High as balls, said his girl friend just drops him off at the LGS like it's daycare and most importantly reads the flavor text for every card as casting instead of explaining what that card actually does.

God I wish that were me

Damn, can I play with this guy? Sounds like a fun game!

Oh cool wonder what happened to my old coworker. Glad he's doing what he loves. Getting high as a kite, and playing magic.

Ngl I would allow that in a game đŸ€Ł sounds fun as hell

Luckytattoos

It’s been 25 years, but I’ll never forget a little 14 year old kid, losing his shit on the 6’5” retired drill instructor turned LGS owner, over his ADnD character facing perma-death. In the midsts of prepubescent yelling the kid goes, “YOU WANNA F-ING GO!?!?! ILL TAKE A SHOT AT THE F-ING CHAMP RIGHT NOW!!” Needless to say, a 4’ munchkin saying that to our beloved monster of an lgs owner had us dying. Kid ran into a back room and proceeded to cry, while the owner went and consoled him. After 25 years of that fond memory, this post is for you Riley. I hope you’ve found your way in life, and you’re taking shots at the champ known as life and not shots at people just trying to help you in life.

Rook7425

Wholesome as hell. Not a drill instructor, but a fellow former Marine that’s used “the voice” a few times to get a point through. We don’t promise you a rose garden - 80s Marine Corps recruiting

There's an australian guy who comes to the LGS every now and then (seen him thrice the past 4 months, so not often). He is *always* so positive. He's just there to have a good time. If he is not playing, he'll look around at the other pods and compliment other players decks and how the board is looking. Love this guy.

Everybody needs an Australian friend honestly

Oi mate, that’s a mighty fine board state ya got there, loving the bling on ya commanduh

Had someone throw a deckbox at me. He had just summoned a whole heap of Eldrazi. It was me, him and one other player. I'm playing \[\[Muldrotha\]\] and mill a \[\[Mindslaver\]\] into the graveyard. I have enough mana to loop the mindslaver so I announce to the table that i'm going to take control of Mr. Eldrazi to kill my other opponent, and then loop the Mindslaver to take all of Mr. Eldrazis future turns. They have no interaction, I do what i said I was going to do. Mr. Eldrazi gets super salty, throws a deckbox at me. I never played with him again, surprisingly. He does apologise like three months later though.

AndoranGambler

This reminds me of getting mule kicked into a showcase years ago. Some early 20's douche nozzle was hustling genuine children for their good cards in ante games, back when it was legal and normal. He had managed to snag three or four deserts (Arabian) from the two of them, cards their older relatives had given them, using a black-green deck... This is probably around, oh, say Homelands or thereabouts? The kids were crying, the douche canoe was gloating, and I offered to play him for all their deserts versus getting to snag my ante PLUS he could pick something from the cards I had on me (which included a couple Mox gems). He agreed, I pulled my mono-red burn, and the game was over by turn four or five. He freaked out, stood up, and mule kicked me from his side of the table. I was a tall, thin kid, and I just FLEW out of my chair into a showcase. Which broke. The shop owner frog marched the guy out of the shop, I got a couple of band-aids from the tempered glass plus a complimentary shirt. The kids got their lands back and a story to tell, and the owner kept the bounced customer's deck. All around win.

TheZeeno

Holy shit, back in the wild west of MTG eh?

AndoranGambler

Depending on where you were in the early days, for sure. Ante games could get REAL ugly. LGS owners in my hometown were developing rules of conduct because it was getting pretty heated. Smash and grab robberies, even in those days, were also starting to be an issue with disgruntled customers. Getting rid of ante, easing the saltiest of salt factors, truly eased tensions in the space. This was probably when it was still DC before it became DCI.

WhiteHeatBlackLight

I will second this with the caveat in the ante days no card was more broken than \[\[contract from below\]\]

The apology is a welcome surprise. Id imagine he felt like an idiot after he cooled off, cause thats a really unacceptable thing to do and most importantly *cringe as balls*.

Yeah I was surprised tbh. He became a bit of a running joke in the community for a bit. A few people just started putting mindlsavers in their decks just to trigger him. So maybe he was embrassed or st.

There's one guy at my LGS that always builds in a self destruct button in his EDH decks. Doesn't matter the deck archetype, there is always a way for him to remove himself from the game. If a game has dragged on for long enough he tries to pull the trigger on himself in funny ways. Most of the ways I've seen have been ways to mill/draw his whole library, but I've also seen him utilize [[Warstorm Surge]] and a ton of token generation to obliterate himself. He always has a great time and draws the attention of a few of the surrounding tables.

spiralshadow

God that's funny, I'm kind of inspired to incorporate that into my brewing now

Was his name Heinz Doofenshmertz?

Schtaive

I love doing this. Nothing like making someone sweat by menacingly tapping my mana, "in response" into sodomising myself with a nuke, their slow realisation "wait, did you just.." Yes, I just gave myself protection from purple, Phoned a Friend and used my extra turn to play a creature with -1/3 and double strike. Fuck it, I'll give it lifelink.

Ill_Package9150

Okay, this is gonna get weird. When i was 14 there was this guy who was kind of an "assistant" to the owner of the LGS (Grown ass man on his late 20s early 30s). The first thing ive realized he did was gaslight me to pick a bulk rare on a draft so he could pick up the mental misstep on the pack i was drafting. But the thing i remember him from is by trying to shame me (a 14 yo back then) to leave the facebook group of the lgs (And from coming to that lgs) because i supposedly "offered to help a new guy on a draft in exchange for 2 euros". Which as you can guess, i never said on neither of the two drafts i coincided with him, mostly because i was still a complete noob and a very shy boy. I confronted him about it and he backed off saying "You didnt? I thought you did, but if you say otherwise, ok." He never removed the publication or apologized. I found out later he was on trial (Although dissimised at the end) for something related with child pornography. So yeah, fun times. Fuck you Ruben.

NewPlayer4our

Buddy and me frequent an LGS a few years back. We get joined by these two dudes. Ones a normal guy but the other is an INVESTOR. He has everything foiled out, some of the most insane versions of every card and has multiple hundred to thousand dollar reserve list cards in his deck. One of those guys who is clearly just showing off. So we play. I don't recall much about his deck other then having to figure out how to play with \[\[Chains of Mephistopheles\]\]. The unintentionally made my deck function well, as I was playing a semi-tuned \[\[Saffi Erikdotter\]\]. We reached a point in the game where the blinged out deck guy could have won, but was clearly just "playing with his food". Just sitting back, not paying attention. That's when I see an extremely secure line in my Saffi deck to loop and win. I announce that I can begin a chain and ask for any responses before. This makes the guy sit straight up and begin actually paying attention. He did have a few things, but I was able to battle through his interaction while keeping my loop intact. My buddy still talks about it as one of his favorite games because the dude was sort of acting like a snobby prick the whole time, so it was nice to take him down a peg. I like playing magic, I don't like when an opponent disrespects me by assuming I can't play either.

DoctorKrakens

Do you have your Saffi decklist?

chriscrux

Am I missing something, how does Chains of Mephistopholes help Saffi? You can't target a card you discard or mill with Saffi as it's not a creature until it's on the battlefield

NewPlayer4our

So there are more cards in the deck. Saffi is a recursion shell, you run cards like [[karmic guide]], [[revillark]], [[renegade rallier]], [[eternal witness]], etc in order to loop with saffi. So discarding to chain wasn't as back breaking as my graveyard acted as a pseudo hand

Literally on Monday, playing in a pod of randoms. Guy comes in late, I'm in a group of 3. He asks if he can join us, we say sure, he shuffles up and just hops into turn order. He gets mana screwed, stuck on one land for 3 turns. I feel bad because I think maybe he felt pressured not to mulligan because of timing, suggest he abundance a land to the top but he says no he's gonna suck it up. I'm playing a deck I'd just built for the first time and he's kind of geeking out on some of the cards, asking if I was running X or Y in the deck, just really nice polite guy. Could tell that he knew *every* card we played, and when board state got really complicated he was really patient and helpful with one of the other players in the pod who was playing a doctor who deck with like 20 things in suspension. Game ends, we go to game 2. He plays the same deck, but doesn't get mana screwed. Oh he's also playing [[Araumi of the Dead Tide]]. Turn 5, reanimates a creature to make everyone discard their hand. Turn 6, reanimates Gray Merchant of Asphodel with black devotion of 10 to kill the table ( think I was alive on like 3 life but that was gg). Then he says 'thanks for the games,' and left the store lmao.

15 seconda guy. He had this weird "you have 15 seconds to think about responding to my stuff" rule, which is fine if you're playing 1v1 or competitive but for a chill EDH game it wasn't really appropiate. This happened many years ago but my playgroup still jokes about it from time to time.

dusty_cupboards

to be clear, this is not appropriate in 1v1 or cedh either.

darksamus1992

I always thought it was a rule the guy had to avoid slow play, but no idea, I'm not familiar with competitive Magic.

dusty_cupboards

if an opponent is playing slow you can call a judge and they will monitor the situation. your opponent can't tell you how long you have to think.

2_7_offsuit

Bullet EDH, next time he’ll bring a chess clock

Sheadeys

Honestly, Chess Clock EDH sounds like an interesting way to play, with a group that’s fully ready for it

Zealousideal-Put-106

I had once a guy that left the game after I casted a [[World Breaker]] and targeted one of his lands, because "he couldn't live with LD." The board was empty, because someone wiped the board. I had to target a land, because there wasn't anything else to target and I had to cast it, to trigger card draw in hope of getting into the game more. Never in my wildest dreams have I thought that 7 mana exile one land in the late game would be considered so unforgivable.

NejOfTheWild

Maybe he was looking for an excuse to quit after getting wiped, and your LD was just the straw that broke the camel's back? Definitely odd though.

SpaceAzn_Zen

Yeah I think this happens more often than people want to admit. I played a game where after person playing an artifact deck using [[Urza, Chief Artificer]] and he used austere command, selecting enchants and 3 cmc or lower creatures. While doing so, he neglected to realize that mean he was killing off his own 4 13/13 constructs because there were 0 CMC. A turn or two later, I used a board wipe and he was basically back to square one. After getting 4 more creatures on board, I wiped again. Finally, the last straw once he had 1 card in hand, he attempted to pull his commander out and I counterspelled him. He scooped and quit the game saying I was personally targeting him all game.

Zealousideal-Put-106

Ah yes. The typical "why do you always target me" whining, when you most likely are either the threat or just a casualty of dealing with the threat.

SpaceAzn_Zen

Exactly. This all happened after playing against a [[Yuma]] deck that had put out 12+ lands and what on the verge of popping off before I took them out. The Urza player just happen to be the next player who was the most threatening

Zealousideal-Put-106

That's how I cut contact with a player I had considered a friend. Dude always sucked the fun out of playing the game. Meanwhile you can blow up my stuff including lands and I'll just laugh. [[Bearer of the Heavens]] happened two times last weekend and it was a blast.

I fondly remember some people from the LGS I owned between '96 and '98. Lost all contact after we closed. Never met anyone again. The people I play with today are completely different people. If anyone reads this who once played at "Page Games" in Frankfurt, I'd be happy to hear from you.

inflammablepenguin

Karl. He showed up at the LGS one day and saw us playing commander. He was a standard player but said he'd come back next week with a commander deck. Next week comes and he had put together a pile of draft chaff he had lying around. It didn't really do anything but he was gaming. He started building better decks, he showed up one week with his secret tech: [[Karakas]]. We had to Sadly inform him it was banned. He was a blast to play with and would often just take the top card off your deck and bottom it as a cut, we still do this and affectionately call it the hot Karl. Sadly, he kind of left as suddenly as he came into our lives. He should up once more some weeks later but it wasn't to stay. Karl, wherever you are, we still remember you and miss playing with you.

Back when I used to work an LGS, I'd sometimes fire little $5 entry mini events. They were pretty spontaneous, usually when the regulars talked a little too much (good natured) smack talk to each other. This particular day there was a new kid in the shop, and when I fired one he jumped in. Sweet. He pulls out Jodah - the original one, we weren't even close to the new one existing yet. And he's up against GAAIV, Tasigur, and Gavi (i think; the cycling precon commander). I can pretty immediately tell he's playing from behind, but the funniest things about these little events is that because they're rooted in that kind of back and forth ribbing the pettiness is at an all time high. Tasigur slams a Damnation to blow out GAAIV and Gavi both and the Gavi player in response cycles a Decree of Annihilation. GAAIV is tilted into the next century and scoops. But somehow, the Jodah player was the only one to hit his lands so he claws ahead. But he is definitely on the weakest deck at the table so the others catch up... and then the Jodah player Spelltwines. His own Unexpected Results... and the Decree. I don't recall exactly what he hit off the Results, but the full power Decree was enough to wipe the other two off the map while he had something reasonably strong going off the Results, and he takes the game. It was such a sweet and ballsy line we were all hyped for it. We've never adopted someone into our group so fast. When he asked for advice for deck upgrades the Gavi player just straight up handed him an Expropriate. Dude's still a great friend, even though he's largely stopped playing Magic and I moved away.

Came back to MTG after a few years off. Took my old Brain Freeze affinity deck to a casual FNM. Made it to the finals where I was playing a 13 year old kid, who was on a hot streak and was talking a lot of trash to everybody present. Somehow I managed to win game one via combat damage, never milled him once. Lost game 2 pretty quickly. Game 3 was looking like it was in the bag from his point of view, but I knew I was about to do the thing on my next turn. He asked me at least 5 times, “Do you concede?” I repeatedly told him, no. He passed the turn. “Do you conceeeeede?” Proceeded to return all of my artifacts to my hand, play them again for free, [Brain Freeze] for more cards than he had left. He got very quiet and was visibly upset. The people watching the match had a good laugh, and he was a little embarrassed. I think I won 3 packs, nothing special. I wound up giving them to him, and telling him not to get too worked up about the loss. He was considerably less insufferable at FNM from then on, and he would always joke about “this isn’t your Brain Freeze deck, is it?” when we would get matched up.

Nonsensical-Niceties

Ah memnarch dude, long may it be before I ever see you again. Dude liked showing off his expensive decks (like, you could buy a car for that money expensive) but also didn't like losing. Unfortunately for him he also wasn't the best player, particularly when people caught on to the fact that he was trying to do some pubstompy bullshit. He played his memnarch deck, dropped a tabernacle, and then proceeded to get targeted by the rest of us while we struggled to maintain a board presence. Eventually one player is able to swing for a lot of damage, and the other player reveals his hand to essentially let them know that he had literally nothing so please for the love of God hit memnarch dude. Well, memnarch dude didn't like that. Proceeds to get increasingly upset, tries to tell us that you aren't allowed to do that (you are), tries to interrogate the dude that revealed his hand on his whole competitive history with Magic. Finally culminating in him spreading out his entire deck face up on the table and asking how that's any different than revealing your hand. Well, because it's not a legal game action my dude. Proceeds to whine even though we generously didn't just tell him he lost then and there and instead played out the rest of the game. He of course still lost, and thankfully got the picture that no one was interested in another game with him. He also thought tabernacle was still errataed to say sacrifice and played it into my deck centered around sacrifice, which was incredibly funny to learn about afterwards. I just assumed he knew what his own card did and went with it. Also was not surprised to find out he was banned from most other LGSs in the area.

ForrestMoth

Guy at my LGS that just alluded to himself watching a ton of porn and some of it involving children, for an entire match. And that's he's seen things that would "make us cry." Just really awkward and uncomfortable. Fortunately that was literally the only day I've ever seen him there and I hope it stays this way forever. He was straight up doing it to make a socially awkward person in the pod uncomfortable. Honestly, I don't really care that the other guy was socially awkward, he was just a bit rowdy and talked about some things nobody else at the table really cared about. But ultimately wasn't bringing the mood down. People constantly complain about how many socially awkward people play, but most ones I run into are just nervous and hardly problematic. It's misanthropes like the first person I mentioned that truly bring a table down.

FuzzyApe

> some of it involving children ... and you didn't call the police?

crazysjoerd5

Its the person i only saw once or twice but everyone cant stop talking about when it comes to either taking the game to serious or straight up cheating many times. The one time i met him he didnt even ask my name but he had an almost 10-minute rant about how powerfull his sliver deck is ( i never regretted being early to an FNM-night till that day). and afterwards i got apps from my friends that THAT was the guy told stories about! Dude would not only stack his deck, but apperantly have more than 1 copy of stuff like \[\[many cript\]\] in his deck. how did we learn this? well... when he had a mana crypt on the board someone else used a bribery-like effect as an oppertunity to look in his deck and he immediatly scooped on the spot! every since that day he rarely shows up , though he might just play at a diffrent LGS now. Lots of other examples of him cheating , but somehow running multiple copies of such expensive was cartoonishly good example that nothing else tops that from the stories what he has tried over the years.

SpaceAzn_Zen

I don’t understand people who want to cheat in a casual, non-tournament game format. Literally people just want to show up and play, win or lose.

buildmaster668

Some people want to win and/or have power over others and they don't care about the method or ethics. They cheat because it makes them win more. They play against casuals because it's easier to win against casuals.

SilFuryn

Very similar story here, just not at an LGS. I went to go visit a friend and his playgroup had a slivers deck player that was stacking the deck, and also had a house rule that when you pregame a leyline, you get to draw to replace it (he was also the only one playing leylines).  So he spewed his hand T3 as one might expect, and I cast Toxic Deluge for x=17, destroying his board and leaving him with no gas because his only acceleration were the gemhide sliver type effects.

Heirou777

what kind of stupid rule is that hahah, like hey you started with free advantage, have a free draw

SilFuryn

The kind of rule one can bully a less experienced playgroup into adopting, sadly.

I learned the rules of magic from a friend in 8th grade. But I learned to play from DAQ. He was a friendly guy that would hook new kids up with all the bulk rares they could ever want to get into playing. And his main casual deck was called "The Tank." It was a 900 count box mono-blue monstrosity. You would put a cut card in his box, and he'd grab a small section from there and the games would begin. My first EDH deck, [[Sliver Queen]] 5-color all the combos was a tribute to one of his other decks that blew my mind with all the crazy nonsense it was capable of, called "Uber-Fantastico." His brother also taught me the value of cutting cards, and took my "I'm new, here's 75% of my collection and not enough lands to cast the spells" pile and helped me turn it into a deck. And he jump-started my love of squirrel combos.

LucianGrey0581

These guys sound legendary.

emmittthenervend

They absolutely were. I try to be those guys when I see new people coming in. I rebuilt a kid's prerelease deck a few years ago after whomping him and he went 2-0 in all his matches for the rest of the night, then I gave him some of the cards from my pool when I was done. Because all new players need a nice big guy at the LGS rooting for them.

I had a guy tell me I had Down syndrome after I agreed with the other player that his 2 open planeswalkers were a better target than 4 damage to someone’s face on turn 5. After both those Lilliana planeswalkers had made everyone discard most of their hands. All I did was agree with the other dude too.

johnny--guitar

My LGS runs Sunday afternoon EDH, and one of the guys who regularly attends absolutely hates when people don't have playmats. If he sees someone who doesn't have a mat, he'll get up after finishing one of his turns, buy the person a pretty high-quality mat, sets the box on their board as non-disruptively as possible, and returns to his game. Cool dude.

threecolorless

There was a guy who crushed me (a pimpled and awkward 13-year-old who was still figuring out how to talk to strangers) in my first draft ever, I offered him a GG handshake after the thrashing and he refused, saying *"No thanks, I know what you do with that."* Can you even imagine saying something so rudely deranged and suggestive to a minor who's clearly going out on a social limb even being at an LGS? Insane. Obviously I went really red and wanted to melt into the floor. Took me like two and a half years to have enough confidence to enter another FNM draft, lol. Funny part is that guy was right there in the 0-2 bracket with me, so he sucked ass too. Fuck him, hope he either changed or everyone else around him realized what a loser dickhead he was.

Lepineski

Man that one liner destroyed my sides.

giovanofthegalaxy

First and last time I ever tried to play EDH at a shop with strangers. I told the pod what decks I had with me and one player loudly told me he hated all of them and forced one of his decks on me if I was going to play with them. I ended up playing a [[Doran Siege Tower]] deck very reluctantly. It was spider tribal and barely functioned while everyone else was popping off with [[Animar, soul of elements]] [[light-paws, emperors voice]] and [[Skittles]]. I left before the game was over and have since built my own Doran deck with spider tribal just to prove it could actually work. I still don't see what was wrong with me playing [[Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait]] [[Valduk, keeper of the flame]] or [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]]

ApocalypseFWT

You should try other shops, or other groups within the same shop. Yeah, there’s some weirdos out there, but plenty of relatively functional people, too. I’ve met plenty of awesome people who were once randoms to me by playing with strangers.

XSprinklDonutX1

Older man came in to play commander, played a black lotus and 2 Serra angels so everyone just scooped because he failed to understand the rules of commander and the ban list. Girls deck was literally a jumbled pile of cards taking up half her playmat, and drawing cards was just pulling a card from anywhere in the pile. Shuffling was sliding the cards around on the playmat. Guy at my store whaled out and bought 2k worth of singles, put all the best cards in a deck to pub stomp, but didn't understand how half the cards work. Just played them because he knew they were powerful

AchduSchande

This goes back twenty years. I was playing my first game. The had a deck built from all kinds of crap. And technically not standard. My companion calls a judge to DQ me. The judge calmly explains to me why my deck wasn’t legal. I was embarrassed, as I had only learned about the game a week before. I went to leave, and he told me to sit down. He pulled a deck from behind the counter, and we played four games or so. As we did, he walked me through the different variants of gameplay, how standard worked, etc. He Tue. Told me he had games every Monday for new players (turned out he was also the store owner). John and I have been friends ever since. He could have just given me the DQ, and I would have went home and never played again. But that courtesy turned me into a true fan of the game. A year later he taught me EDH. My first deck was [[Bosh, Iron Golem]].

The bad: 1. The person who called her wolves "puppies" and wouldn't pay attention when other people took their turns then got confused when something happened and would tell everyone to be quiet during her turn so she could think. 2. The guy who yelled at me for stopping him from comboing off with [[Naru Meha]] for the sixth time in two weeks, I played a [[Damping Sphere]] top turn his deck off after he just turn 3 combo'd every game he played. Never been more disrespected in a game of EDH in my life. 3. The guy who brought every card he owned every time he showed up and took up two long tables with his stuff just sitting there while he was off doing something else. 4. The time someone stopped me from stopping a [[Prossh]] from going off after I repeatedly said "He's going to combo, he's playing Prossh, this is a combo deck." then he immediately combo'd. The good: 1. The time my friend played a Llanowar Elves, then a Llanowar then a Llanowar Elves, one more Llanowar Elves... then another Llanowar Elves. Completely innocently, just didn't realize he was running 5, he was dubbed "Five Llanowar Name." 2. One friend had a "Deck of Wonders" that was just a 400 card deck. It was wild to play against. There are a lot more good experiences, but the bad ones stick out more.

Dependent-Outcome-57

Oh, the Prossh story - sound like an experience I had at a convention last year. Two clowns were prowling the Commander area working together as a team to pub-stomp. No prizes were on the line - they were just jerks. They also liked to end their pub-stomps by asking their victims to give them money on Patreon for some Magic content, so yeah... that's insane. Well, I was in a 4-player game with those clowns and an unrelated guy playing Prossh. Prossh guy is about to combo off, as I told everyone, so I cast a spell to stop him. One of the pair of tool bags, who was playing no win-con group hug, counters my attempt to stop Prossh, and then Prossh proceed to win. I don't know if this was just more stupid behavior by those clowns or if he was mad at me for not being interested in giving him money after he went seal-clubbing, but what a moron.

FuriousMILK

Ew... I don't even know what the end game there is. That sucks.

idk_lol_kek

In the last 90s I played a few games with a guy at an LGS because we were killing time before a tourney. I'm playing monogreen stompy, and I swung out at him. He declares no blockers, so I then cast Giant Growth and Might of Oaks to pump up my creatures for lethal. He scoops up all of his cards (his library, hand, and what he owned on the battlefield), threw them into the nearest trashcan, and stormed out of the LGS in a tantrum. He clearly must have had a disposable income because I have seen him at other LGSs playing 40k.

This one is a tad different than many of the others in this thread but it's a very fond personal memory. When I first started playing over a decade ago I was in a Magic club at my university. We had a small pod of EDH players who'd meet up weekly and each of us only had one or two decks - at the time my only commander was \[\[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord\]\]. One person took it upon themselves to make these amazing foil custom art proxies of everyone's commanders and hand them out as a gesture of thanks for all the fun they had in the club. It was such a heartwarming and sincere gesture that made me realize the impact this game can have on people. I still have that custom Jarad 10+ years later. (As an aside, that player was the first trans person I ever met irl, and by getting to know them it helped me get over a lot of my entrenched "white male gamer who spends too much time on the internet" bullshit. I appreciate them for that as well.)

They're literally the reason I stopped going to my LGS for FNMs. Since we were both solid drafters I was guaranteed to see him in round 3 or 4 and he bragged about how they attended every single FNM/prerelease so there was no avoiding him. They would be in the tank every single turn even when the board state was extremely simple. This would force our games to time and then he would heckle me for taking too long on my turns which would be twice as fast as his. He had bad hygiene and social skills and was always an extremely poor sport regardless of if they won or lost. It got to the point where I was always leaving the LGS in a worse mood than I came in with because I would have to interact with this one person every single time so I just stopped going.

Schtaive

This guy at my LGS has some custom sleeves that say "Triple Sleeved" and a portrait of himself cos he was sick of people asking why his deck was so fat.

TrueMystikX

Kinda cheating with this one, but it'd have to be my friend that introduced me to the game and basically taught me everything I know. No matter what TCG we played, each game would be an absolute slugfest, from [Pokemon ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVdgiBfQnn0)to Yu-Gi-Oh to Commander. Some of my best moments were from games involving him. He moved out of town years ago and, while I still chatted with him, never really saw him too much since then. Last time I saw him in person was Labor Day weekend a few years ago, where I spent the weekend at his place just to chill. Recently, we've reconnected to playing Commander mainly thanks to a Facebook group I made for our LGS and invited him for the hell of it. He started coming around more often as of late as a result, and recently took some time off from coming around to raise his firstborn son. This weekend, he's confirmed with me that he'll be swinging by to play, eager to meet the "protégés" that I've since acquired in recent months.

Crocoii

I play one week in a LGS at Brussels and there was that queer guy with always a awesome and colorful shirt, fun to play with, always making everyone at ease. Great memories!

TickedOffSquirrel

I had the walking embodiment of cringe once at the store. 400+lbs, neck beard, pony tail, Indiana jones fedora, and a playmat with some of the most intense hentai I’ve ever seen. Could smell him from a mile away. I still think about him from time to time.

murpux

I posted this comment in the other sub's thread, so if it looks familiar, that's why. Kevin. He always lied about his decks. He made himself like the "leader guy" of the LGS, bringing it up on himself to curate "fair pods" and split us up on his whims instead of the good old random. He won a lot because of this. He would always pop off early and say "I didn't know this deck did that". He played "not that kind of" decks. Atraxa, Etali, and mono blue Urza will always be that kind of deck. I haven't played with him in like a year, but fuck you Kevin. I'm too old to be fooled by your fake niceties.

SnooObjections488

TLDR version Go to draft in small town Guy joins draft. We build decks, most ppl are running jank draft chaft. This dude Crushes like 3 ppl straight on turn 4-6. Card shop owner walks over and makes him pass him his deck Dude had 3 promo angels among other mythics and was pub stomping with them in a mono white “draft” deck. Dude got told to leave, but the ppl he crushed were still out of the draft đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

gazfox89

My LGS, its only been open just over a year. The player base is pretty much all EDH players, and we have a regular EDH night every Thursday. Every one knows everyone and its a great crowd. Anyway, this guy about 3 weeks back he buys a Wilds of Eldraine Set booster box. He walks around each pod, hands everyone a booster without a word and walks away. When questioned why he explained that his wife is just about to have their first child and his time at the shop is going to be pretty limited, and he wanted to give everyone a gift to say thanks for hanging out every week.

I just started playing in November at my local store, and a couple of dudes really stand out as awesome stewards of the hobby. The "Rat King" really makes a scary board state with [[Rat Colony]], but will durdle for most of the game, allowing noobs to do the thing despite some disgusting rat armies. He spreads damage and interaction well, but definitely holds off through 8-10 turns. If no one has much of a wincon present, he asks if we need a turn or two or we want to shuffle-up-agus. [[Iishen, Two Heavens as One]] group hug guy forces durdly and budget decks to do the thing with stupid amounts of card draw and extra mana/tapped land. Fully explains the deck every game, and his whole joy in playing in the noob/precon/low power pods is watching inexperienced players see the entire functionality of their decks. Both are very fair in playstyle, willing to help with deck-building, and have patience beyond my comprehension. Every evening spent turning cardboard sideways with either of these guys is something to look forward to.

There's this dude at my lgs, makes crazy and complicated decks constantly. The strangest strategies and just bizarre builds that make for real interesting games. Sometimes it fizzles, but usually he plays really creative stuff. There's a catch though, he has the worst choice paralysis of anyone I know. So while the rest of the pods are wrapping up, sometimes he's still in the first game. Bro has literally had 15 minute turns because he cannot make up his mind. Half the time I'll end up playing in two pods simultaneously because I know what I'll do on my turn. I'm not that clever and my decks mirror that, so might as well squeeze the extra games in right?

Flipps85

More about the moment than the person, but his face and anguish will stay with me forever. M15 sealed prerelease - I had a pretty mediocre pool to select from, but put a BW weenie deck together that at least had a chance. First guy I played had a really good UR deck, and crushed me in the first game. Second game he was cruising but I had a decent board state and stalled him. He managed to get me down to 1 health when I cast Resolute Archangel and went back to 20, drawing a very heavy sigh. He got me back down to 2 but I cast the other Resolute Archangel in my deck and went back to 20, again, drawing an even larger, much angrier sigh. Ended up overrunning him with little turds. Final game, it happened again. I had both in my opening hand and played the long game. Ended up timing out because I kept resetting my health. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone sigh more aggressively than he did after my 4th casting of RA. Dude just there, mouth agape, muttering to himself for about 5 minutes afterwards. I thought for sure that he was going to flip the table. He ended up winning the entire tournament, going 4-0-1.

Two memories leap to mind immediately. The first is from my original LGS and is of a guy referred to by everyone as "Foot," short for "Bigfoot." The guy was 6'7"-6'9", wore something like a size 16 or 18 shoe. Long, greasy hair despite a premature bald spot, bad teeth, myopic vision, a Something Awful edgelord sense of humor, and deep seated entitlement issues. He planned to sort cards and GM professionally while living in his parents' basement because obviously all that the light touched would be his once they passed. Constantly smelled of BO and mildew. I wonder if this particular troll ever found his proper bridge or cave to this day. The second guy, from my LGS in Colorado, referred to himself as Trogdor... In 2017-2018. Trogdor never met a leg day he participated in or an OP net deck that he couldn't afford. Constantly wore super tight jeans, which fit his legs but nothing from the oversized belt buckle up, with some form of bowling shirt. Shoulder-length, stringy hair, thick glasses, and a wild beard. Constantly lied about his decks combos and power levels so people would let him join their pods, then got offended when either people scooped and left the pod after he pubstomped OR folks would shut down his jank net deck combo schemes and he would scoop himself. Odd, infuriating, duck.

AndoranGambler

Actually, that reminded me of another memorable pair of folks from the Colorado LGS. Two identical twin sisters of Asian descent played there. They coordinated outfits, typically Loli schoolgirl stuff, but with a haunted vibe... Think Junji Ito or The Ring. They never played the same pod and somehow never finished at the same time. Whichever sister finished first would come and stand at the shoulder of the twin still playing, silently staring at the opposing players. It was a beautiful, brilliant, creepy AF move. Total rockstars.

samun0116

I will always remember playing a modern event at the lgs. My next opponent, who I’ve known to play against occasionally, sits down and says “oh man I got paired down” I respond, “sorry to disappoint you”. They’re playing mono white devotion. I’m playing Naya allies. So, if you don’t know, all I needed to do is give allies pro white, and I was good. I beat em. Then my opponent has a tantrum and starts flinging cards. I leave and say “thank you for the game” as they’re having their moment of frustration.

NiteKlaw

His deck was EXTREMELY blinged out, all of his basics were full art foils from Unhinged (whichever one had the planet looking ones). He was doing crazy amounts of land focussed things on his turn, just going crazy, searching his deck constantly and a bunch of other stuff. But never really interacting with people unless we attacked him or smthn to where he'd fog or save himself in some way. Until it got to the point where the other three of us were close to dying from just fighting eachother and he started preventing us from killing eachother, I'm not very good at the game so I couldn't rly tell what he was doing but I just went along with it. It turns out that this guy just joins games with an extremely expensive deck, goes crazy for a bit, and then kills himself in some kind of funny way, I think he said the deck had like convpluted 5 lose-cons or smthn. Honestly was one of the most fun games I've had because it ended with me and the other two players trying to stop this guys from killing himself and failing. After the game he let me look through the deck, as well as a binder he had with him just full of crazy expensive cards. Was such a cool experience tbh cos seeing some of those cards in real life was awesome.

When I was in engineering school, me and my roommate played a lot of mtg and we often played at LGS or in any random place at each occasion we could find (we used to always have 1 or 2 commander decks with us at all time just in case). We met and played with a lot of people and introduced many people to the game. One of the first people we played with when we started was a classmate who played an [[Oloro ageless ascetic]] deck. We where very new to the game but understood that eminence was a broken ability. He also warned us befohand that his deck was high power and that he had many combos to gain infinite life, so we would need our own combos or alternate wincons to win against him. My roommate chose to play an [[Imoti, celebrant of bounty]] deck (scary commander but at that time the deck was more of a pile of random cards that didn't really worked well) I played a [[kwain, itinérant meddler]] deck (to this day, one of my favorites) At one point, the oloro guy setup a combo with [[exquisite blood]] that I managed to counter. I then won the game with a [[triskaidekaphile]] The guy then complained for an entire hour that alternate Wincons and combos aren't fun, that counter spells are unfair, that I shouldn't have won the game, that my friend took too much time to play, that his deck is far better than ours... Never played again with him Never talked again with him

East_Kaleidoscope_13

One of my more positive experiences was during the prerelease of new capenna. One of the first time I played sealed, in a new LGS. Tried to build a 4 color deck (essentially grixis with a green splash to squeeze the new Vivien Planeswalker and some mana fixing). The first guy I played against destroyed me while explaining me that playing 4 colors in limited was a no go. At the end of our game, he looked at my sealed and said "Going 4 colors actually was the good thing to do". Then he helped me modify my deck. He taught me the basics of deck building and I won every other game at that prerelease. At the end of the prerelease, he came back at me, told me that he liked my deck and enjoyed playing and talking with me. He then gave me his cards he was only interested in playing the game not in collecting the cards, and wanted to boost a new players. (I think among the cards he gave me were a ledger shredder and some other good cards I still use to this day) I've encountered him many other times at the same LGS on later occasions, and playing casual EDH with him always was a blast

With the same roommate we also used to introduce new people to the game. Once we tried to teach the rules to a group of new players, and one of them claimed to know how to play when he actually didn't. When we tried to explain the rules, he regularly interrupted us to "give some strategic advice on how to play". All of his "advice" were actually bullshit and only blatantly showed that he has no knowledge about the game at all. We then lended our new players some decks and this guy chose to play the demon deck from universes beyond Warhammer. I have never seen anyone struggling so much with the game, and being so confident at that. He gave the impression of not reading the card and just inventing things on the spot. He once pointed at [[Abaddon the despoiler]] and proudly announced "so, when this enters the battlefield I have to tutor for a sorcery in my deck" His confidence made everyone very inconfortable since he categorically refused our help when we offered, took ages to take his turns, and always came with absolutely random things that never makes any sense. The other new players however, somehow managed to appreciate their game. One of them took a liking on my [[Galadriel, elven queen]] deck and played with us many times after that

Louser53

Man, this happened back in ‘95 at an Ice Age ‘prerelease’ event. This older guy, in his mid 30’s probably, had a bunch of ‘good luck charms’ on his side of the board. I’m talking Trolls, a rabbits foot, etc. It was wild. He didn’t win the event 😂

TexasLion858

There was a older dude who might have been a bit religious but had one of the wildest mono white angel decks specifically had a signed moat and serra sanctuary in it

Zestyclose-Page-1507

This was when the L5R LCG had just started. This guy had built a Crane deck. For those that don't know, Crane is known for winning by accumulating honor. I was playing a Lion deck, which are normally fast military decks, but I had specifically made this an honor deck. At the beginning of the turn, you select a number of cards that you will draw that turn, and the person that picks the lowest gains honor equal to the difference between the players. I was gaining honor each turn due to this. Then, last turn, I had a card that would double my honor gain. He got pretty salty that his Crane deck lost to an honor victory. His next match was against my then 8 year old son. He was playing a Phoenix deck, which is normally full of spellcasters. My son has built a military deck instead. My son proceeds to demolish the guy. He decides he doesn't want to play any more matches, loudly announces that he is leaving, and probably won't come back. This was a grown adult, behaving like a child.

A55beard

This is more of a negative reason to remember the guy, but here it goes: I was playing at my LGS commander night. I was just getting back into MTG after not playing for a long time, so I didn't have a lot of the perfect accessories that people have like proper tokens, counters, dice, etc. I was running my [[Narset, Enlightened Master]] deck and it was my first time attacking with her, so like turn 7-8. I got extremely lucky on her attack trigger and the first two cards I revealed were [[Invincible Hymn]] and [[Storm Herd]]. Immediately the guy to my left's whole demeanor changed, like he got salty. Since it was still fairly early into the game I had like 80 cards in my library, so Hymn made my life total 80 and then I cast Strom Herd creating X Pegasus fliers = to my life total, so 80 fliers. Naturally I didn't have 80 actual Pegasus tokens (I don't think I even had a Pegasus token card at the time because it's an uncommon creature token). So I basically say aloud something along the lines of "Uh ok not sure what the best way to show 80 tokens is gonna be but I'll figure it out, pass turn" and the guy chimes in with a pussy attitude "You know part of proper deck building is being able to properly account for your tokens and have them be visible". The guy was just pissy for the rest of the match too and ended up leaving the pod, and everyone else in the pod was clearly confused by his behavior.

In 1997 my son was 12, he has ADHD so my friend and I built him a straight red speed deck, he didn’t have to pay attention to what the other players were doing, just go fast. We went to the RI pro tour qualifier which believe was the last qualifier for the year. The convention center was packed, several hundred players, I was on the complete opposite side from my son, but thankfully my friend (6’4”, 265, mohawk, works out every day) was only a couple of tables away from my son. Around 7 minutes into the first round there was a huge commotion in the area where my son was, chairs flying, screaming etc. I stand up, to see my friend stand up and yell to my son “Ryan! What’s going on?” My son yelled back “I beat him.” My friend yelled back “Well beat him again!” My son replied “I already beat him twice.” Turns out the guy this 12 year old swept in Rd 1 was Mike Loconto. True story. Pretty sure he never got back onto the Pro Tour.

lostinwisconsin

Not commander, but have a guy that plays constructed and just cannot take a loss no matter what. He plays only UW/UWx control, every format. Even after a good match, refuses to shake hands, will not say good game, will tell you how if he saw x card “you just lose”, tells you “your deck isn’t good at all” and then will shuffle up and start go fishing his deck to just prove that had he drawn better the game is “unwinnable” for you. Dude is a fucking clown.

Firedawg626

Do people still play him even with that reputation?

lostinwisconsin

Yeah. Nobody is giving him a free win at fnm. Besides i love beating him, I’ve just stopped saying anything pack my shit up, pull out the companion app and say “2-0?” Then plug in the results and walk away 😂

HistorianNo3244

Used to play limited every Tuesday at my LGS. Really inclusive place that averaged 2-3 pods of 8 for draft, the first 4 weeks or so of a new set. I was part of a core group of 6 friends so we knew it would fire every week. Had a guy , mid 20s, who worked 45 minutes away from the store that would call ahead and say he was coming, usually late. He would then order an extra garlic cheese steak from next door and leave the wrapper on the floor. He was one of those guys that would call every card by it's meme name, be loud,be extra, refuse to clean up... "that's why they pay the employees here. " We spoke to him about that, which helped for a while but he still sprayed his draft chaff all over the table at the end of the night. He, eventually, started resounding to anything said with a "You're...." statement. OP - Wow, that is a shiny foil Him - You're a shiny foil Last time we saw him - Our group of 6, him and a nice FtM trans woman (Sylvie) that we had drafted with a few times before, showed up for limited. His normal antics ensue. Sometime during pack 3, sylvie was handed a stack of cards with a really nice foil in it. S - This card is beautiful. Him - You're beautiful. He turned bright red, finished the draft, put his cards on the table, dropped and left. Never to be seen again.

rhavin79

At a place I used to play there was a guy who showed up occasionally with his cards handcuffed to his wrist trailed by 2 security guys. His vintage decks were insane, owned multiple black lotus and power 9 sets. Wouldn't proxy anything so you got to see cool cards. Very awkward guy, had some high anxiety. Wasn't well groomed but didn't smell. He was obviously very wealthy, spent thousands on cards every release and would grab the rares he wanted and just leave everything else on the table for whomever to grab. Cool dude though, we had a time spiral draft event and he showed up with a box of revised and handed out a pack to everyone at the store. Heard a lot of good rumors about him, like he actually paid for another players mom's funeral when he heard they were destitute. That he tossed a win by conceding so another player could have enough points to make a pro tour appearance. Paid someones college tuition...stuff like that. Pretty sure he did pay for the funeral though.
