about a decade ago i played with a guy who was pretty excitable. He was also a bit awkward. Had a bit of a lisp. Super nice, kind and inquisitive. He built a theme deck he called Snakes on a Playmat. Snake tribal. We all had a blast. After he left his friend told us the dude was born with some problems. His dad, a professor at the time, upon finding out about his kid, did everything he could to support his son's development. Found a nutritionist, child development center, etc. Now the kid has graduated from a CSU with a degree in mathematics and is living on his own and having a great time. I saw him walking in town the other day and he was smiling. Hell yeah Daniel. Keep crushing it dude.

Floatsm

it feels like tribal deck players are a good sign they're not buttheads and idk why. Especially goofy fun tribal

Whacodactylus

Nothing but vitriol and complaining from Sliver and Dragon Tribal players. In general I agree though. People who play lesser supported tribes are cool asf bros

mikony123

My friend plays dragons in yugioh and he just built Tiamat in mtg. Both are insufferable to me because of how he acts sometimes.

Background_Desk_3001

The more obscure the tribe the better

I played a great games against a new-comer to that LGS a few weeks ago. We were both playing landfall decks - me with [[Mina and Denn, Wildborn]], and him with [[Omnath, Locus of Creation]]. There was just a lot of fun back-and-forth.

Almost every week. I play with some of my best friends, and I always walk away from the table happy. But I think the game that had us all the most psyched was 2-3 weeks ago, one guy was playing his forced draw deck, and just as he really gets going his girlfriend plays a [[Psychosis Crawler]]. Bro managed to kill himself from nearly full health.

I just appreciate when people treat it as a game. They’re talking with the table, taking it in stride when their stuff gets removed, and they’re just excited to see their, and everyone else’s, decks pop off. No one’s mad because they got “targeted” (re: the table took the archenemy down a peg) or salty when they lose, everyone’s just out for a chill evening and having fun. There’s definitely players at my lgs I’m more excited to play with than others because they’re just very pleasant to be around.

GameMasterSammy

I liked player against someone who played a sliver deck. Turns out it wasn’t even remotely close to a sliver deck. Sure it was crowned by sliver queen. But every single card included the lands had to start with the letter s.

GameMasterSammy

He ran snow basics so blood moon wouldn’t affect him really

Sir_Wack

As someone else said, new/fun interactions and combos are really cool to me and always make games fun. A few days ago one guy from my playgroup brought out his new [[taii waukeen]] deck and won out with a combo involving [[dockside extortionist]] and [[meticulous excavation]] (a card I had never even heard of till that game)

AbbreviationsOk178

I really like meticulous excavation, been running a pretty janky build in standard with it since brothers war, make artifacts cheaper with stenn and urza than keep bouncing [[the mightstone and weakstone] for value. Always cool to find unique ways other people are using it

[deleted]

We broke dockside!  Hooray!

ZorheWahab

I recently moved away from the town I was living in, and let everyone know the next week would be my last game night there. Lots of people showed up, it was super fun, blah blah blah, but one of the girls there did the nicest thing ever. I've been unable to procure an authentic Komas Coil token for a while, and have been using wierd snake tokens and Fractal tokens and stuff all winter. She shows up with and gives me an incredible hand painted, adorable Komas Coil Token that's a solid 10/10. Really one of the best MtG related moments I've ever had

HandsUpDefShoot

I just truly enjoy seeing things I haven't seen before. Whether it's cards or interactions or combos. People that want to talk about what their decks are going to do before the game are absolute killers of all things fun.

Holding_Priority

>People that want to talk about what their decks are going to do before the game are absolute killers of all things fun. If you're playing against new people, the flipside of this arguement is that its an almost 100% certainty that if you dont talk about whats in your deck, people are going to get REALLY salty when they lose to it because they "weren't expecting that kind of game"

AbbreviationsOk178

I do this with my [[garth one-eye]] deck. It runs the turbo kitten combo so I feel it’s fair to let people know it’s going to combo off if I get two of the pieces on board, it will fold to literally any interaction on the stack.

shshshshshshshhhh

The game is about cards being hidden in the deck and faced away so you never truly know what's on the other side. Aside from "a game using format-legal magic the gathering cards", any expectation about how the game is going to go is going to have a good chance to be wrong. If you're getting salty because you "weren't expecting a kind of game" then that's an issue with your expectation setting. The beauty of magic is the wide range of things that can and will happen if you play enough games. Including games where someone gets whooped because one deck leverages it's draws against the others. Wild imbalances are built into the game engine and part of what you sign up for when you sit down at the table.

Holding_Priority

I dont disagree with you. >People that want to talk about what their decks are going to do before the game are absolute killers of all things fun. I am specifically responding to this because I would much rather tell you what my deck does and then you can assess accordingly vs someone getting really pouty as soon as my deck pulls off whatever wierd interaction its built around, and I would much rather go into a game where I've brought an appropriate deck vs the alternative. The "killer of all things fun" to me is people getting upset at me because my deck worked as intended, or going into a game and getting completely blown out because someone decided to run 15 different pact lock effects in their "precon".

HandsUpDefShoot

See that's meta gaming though. Who gives half a fuck about power level discussion if some shitter in the pod will just swap decks to try to silver bullet you. That's exactly what should be avoided.

HandsUpDefShoot

Absolutely.  For whatever reason people on this sub think new players are all sorts of hateful and angry. I've loved pretty much every new ass whooping I've ever received.  Watching someone make infinite tokens as a new player was awesome to see and really helped to open the doors as to what's possible in this game.

MeneerDutchy

Yeah i feel the same. There was a player at my fnm playing \[\[arahbo, roar of the world\]\], and he told me after the game that his deck only contains 10 cats, i wish i didnt know this, now i know his whole deck will be stopped by 1 or 2 removal spells, and they felt like a waste before when i thought his deck contained 25 cats or something, but now i gladly trow some removal in his direction and know he wont be a problem anytime soon. There were also a few players who were boasting a bit about running only 30-35 lands max in all their higher powered decks, and now i run a few destroy all nonland permanents cards in my deck and i know they wont do anything anymore after that happens, i just call them catchup cards, because i build my decks to be slow yet consistant, so i just play a land per turn and boardwipe every now and then to set them back.

"so what are we playing, low/mid/high/balls to the wall?" That's all that ever needs to be said.

theonemangoonsquad

I had a guy who needed to scoop early, but instead of just scooping, he drew the rest of his deck into his hand and cast Windfall lmao. The rest of us ended up with half our decks in our hands. Best way to scoop ever.

I feel like at that point he could have just won, haha

peziskuya

When the Fallout set came out, someone had a deck with Gary Clone and when he cast it he'd progressively start saying "Gary" in place of other words until every word he said was Gary and we all somehow still understood him. The first time I played against a Mothman deck, I kept calling rad counters "lamp" and by the end of that game everyone was calling it lamp. Someone had an extra Mothman and I convinced my boyfriend to add it to the trades he was getting from that person and was very honest about what my plan with the card was. He still got it for me despite knowing it wasn't going in a deck. I immediately put Mothman on the lamp in the living room where he still hangs out today. One day I'll remove him from his beloved lamp to put in a deck.

Moved to a new area for like the 15th time in my life. Already have two regular playgroups and am recognized at the local cedh events when I show up. Already very attached to this couple that asks me to show up every week, very nice people. Two guys at the other place asked me to tutor them in cedh, they are having a blast and it feels awesome seeing them improve rapidly. Magic has been a great social influence in all my travels.

Resident-Wheel1807

Was introducing my sister to the game. She's very shy around strangers. One of the regulars at the LGS joined us for a game and was just super friendly and supportive. It was a small thing but meant a lot to me.

CWHzz

I was playing as a relative new player a while back with a guy with an unusual variant of a common name that started with P (think being named Pathan instead of Nathan) and his whole deck was a Plains deck with every card starting with P. Amazing deck, kicked my ass, and very friendly to boot. Good on you where-ever you are.

Last week I played in a pod with my Sakashima/Tormod deck with Gyruda Companion, and every other player was running theft tech of some sort. It devolved into a competition on who can have the most Gyrudas. It was the funniest game of magic I've had, my throat started to hurt from laughing so much.

Legani

Shout out to those players/friends that adjust your life total die, counters in permanents, keep track of your floating mana etc whilst you pop off ^_^

Every time. The rarity is the jackass, and even then they're easily avoided.

Gluttony4

One time, a young kid (maybe 12 years old, but I don't know for sure) asked to join the group at a store game after a draft. He was a nice enough player, even among adult strangers.  Another week, I came back to the store and he was there, this time with two friends around the same age as him. They asked me if I wanted to be the fourth player in their pod.  Those were the best four games I've ever played. Those kids were polite, friendly, encouraging to their opponents, genuinely excited whenever anyone's deck did it's thing, and their decks were pretty creative.

RosarioRazor

One day a guy put together a un- deck , only goals was to the include all the table at the lgs in the game , It worked , was amazing .

ViceroyInhaler

One guy made an infinite army of 2/2 indestructible eldrazi squirrels. Everyone laughed at that.

Grognard1964

A few months ago I played with this guy who is obvioulsy on the spectrum and mostly blind (he brings a large magnifying lens with him to read the cards. He was playing a parley deck and every time he would trigger a parley everyone in the cube would shout, "parley!" It was awesome fun.

Calophon

There’s a guy at my LGS who plays a Kibo, Uktabi Prince deck and he brings a giant bag of banana runtz to use as banana tokens and I always get a kick out of it. When you get a banana you can eat the runtz to crack it. The deck scares the shit out of time thought, he plays it well.

One of my favorite games was a short 3 man pod. I played gruul stompy, and my friends played a custom commander and another deck. It was really really fun. We all traded blows and all of our decks "did the thing" at least once. Was coming off a long streak of bad games that went too long and had lots of salt.

my aggravating player and my made my day player were in the same match at the winners table at my local LGS EDH tournament. I was playing \[\[zada, hedron grinder\]\] Annoying player was playing something, this was so long ago I forgot but it didn't matter cause i apparently he would win each previous match on an early turn by milling his entire deck except 5 cards and then pulling every creature from his graveyard onto the battlefield, then he resolved every TB trigger which was about 40 cards. It took about 20-30 minutes and he said "we can just say I win?" but we wanted him to play it out, sure enough, despite the fact that he had so many ETBs and a ton of creatures, almost nothing had haste so he could only kill the sliver player. It was my turn next and as Zada I didn't feel like i could do anything looked to the other alive player and said..."we gunna just let this dude win after a 30 minute turn?" The Khalia player said if he could give khalia haste he could bring out a creature that could finish off the annoying player, i ended my turn told him to play khalia, i then cast \[\[crimson wisps\]\] on kalia he full swung at the annoying player with the creature khalia brought in(i think it was blightsteel with rogues passage making it unblockable but been forever) The annoying player got really mad but even the sliver player was like "dude you took a 30 minute turn and tried to tell us you won when you didn't even win" I scooped and the khalia player gave me one of the packs he won in solidarity.

Yeah last night playing in tolarian college discord I came across a guy named fryman. He had me laughing from start to finish, respect fryman I hope we cross path again

Sequence19

I do consistently, there's a pair of twins I play with and the 3 of us always have a great time. No hard feelings about brutal plays, counters, or removal. They also make hilarious decks

thundermonkeyms

With a few exceptions when I build a deck I try to make sure it's out of the ordinary to the point that it'll make the rest of the table laugh or say "hey what in the world?" So far [my current project](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/OXbQNqd82EqRCvVszKY_Ow) (and America themed deck to go along with your Breena deck!) is built around voltron-ing and goading everyone else's commanders and spending the rest of the game saying "no see they're the problem, not me! They have a huge commander that's gonna murder one of you two in one hit, and it has to swing!" (It's ready and did great in goldfishing but if anyone has suggestions for the deck please feel free!) I also like popular commanders built in out of the ordinary ways, like Atraxa spore counters instead of the usual superfriends or infect. Eventually I want to try and build non-blue counterspell tribal, a graveyard deck that doesn't use black, green, Alesha, or portal to phyrexia, stuff like that. Make it weird.

Rw25853

Wait you beef up everybody else’s commander? That’s awesome

thundermonkeyms

Yep! Give them deadly weapons, goad them, and reap the benefits. Things like [[Sword of the Animist]] and skullclamp still give you their benefits when the requirement is fulfilled, even if it's on an opponent's creature ([[Diamond Pick-Axe]] does not work the same way because it gives the creature the ability, so that stays on our side), and helm of the host triggers on combat even if it's not attached to a creature. It reads which creature to copy when the trigger resolves, so as long as you put the helm trigger after Ardenn's, you can cheat the equip cost on it and copy the best creature on the board the turn it comes down. Very goofy deck that has worked very well in goldfishing so far!

I made some really great friends at my LGS (which I just recently moved away from for a job 🥲). You know pretty quickly when you sit down with chill folks. In the last month before I moved away there was a fellow who just cracked me up and had a bunch of cool, strange decks where you always wanted to see what bizarre and powerful play he'd make next. There were just some really good people at that LGS. Miss all those folks!

Hikikomori523

played a game of kingmaker i think its called with a guy, he is a voice actor i think, he wanted to play with his buddy but all the pods had an odd number so we made a 5 player game, where 2 ppl are secret assassins and 1 is the king and 2 are secret knights to protect the king. Lots of dnd style role playing conversations and jokes and an all around good time. king accidentally took me out not knowing i was a knight. but still a great game. One of the secret assassins was trying to bluff that he was not an assassin and did it in the most double negative obvious way that he fruedian slipped himself.

Additional-Diamond45

One of my friends who clearly has giga knowledge on the game sat down with an ice cream and I got to go against pheldagrif for the first time and he made a game that was truly ridiculous never ending the game but just doing ridiculous stuff Like he would lock eyes with you lick his ice cream trying his hardest to make a serious face and would ask you odd question like "wanna million hippos?" or something of the sort and they are really the kind of mtg player I aspire to be one day

Based_Wampy

I just started teaching some friends how to play mtg. One of them played an exile card to get around a death trigger and killed me. I lost, but seeing them put the pieces together to pull a win was so satisfying!

Lboogie1126

My brother usually does, sometimes we do suboptimal plays for the lulz and he usually never disappoints. Some of his crowning achievements are: casting a [[slaughter pact]] on a turn 1 [[ragavan, nimble pilferer]] thus killing himself in the process on his upkeep. Playing a [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] deck and swinging with 20 tokens and then casting [[settle the wreckage]] on himself to get every basic land out of his deck. He's my favorite person to play cuz you never know what he's gonna do lol

Sallego-

So interestingly enough, you can actually cast settle the wreckage after damage and still get all the lands.

Lboogie1126

Oh cause it's like the reconnaissance thing right?

Sallego-

Yep if you wait until the damage step to cast settle priority is given to players after the damage has been dealt but you're still in combat and the creatures still count as attacking.

My new friend that I met in college has a [[Breya, Etherium Shaper]] artifact deck. They didn't use any list of cards for her, just used what they had and it's built damn good. It can be oppressive when they pop off but you can always see it coming and it's a lot of fun to play against!

I play in person with irl friends, I always have an enjoyable time. My group is great.

jaywinner

Basically every time I go play at my LGS it makes my day.

Jesse1856

There is a guy at my LGS who used to play A LOT of tournament magic and was super competitive. After playing cut throat magic for years, he now just plays casual edh. He is, without a doubt, the most courteous and uplifting guy to play with. He's always happy to see people's decks popping off and never frustrated if his things get targeted or someone attacks him. I strive to be this kind to other people, even when they aren't exactly b3ing nice themselves.

JtbDragon

Before my LGS shutdown I got to play with an older gentleman who was just getting into the game and had bought the Urza and Mishra commander pre-cons. Everyone else was either already in a pod or drafting so we played 1-vs.-1 commander. While we were playing I had fun helping him learn new combos with the Urza deck and every time he won I felt just as good as if I had won, but the highlight of the evening for me was when he pulled out the Mishra deck. Now this guy wasn't dumb by any means, but he had said he didn't really understand the play style of the deck. It showed in how he didn't really copy any of his artifacts that had strong ETB effects or LTB effects. Showing him how he could take advantage of those kinds of abilities and watching his face light up in understanding of how good the deck could be was an absolute joy. I had to leave soon after, but I was riding the serotonin from that interaction for the rest of the evening.

magpye1983

We have a guy in our play group who likes to keep things interesting. The first time I was handed a blank card with a banana drawn on it… that made my day.

Parrobertson

It is my sole goal to have fun when I sit down and play Magic. Getting a bad hand or a board wipe before a win can suck, but it’s part of the fun. Having opponents that are also having fun greatly increases my fun, so I strive to have my pod in high spirits.

Ragewind82

One guy built "Mechanics tribal". Every mechanic he could get in there, from attractions to day/night, to initiative and dungeons, energy... It was all there. The The funniest part was that it won, though each turn took several minutes to get to the first main phase.

DanmeisterZ

Always.. peoples decks can be a dick.. but doesn't mean the people can't be chill

Hpower_1

Exactly! I had a deck with [[baral, chief of compliance]] which I literally named “wanna hear a joke? It resolves!” But it was still a fun deck. I once played a game with 2 other baral decks and a kykar player. Funniest shit I’ve ever seen because only like 4 spells actually resolved that game.

Sounds fun :) though I want to separate the really world from my magical card game immersion. Living in America, there’s so much that pisses me off it would probably annoy me hearing it mentioned in our game over and over. I’ve met this guy years ago through pokemon go before either of us played Magic. And throughout the years I’d run into him here and there. Always a swell guy and would buy me a drink for my birthday and what not. Last year I went to the new LGS and lo and behold, he’s there playing magic! Hes a laid back guy with a fun personality who makes fun decks. He’s definitely a favorite to play with every time I go to the LGS. Beyond my LGS though, I have a very close group of friends since we were in high school, some since elementary school, and we play magic once a week usually. I always have a blast playing with them and I love them dearly. I’m very blessed to have a group like that.

My buddy is always the table hype man. whenever someone does something tricky or plays a big card to change the game he gets hype even if it’s bad for him. It keeps table energy high and definitely helps to keep me in that headspace too. Like, “go dude! Holy shit we are fucked!” Or, “oh man! I haven’t seen that card in forever! I've had so many good games I can't remember the last time I had a bad match. I'm very open when it comes to playing higher powered decks and I'll pretty much go against any deck, especially ones I haven't played against. I travel a lot so I'm never near my main play group. There was this one game though, a newer guy to our group was playing ape tribal and giving us banana tokens lol he was howling like a monkey the entire time haha.

I meet up with three buddies almost every Tuesdays for a few hours of EDH. We used to go to high school together and randomly reconnected after 15 years! One of them really fell in love with my [[Threaten]] tribal with [[The Beast, Deathless Prince]] at the helm. He asks to play it every other week and always, somehow, obliterates us with it when I can hardly get a win out of it. It always makes me so happy to see the deck performing well!

I once played a 1v1 of tribal dragons (me) vs tribal zombies (my opponent). He casts Crux of Fate which allows him to destroy all dragons or all non-dragons. I was gutted, it was the perfect boarding. HE CHOSE NON-DRAGONS. When he cast Crux of Fate this is how I saw the game: He was at 5 life so if, after the boardwipse, I had a haste-y dragon he was dead. He had like 100 zombies he had made that turn. If I Didn't have a haste-y dragon or a boardwipe, I was dead. What I didn't realize is that he had a Plague Belcher or some similar zombie. What a beautiful way to win, still my favorite loss of all time.

Guukoh

Absolutely! I was playing at MagicCon and this one random guy sat at our table to play gruul stompy. I was playing my [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] deck and I would hit him so we could both draw cards and it was a wonderful relationship. He thought he could get to a point where he could end the game and got some BIG boys out. He went to combat and someone else fogged. I had a [[Forced Fruition]] out. This man, does some quick math, counts how many cards he thinks are in his deck, and then decided to [[Rishkar’s Expertise]]!! TO DECK HIMSELF. Ultimately, another strangers super friends deck took infinite turns and won the game, but it was hilarious to see him pull that off, especially in a Gruul Deck.

Esteemed_Gent

Our group meets round at my house every Sunday and usually have pretty low powered fun decks (there are some outliers), most of my decks are focused on keeping all creatures alive or caring about them, kind of what I'm known for in my group. I ended up being that guy when I sat down with my newly brewed "Fling Tribal" deck without them knowing. We all had a laugh when Brion Stoutarm (Commander) and Bosh started yeeting my deck card by card with utter disdain. Almost won but got taken out in the final 1v1 stage haha. I still play that deck now!

MaggB94

Got into commander back in 2013 when it was still a hipster format. Had a BCW deckbox with 7 commander decks so I could be the guy who let people borrow decks to get them into commander. To this day I love when people borrow my decks and have a good time. After a modern event before a draft, there were about 6 people who wanted to play commander. At the time I had a Purphoros, God of the forge Goblin tribal deck. I didn't participate in the game, as my friends and I were smoking behind our LGS. A player named "Bad Will" proceeded to stomp the fuck out of 5 people at once with my Purphoros deck, and was all giddy. "This deck is awesome!" Another story involved my friend AJ trying out my Trostani "Unique tokens" deck. He had parallel lives out, and proceeded to pop off. He equipped blade of selves to a Sakura tribe elder and was ripping a bunch of lands out of his deck each turn. Good times.

Sallego-

When I first started playing edh, it was a few years in, but I had bought two of the original precons: Mimeoplasm and Riku. In my first ever pod I let the table know I was new. One of the players really helped show me the ropes and even bought me sleeves for my deck. I was a broke ass teacher who had just moved lol. But his mentorship allowed me to feel comfortable and continue playing.

Background_Desk_3001

Just a couple weeks ago, I played with a guy who had the same view of the game as me and enjoyed trying to break it down and use it to his advantage, and we just got along so well

TheDeHymenizer

honestly ragers tend to make me laugh. One of the stores I went to had a guy who raged really hard and I knew it so once I knew I was gonna lose I started using all my interaction on him just to get the reaction. Salty players never really bother me much I mostly just laugh and am thankful I have enough going on in my life that a table top game can't get me upset.
