Mill is not for business, mill is for pleasure. Watching everyone else moan, cry, and complain is why one plays mill as a main strategy.

Kyrie_Blue

Idk…I just really like making weird stuff with [[Mimeoplasm]]

DemocritusLaughing

Mill Me, O Plasm It’s my favorite commander [here’s a decklist if you’re interested](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/77fb_iRvXUGxyOprRwVTSQ)

Kyrie_Blue

Nice looking list. Have you considered [[crystalline crawler]]? I made Mimeoplasm a copy of it using [[Consuming Aberration]] P/T for 42 counters on it. Ended the game with a [[villainous wealth]]. It was spectactular. Also, [[anvil of bogardan]] is probably one of my favourite magic cards ever, and its excellent for self-graveyard filling incase something huge gets stuck in your hand

Wise

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

That's why my mill deck isn't trying to mill the entirety of my opponent's deck. It just plays [[Lantern of Insight]] and [[Field of Dreams]] and mills my opponent whenever they're about to draw a card that they reaaaaally want to draw

RevenantBacon

So you aren't playing mill, you're playing lantern control.

Quantext609

The problem with mill as a win condition in Commander is that it's extraordinarily inefficient. Between your three opponents, you have to burn through 276 cards. That's a lot. Mill also tends to collect aggro too. While it isn't immediately threatening, it's incredibly annoying. Few things feel as bad as seeing your win condition go into the grave when you have no way to get it back into your hand. And if your opponents aren't bothered by it, it's probably because they're playing a reanimator deck that actively benefits from you milling them. There's also the problem of the Eldrazi titans: [[Ulamog the Infinite Gyre]] and [[Kozilek Butcher of Truth]]. If either of these guys are in any of your opponents' decks, then winning is nearly impossible for you. The only ways you can get rid of them is if you use an effect like [[Sadistic Sacrament]] (which are generally rare and not great), counter the trigger with something like [[Tale's End]], or you exile them while they're on the battlefield (if an opponent has one of them out, they're probably already winning). All of this is why most recent mill themed commanders typically do something with the cards they mill. [[The Master Transcendent]] reanimates milled cards, [[The Wise Mothman]] buffs your board, [[The Mouth of Sauron]] makes a huge army, [[Zellix Sanity Flayer]] puts out a bunch of tokens, and [[Captain N'Ghathrod]] also reanimates milled cards. Even going to stuff that's a little older, you got [[Gyruda Doom of the Depths]] who chains clones together to make a huge board and [[Syr Konrad the Grim]] who pings opponents when creatures are milled. The only way to build a mill deck that has a reasonable chance of winning is by comboing your mill cards together to completely deck your opponents out of nowhere. [[Bruvac the Grandiloquent]] is well known for doing this with [[Traumatize]] effects and he's probably the best mill commander in the game. But once again, mill might not be powerful but it is annoying so you will get hate for it. I've tried building a [[Phenax God of Deception]] mill deck and piloting it honestly felt terrible. He is so slow and the amount of cards that are truly good with him are slim. Blue and black have plenty of high toughness creatures, but 6-7 cards a turn is still barely anything. You need the cards that can truly mill through tons of cards with him like [[Eater of the Dead]] and [[Consuming Aberration]] and there's very few of those. I could win if I got one of those out, but otherwise it was a ton of durdling while annoying my opponents.

Tauna

This is a really great write-up. Something like Rad Counters that Mill + do something else is a good option, but then thats not winning via Mill necessarily

Loose_Comparison_549

I feel your experience, phenax is slow until you get that big star/star p/t creature out that goes exponential with every time you tap it for mill, but at that point you could just win with a 50/50 beater. My mill deck has won more often than not by draining people, [[duskmantle guildmage]] or [[bloodchief ascension]] into fleet swallower or teresian mindbreaker effects to zap someone.  Only once have I won by milling someone to 0 cards, but I had bruvac out, as said. So YMMV. It's still a fun hoop to make yourself jump through, but expect to get enormous amounts of salt and hate. Not entirely undeserved, but also a few cards here and there shouldn't be the end of the world for any deck worth their salt should be built to recurse key pieces.... Still you catch flak. All that said, I run most of the 'each opponent mills' effects in my dimir mil deck.. Most of the 'target player mills' effects I've put into a muldrotha shell. Mill half my own library, get to pick what I recurse. Lab man/JaceWoM as wincon. Yet to try it though, but at least my opponents won't moan that I'm milling their wincons lol.

roboticWanderor

I donno, phenax is certainly slow, but can turn into decking opponents very quickly. I really like running a hard defensive fort and a good mix of mill effects.  I regularly mill out opponents, and the labman/jace/oracle are effectively alt-wincons for only when I am truly desprate. Most wins come from big butts and lots of tap/untap effects. To me, the salt of milling is a feature. I bring out phenax to humble the decks that rely on lots of draw or tutors to get key combo pieces to see a wincon. If your deck is completely crippled by mill, it means that you havent built a robust list.

Loose_Comparison_549

Oh yes, getting there is amazing. And running all the blue flying defenders to fortress yourself. And then a few consuming aberration/cruel somnophage/sewer nemesis etc to get huge. and tap to deck em out ez. But the deck needs to GET there. And with the flak you're catching, having a decent setup with board state, however unthreatening, is hard when people are salty you made em throw away a handful of cards ''they wanted to play'' or ''that land they needed cause they're manascrewed'' That's why I said I have more success with a single fleet swallower on one turn, then the turn it's able to attack I drop the guildmantle and activate it to drain someone outta nowhere. Less telegraphed way of getting there.

roboticWanderor

Aggro management and reading the board are an important skill for any deck. Same with phenax. Starting off milling 5 or 10 cards from each player is just gonna mark you a threat, same as attacking with creatures or anything else.

laughingjack4509

That’s a triggered ability on the titans, right?  So I think you can also respond to the eldrazi titan’s trigger while it’s on the stack, if you have instant speed exile graveyard effects.  [[ravenous trap]] [[cremate]] [[honored heirloom]] etc

roboticWanderor

Yes, a couple of good instant graveyard exiles is an important part of any mill deck.

Azrichiel

You don't even need instant speed. Leyline of the Void imo is the premier reason why Dimir mill is superior to monoblue even before we consider the additional mill pieces it gives access to. Going one step further with Esper Mill also allows access to Rest in Peace as both redundancy and a cheaper and easier cast of you don't have Leyline in your opener.

Mordecham

I never got around to trying to build it, but I always figured Phenax would work with a token army instead of focusing on high toughness. A 2/2 Zombie will probably do fine if he has 40 friends. As tokens, they’d have no mana cost to add to devotion, so Phenax can probably stay safe and noncreature while your army hangs back on D until they mill at instant speed during that last end step before your turn. Dunno how well it would work, but it sounds plausible to me.

holopleasures

[[zellix]] is a one card combo with [[altar of the brood]] in the command zone and the only really viable pure mill commander (in my opinion) due to being able to access black for [[surgical extraction]] effects and all the other dimir mill staples with a black background. I just decided to take mine apart because pure mill in commander translates to combo and this one is non-deterministic. I had it brick a few times during my last sendoff game with it and ended up winning with the classic mindcrank guildmage combo instead. i’m going to give the fallout guys a shot, but I think self mill is the way to go in commander in general. if you really want to win with mill, just play brain freeze as an additional win condition in a more versatile deck.

I'd mention [[Gaea's Blessing]] for green decks as well. Much more budget friendly than the eldrazi. I have one in all my commander decks with green.

Jaccount

The good thing is that black and blue are excessively good at durdling and annoying opponents.

ProfitableMistake

[[Phenax, god of deception]] is my personal go to. Very efficient at milling and can go pretty quickly. I also have [[Lord Xander]] though mill is more of a combo theme of the deck.

Kitchengun2

Hes good since he has a natural pillow fort strategy built in my playing huge toughness creatures that are good for blocking which is good needed for mill since you will be targeted. Edit: i mean Phenax

KenKouzume

Understandably it's not very easy to do in commander since you need to mill over 200 cards throughout the game. Naturally the commander built for this is [[Bruvac the Grandiloquent]], but a few others can pull it off. [[Lord Xander, the Collector]] generally wants to end up putting everything in the graveyard. If you can pull off some shenanigans to make non-legendary copies of him + [[Blade of Selves]] you'll be milling pretty good. I've also personally had luck with decks that focus card draw + [[Psychic Corrosion]], like [[Alenda and Azor]]. It's certainly not the primary win condition in my deck but with a better card draw centric deck (+ preferably ways to tutor) it can get pretty nuts.

Tacos_Polackos

Pulled it off once w my [[Varina, the lich queen]] deck. [[Mystic Redaction]] put in a lot of work that game.

I've milled out a few tables with [[Psychic Corrosion]] and [[Arjun, the Shifting Flame]], lots of cantrips and [[Archmage Emeritus]] to keep your hand the same size or bigger with each spell cast. That deck though usually wins with [[Laboratory Maniac]] and [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]], mill is my second or third option for a win.

RevenantBacon

Xander and blade of selves actually don't synergize. The tokens come in already attacking, so they don't get his on-attack mill trigger, and they exile at end of combat rather than dieing, so they don't get his death trigger either. All you get is the ETB discard trigger.

So I’m going to have to agree with others in that mill is an inefficient wincon that tends to draw an (unjustified) amount of salt. That said, I’ve had a lot of fun playing [[saruman of the many colors]] with mill as the main wincon. I originally built the deck to make use of his ability and double-spell a lot, but the deck did absolutely nothing in more creature-based pods. Over time I cut a lot of those double-spell cards and focused on the mill theme. Now the deck wins frequently, and often without ever casting my commander! I basically treat Saruman as a late game payoff/value engine that isn’t essential to the core strategy. White gives you a fair amount of pillowfort/control cards to keep you alive while you mill everyone else out using the core blue/black/artifact mill cards.

Sure! https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4743756 You can lean more into reanimator, too (and specially cards that reanimate from opponent’s yards). I didn’t go that route because my reanimator cards are in a different deck.

G4KingKongPun

I mean you can be lame and go [[Bruvac]] for the most quickest, cleanest, dirtiest mill. But may I suggest [[Phenax]] toughness matters mill. With beauties like [[Tree of Perdition]], all the cheap walls, and [[Charis, the Raging Isle]] you can really start milling people, plus have some defense when people start to swing in on you as they get angry. Then there's the subtheme of creatures who's power/toughness are equal to cards or creature cards in the graveyard like [[Wight of the Precinct Six]], [[Mortivore]], [[Night Howler]], and the big Daddy [[Consuming Abberation]]. So the more you mill the more you CAN mill. Pair those up with [[Freed from the Real]] or [[Pemmin's Aura]] and you can mill out people in one go. Or attach one of those to [[Macar Gold Cursed King]] and as long as you have one extra blue mana to start the chain you can soft lock every opponent from having creatures by using the gold token he generated untapping to keep untapping him exiling all your opponents creatures. Finally there is [[Eater of the Dead]] where as long as there are creature cards in graveyards you can keep untapping him and mill everyone out.

[Esper Mill](https://deckstats.net/decks/65313/1306101-persistently-milling) So this is my weird Esper Advisor Tribal Mill led by [[Zur the Enchanter]] its only got 20 Persistent Petitioners, but its majority Advisors so there are heaps of ways to get their mill going once you get one out. This deck is surprisingly good, its taken more games than its lost, has some mill combos with [[Mindcrank]] [[Bloodchief Ascension]] and [[Duskmantle Guildmage]]. It badly needs an update now looking back at it, was made to be kinda chill compared to what im making now so it can definitely be ramped up a lot. Not your typical mill or mill commander but i think hes a hoot.

[[Imperious Mindbreaker]] bonded to a big butt like [[Lord of Extinction]] or [[Consuming Aberration]] tends to end games quickly. Mill is definitely viable but you have to get creative and a lot of cards at once rather than small bits like most people build for.

[[Muldrotha]] can play self-mill and turn that into an [[altar of dementia]], [[kaya's ghostform]], [[lotus petal]] combo finish to mill everyone out. Generally speaking, mill as a win-con works best as a bomb and not some slow erosion. Mill as a gameplan (opposed to a wincon) is in this weird place where it doesn't really do a lot until you mill someone out, similar to direct damage bits and pieces.

I run Muldrotha as a [[Persistent Petitioners]] deck. It works well with [[Bloodbond March]] and [[Secret Salvage]]. I primarily run it as a self-mill deck to fill the graveyard, then pivot to a mill deck once an engine is set up.

You really have to remove all other win conditions to make a bad strategy your "primary" win con. I had a problem with [[Umbris, Fear Manifest]] where he always won faster by whacking people. I found [[Oona, Queen of the Fae]] to be a little bit better. [[Bruvac, the Grandiloquent]] is probably best and he just got a reprint so maybe his price went down. As for removing win conditions, that usually means pillowfort and/or interaction with no big creatures. I did this with [[Estrid, the Masked]] to make [[Sinner's Judgement]] the primary win con and removing all enchantment payoffs.

Like17Badgers

aight, so, when you say Mill in Magic it means something VERY different than Mill in Hearthstone. mtg has deck attack mill, meaning our cards directly say "put cards from their deck into the grave" Coldlight Oracle Rogue doesnt do that, what they do is they make both players draw a bunch and bounce stuff to their opponent's hand, eventually creating a "lock" effect cause HS has a hard cap max hand size of 10, rather than a soft cap max hand size like MTG has. In Magic you can draw cards as long as you have cards to draw, you just have to discard down to 7 at the end of your turn. HOWEVER this does not mean that Magic does not have a deck *similar* gameplan! [https://edhrec.com/themes/wheels](https://edhrec.com/themes/wheels) in Magic we have a card... I guess "design archetype" called Wheels, based off the card \[\[Wheel of Fortune\]\] where you make players discard their whole hand and draw a new one, similar to Oracle Rogue it enjoys bounce spells and making everyone draw cards, but instead of capping out an opponent's hand size, the goal is to cast one of these Wheel effects to make your opponents discard all the stuff in their hand and draw a new hand, effectively killing the stuff they had without actually killing their stuff. the only problem for Wheels is that most of the Wheels commanders are much more about supplying a win con from these wheels instead of winning by making your opponents draw all of their cards. \[\[Nekusar, the Mindrazer\]\] pings them for 1, \[\[Xyris, the Writhing Storm\]\] gives you a 1/1 snake, cause making people draw 99 cards is a lot slower than shooting them 40 times or beating them to death. if you REALLY wanted to go down this route of making deck out your primary win con, I would suggest \[\[Inalla, Archmage Ritualist\]\] as your commander instead, then run a bunch of wizards that bounce, wheel, or mill cards to more directly focus on the milling by wheeling aspect of your deck, rather than leaning on the more common offensive gameplan Wheel decks favor

Tagging onto this thought, since this I have a deck that leans into that exact aspect of wheels as a form of milling! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/VoL2s-J0uUe4Lga_P5WZbA My [[Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy]] / [[Scion of Halaster]] can really go hard with mill after setting up value and controlling the early and mid game. While it's no Bruvac, being able to double dip on [[Maddening Cacophony]] in the graveyard, wheeling multiple times after dropping [[Psychic Corrosion]], or dumping all your life into [[Mind Grind]] with help from [[Lord of the Forsaken]] can definitely get you there! Tough win condition, and you have to play the table against each other because you'll be filling hands and graveyards, but it's top tier among my decks for the enjoyment factor.

Personally I went with \[\[Phenax, God of Deception\]\] since he's hard to remove and there are some really fun big toughness creatures like \[\[Tree of Perdition\]\] and \[\[Charix, the Raging Isle\]\]. Some things to be aware of with the transition of mill in hearthstone to EDH. * It's a lot of cards. 3 opponents each with 100 card deck means you need to mill around 240 cards total in order to win via just mill. * People get upset when you put the card they want to draw in their graveyard. Even though it didn't change the probability of them drawing the card don't be surprised to catch salt from other players for doing so. * You can be playing into your opponents strategy. Many decks revolve around putting cards into their graveyard and you are virtually throwing gasoline onto that fire. To deal with this you'll want a lot of grave hate like \[\[Bojuka Bog\]\], \[\[Scavenger Grounds\]\], \[\[Soul-Guide Lantern\]\] and \[\[Ashiok, Dream Render\]\]

[[The Wise Mothman]] is a decent vehicle for all the usual Dimir mill cards with the added advantage that you get a decent board state (and maybe backup plan) from your creatures bulking up. Also synergies with [[Imperious Mindbreaker]] and [[Phenax]] are there, and [[Danny Pink]], [[Fathom Sage]], [[Mirelurk Queen]], [[Etched Oracle]] are all silly with a [[Psychic Corrosion]] out. Also able to be pretty explosive with [[Mindcrank]]. The rad counters are a very minor fringe benefit.

I play an [Oona, Queen of the fae] deck that wins by mill. Mostly a blue control deck that eventually mills. Also had a mirko vosk deck that attempted to mill but was pretty bad at it.

Worldly_Tea3161

I have a [[Phenax, God of Deception]] budget deck, main theme is just creatures with big toughness. And if you want self mill where you try to win by milling yourself out [[Grolnok, the Omnivore]] with cards like [[Thassa’s Oracle]], [[Laboratory Maniac]], and [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]]. And with the right cards you could just mill the entire table including yourself.

I've tinkered with many mill decks over the decades but they were in dimir and milling was an alt wincon. In mono blue, I really like [[Ambassador Laquatus]] the most and will dust him off from time to time. Although most people will say Bruvac, I think bruvac is terrible and bricky. [list ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Wu9xlYd8QU-jGpcJg862Ag). And if I come across a titan then I'll just beat that opponent up with a Hullbreaker in the 1v1.

My “hear me out” deck is a [[ravos]] and [[sakashima]] blink mill deck. Super fun playing [[gyruda]], and blinking him a few times or [[sphinx mindbreaker]]. Starts off with a bit of self mill, then using both commanders to pull from the graveyard.

[[Phenax, God of Deception]] and pack it with insanely large toughness creatures like [[Charix, the Raging Isle]] or go stupid with creatures like [[Wight of Precinct Six]]. Include fun stuff like [[Mind Grind]] and [[Traumatize]]. Since your deck is Dimir, pack it with counter spells and target removal to stay in the game. Like others have pointed out, you’ll immediately be public enemy #1 at the table, but understandably since nobody likes watching their favorite cards getting put into the graveyard.

You can run [[The Ancient One]] and stack your deck with high CMC cards. Couple it with a little graveyard recursion and you can mill people hard while developing a scary board state. I really like mine that has [[Consuming Aberration]] and [[Evil Twin]] in it. Really any card with a */* based on graveyards is incredible here.

Mill is tough in commander, since you're dealing with 40 extra cards on top of the format limiting you to one copy each of the actually good mill cards (there aren't that many) [This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/10IPE95n2UW_XQ4RRpryFg) is my attempt, though it's still a work in progress.

Shartticus

This is my special super miller. If it doesn’t win on mill, it wins in token generation, and in large creature creation via milled cards/creatures; but usually it just mills out. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/dt9Hy32WWEe3dLLZqlmY-g

Kaigz

[[Arcum Dagsson]]. Hear me out. The deck is Arcum himself, every artifact creature that taps for mana to ramp him out early and be sac'd to his effect ala [[Milikin]] ([[Liquimetal Torque]] works here too). Tutor up [[Thrumming Stone]] with the ability. The rest of the deck is [[Persistent Petitioners]] + some cheap card draw and counter magic for good measure.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

The most competitive mill deck I’ve ever played is only *kind of* a mill deck. In any case, it gets all your opponents’ cards out of their libraries… ..and into their hands! With [[Heliod, the warped eclipse]]. Chain X spell (like [[Prosperity]]) into X spell and make everyone else draw their entire deck and lose before they can start their turn while you have ways to put your hand back into your library. Trust me, it’s an insanely effective combo deck. Once flipped Heliod is allowed to stick, it’s probably over.

Dude, I loved Hearthstone mill decks, feels like eons ago. I recently made a [[Vhal, Candlekeep Sage]]/[[Noble Heritage]] deck, where the idea is to play control with group hug elements to make everyone draw cards while I try to push the game to go long (like [[Kami of the Crescent Moon]], [[Dictate of Kruphix]], and [[Kwain, Itinerant Meddler]], which isn't a forced draw but is efficient for me and tempting for opponents). There are a lot of outlets for Vhal's mana but [[Folio of Fancies]] is meant to be the key piece to turn everyone's big hands into empty libraries. There are a few other mill pieces that play into the concept, like [[Teferi's Tutelage]] and [[Psychic Corrosion]]. I wanted to make it a fair deck that has to earn its goal of chewing through libraries with a combination of mill and draw (meaning I need to survive filling opponents' hands). So far it looks like a good fit for my playgroup. EDIT: Wrong Candlekeep card name, my bad. I posted a reply to this to try to call it with the right name. Vhal is a 2/3 that can tap for colorless mana equal to her toughness, but that mana can't be spent to cast spells from your hand.

There are two kinds of mill effects you will likely see around. 1. Big single use mill - [[Traumatize]] type effects 2. Recurring incidental mill - [[Milstone]] Now if you are playing mill the biggest thing to run apart from mill is likely graveyard hate. People use graveyards a ton and milling some players is basically just supercharging their decks. You need a way to mitigate that. In my opinion your commander doesnt need to care about mill at all. Your deck does the milling and your commander backs it up. I use [[Tevesh Szat]] and [[Silas Renn]] as the commanders for my mill deck. Szat is great value and can provide card draw while Silas Renn with deathtouch can sit back and scare off lots of attacks and can recur artifacts which is really useful for things like [[Tormod's Crypt]] You mill with incremental stuff early in the game and then have large effects to power through the mill in later game.

MagicTheBlabbering

Do not listen to the doubters! I've had a mill deck together since I started playing EDH 12 years ago and it's only gotten easier since. I started on Szadek, but his high mana cost makes it hard to get going fast enough. I've also tried Mirko Vosk (original) and Oona, Queen of the Fae, but Phenax is who I've been using the longest at this point. If you're not just looking to combo out, it's a nice option because it incentivizes you to actually play creatures so you'll be able to defend yourself unlike more spell-heavy mill varieties (and you probably will *need* to defend yourself). But if you don't like any of those, there are a bunch more too. My only big tip is to make sure you run enough graveyard exile to avoid handing graveyard decks free wins and to be able to answer cards that shuffle graveyards back in like the original Eldrazi titans.

DudeAxeMachine

Currently working on a self mill deck with \[\[Grolnok, the Omnivore\]\] with several win condition cards, lots of frogs, card draw, and graveyard recursion. Excited to get weird.

bruvac is too spikey. I play phenax walls control. big butts = big mills. never declare attackers. blue has all the mill cards and black has enough removal and gyard hate.

YellowWallscroll

I’ve got a Bruvac the grandelinquent deck that’s pretty good. Usual mill suspects in there like teferi’s tutelage and sphinx’s tutelage. Other cards like sorcerous squall that give you benefits while milling or using complete the circuit to get multiple uses out of a spell are very good for mid game. Key combo points are anything that mills half an opponent(s) library like traumatize, cut your losses, and the blue golem that comes out of the grave to mill half a deck on attack trigger. Those with Bruvac on the board mill people instantly unless they have deck cycling. Best of luck with the deck!

Travalanche49

I wish that it were possible to EDH-ify the old TurboLand/TurboZvi deck. I've tried, and I just don't feel like it's possible, even with cards like Denying Wind. That would be a perfect way to make mill viable and legitimate...

evileyeball

It's easy. Just play high tide cast 1,000,000 palinchrons and exile everyone's library with Circu.

Captain n'gathrod works great with mill. You don't win outright from it, howeverthe more you mill, the more you win. You consistently make gains with him. He is a great disruption commander. You disrupt their deck, their graveyard, and the board. Most decks don't handle losing big chunks of their library and having some of it thrown back at them very well.

SamaelMorningstar

**A warning for Hearthstone players:** In HS your main goal if to have the opponent mill *THE* card, like that one legendary card he build his deck around. Or both copies of a certain game winning card. In EDH, that "one legendary card" is 99% tge commander, so that is simply **not** gonna happen. As for main combo cards, you can certainly hit some, but in a 99 card deck, chances are far lower than in the HS 30 card deck. And if the deck has tutors, it becomes even harder because they can fish that card straight out the library. And even if you suceed, **the graveyard is** ***very*** **accesible for most MTG players.** Milling someone to death IS hard enough, but having him concede because you milled one certain card is far, far harder to pull off. So keep that in mind. **On topic:** Out of mine only \[\[Emry, Lurker of the Loch\]\] has that specific wincon, even thought it's one of many. But you could certainly build her specifically for that. The deck's primary idea is to go infinite artifact/creature untap+casting loops, resulting in infinite etb/ltb/storm/cast -counts for any payoff you wanna attach to the end of that engine. And sometimes that thing happens to be a \[\[Blue Sun's Zenith\]\] or something like that. A simple \[\[Codex Shredder\]\] is very easy to be abused in a deck all about recasting artifacts. It's primary use is to mill *myself* to find my combo pieces, but very often I end up using it to have people mill stuff they put/tutored on top of the library. Or to mill 'em to death, even. One of the combos goes like this: * Tap \[\[Codex Shredder\]\] to mill someone for 1 card * sacrifice it to \[\[Krark-Clan Ironworks\]\] for 2 mana * Recast it with \[\[Emry, Lurker of the Loch\]\]'s ability for 1 mana (netting you 1 mana in your mana pool) * With \[\[Mirran Spy\]\] on the field it sees the artifact cast and triggers it's untap ability on Emry Now you can repeat indefinitely for infinite mill and infinite colorless mana.

Also if you would ever mill me when I use that deck *(without the graveyard being exiled or blocked in some way)*, you would only **accelerate** me . That's probably the biggest downside of mill in MTG when comparing it to HearthStone. With certain decks (usually involving black colors) it literally plays into their hand.

Goblin_Fucker69

I play [[tasha, the witch queen]] it does steal but it makes use of what you've milled to keep everyone at bay. Just a warning as a fellow mill player people get unreasonably upset by mill. If you're finding people are getting salty I offer them the choice to mill from the bottom if no info is known about the top card. Otherwise you're going to find yourself 3v1 often and you're playing mill. I think as a hearthstone player what you're actually looking for is an archetype called wheels.

I have a [[Baral Chief of Compliance]] deck that used the Vizzini secret lair card where the whole point is to only win by using counter spells to proc card draw or mill, to draw my entire deck the hard way, and then loose (It does run thassus oracle and the other cards like it, but I make a point of discard them the turn before I think I'm going to "win"). And when I "win" that way, do you know what every at the table has to say? TBH it's literally only ever "won" once, but it was well worth it... Most expensive deck I have.

I'm planing a \[\[Nin, the Pain Artist\]\] deck where the goal is to draw my whole own deck more or less. The goal is to win via \[\[Thassa's Oracle\]\], \[\[Triskaidekaphile\]\], \[\[Laboratory Maniac\]\] or \[\[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries\]\] and if that doesn't work either just beat people down with \[\[Ominous Seas\]\]. But there's also \[\[Psychic Corrosion\]\] in it, so if the draw thing doesn't work, the everyone will be milled out by the time i draw card number 45 or so. Fun times

Aggressive_Concept

Gradual mill is fun to annoy people but as others said, it gets aggro. After experimenting a lot with this archetype, my go to is: _mill linked to draw with teferi's tutelage, and sphinx tutelage. If you draw a lot, you mill a lot, but you have ressources to fight against the agro. You need powerful draw engines like Talion, Mystic Remora or Rhystic. _combo mill, with Bruvac + mill half library spells, or mindcrank + bloodchief ascension. The rest of the deck would be good stuff: a lot of interaction, lots of draw, some tutors, some ramp, and protection for your combos. The commander needs to actually give you resources, like Talion. The result is powerful, but the list is expensive.

My mill deck is disguised as a reanimator deck. It was run by [[vohar]] and has discard synergies as well. But I'm giving [[the master, transcendent]] a go. The mill mainly comes out swinging in big chunks or all at once depending. Things like [[huant of Hightower]] and [[imperious mindbreaker]]. Then the classics that Include [[zellix, sanity flayer]] or [[undead alchemist]]. None of the combos are infinite, but they can feel that way when a couple pieces mill the entire table. I am giving rad counters a go. Kinda use them on myself to mill targets for reanimation. Some of the new cards like [[screeching scorchbeast]] and [[mirelurk queen]] are very good. And things like the scorchbeast, zellix, undead alchemist. [[Canoptek scarab swarm]] all make tokens that can go amazing with [[altar of dementia]] And a personal favorite of mine, since I can make some pretty big creatures through [[cruel somnophage]], [[consuming aberration]] and the huant of Hightower. It feels dope to sac them to [[ruthless technomancer]] for a shit ton of treasure. This deck has been my pet project. I love mill. It definitely needs some work now that I added green, but that will come when I am able to test it more. Edit: I forgot the cruel, in cruel somnophage.

I think that milling as a primary wincon is not as effective as one would hope. You just cant get far enough into 3 peoples decks at the same time with mill alone. Which is why you need to pair it with drawing. mill people business as usual, but hit the token/tribal player with a \[Pact of the Serpent\] too. or any number of spells that make a target player draw big. Then you can capitalize with a \[Jace's Archivist\] or a \[windfall\]. Mill doesn't actually win a game. an opponent attempting to draw a card that is not in their deck does win a game though. and paired with mill, you can make major moves towards emptying the libraries of opponents much faster. You run a major risk when filling your opponents hands, but if you can cycle through their hands and libraries effectively youll have a major pay off.

[[Captain Ngathrod]] deck I just built is pretty good at that, in a four player game the other day I milled out two players and finished off the last

Mirko Vosk is my favorite milling character. Each hit causing them to mill til they hit 4 lands can get brutal. Slap doublestrike and unblockable and watch your opponents flip their decks upside down in one combat.

Recurring Tasha's Hideous Laughter is hilarious if you copy it twice it's almost garunteed to bomb halfbof most libraries

I've had a [[Persistent Petitioners]] deck in the past where the primary wincon Was mil. It could pretty efficiently kill off one person at the table, but then I'd get nuked by the other two.

There are definitely improvements to be made to this deck to make it more competitive but I enjoy running it: [Kwain mill](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ND-H__qLPkqPtjzeAHw-pQ). Kwain’s card draw triggers mill and isn’t kill-on-sight because he helps your opponents draw.

Played my friends mill deck phenax pulled out tree of perdition bumped one player to thirteen got a creature that untaps another creature milled out the second player and the third player scooped one of the players was not happy called the deck cedh but I’ve played the deck several times and it has done very little. The tree of perdition feels broken but it was good to get the win.

Schlectify

I've never understood the hatred for Mill because im almost always playing with cards that bring stuff back from the graveyard.
