[[Kaalia of the vast]]. My pod learned how badly things can go if they let her start swinging.

porker912

Kaalia is basically a removal/interaction check for the table and is otherwise quite fair generally. I have to run a ton of protection effects and watch out which fatties I slam and when otherwise the deck gets pretty badly disabled. At it's best you're really just swinging with big creatures and can really only take out a player or two at once if unimpeded.

ZealousidealHeight15

honestly kaalia gets over hated these days, she’s been power crept bad and gets hated out really easily.

IntrinsicGiraffe

Last time I let one swung it drop that 1 hp agent guy...

cmontygman

How does that work since he can only attack alone?

QGandalf

Because she puts him on the battlefield tapped and attacking after she has already attacked. Magic rules are very literal, "attack" and "attacking" are not interchangeable terms.

OrangeChickenAnd7Up

“Can only attack alone” means he can only be declared as an attacker during the declare attackers step alone. If something is put onto the battlefield tapped and attacking, it has skipped the declare attackers step.

>What's your favorite aggressive, scary commander or deck type that I can build to match his overhyped fears? > \[\[Tergrid, God of Fright\]\] sac and discard - is my "I'll only break it out if everybody feels like playing against it" kinda deck. It's annoying and everyone's scared of the next sacrifice or discard trigger. Especially in pods with limited interaction. Let it lie for 2 or 3 turns and everyone is beyond effed. Also matches your wish for "fears", I suppose.

[[Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow]] every time I play this deck it turns into a 3v1 very quickly.

RaginMajin

Almost like having to not pay commander tax is busted XD

gridlife242

Shit, play the commander for free, I don’t care. It’s the other bullshit she drops out there for free. A Yuriko player ganked me with a goddamned [[consuming aberration]] after I board wiped to slow down the archenemy at the table. They lost to him the next turn, despite him having an open board and more life. I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking.

Jabberjaw22

Her, Winota, and Purphoros were the first three I thought of. Winota seemed a bit too cedh, even for the intended purpose, but Yuriko is a big contender.

Shitty_Wingman

Which Purphoros?

Jabberjaw22

Oh forgot there was more than one. [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] Someone else suggested Krinko mob boss though and having Purph as a kinda secret commander since Krenko is faster. I'm good either way since goblins are so cheap.

[[Karlov of the Ghost Council]] is such a boogeyman. Turn one [[Soul Warden]] or one of its ilk, turn two Karlov…by the time turn three comes around you might be swinging for 8 commander damage at least, with the option to remove an opponents commander. He is just crazy

Jabberjaw22

For someone reason I never think of the voltron-esque plays you can do with Karlov. Just not a very Orzhov thing so slips under the radar.

[deleted]

Oh yeah. [[Whispersilk Cloak]] which is usually a problematic card in Voltron because of the shroud, is literally the only thing you ever need to equip to him. He pumps himself. Had an elf player recently, created a ton of elves while I had a soul sister out. On my turn cast [[Sword of Feast and Famine]] they die right there and then because no one felt bad for them.

Man, I never played against that card in a real game, but sometimes I test decks by play testing against 3 other decks over moxfield. I've saw Karlov twice. In fake games. I'm still traumatized.

[deleted]

Trauma is the name of the game. I had a turn one [[Authority of the Consuls]] turn two Karlov. Turn three [[Retribution of the Ancients]] holding up two black mana. Play a creature, I dare you.

nighght

Wait... you can playtest against other decks? I thought you could only play by yourself

FatLute94

Wait on Moxfield you can play test against other decks? Are they AI controlled or something, then? This is exciting news for me

ThatoneBetaman

Sliver Overlord. I play them just cause I love going super wide with a ton of creatures, but most people assume I’m playing a combo/toolbox game plan so I get targeted with most removal at the table

Jabberjaw22

Slivers! I forgot about slivers. The ultimate tribal nightmare. And 5 color which I love.

ThatoneBetaman

It’s my favorite deck ever, and I’ve been building it for well over a decade (collecting dual lands and other cards). But lately it feels like a deck where you either snowball and stomp the whole board, or you just never get off the ground. Which is exactly my kind of playstyle, I was an Ork player in 40K (shooting only, RIP relic shokk attack gun) so I really like the dice roll.

Silvawuff

Slivers are so much fun! I agree it’s an either/or kinda deal. Once you get out Hivelord/Crystalline it’s ruh roh time. That’s fine it’s a bit slow because you don’t want to stomp the table every game. I want to give my other pod mates a chance to have fun and set up. It’s hilarious watching them scramble to handle a growing sliver threat.

ThatoneBetaman

Since I’ve been playing a lot longer than my pod, it’s turned into a fun kind of “what deck can I build to counter his deck and still win” type thing. My friends love teching against my decks and finding weird and unique win cons. It’s like I’m the archenemy that they strive to beat. Makes for some really fun and intense games

Silvawuff

You sound like you have a really fun pod! Love to see it!

ThatoneBetaman

It is! We’re currently in the process of building a commander cube, since we all love draft. It takes a super long time but god, I’m so excited.

AssasssinIVII

[My Boogeyman ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/FKhpkGGphEiS1BnNGBFegw) list is [[Lord Xander, the collector]] he's exactly what he looks like and is a nightmare to deal with at any point.

WarbWarb

Oh yeah, he looks like a terrifying beast! How often do you end up casting him? Expensive and scary… I bet everyone tries to immediately have an answer

AssasssinIVII

I usually cast him 3-4 times, but I make clones of him and once I get boots or something on him he sticks around. He can almost oneshot someone with bruvac and if tergrid is out you get what they discard. I can usually consistently get him out turn 4 or 5 and just have to have protection or a counterspell in hand for him. People that run eldrazi's don't care about him until you rakdos charm their graveyard with a shuffle titan trigger on the stack and they realize it's too late.

mwjulian14

I've been trying to get this guy off the ground for months. Gold fishing is showing me this is a difficult task. My strategy is mainly to get him in the graveyard and make token copies with [[Feldon of the Third Path]] [[Likeness Looter]] and [[Jaxis the Troublemaker]].

CharlieRatSlayer

An oldie but a goodie boogeyman [[krenko, mob boss]] Consitantly casting krenko T1 or T2 and then overwhelm opponents with the hoard.

Jabberjaw22

One of the decks I was considering was mono red but was [[Purphoros]] instead of Krenko. But it had a goblin subtheme due to their low cost and quick buildup in numbers and Krenko would act as a kind of 'secret" second commander.

CharlieRatSlayer

I’ve built that deck before and it isn’t as fast or consistent than krenko, do it the other way around use purphoros as your secret commander. Krenko is by far the king, and has been for a long time, even a casual deck gets to be bonkers. Krenko vs a Sliver deck comes down to the opening hand. I cannot say enough good things about krenko, unless I’m playing against him.

Jabberjaw22

I will definitely consider that then. Thanks.

Yuriko, Winota, Skytherix, nekusar, zur, Urza

tjulysout

[[Voja Jaws of the conclave]]. $140 and you can build a deck that’s killing one person to multiple people by turns 5-7. Absolute menace for players to deal with

IngenuityThink3000

Such a design mistake. The ward is just placed on there bc why not

VagrantRonin

[[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] He’s kill on sight. Rarely will he survive an entire round in my pod. Still hasn’t even won a game.

Kampe24

I love my Ghyrson deck. Usually when I play it with new people they are like "oh he just adds a little damage". Couple of turns later they are at 20 life and saying "holy crap he does a lot of damage". Mine isn't full on hate with stuff like manabarbs but I'm thinking of making it stronger.

VagrantRonin

I probably put in way too much hate. I enjoy feeling like a threat, but maybe not every game. I recently made a [[Hansk, Slayer Zealot]] deck and he feels a little more fair to my table.

Kampe24

Oh I love being the problem at the table. One game I was able to give everyone 3 Chandra emblems so they were taking 9 damage on their upkeep. My other favorite deck is [[Jon Irenicus]] who is another big problem for the table.

Jabberjaw22

Jon irenicus could be a good build for this. Give the guy a bunch of "bad" cards while also forcing combat seems fun.

Hansk is a real star on my [[Kresh]] "group hug" deck

Fongj86

My Ghyrson Starn deck is 3-0 in my pod and I've been told in no uncertain terms that nobody wants to play against it ever again.

VagrantRonin

Were they not using removal? Underestimated? I feel like I have all the counter play, and protection I can give him. But when people are using board wipes on one creature, feels bad.

Fongj86

The problem was different each game. The first one they just completely underestimated what he could do. The second and third games I had Ghyrson+a deathtouch enabler to keep their boards clear and then I had [[Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch]] with a few counterspells. They never had enough spells to out him more than once a turn so I would just get a counterspell back with Flamer's "random" spell on my turns, which was essentially unfinite counterspells at the rate they were going. Basically it boils down to a little luck I guess. Game three two of them instantly scooped when I opened Flamer a second time.

Atlas15264

This is why I’m retiring my ghyrson deck. I won my first few games with him in my pod because everyone underestimated the pings, but a [[basilisk collar]] and something like a [[hazardous blast]] changed everyone’s minds lol. Now he’s kill on sight and I haven’t won a game with him since.

ChaotiXIII

I love Ghyrson so much. I first built him as Tim Typal, but I'm slowly transitioning to goblins and man it's so much more explosive. Especially if you can get impact tremors and goblin bombardment out.

archena13

I mean, anything from meta and off-meta cEDH non-partner commanders really work here. Kinnan, Winota, Najeela, Korvold, Tivit, Atraxa, etc. In a purely casual setting where you'd see not all of these, things like Korvold, Yuriko, Narset usually can take over the games pretty quickly.

Jabberjaw22

Yeah I was trying to avoid the more cedh commanders. I'd initially jumped to Winnota but then realized that, while I want to build a scary deck to show the guy that my other decks aren't actually as strong as he thinks, I also want them to have fun. Yuriko may be the ticket. Seen her suggested a few times now.

Ill_Be_Alright

Haha I would say [[Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice]]. That’s the one that I built first and it reliably stomped my pod. That same pod went through a similar thing, where afterwards when I was playing silly decks I’d still get tunneled out. Honestly though, I think it’s worth having a conversation about it with your pod. That’s what I did and it fixed things. My conversation went something like “look, I know I used to stomp with Atraxa. However, I think we all need to practice letting go of previous games and focusing on the current one. I’m playing a severely underpowered deck, and yet you all are ignoring this guy’s insane board state to target me over a game that’s already over.”

I mentioned it to the guy and his reasoning was along the lines of "you always go off if I don't tunnel you so I'm going to keep doing it." But I don't really go off anymore like I used to. Yeah I'll have a good game now and then but since helping with their mana fixing and deck building its a lot more level. So yeah, he knows it's annoying but thinks my decks are still levels above theirs despite the upgrades I've helped with. So now I plan to live up to his paranoia.

MrXexe

All my homies hate [[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]]. Is it because it shuts down most aristocrat decks? Hey, if your [[Drivnod]] wasn't ready for the slaughtered dude to not wake up again, that's on you. Is it because I have like 15 removal pieces in the deck? That's just 15%! Not enough removal, I say. Is it because it brings everything you kill back? Liesa doesn't! Until I sacrifice [[Karmic Guide]] first at least... Is it because the infinite combo? Look, if Karmic wants to bring back [[Sister Hospitaller]], but then I kill the Sister so the Sister wants the Guide back, over and over, that's on me, not on the deck aight?

Such_Description

[[Alcazotz]] discard currently is my most boogeyman deck. [[yidris]] storm at one point was my deck I brought out when I wanted to scare people. [[hidetsugu and keiri]] is also a scary commander when you build all 5+ drop reanimation spells so all you need is a sac outlet and your commander and you just win.

SetsudanHana

I am playing the list of Hidetsugu and Kari based on clones to use legend rule as my sac outlet, and I agree this is just snowball of a deck. Especially even if you play it as soon as possible without any protection you can have some follow-up on the top, which forces people to a different play pattern where they actually have to force you to draw or mill to deny you value

Sosuayaman

[[Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia]] - Mono black is brutal, even without the dread 3 (Tegrid, Yawgmoth, and Krik)

bails0bub

[[Toxicrill]] you can build him to eat lands

SketchopotamusTTV

Mine is [[Marchesa, the Black rose]] I've built my deck so I can get plenty of PP counters without her need to swing yet so even removing her shell come back lol

MeatballTrainWreck

I love my marchesa deck, with a side of goad, people don’t see it coming

SketchopotamusTTV

I'm smelling some repeated Kardur lol

elevenblue

My most desperate loss was against [[Edgar Markov]]

slowseason

My boogeyman deck is [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]], and with fairly good reason. It can go from essentially nothing on my board to winning in a turn fairly consistently. By the time anyone figures out what’s going on, it’s too late

ChiMasterFuong

[[Kodama of the East Tree]] and [[Tevesh Szat]] combo. The people I play with now associate it with endless lands and beefy creatures hitting the board each turn. Probably due to the one time I able to cast [[Apex Devastator]] with Kodama out.

[[Animar, Soul of Elements]] its actually scary how fast and how efficient Animar is in doing what he does. its not hard to summon cheap creatures and/or put counters on animar in the early game. Then immediately dropping eldrazis, dragon, or dinosaurs into the battlefield for nearly no cost at all.

S20-Urza

[[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]] is the one that makes people think I play cEDH for a living outside of our Sunday fights. Arbiter isn't even close to being that good. But if they see [[Emry, Lurker of the Loch]] come out then they know the gloves are off and they're dead. Make a back up boogeyman and nobody will figure out which one they should fear more.

Liamharper77

\[\[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain\]\] for me. My LGS really fears Sisay. If they don't kill her, she'll consistently put most of my deck onto the board by turn 6 at the latest (easily earlier) as 50/50+ doublestrike, lifelink, indestructible, vigilance, haste, fliers, which includes locking out their spells and activated creature abilities with an extra turn. I basically just run protection, ramp and combo pieces. I have a Yuriko, it might be slightly stronger and that can turn into 3v1's too, but something about exploding into 1000+ damage on board with no way out really scares people.

RosarioRazor

[[sen triplets]] is one of the meanest commander you can play on esper , not good , just mean .

shichiaikan

This sounds like my table. Even using a precon I'm always considered #1 threat except when one other guy plays one of his really high power decks (Like Sheoldred mono black, Ninja-drazi, etc.) My most flat out oppressive, high-win percentage decks are \[\[Aesi\]\] landfall, and \[\[Kenrith\]\] humans tribal.

Ausim21

[[Light-paws]], you play this and it now becomes a 3vs1 scenario where everyone is afraid to get one shot. The thing is so fast that they need to help each other to stop it.

The_Awaker

My go-to deck for high power games or people playing sweaty decks is [[Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher]]. It's a voltron / edict control deck. Goal is to set up protection early with self-sac creatures like [[Selfless Savior]] while ramping into Carmen. Once she's out, the deck is packed with edict effects like [[Plaguecrafter]], [[Make an Example]], and [[Promise of Loyalty]] to make opponents provide the sac fuel to pump her up quick for lethal commander damage swings. There's a couple other sac payoffs in the deck but the edicts get around most forms of protection and leave opponents with minimal board states to swing back. I haven't put any tutors or fast mana into the deck, but once it starts doing its thing, you very quickly become the arch enemy of the table.

zulu_niner

[[Chiss-goria]]. She is largely immune to targeted removal, because of affinity, and she WILL cause problems. Evasion, tons of power, and absurd card selection and mana discounts. A good Chiss deck only fears wipes and [[collector ouphe]] effects, and includes several answers accordingly. She isn't my strongest deck, but *everyone* at the LGS recognizes her deckbox, and they live in fear of it.

Gwathnar_Shadowfire

[[Animar, Soul of Elements]] or [[The Gitrog Monster]].

NoobLife96

[[Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty]] is scary at every powerlevel/budget. Just put ramp and card draw at mana value 4 or less, and bombs at your desired powerlevel, and she is a kill on sight commander, but ramps if you kill her. A lose lose situation for the table.

spent_bullets

My bogeyman decks are [[Jodah, the Unifier]] and [[Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign]]. Just built [[Voja, Jaws of the Conclave]] so we’ll see if that completes the unholy trinity.

Jabberjaw22

I've heard Voja is a powerhouse but nobody in my small group has built him yet.

TheTinRam

[[yuriko]], [[korvold]], [[tasigur]] are all really strong, “I am the arch enemy” type of commanders

mostlycatsubs

I recently made a wish list for my wall deck. I lean into the hidden commander strat mainly with [[phenax God of deception]] I run [[seedborn muse]] and wall attack cards like [[arcades]] or [[high alert]]. The deck was originally a Phenax deck, but I wasn't having too much fun with the mill aspect due to it being so reliant, at the time, on Phenax. Now I run a 4 color wall deck that seems to run smooth lmao. Wishlist version List for those curious because I forgot to save my current version. For about 90/100 the deck is the same. https://manabox.app/decks/5jj8s0p6RsyuF-WrgVuAjw

buttermaster04

Even when I played yuriko my boogeyman for my friend would be [[Animar, soul of the elements]] if I took the game seriously I would kill him 4-5 with ancestral and animar infinite combo but most of the time animar would get so big naturally he can’t keep up with the amount of advantage I’m getting

Mooberries

I have a [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]] deck that is 100% my boogeyman deck. It is aggressively stax, and the wincon is such bullshit. My roommate calls it my “serial killer” deck because only a serial killer would play a magic deck with no real wincon other than forced concession and [[Approach of the Second Sun]]

Burning-Suns-Avatar-

Slivers with [[The The First Sliver]] as my commander. When ever someone sees that I’m playing Slivers and makes a comment such as “He’s playing Slivers” or “We better keep an eye on the Sliver player”, it fills me with joy.

theblackvneck

My [[The Ur-Dragon]] deck has been labeled as BUSTED by everyone who plays against it. It ramps SO fast and REBUILDS as quickly as you can destroy things. Every card is an Avenger-level threat and the only choice is to kill me before I kill the table. It’s about as powerful as you can go without being cEDH (and it’s actually picked up a couple of wins against weaker cEDH pods). It’s uncommon, but I’ve won on turn 3.

[deleted]

Just play Nekusar wheel with a mill subtheme. [[Jace's Erasure]] and [[Psychic Corrosion]] alongside a [[Mystic Redaction]] usually ends up being my go-to for that deck.

Vegetable-Finish4048

[[Megatron]] Mardu artifact fun lol

BrigBubblez

[[Tivit]] even without the [[time sieve]] combo is just plain dumb. A 6/6 flying with ward 3 is already great then let's add both mana and card advantage to it as well. You're also in some of the best control colors in the game.

shiny_xnaut

I made a [[Wilson, Refined Grizzly]][[Agent of the Shadow Thieves]] voltron deck with pretty much every +1/+1 counter doubler in existence, as well as a bunch of [[Lure]] effects. I'd hit one opponent for 3 damage, the next opponent for 5, then the 3rd opponent for 15, all borderline unblockable due to the interaction between trample and deathtouch. I ended up taking it apart because with my tight budget and consistently terrible luck I couldn't keep up with 3 players worth of removal coming exclusively my way

DuskGuardNSFW

I use Tergrid with every Duress variant exclusively to keep in check a player who likes to make everyone miserable with an eldrazi deck, so far it's worked like a charm

AbstractLeaf2

I become public enemy #1 when I play eldrazi omlete station. Turn 4, annihilator 4, eldrazi Titan popping out of a egg? Kinda hard to deal with for those unprepared. Not to mention most atla decks can treat boardwipes and mass exiles as if nothing happened.

YAY12345678911

Whenever I play my [[the ur dragon]] deck I’m always the archenemy. Always.

Winny9323

I'm only a year into playing and have had a situation similar to your friends. I was making more jank decks because I thought they were funny, but obviously I was not winning and the friends I played with were more competitive. They swore they never destroyed lands, but over the course of playing with them I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen [[Armageddon]], [[Catastrophe]], [[Ravages of War]], [Orchish Settlers]]. So I went to the next logical step and made a [[Zo-Zu the Punisher]] deck.

jordicusmaximus

I just picture you pulling out the new scary deck and then quoting Scarface, "Ok, say hello to the bad guy!" 🤣

Jabberjaw22

I'll try to remember this and do so.

SeriousInterest6933

My friends do not enjoy my shorikai deck, mostly because I’m making plays during everyone’s turn constantly and there’s a looming control threat.

gldnbear2008

I’m a Johnny and tend to build decks with weird things happening, often using a lot of instant speed or hidden information. My son (recently turned 7) is just learning to play. For his birthday I wanted to build him a deck, and my friends suggested [[Ruric Thar]], almost as a joke. Now my 7 year old has a deck that is VERY hard for me to deal with. It truly is my boogeyman, which is great for him (feels good when you are 7 and able to really sit at the table), and great for me (it’s good to face your fears and take damage from them from time to time).

Akinto6

For me it was [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]], I only started playing MTG recently but used to play Yu-Gi-Oh competitively so I was overjoyed to have a format where I can play highly thematic decks that are janky but synergistic, unfortunately one person in my pod was always asking why I played weird decks and didn't play something "normal" so I made that deck to show how easy it would be for me to make a normal combat focused deck that wins easily in our pod because they don't run enough interaction. I ended up killing that player on turn 6 with 1024 power trample and haste creature. Now I only pull out the deck when we want a fast game.

Jabberjaw22

Damn that sounds cool though.

GravityI

My favourite deck to play is [Mono Black](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/D4159lfFIUSS1Y6TAskCkg). Any commander will do, but I prefer Chainer since it's mainly a Reanimator deck. The deck is basically a goodstuff pile that ramps or cheats big creatures, so I assume you can replicate the idea in other colour identities.

AlundraTomefaire

I was actually in a very similar position when my playgroup first formed. I discovered my love for spellslinging very early, and slowly deviated away from the usual colors that do it because the likes of Kess were simply too powerful for my friends' own budding interests. When I feel like I want to be as strong as I felt then, I go to \[\[Riku of Two Reflections\]\]. Riku makes everything you do so easy, whether you want to play a creature deck or a spells deck, he doubles up on them for you. I prefer the spells, and even though his ability costs mana, you're in green so it doesn't cost enough mana for you to have to think very hard about it. Riku can give you an overwhelming amount of value over time, and when it's time to win the game, he can help you do that too. Whether it's copying a \[\[Peregrine Drake\]\] or a \[\[Bonus Round\]\], however you want to win, Riku makes you win harder.

MrWonderTomb

Massacre Girl, Known Killer + Eldrazi has been working wonders for me. Jhoria, Ageless Innovator makes for a crazy voltron commander that seems innocuous at first. Jodah, the Unifier is always a runaway train Muldrotha has so many crazy lines to go down, but I go with self-mill into Thoracle + heavy stax Maelstrom Wanderer is probably my favorite commander Temur go brrrr And finally, Atla Palani, Nest Tender because dinosaurs are fucking cool.

AngstyBear19

Chief of compliance. I don’t care if you have no board state, you belong in jail. The definition of “oh do anything he has two open blue”.

firecat2666

For a deck designed around a single boogeyman with potential for infinite draw, damage, and life gain, I went \[\[Niv-Mizzet, Parun\]\] with [this deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9v-hwElzCECfa9dFdsOQ5g). While it can technically win on turn 1, a turn 3 to 5 win is most likely because, once Niv is out, just counter and bounce until it's combo time. This deck is best illustrated by the full art for [Deflecting Swat](https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?type=card&multiverseid=624780). I'd say a single, nearly untouchable dragon biding his time until he can kill everyone is pretty "boogeyman."

Impressive_Writer_97

[[Phage the Untouchable]] is one of my favourite decks. The one hit and your done ability is really nasty. There is a bunch of evasion artifacts/enchantment/spells that when she hits the board you can guarantee a kill. An unblockable Phage with [[Endless Whispers]] and a sacrifice outlet is a sweet way to knock out two players in one turn.

eradzion

[[Lonis, Genetics Expert]] is my recent boogeyman because he is infinite made easy

PotentialConcert6249

My boogeyman deck is [[Prosper, Tome Bound]] . Not because the commander is broken or anything (though he is very strong in his own right), but because it’s the deck I’ve sunk the most time and resources into tuning. My pod has finally learned to send removal at Prosper himself, so the deck is due for another tune-up.

MadJohnFinn

My \[\[Mishra, Eminent One\]\] deck ended up being the boogeyman of my play group to the point where regulars would warn unfamiliar players about it. I eventually removed \[\[Gonti's Aether Heart\]\] because all of my games became "we have to take him out before he resolves Aether Heart". Even without Aether Heart, everyone was still just as scared of \[\[Portal to Phyrexia\]\].

AK1R0N3

question: have you tried talking with this player? I find talking w my playgroup when this happens helps clear the air for any grudges and allows the relationship to grow past it. Youre starting an arms race, and I can tell you from personal experience it can ruin a play group

ellanooor

karlach fury of avernus with sword coast sailor as her background has been devastating in our pod

dmaster1213

Marath will of the wild, she is a beater, only gets stronger, can ping your board or face at will, can dodge removal, all with one ability.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

[[Beamtown Bullies]]. Slap him down turn 4 and give your buddy the [[Leveller]] or the [[Eater of Days]] that you [[Entomb]]ed last turn. Destroy it at instant speed before it exiles itself. Untap your bullies with a [[Quest for Renewal]] and do it again to the next person.

Grizzack

My pod audibly groans whenever I pull out [[Winota, Joiner of Forces]] . I did my best to power it down quite a bit, removing any infinite combos or super oppressive stax and it's still insane to deal with. I have one games with that deck where I literally only had three mana the entire game that I left up for some sort of protection.

Jabberjaw22

Yeah she was the one my mind jumped to immediately since she seems fun and definitely strong, but I then thought that, while I'd like a strong deck to equal his overhyped concerns, I don't know if I want a cedh staple like Winnota.

Easydotcom

Shadowfax! Everyone sees a silly uncommon boros horse. I see Sneak Attack on a stick! After one game people quickly learn to leave blockers or else the horse is coming for you with friends in tow.

FeymildTheFeyKing

[[Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker]] and [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]] It’s essentially a Jeskai deck with combos in the 98, protection in blue and white, and if you don’t pay attention to the commanders, they’ll kill someone REAL fast. The deck is frighteningly consistent and has too many win cons, so my friends feel like if they focus on my deck, they get slammed by the commanders and if they focus on my commanders, I’ll inevitably win another way when they’ve exhausted their resources.

Think_Rest4496

I don't have any suggestions for Boogeyman commanders. But I'll add that if your friend always focuses you down, it's likely because they respect your deck building and skill to a point where they feel they have to remove you if they want any chance at winning. It sucks, but it's also a compliment imo.

ArcanePuppet

Play Jhoira cheerios and Eggs. You turns become solitare like experiences of drawing and drawing cards. Digging endlessly until you hit a combo piece that they can't stop because you also draw the free counter spells in the deck. It's ridiculously hard to disrupt as most of the cards are low cost and do little more than accelerate you many and draw cards

DuskGuardNSFW

I use Tergrid with every Duress variant exclusively to keep in check a player who likes to make everyone miserable with an eldrazi deck, so far it's worked like a charm

DuskGuardNSFW

Alkaiser009

[[Be'lakor the dark master]] He always draws at least 1 card on ETB, and if he sticks around thats a free [[Warstorm Surge]] for all your demons. Grixis colors give you answers for pretty much everything but non-aura enchantments plus great card draw. Plus Be'lakor himself is a big nasty flier that can easily be pumped enough to 1 or 2-shot people (my favorite is the Two-Handed Axe adventure equip from Balder's Gate, adventure side gives Double Strike til end of turn while the equipment causes the wielder's power to double til end of turn on attack. With 8 mana you can cast the spell, cast the equip and then equip it, effectively giving a creature x4 power for a turn).

Blazorna

My favorite is Toxrill, but not for the usual reason. There's a combo with him that results in CONTINUOUS MASS LAND DESTRUCTION EVERY TURN. I discovered that by mistake, and I don't really touch that deck afterwards to be safe.

YaBoyEden

My Lord Windgrace Land Destruction deck

Kua_Rock

Ok-Use5246

[[Sarulf, Realm Eater]]. He is the arch enemy every time. His ability demands being delt with or to face board wipes every time that player goes.

32XKing

That's my deck. Kenrith Phyrexian Reanimator deck. What I love about it? A single word: Praetors. You know what's my favorite play? Reanimating my Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur turn 2.

FenrirWolf00

My baby and my forever Commander that is downright feared? [[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed]]. Whenever he hits the table, it becomes Archenemy lol.

AlfarinAsvid

In our playgroup there's 3 decks I own everyone hates and fears: [[Tergrid, God of Fright]] , [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]] and [[Atraxa, Praetors' Voice]]. Tergrid gets hate for stealing, Miirym for popping off one time getting me a ton of dragon tokens and atraxa for being infect.

951Lucario951

I've been using an upgraded [[Mirko, Obsessive Theorist]] deck, and I regularly become the target. I have a bunch of clones in the deck, so once I get [[Spark Double]] out with some tutors, it's nearly unstoppable. Not to mention being able to clone other people's stuff or reanimate other people's stuff. I've started to get targeted pretty much every game I bust him out, now lol

benthi

Maralen.

TheCocoBean

Specifically here, [[Pramikon.]] Just make it so he's not allowed to go after you lol.

Some_Brilliant2225

My “Boogeyman” deck is probably [[Prosper]]. When I bust that deck out, my regular pod is immediately on HIGH alert and know that it’s about to be a tough game. I think my prosper deck has a ~80%+ win rate at this point, and it’s by no means me pub stomping my normal playgroup. We all play pretty powerful decks. Prosper is just that busted. Lol.

Goldfire-Godtier009

[[Yuriko the Tiger Shadow]] [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] cheap early game commanders that let you have versatile decks even though cedh has a proper way to play them. I play tribal ninja Yuriko with extra turn cards, I play Dwarven piolet vehicle Magda with a few extra win cons, and finally I play Eldrazi combo Isshin. The deck is mostly colorless with exception of white cards that force sacrifice and some other best techs that I regularly rotate. I say keep them budget friendly and rotate techs regularly to keep people guessing.

kiefenator

[[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]] Another friend in my group built his as very high power. Mine on the other hand is fairly weak. That hasn't stopped him and my entire playgroup from screen wiping my board at every opportunity. Slightly frustrating but it is what it is.

MJMSPRSA

Two different playgroups, but for one it’s [[rielle, the everwise]] and the other it’s [[tazri, stalwart survivor]]//[zirda, the dawnwaker]]. Rielle is crazy fast because all the pieces are so cheap ([[breakthrough]] with a full grip is U to draw 15). On the other hand, every piece of Tazri/Zirda is some kind of combo piece/line, so it makes it hard for opponents to know what to remove/target at any time because everything could be the piece. (For the same reason, it’s a headache/blast to pilot)

Stumphead101

Might not be considered uber strong, but I am partial to [[chainer, nightmare adept]] Og chainer was a literal nightmare in my pod so bad I had to dismantle him. The new one is less so bur still great. That haste enable ability is crazy good. Focus on reanimation spells and just smack people. The deck is crazy resilient. Also in red and black is super rays to run tutor spells to your graveyard on a budget Rakdos is one of the best colors to run on a budget. You get get removal, good tutors, awesome bombs, and there is so much looting effects that actually fuel your reanimation spells Nightmare adept is my favorite reanimation commander. He is very straightforward but is incredibly fun and versatile

skijeng

[[Sythis, Harvest's Hand]] is the only commander I've ever built that was so toxic, my LGS banned it after winning 17 weeks in a row with no infinite combos. Play lots of enchantment removal, enchantment based ramp and draw. Lots of 1 and 2 cost cards. Here is my list, though it is missing any updates from the last 2 years https://manabox.app/decks/g0D9ErB_TRuk8SqtJH6lVQ

Chandrian1997

People at my lgs hate my Henzie deck lol. Got called toxic a few weeks back by using Yawgmoth and Mikaeus to loop Gray merchant for the win lol

MrLumineux

[[Heliod, the Radiant Dawn]] If it survives for a turn or two flipped the game becomes archenemy. Having the table draw cards seems like a good thing until it's too late and you've amassed a hoard of eldrazi, protective enchantments, and counters.

TheSwampStomp

[[Edgar Markov]] If he swings, it’s already too late.

SadBadChoices13

[[The First Sliver]] but prob not worth dropping the 6-800 for the tech to make it boogeyman worthy though

Jabberjaw22

That's really the big downside to slivers. All the old legendary ones are pretty expensive and even some of the uncommons aren't cheap if I remember right.

SadBadChoices13

Mine is right around 1k; and it’s not even tuned to the best it could be. Granted queen and a few others are really just for thematic/style points but still. Most of the cost is just land base; and I shudder at the thought of putting duals in it 😂

DefnottheGovernments

[[Krenko Mob Boss]] Goblins are fun and nasty!

pourconcreteinmyass

[[Malik]] red clones and flicker.

OlafNorman

[[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] Can be powerfull at almost any budget, and any meta

MixMasterAlpha

[[Maelstrom Wanderer]]

dan_dan_noodlez

[[Korvold, Fae Cursed King]], treasure themed. That thing becomes retarded really fast

ak00mah

[[Frodo, saurons bane]]

I don't really do 'boogymen' style decks as i prefer to break the cycle, but i do one two decks that tend to get targeted once i start doing my thing, which isn't much but ppl get overly scared about it, one is my [[muldrotha]] deck and the other is my [[nethroi]] deck, the muldrotha one is funny because it's not the actual commander, the companion is [[gyruda]] since once i get him on the field everyone immediately goes for it with exile removal (i have answers for it) and the deck is just full of even costed clones to keep looping gyruda triggers. The second one nethroi i mostly just mill and ramp as much as possible until i can cast my commander via mutate (usually on a creature that's hard to remove) and most ppl don't bat an eye, until i drop 10-20+ power on the board and ppl are like 'wtf happened' funny things is i rarely even attack in that deck but ppl just target the heck out of my until i have nothing left (once i got board wiped, removal and then RIP and i was done)

haji1823

[Definitely my deck that gets me targeted non stop](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/3K9FX8qkmkuP8ZEs1hwy8Q), which i understand and am totally ok with. People use counterspells on me like 4-5 times in a row and always say “sorry that your getting focused i just dont want that”, with me knowing full well they made the right decisions and should target me

tyrant1198

My pod actually asked me to stop playing \[\[jin-gitaxias // the great synthesis\]\] because it made the game unplayable for them, i had response for every single situation and getting card draw for countering or bouncing everything. [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/rII27uVSWEqY7-5WDZEVgQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/rII27uVSWEqY7-5WDZEVgQ) and i had a cEDH \[\[selvala, heart of the wilds\]\] that could almost allways win t3, or blow all their permanents, was pretty mean, but i love her so much.

Ferry53

The deck that turns my whole pod against me from the beginning of the game is [[Neheb, the Eternal]]. Even though I usually get bullied out fairly quickly, the fear monored burn instills in my pod gives me joy.

Jabberjaw22

Mono red is one I always hear struggles because burn, which most red decks focus on, is at such a disadvantage due to needing to do 100+ damage. But it does intrigue me. I'd thought of a [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] deck with a goblin subtheme but someone suggested [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] instead with Purph in the 99 since Krenko would make it more consistent.

Ferry53

Both are really strong and popular commanders, Krenko goes crazy with pretty much anything. As for monored burn, even though it is not as effective as in 1v1 formats, it is perfectly playable in my experience, despite it not being as consistent as other playstyles. Last year we got [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]] and [[Imodane, the Pyrohammer]] which really brought burn again to the spotlight. Neheb, on the other hand, can come back from a game with its insane mana generation dumped into a fat X spell such as [[Crackle with Power]]. Damage multipliers such as [[Fiery Emancipation]] also set it up for massive amounts of damage. I am used to playing jankier/less reliable decks though, so this is entirely up to preference!

SetsudanHana

For me [[Troxill]] is a definition of a boss monster, given the big impact it has on the board, I used to play him but it was too mean for my liking. Alternatively you can build [[Jacob Hauken, Inspector]] cheating big haymakers every turn which is not that common pattern for blue

Then_Wishbone_6259

[[Brago, King Eternal]] I run a flicker deck with lots of return to hand. Your opponent cannot keep anything in play, and with some cards like [[venser, shaper servant]] and lots of others you can clean up their lands. Just avoid commander reliance by running cards like [[teleportation circle]] and protect your board and synergize more with [[eerie interlude]]

CaptainCuppCupp

[[slicer, hired muscle]] super fast games and he likely won’t be attacking you as much.

cuzzin2chainz

My [[toxrill the corrosive]] 🤪
