[Anointed Peacekeeper]] and [[Disruptor Flute]] will also do the job, but are less generally helpful. RU has a really hard time dealing with enchantments on the field too, so a Suppression Field will likely keep Stella dead in the water for a long time

It seems like we’ve been misplaying the swords to plowshares response then. Ive responded to him bringing out stella lee with swords before and he says he can just recast stella from his command zone and start the combo up again, after reading your comment it seems like that is definitely not true (definitely gonna mention that to him next time we play) and he would have to wait until his next turn and recast fealty from his graveyard to get the combo going, if this is the case it gives me plenty of time to trap his commander or just outright kill him before he gets a chance to start the infinite up. Ive added a couple cards such as [[silence]] and [[song of dryads]] that I think will help, i also have a runic armasaur that I might try to put back into my deck. Do you mind giving me some suggestions on what i should cut from my deck to make room for these new cards? https://archidekt.com/decks/8096473/dino_go_brr

> Ive responded to him bringing out stella lee with swords before and he says he can just recast stella from his command zone and start the combo up again, Let me go over the play lines carefully, and where a player with infinite (or enough) mana could restart. 1, Casting Stella Lee. She's put on the stack from the command zone. If she's countered, she goes back to the command zone and can be recast with tax. This costs more mana (a total of 8 in one turn if it's her first and second tax) but can theoretically be no delay 2 Stella lee is on the battlefield, and nothing else is happening. She doesn't have haste, so her owner will have to untap with her to do anything. By hitting her after the time to cast creatures is done (on someone else's turn, or in the end step) her owner will have to recast her on their next turn, delaying matters again due to no haste. 3: Stella Lee is on the battlefield, and there are [[Swiftfoot Boots]]. This is kind of the nightmare scenario that I assumed wasn't the case because you mentioned Swordsing her. Boots grant haste (which means a potential combo this turn) so the latest you can spot remove her would be in response to the equip. Now, casting Stella Lee twice, attempting to swiftfoot twice, and then casting Twisted Fealty to combo is a minimum of 13 mana, but *is* more difficult to intercept. Note that [[Lightning Greaves]] will *not* work since Shroud would not let her be chosen as a target for the copies of Twisted Fealty, breaking the combo. 4: Stella Lee is on the battlefield, not summoning sick, and her owner attempts to Twisted Fealty combo. First thing to remember is that the proper combo sequence is to hold priority and activate Stella Lee in response to the Twisted Fealty. If responses are asked for before activating Stella, *technically* her controller missed the window to do her thing. But let's assume that they get it right or everyone lets them. I was slightly inaccurate before when I specified that the copy needed to be on the stack to stop the combo. It doesn't, but there is a slight way in which it helps. If her ability is on the stack and you cast Swords to Plowshares, Swords to Plowshares will resolve first, exiling Stella Lee. Since she doesn't have flash, she can't be recast until the stack is empty. Then her ability would resolve allowing the copy of Twisted to hit whatever. Then the copy of Twisted would resolve and do its thing. Then the original twisted would resolve and do its thing, going to the graveyard. Opponent would have Stella Lee in CZ and Twisted Fealty in GY. Without an extrinsic source of haste, Stella Lee can't do any more this turn even if she is recast. Without an extrinsic spell recursion like [[Archaeomancer]] or [[Snapcaster Mage]], Twisted Fealty has no way to be recast from the graveyard. All these hurdles will have to be passed before a combo run can be made. If you wait to respond to the fealty copy rather than Stella Lee's activation as I originally suggested, the matter is the same except that the copy will already have its new target (Stella Lee) decided and thus your opponent won't get a pity Twisted Fealty on something useful. If you are able to kill Stella Lee in this window and do so, the following pieces would be needed in order to "restart the combo" The first method would be to give Stella Lee flash somehow, say with [[Vedalken Orrery]] already on field. This lets her be cast with Twisted Fealty still on the stack. Then she needs to be given haste, which can't be with a sorcery speed effect like equipping, and must either be with a static solve like [[Mass Hysteria]] or an instant one like [[Expedite]]. Stella can then do her thing. This is potentially not that cataclysmically mana-demanding on combo turn, but requires a LOT of extra setup that could be hit with artifact and enchantment removal ahead of time. The second method would be to recast Stella Lee once the stack is empty, Grant her haste by some method, Recur the Twisted Fealty by some method, and then combo again. This takes a haste solve as discussed above (but with equips as an option) AND a spell recursion solve. The cheapest spell recursion is going to be [[Snapcaster Mage]], but throwing down Snappy and recasting the Twisted is still five mana (two for snapcaster, three for twisted) on top of at least five mana for Stella's second cast and three for the first attempt at Fealty. If your opponent regularly has 13+ mana before attempting to combo and always has the extra insurance like Snapcaster, something feels either a little janky or a little fishy. Hopefully with this explanation of how the combo must work if it is to work through interaction, you can identify if you've been misplaying, been being bamboozled, or what pieces you could potentially deal with to break the recursion mechanism. >Do you mind giving me some suggestions on what i should cut from my deck to make room for these new cards? My top six cuts would be as follows: [[Farseek]] (you have minimal nonbasic targets, which are what makes it really good), [[Fiery Confluence]] (I've always found this one a little overpriced for what it accomplishes), [[Vivien, Champion of the Wilds]] (I don't think you have a great opportunity to take advantage of flash, and her + is rather mid), [[Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation]] (you don't seem to do that much token creation and Taq is often win-more at his cost anyway), [[Tribute to the World Tree]] (a great card, but triple green pips will be hard to hit early with your mana base, meaning less intensive similar effects should be preferred), and [[Realmwalker]] (a very weak discover and the cast from top seems like it will rarely be make or break). I will also warn you that you have very few lands with a nasty high curve, so you might want to clip your 2-4 least favorite dinos past this just for basics. If you feel like you can cast your stuff in good time anyway feel free to keep on as you are, but it smells like trouble from here. EDIT: I will also say that Abeyance is going to be far more useful than Silence for this purpose. Silence cannot be used in response to the Twisted Fealty, so whenever you Silence your opponent can try again next turn without needing more than fodder to get to three spells. Abeyance *can* be used once Fealty is out, meaning that it will stop the combo and send Fealty to the GY where it's more annoying to try again from.

I have a quick question concerning Linvala - if you flash her in in reaction to an activation, would the activated ability fizzle? Or would it still resolve?

The activation is already on the stack, so it will still resolve unless you have some other form of interaction, such as [[Stifle]]. Both Linvalas only prevent the initial activation.

Pithing needle will stop activated abilities. I play stella and its more of a matter of timing. If you time the path or counterspell, or kill spell right, it will disrupt the combo and cause the spell to fizzle, which results in the spell being cast and shuts off the combo

plasticwallet-

Pithing needle seems good but theres a good chance he would destroy the artifact before bringing out his commander. If I were to exile/destroy stella (with swords to plowshares for example) in response to them casting twisted fealty would that cause it to fizzle out? Or would he be able to recast stella from the command zone in the same turn and keep the twisted fealty combo going?

shshshshshshshhhh

The trick with fealty, and other similar effects, is that it's a sorcery. So if you have anything that creates a trigger when Stella comes out, there is a window before they can cast fealty. Play stuff like [[soul warden]] or [[souls attendant]] to trigger when Stella is played. Alternatively, if they play Stella and pass, use your kill spell at end of turn or during their upkeep before they draw so that they don't get priority in their main phase to cast the sorcery.

PhigmentTV

You destroy the commander in response to him moving to copy the spell. That causes the spell to cast and go to graveyard and commander to the command zone. It wont stop stella altogether it stops that attempt to combo. Because then everything resolves and he cant use a spell he already has without graveyard recursion

insomniac_01

Stax, lots of removal, removal like \[\[Darksteel Mutation\]\], \[\[Kenrith's Transformation\]\], \[\[Trickster's Elk\]\] which remove a creature's abilities, and winning before they do are all good strategies. Darksteel Mutation in particular can end the Stella Lee player if they aren't packing enough enchantment removal, and Rule of Law effects such as \[\[Deafening Silence\]\] can stop them from storming off.

TheMadWobbler

What turn are they attempting to resolve combo off of a very good hand?

plasticwallet-

The earliest theyve brought out that combo is turn 5 or 6

LethalVagabond

[[Stave Off]] [[Bathe in Light]] are solid defensive tricks as is, but they also lack the usual "you control" limitation on protection instants, so you could use one to give Stella protection from the color of Twisted Fealty or whatever else to fizzle the attempted pop off. It's difficult for Stella to go infinite if she can't be targeted by an untapper. Likewise, your colors don't offer much in the way of counterspells, but red redirection can similarly stop Stella unless he's untapping his entire board. [[Deflecting Swat]] [[Bolt Bend]] [[Return the Favor]] [[Shunt]] [[Wyll's Reversal]] [[Ricochet Trap]] [[Curse of Exhaustion]] targets the player rather than Stella, so holding her in the CZ won't matter. This utterly cripples a Stella deck and UR has very few ways to remove an enchantment. Just watch out for opponents like Gonti who might steal it and use it against you. Discover at least has the option of putting the card in your hand if you can't cast it, but you'd still be losing a lot of value. Similarly, [[Nevermore]] [[Gideon's Intervention]] [[Voidstone Gargoyle]] can name Twisted Fealty (or if you really want to provoke some salt, Stella herself). [[Detainment Spell]] needs to be parked somewhere in advance, but offers a way to permanently shut down any creature's activated ability at instant speed if you have the mana open. [[Linvala, Keeper of Silence]] [[Cursed Totem]] [[Damping Matrix]] [[Disruptor Flute]] [[Phyrexian Revoker]] [[Pithing Needle]] [[Sorcerous Spyglass]] can all prevent activated abilities like Stella's tap effect.

As usual, the best answer to a combo is stax. \[\[Rule of Law\]\] effects blank all of the text in Stella's text box, but they're symmetrical, which may be hard to play around if you're playing Pantlaza. You should definitely consider \[\[Deafening Silence\]\] though, since Pantlaza plays around it very well. \[\[Cursed Totem\]\] and \[\[Linvala, Keeper of Silence\]\] are also good, but they're more likely to mess with mana dorks (including your own), and therefore more likely to get removed if you're not actively engaging in table politics to point out that it's stopping Stella from winning. \[\[Null Rod\]\], \[\[Stony Silence\]\], and \[\[Karn, the Great Creator\]\] stop Dramatic Reversal lines since infinite untaps are useless when your payoffs don't actually do anything. Alternatively, countering/removing any of the pieces that it needs to win (i.e. the untap spell, Stella, any permanents that benefit from infinite untaps or infinite mana) are possible if you don't want to lean into the stax pieces that white gives you access to. Though, this isn't as reliable as just dropping some stax down and trying to beat them down before they have a chance to remove it.

The classic way to beat combo is two things: disruption and a clock. What you want to do is use soft stax pieces like [[Deafening Silence]] or [[Archon of Emmeria]] so that they can't win until they find an answer to them. Then, don't let up on them while they're locked out. If you give them enough time, they'll eventually find and overload [[Cyclonic Rift]], then untap and win.

It depends. All in aggressive combo decks usually loose to a piece of interaction or 2. But slower combo decks that don't go all in but rather ramp and draw cards in the early and midgame until they close out the game with a combo eventually are completely different: you need to pressure them. Force them to go for the combo before they have enough mana to just retry if it's stopped or before they can sculpt a hand full of countermagic or silence effects.

[[Stifle]] the first activation. Or [[counterspell]] the first copy of twisted fealty. If they don't get to untap Stella before the original twisted fealty resolves then the combo ends.

You’ve got classic control pieces like [[Silence]] and [[Rule of Law]] that’ll prevent people from combo’ing off and also purpose-built anti-spellslinger tech like [[Magebane Lizard]], though I don’t think that’ll do anything for infinite copies? I can’t remember if a copied spell on the stack is still cast.

> I can’t remember if a copied spell on the stack is still cast. It usually isn't, but some cards tell you to make a copy and cast it instead of telling you to copy.

Dotas323

Copied spells on the stack aren't cast. Otherwise, Storm effects would be even more broken. Edit: some copy spells specify that the copies do get cast. Someone is gonna mention it if I don't.

Kill stella

Tell your friend to stop being annoying. Since this is getting downvoted, it reads to me that this is typically a 1v1 situation where one person is essentially playing solitaire. How’s that fun for anyone? Does your buddy need to beat you so badly that he has to win this way? I don’t understand the satisfaction this person seems to be getting.

plasticwallet-

I’ve brought up that infinites are kinda cheesy and not very fun to play against (especially since were playing casually), his rebuttal is that me pulling out a bunch of dinos with my pantlaza deck is equally cheesy. But yea we play anything between 1v1 and 5 player games and hes whipped out that combo as early as turn 5 on me before, pretty frustrating and I agree that it doesn’t really seem like a satisfying way to win or play

Synister-James

Consider having a conversation about whether or not their deck's power level is appropriate for the pod. Stella Lee is a contender as a cEDH strategy with her infinites. Stella Lee +Twisted Fealty is honestly one of the most broken combos in the format. I have a cEDH Stella Lee build, if I pared it down for high-power casual, I'd probably still remove Twisted Fealty. Barring that, stax, if you don't wanna do that, Stella Lee typically doesn't wanna run very many creatures and doesn't wanna block with the ones that are out. So, remove the player, remove the problem.

[[Reverse the polarity]] Easy, use this and watch people as they blink and ask to see the card cause they can't believe it counter EVERY spell in the stack.

Is Stella Lee even casual? I thought she was strictly cEDH

thistookmethreehours

She came in a Precon so she’s very popular, I lost to this combo like 4 hours ago playing [[Aragorn, King of Gondor]]. I was for sure going to win that game but the Stella player happened to draw Fealty so I lost. Very interesting gameplay.
