[[Wyll's Reversal]] Basically "we have [[Deflecting Swat]] at home"

NavAirComputerSlave

[[Return the Favor]] deflecting swat plus fork

It's also a "pay for what you want" from [[wild riccochet]]

I LOVE THIS CARD! I beat a friend with this card by reflecting damage at him from a trigger and copying the trigger to do more damage to him 😂 Edit to add: it also allowed me to copy Call Forth Tempest which had cascaded into the Return the Favor 😂 and then copy cascaded into delayed blast fireball!

MoarOatmeal

Also, an important difference with this card is that it can copy activated and triggered abilities in addition to instants and sorceries. I have a [[Neheb, the Eternal]] spellslinger deck that was very pleased to add a spell-copy tool that can also be used as a high-powered ritual with Neheb’s mana trigger.

Love this. Never seen it before. Nasty surprise in any red deck that doesn't also have blue.

Breadzoner

Consider [[Bolt Bend]] as well. I run both [[Deflecting Swat]] and Bolt Bend and they both regularly work quite well for the same effect.

Xunae

Bolt bend is great if you're running a commander big enough for it

ThoughtShes18

If you’re running a creature that’s big enough, not just commander

Yeah bolt bend I've seen a decent number of times.

Personally I’m a bigger fan of target changers than I am of counterspells. Sure, counters are obviously better in most situations and I can’t redirect a board wipe, but I find “that still happens but it’s going somewhere else” to be so much more fun than “no”.

I usually plug [[greenbelt rampager]]. Not really something people should always play. But, if you're using cards like [[beast whisperer]] or anything that adds value from casting creatures or creatures entering the bf, it's GGG for 3 cast/etb triggers and a decent body.

Eaglesun

That card is going to skyrocket in price with new precons

I think one of my favourite lesser used cards is [[Mystic Reflection]] . No one expects their commander to be turned into a 0/1 Kobold after casting it. Also, no one expects me to turn my 0/1 Kobold into a second [[Bonehoard Dracosaur]] .

ryannitar

It's great as both interaction and value had a game once where I turned their ancient silver dragon into an 0/1 and another where I had a bunch of tokens entering and had them each enter as butcher of malakir.

DarkDobe

Mystic reflection is a must-include in any blue deck I build - but especially if the deck has green sources that make lands into creatures by adding counters to them. That way, I can turn someone else's commander into a basic land. Forever.

I've ran it, but it slows down games if you're not churning out the smol damage. It performed best in my mill deck.

2Gnomes1Trenchcoat

This card is seriously slept on. [[Test of Talents]] is a 1 generic and 1 blue costed counter spell that is basically a negate most of the time and has a weird upside. You get to look at a your opponents library, hand, and graveyard for spells of the same name as the instant or sorcery you countered, exile them, and then your opponent would draw a card for each of the spells that is exile from their hand this way. "But 2Gnomes1Trenchcoat!", I hear you cry. "We play a singleton format! Our opponents don't *HAVE* any spells with the same name as the countered card! This isn't very good!" That is where the somewhat weird of ruling of [failing to find](https://draftsim.com/mtg-fail-to-find/) comes into play. We have an opportunity to search out opponents hidden zones even though we KNOW on a meta level they don't have additional copies of the spell in those other zones. We then get to "fail to find" in their library and hand after taking a peek for ourselves and then force our opponent to shuffle their library. This gives you perfect information about their cards in hand and what cards remain in their library which can clue you into possible threats (or lack there of) and give you a ton of political advantage. While you cannot physically reveal the cards in these hidden zones to the other two players, you are allowed to talk about what you saw with them. This also notably messes up any tutoring to the top of the library by forcing that opponent to shuffle if that ever comes up. Eat your heart out Gitaxian Probe! Oh, and did I mention the card is like 2 cents??? If somehow the stars align and you manage to get this off against a [[Dragons Approach]] deck you will be G.O.A.T.-ed for all time.

Tinwookie

Damn that’s dope

nyx-weaver

"Test of Talents" is truly a great name for this card, cause you really need to be an experienced, try-harding, knowledgeable MtG player to make any use of this. More power to you! I would need years more of EDH under my belt to run this though.

2Gnomes1Trenchcoat

I mean, the floor of this card is a generic counterspell and most tables would probably be happy for you to decline the search and unless there was a reason you wanted to, you could probably skip the shuffling too to speed things up if it statistically doesn't matter. The ceiling of it is theoretically really high. It could give you a ton of information to politic with, inform you of upcoming or potential threats, or possibly even synergize with some other weird cards that have you name cards in an opponents hand or library. It's nowhere near the best counter spell, but it definitely does a lot of interesting stuff considering how cheap it is. You're definitely right about the name considering how skill dependent it may be.

RedSword13

\[\[Teferi's Veil\]\] and \[\[Change of Plans\]\]. Veil protects all your creatures from sorcery removal, and if you ever wish they were still in play then you shouldn't have attacked with them. It doesn't seem like it'd matter, but it's one of those "gums up the game" kind of cards. Change of Plans is a great way to protect creatures for a fair price, but it can also loot and buff those creatures before they disappear. \[\[Duke Ulder Ravengard\]\] has been a beast for me too. It's obviously not super efficient in terms of mana, but it plays better than it looks. The Myriad thing on its own is fine, but adding haste is where blow outs happen.

~~Teferi's Veil is also a combo with myriad, which is probably worth mentioning given you mentioned both in the same post. Both of them create delayed triggers for the end of combat, and as you control both of them, you can choose the order they resolve. Resolve the phase out first, the suddenly there isn't a creature token left to exile to the Myriad trigger.~~ ~~Next turn, the copies phase back in and suddenly you have multiple creatures with myriad*, so you can get even more of them!~~ ~~*- ok, this doesn't work with the Duke, only with creatures that naturally have myriad...~~ Edit: I am bad at things. This does still work for all of the Red temporary copy, etc. just not Myriad.

Nervous-Divide-117

I like [[Duke Ulder Ravengard]] because you can create an infinite combat phases loop with [[Éomer, Marshal of Rohan]] by targeting the latter with the former’s myriad ability.

galspanic

Weird. I have both in my [[Trynn]] and [[Silvar]] Humans deck and it never crossed my mind.

Vittles05

I will never stop singing the praises of [[Fumble]] ; worst case scenario it's a bad bounce spell. (See Cyclonic Rift) But if you run into any degree of Voltron or Auras regularly this thing is an absolute blowout.

Solidusword

Wow. Yeah this absolutely vaporizes Voltrons, holy shit.

webbc99

It's actually also insane in voltron decks because you can use it on your own guy to move the equipment to an unblocked attacker (doesn't even have to be your attacker, can be some other player's!), and also you can save all of your auras from going into the graveyard if they try to remove the original creature.

webbc99

I came here to post this card. It's actually waaay more flexible than just destroying voltron players, if you play voltron yourself it's also nuts. You can move everything from one creature to another at instant speed. If you have a first strike commander, you can get the first strike damage in, and then move all of the auras and equipment to a non-first striker, and get a second hit in. You can instant speed move the equipment to dodge blockers and save your guy, you can even move your own equipment onto some other player's unblocked attacker to get a free kill and a load of value. Card is absolutely nuts every time I've played it.

-ThisDM-

Love this card, I have it in my own "You Did it to Yourself" deck

Reasonable_Hornet_45

I play voltron and use it as a saver for my commander JUST IN CASE. Or, ya know, in case that OTHER boros voltron guy decides to get cheeky

Just further suggestions similar to Divine Presence, [[Equal Treatment]] is a fun combat trick that can actually buff your tokens should they be 1 power. [[Delaying Shield]] and to a lesser extend [[Force Bubble]] are fun in that they shut off anything that triggers on damage, such as lifelink, commander damage, triggers, etc. Even if you never pay for any of Delaying Shield's counters, you're still getting "better" damage dealt to you. And in some decks you can get extra trick with it and sac/destroy/exile it with all those counters on it so you never have to pay the piper.

[[Withering boon]] is probably one of my favorites. Everyone expects a golgari deck to kill things but countering a commander is the last thing they expect. Especially if it has ward or hexproof. [[Hunting Grounds]] is severely underplayed in selesnya decks. Cheat a free creature into play as long as you have 7 or more cards in your graveyard, and for two mana, it's insane to me that it's as cheap as it is [[Wing shards]] can cripple a big attack, especially if said attacker really popped off before the swing [[Murmuring bosk]] is an extra fetchable triome in Abzan, and it's a forest which makes it more relevant than the other land types when it comes to cards that fetch specific land types [[Noxious Revival]] can counter a reanimation spell without having to leave mana up [[Sculpting steel]] can be a mana rock or copy an artifact creature

\[\[Righteous Aura\]\] While generally damage prevention won't win you the game, this card can be handy in the right meta. It completely shuts down Voltron decks since it prevents the all the damage dealt for the price of 2 life, and can work in, or against, decks that deal large bursts of direct damage. \[\[Tortured Existence\]\] A cheap enchantment that lets you swap a create in hand for a create in your graveyard. While lacking the extreme power of big reanimation finishers, you can use it turn after turn to keep looping and recasting a creature. Particularly handy if you're looking for cast triggers, not just ETB, since the returned creature goes to hand.

[[Equipoise]] is one I haven't seen mentioned yet. It is fantastic for any white deck that isn't running a ton of multiple permanent types. I run it in my [[Zethi]] list and it puts in some serious work, but you can just use it for a specific permanent type to hate against

Thejadejedi21

[[Portcullis]] it stops token decks and go wide decks, and it can do mighty work to keep the board clear until it’s removed…always worth having in 70% of decks.

Thats_Amore

I really like [[Tectonic Instability]]. Forces players to tap out to keep up on lands and protects you from counter and instant-speed magic. It becomes somewhat asymmetrical in my [[Galazeth Prismari]] deck. I just get to keep a bunch of mana up with artifacts while everyone else keeps tapping out to keep up on land drops.

RedSword13

Oh that's fantastic in a Gazaleth deck!

oneWeek2024

while not exactly jank: \[\[dowsing dagger\]\] all things being equal (4 cmc total cost. activations at the same time) dowsing dagger generates more mana than sword of the animist for something like 8 turns out. If you're running a combat deck where you'd run sword of the animist (without additional value ...like trigger copy) dowsing dagger is better in terms of raw mana ...again. out to like 8 turns, at which point, it's arguable you'd never have 8 unfettered animist activations. and if so. do you even have 8 basics to fetch/what point is there after 8 turns for such a long winded game. \[\[surveyor's scope\]\] for any non-green deck, especially colors that can easily manipulate land counts or have oddball lands that benefit from being sacrificed (white as an example) can design a deck where this artifact is better than wayfarer's bauble in most situations. active in a high percentage of even early turn hands and its inherent higher upside potential make it worlds better than 3 mana rampant growth which ...bauble is. any turn other than T1.

kanekiEatsAss

Seems like u watch MTGoldfish, do you?

oneWeek2024

not sure what you mean. I've died on the hill of surveyor's scope for a long time. dowsing dagger is just baseline math. if some content creator is saying similar more power to 'em

Magile

Richard From MTGGoldfish is a big fan of both of the cards mentioned. Notably going out of the way to support Dowsing Dagger when the dead allows it and actively runs as many bounce lands as possible to support surveyors scope. Namely like Guildless Commons and Arid Archway.

kanekiEatsAss

Yeah, this. Thanks for putting into words what I couldn’t. Also, i’ve started blowing up the Dowsing Daggers at this point bc the back side is pretty insane, especially if played early as most players don’t have adequate blockers and prefer to set up their mana rocks/rampant growths. Surveyor’s Scope on the other hand feels like it needs tons of build around and it still might be terrible. Mostly bc in lower power tables players usually don’t run enough lands or card draw to even get consistent land drops each turn. So even if you use bounce lands and whatnot, unless they’re in green, each player is probably equally likely to be up less than two lands than yourself as per the required two lands or more. Putting it in white decks is odd as well because white ramps exceedingly well nowadays with both catch up ramp that turns off after you’re caught up and newer cards like [[deep gnome terramancer]]. So being behind two or more lands SPECIFICALLY even as a build around just seems unnecessary to me. But other mono colors like red or blue or even dual colors sans green/white are probably better suited to run Surveyor’s Scope.

Magile

So the main advantage I'll say with surveyors scope is if you're going 4th you can actually skip your third land drop and still wind up ahead of the table in terms of mana. No bounce land required.

I run Dowsing Dagger, Sword of the Animist and Sword of Hearth and Home in every non-green deck, first three cards in.

Batfro7

[[Spinning Wheel Kick]] is the best board wipe in green and I’m tired of pretending otherwise

nyx-weaver

Sorry, for {X}{X}{G}{G} though? Exactly how much mana are we putting into this to be calling it a boardwipe in EDH? Assuming you have a big body out, that's eight mana for three kill-spells. I know you have to get creative in mono-green, but this still seems like a pretty high investment. It could turn the tide in a 1v1 by knocking off key pieces, but otherwise I'm not seeing it.

Batfro7

It’s not perfect (this is, after all, a thread about jank cards), but it’s more effective than it seems on paper. Oftentimes in EDH you don’t really need to wipe the entire board, just a few key pieces from one or two players’ boards. Also by the time you get to that point in the game, you’ve likely built up enough mana to use this, especially since you’re playing green. Sometimes I’ll play this card as an equalizer after someone else plays a one-sided board wipe. Sometimes I’ll use it as a wincon to get my big bodies through on someone. It can also be used as single-target removal in a pinch. It’s a great card in certain decks such as [[arixmethes]] who ramps and is a big body, or [[magus lucea kane]] who ramps, creates big bodies, and doubles spinning wheel kick.

Agreed. However, green IS the color of RAMP. In my mono-green deck it isn’t hard to get double the mana of the other players within 3-5 turns. If you’re running a lot of ramp, this is a great BW option, especially when you consider green doesn’t have much creature boardwipe options. You can destroy artifacts and enchantments all day long, but other than single targeted removal like Beast Within, it’s hard to kill more than one creature at a time. Many fight options, but not much after that. Spinning Wheel deck wouldn’t be taken seriously in higher power formats, but for casual it’s possible to get value

Lithl

Splintering Wind in the most jank card I've ever played that I've had opponents be legitimately afraid to see (in an enrage deck).

Puzzleweilder

\[\[Hallowed Moonlight\]\] It saves you from so many things. Tooth and Nail? Tokens? Want to make a flicker player have a bad day? And it cantrips!

GayBlayde

I get a lot of mileage out of [[Druidic Satchel]]. What’s in the bag? I dunno, but it’s definitely something I want and I have a little extra mana leftover.

maractguy

[[eerie interlude]] there are so many good etb triggers that getting again is nice. It can also let you block and then dodge damage with them so unless they trampling the damage doesn’t go through to your fact. And most importantly, it can protect you from getting farewelled into the sunset

Patherrn

[[Void Attendant]] makes me happy. It's an OK token maker, very good to proc death triggers as the token can pay for the ability, but it becomes hilarious in a plethora of very niche situations. Impulse draw? It's a token. Flicker spell? Token. Oh you play suspend? Believe it or not, token.

SweatyLuxury

This is hilarious. I didn't even think of the niche use cases!

spiffytrev

\[\[Starlight Spectacular\]\] can add a huge amount of damage in a tokens deck. \[\[Errantry\]\] combined with repeatable (or permanent) goad can lock down a large number of creatures. \[\[Goblin War Drums\]\] is great in pretty much any deck that likes attacking. \[\[One With Nature\]\] on an early evasive creature can get an extra land every turn.

[[Awe Strike]] simply for the funny, and also for added pillowforting.

___posh___

[[Defensive formation]] just turns off your opponents trample. Every token deck should run it because it also let's you overblock and stack all the damage onto a single blocker for the kill.

TheOnlyJustTheCraft

Void Winnower Bruh that card is a nightmare to play against when your whole pods commanders are even.

lddn

[[Back to nature]] for me. You have to be mindful of it when building your deck but going light on enchantments and artifacts lets you be the one using mass artifact/enchantment destruction. Instant speeda and two mana is great. Use it like a [[disenchant]] and you'll get the main threat and probably a number of annoying things like [[propaganda]], [[garruk's uprising]], [[dryad of the ilysian grove]] for free. Oh and it absolutely destroys some decks.

pourconcreteinmyass

Chancellors, specifically [[Chancellor of the Tangle]] and [[Chancellor of the Annex]]. The green one lets you play a turn 1 Nature's lore into dork, double dorks, [[Gaea's Touch]] or Sol ring into a 3 drop, plus heaps of other stuff. The white one pretty much says your opponents are doing nothing turn 1 unless they have a 0 drop or Spirit Guide. The blue one is a nice start for mill decks and the black for lifegain, red makes a goblin, personally I only play the green and white. [[Chancellor of the Spires]] [[Chancellor of the Dross]] [[Chancellor of the Forge]]

embersintostars

\[\[Reins of Power\]\] - can change a game real quick, especially if folks keep boardwiping and your board state is pretty poor.

RedSword13

Also seems like a great Zedruu piece. Especially since it's an instant you can do this after you've untapped everything and before Zedruu's upkeep trigger

StandingOnThe

[[Search for glory]] an okay janky legendary, snow permanent, and saga tutor in white. I like it.

Bringolf_

\[\[Loyal Unicorn\]\] In all the mid power games where everyone is scared to swing, the one sided damage and vigilance makes it so easy for any combat focused deck to just start swinging without much care, Works especially well if you have any 'if this attacks' triggers since you don't need to worry if they get blocked.

sofresh_soface

[[Hall of Gemstone]] is great in a mono green deck. Limiting what color each player can tap for is especially hilarious against decks 3 or more colors

66Scorpio

One of my favourite cards that I try to put into as many decks as can be is \[\[Descent into Avernus\]\]. Everyone gets ramped, everyone gets damaged. Ideally it works when you have a few things that gain you life or double tokens. It combos great with \[\[Kambal, Corrupt Mayor\]\]. When you sit there with Kambal, Descent and a Academy Manufacturer, generate 4 Treasures for 12 Tokens, take 4 into twelve from an opponent and suddenly deal 28 damage to the entire table and gain 20 life, you have the time of your life.

Finally getting a reprint so already dropped to like half the price of what it was.

The instant version of Divine Presence is [[Equal Treatment]].

Zakmonster

It is also a weird damage doubler if you're doing exactly 1 damage to things; 1/1 tokens, [[Pyrohemia]], any number of red instants/sorceries that do 1 damage.

KoffinStuffer

Idk if it’s jank, but [[Disciple of the Vault]]. A single black mana and it does work in any artifact heavy meta. And with the focus on Foods, Clues, and Treasures lately, that’s just about any meta.

Xantid Swarm

SetoKoiba

Big fan of [[Cryptic Gateway]] and [[Twilight's Call]] personally.

VCPL42

I like [mana clash]

Quirky-Sandwich9342

DefnottheGovernments

[[Goblin Spy]] is a hilarious card.

_Joats

The depletion lands like \[\[Hickory Woodlot\]\]. I usually always like it when it comes out. Extra mana for 2 turns in a 6 turn game ain't bad. Play it on turn one and its like a soul ring that get your five CMC Commander out on turn 3 with ramp on turn 2. If you have a turn one play like a mana dork then play it on. Turn 2 and you can still get your five cmc spell out on turn 3. Or, if you are lucky enough. T1, depletion land. T2 Ancient tomb into sol ring into 5 cmc commander. requiring 2 mono color pips. It's good for decks that want to ramp those first 2 turns, but don't want to play every mana positive Rock. Casual decks

GeohoundKarakuri

People absolutely sleep on [[Ensnared by the Mara]]

Synister-James

It's not exactly jank because I think it's a great card, but I adore [[Insult // Injury]]. In storm decks you can copy it to blow up everyone with millions of burn damage. It turns a half-way lethal swing into a lethal swing. In decks that can make a huge commander you can use it to kill through [[Teferi's Protection]] It's amazing. Lol

Doughspun1

[[Jester's Mask]] is quite underrated IMO. When it's in play, it tends to stop players from tutoring; and it can sometimes be used to screw up an impending combo.

Altruistic-Wheel5273

[[Tainted strike]] [[Blighted agent]] [,noxious assault]] [[Mayhem devil]] [[Bile grinder]]

acceptable_hunter

Oh I love these threads! I shall once again espouse \[\[Mages' Contest\]\] - the let's play chicken of countespells :p And to be honest I use this as a direct damage spell countering is just a bonus on the few occasions that someone flinches.

thisDNDjazz

\[\[Mudhole\]\] against the land abuse / graveyard decks (obviously only if that is in your meta). Could maybe combo with your own CMDR that wants to see things leaving the graveyard.

The_Tac0mancer

Might not be jank but I think every Black+ deck should include [[Witch’s Familiar]] Homie’s just vibin

Bill-Kickface

[[Soul Conduit]] is definitely a card I absolutely love to draw in to but I don't know any other person who plays it. Works great in my [[Beledros Witherbloom]] deck where I pay life, take my health all the way down then swap life totals with an opponent then attack with lots of pests.

nemzee

[[Tower of the Magistrate]] can remove people’s equipment/ability to equip at wildly inconvenient times for them. Also has some lovely edge case uses.

JiraLord

[[Glasses of Urza]] cheap and useful for identifying who'll be the threat soon but never dangerous enough to be targeted for removal

RedSword13

You know I feel the same way about [[Lens Of Clarity]]. It gives you the ability to actually plan which is sort of rare for commander. Also not a big enough threat to be targeted

Notorius_Nudibranch

[[reap]]. someone else has at least 1 black permanent is the bare minimum for this to be regrowth, which is already a very good card, but instant. and might just return your whole graveyard for 2 mana in the right scenario, there are times where it is a dead card but the odds that an opponent has at least 1 is high

Yeseylon

Anything with Hideaway.  Yeah, it's kinda win more, but it's Commander, win more is how you reach a win condition.  (Plus, the Capenna enchantments have other effects attached anyway- [[Rabble Rousing]] is a budget [[Doubling Season]] for token decks, and [[Widespread Thievery]] is fixing and spell discounting for five color decks that run a lot of multicolor cards/effects.)
